Possible Trade

With the recent half-hearted and all around poor play from both travis and rudy, rumors of a trade with the Knicks have begun to swirl.

Looking at the trade machine on ESPN.com, this trade not only makes perfect sense, but it works fiscally:

Portland gets: Marbury

New York gets: Rudy Fernandez, Travis Outlaw, and Raef

Portland solves its dilluted PG situation and gets a proven star that can rally a team and make a run at the post season; while also clearing up the log-jam at the 3.

The Knicks would be the team that may not pull the trigger on this deal, but if they were to do so, they would be getting good young talent to surround Lebron with.

What?

Are you serious? Your going to give up one of the Spanish Conquistadors for Marbury? Someone who was suspended the other day by the Knicks. The whole purpose of Pritchard’s operation has been to clean up the Blazers and put a clean and good basketball product on the court. No way! Find a different way to unload Raef. Outlaw needs more playing time and then I think he produces.

You could be

If it’s someone new you have no idea who it is. It could be a kid who really liked Marbury and got stuck in that. Blasting him would turn him off to the site. It could be someone who doesn’t know much about basketball and really isn’t that bright. Again, blasting him turns him off. It could be a troll. Blasting him serves the purpose of why he posted in the first place. Yeah, you could be accurate with your response but completely wrong with your inteded results.

I’m not as nice as I come off on this site, it’s just that I have a big problem with blatant disrespect, and I’ve seen a lot of it lately.

She's right about

there is a poster here that I have no respect for and let it be known. They are always taking a controversial stance, ideas clearly detrimental to the team and are a proclaimed L#kers fan. IMO you can’t have love in your heart for both the Blazers and that team. I have no respect for that, so I don’t hold back.

I agree that the post is a detriment to the site, but if the poster is a troll, giving them the crap that they are looking for only fuels the fire and they do what they are doing more. The overall level of diserespect on this site is poor (there are some areas I have a bigger problem with than others, but it’s all related). However the defense of the disrespect is unbeleivable.

by Aaron79 on Nov 30, 2008 7:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

Maybe just flag them. No controversy, no feeding. That’s Dave’s reccommendation, he likened it to de-toothing a dog when I emailed him about trolls. He said something along the lines of ‘they can gum you all they want, but it just looks ridiculous’. I keep thinking about that. I wish I could ignore them more myself, but using rational arguments void of emotion are the best way to go seems to be the point. There may be too many posters here now, but if the main ones can just ignore it then it won’t garner near as much attention as they are now (how did this post get rec’ed?)

by einman77 on Nov 30, 2008 7:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dave does run the board. If that’s what he thinks then it’s best to go along with what he says. Putting himself in his place I could certainly see why he would say that.

Stupidity doesn't need reason.

That guys like Marbury get paid so well may speak as much about how poor some executives are at accessing value, then it does about Marbury’s value. In fact it’s one of the reasons we love Pritchard so much. He’s proven to be at the top of his class when it comes to knowing how to do his job.

Mostly because I am completely sick of hearing about Conley. A backup point guard who plays on a team that LOST to the Thunder equals pass.

Warning to Bleighzers/Holla at a Playa

Responding to your own posts/comments as if you were someone else is a bannable offense at Blazersedge. Please settle down and pick one screen name and use it with integrity.

For those who flagged the post: it is an incredibly silly idea with obviously flawed (and likely intentionally provoking) reasoning but we can’t be deleting for silly and flawed or we’d vacuum up a lot of comments, especially after we lose a game. Should the activity progress into more intentional trolling we’ll take a further look. But I’d suggest the best way to avoid that would be to stop responding if you think the initial argument is too outrageous to speak of credibly.

Dave, I bow to your eternal wisdom

but it really seems like you have been letting SO much garbage get through lately (not saying that any of my comments or posts couldn’t be classified as such haha). I don’t want you to be a dictator, but as the Blazersedge head of state, couldn’t you at least make some judgement calls and delete stuff just because its crap? I trust your judgement! I mean, we could try to resist and not respond to something like this but…this post has 4 rec’s right now. 4, Dave. There are 39 trade proposals a day. people are quadriple posting the same subjects over and over again. I used to look for threads with a lot of comments in them because I could assume that the content generated a lot of thoughtful discussion. now I assume 3 people are just arguing or cracking jokes. and this is WITH the junk drawer in action. I hate to sound like a crabby old timer but can’t you hire some new nerds to help moderate this with the judgement of solomon and clean this place up so this site can resemble what is used to be even just 9 months ago?

We're working on more eyes

but until then use the flag system to help draw my eyes where they need to be. I nuked an entire section of one thread today off of just one flag because it was, indeed, crap and had hijacked somebody’s fanpost. However even with more eyes we can’t delete bad trade proposals because I’d be deleting 95% of them. I know some would recommend exactly that, but that’s not the way conversation works (unfortunately). Besides most of those trade proposals, even if the trades themselves are unrealistic, are meant well. Fortunately trade threads are easily avoidable, as they are almost always marked as such.

That said, I have started tightening the reins on generally craptastic posters who are being annoying and not adding much to the conversation. Have patience in situations like that and they’ll soon be gone.

More eyes as in moderators?

That’d be an excellent idea…it seems necessary to do that since the site has gotten so large. You may have saved time not manually inputting the Jersey scores, but then that free time probably went to policing the site. It’d be nice to have others take care of that for you.

Dave, I have an idea that may be helpful

In addition to essential rules of conduct here on BE, there are also conventions which, though not always followed, may be appealed to in the interest of organizing site content and decreasing the friction among posters. For example, there seemed to be too much OT content on the site, and threads were very often hijacked (like this one ;), putting some posters into ugly snits. Then the Junk Drawer™ was established, and things improved a bit. And now, if somebody really goes overboard with chatty OT stuff, you could suggest that they move to the Junk Drawer, moderators could actually move the conversation there, or if all else failed, you could just fall back on traditional discipline.

So, how about we create a Trading Post™ where any and all trades involving Blazer assets can be discussed? The fact is that the Blazers have evolved to the point where they really don’t need any trades to breathe life back into the club or to prevent them from spiraling downward into mediocrity. Yes, there will probably be one or more trades in the next year, and one or more of some peoples’ favorite players may be gone within the year, and it is very reasonable to discuss the possibilities on BE. But, it has been pointed out that these trade scenarios are chasing out fanposts on just about every other subject. In fact, I don’t know who the heck is rec’ing this particular fanpost, but if you took a poll of all the BEdgers who’ve been here since last season, I doubt you’d find more than a handful who thought it had any merit whatsoever. We need a way to cut down the bandwidth of these trade posts while still allowing them to be expressed. Anyhow, there’s my idea. Maybe something along these lines could be done, n’est-ce pas?

Rudy?

It amazes me all the trade scenarios involving rudy. So far, not even 1/4 through his first seasonRudy may be in my top 10 all time favorite blazers ever. Lets think, #1 Drexler, Obviously. #2, Roy…no doubt. #3 Buck Williams, #4 Terry Porter, #5 Danny ainge(oregon boy)#6 Arvydas Sabonis(he is not your Vyads, he is not my Vydas, he is Arvydas) God i would have loved to have seen him with the 90s blazers.#7 Brian Grant in the Late 90s and early part of this decade, He could D-up any 4 in the league. #8 Robert Pack, (who?) i doubt anyone will remember this guy, but i loved that player. Had such huge momentum shifting dunks for us.#9 LMA, honestly he kicks @ss in his early career . So that leaves Rudy #10 in my book, Take issue with my list if you willl but thats my top 10. Thanks all.

the minus one explanation

its the whole trade trade trade thing again… it always seems to be a we need this guy, or we need to fill this position, and your idea about a dominant wing player via trade hits me squarely right -→ there.

The team is loaded, with good players and good back-ups at every position. I diagree a “dominant” wing or “dominant” any position is needed. What the PTB need is time, which is running out for other teams, not ours.

Is that ok?

It's too late to agree with me, I've already changed my mind.

by bow4meow on Nov 30, 2008 6:47 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't think we need to trade for anything either, so in this I agree.

But, I think that Rudy is too good to be a bench player for any big portion of his career. He is a world class 2. He would start for, I’m guessing here, 60% of all NBA teams.

“Dominant wing,” would just be my guess of the things we may go after. I don’t really know, nor do I think that would make our team.

I heart taxes.

by everett on Nov 30, 2008 7:02 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

A 2 is a wing

and if he’s world class, he’s going to be dominant.

I still think we’re going to see more three guard sets in future. I think once Rudy really gets his feel of this NBA thing, Roy will shift to the 3 a lot more.

I’m not saying Rudy won’t be traded. But I don’t think the kind of guy you would have to get for him is likely to be available. So I think Nate is going to have to be creative. He’ll spend all of next summer talking to every old coach he can find for ideas about how to play Roy and Rudy together.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

possibilities IMO

Best : Luol Deng (packaged with Hinrich) we give Rlec, Trout, Rudy, and Sergio/Blake.

Szczerbiak (they would like a two of Rudy’s caliber.)

Teyshaun (as has been said, they aren’t gonna let him go. but he is good enough. I would do it if it was on the table).

Josh Smith (could swing to PF, when LMA is on the bench. Also, there is no way they do this, because they don’t need Rudy… but maybe.)

I heart taxes.

by everett on Dec 2, 2008 10:23 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Deng has been bad

His injuries seem to have rendered him verrrrry mediocre. I thought he was gonna be a top SF in the league, but it simply hasn’t materialized. He’s too slow to defend opposing SFs well, doesn’t quite have 3 point range (still) and is just a jump shooter now. He bums me out.

Szczerbiak… huh? You’d WANT to trade for Wally World? Why on Earth would anyone want to do that? Even the Cavs didn’t want to do that but had to match salaries in the Hughes deal. He’s an awful player, currently worse than Rudy by a lot on both sides of the ball. And expensive. Do you want him for an expiring deal (I dunno if he has an expiring deal but I can’t imagine why someone would want Wally World)?

Unless Teyshaun and their coach continue to have some problems (and I doubt they have been extreme, but curious all the same) and if Dumars sides with his new coach that he professes love for, maybe Prince COULD be available. I dunno if we’d wanna lose Rudy in any package deal if possible, of course… since Rudy is only 23 and doing better than nearly any young Euro who came over to the NBA his rookie year.

Prince would cost to get, but he’d be awesome for us. I’d trade anyone outside of Roy/LMA/Oden/Rudy and probably Pryzzle for Prince.

Josh Smith is an awesome player but wants to be THE MAN and has repeatedly had attitude and ego problems with his coach. Ideally he could be an amazing SF for us, but I dunno if he is a good personality fit (ignoring whether the Hawks would deal him for a package involving Rudy, which we both doubt). He’s kinda a selfish player… but very talented and still very young.

If Rudy keeps getting better (as we both think he will), he will play. There’s 30 mins a night available for him there, and he’s only not getting minutes when he hasn’t been effective. Over time I think he and Roy will play together even more, since Rudy is so amazing off the ball and a terrific passer to help Roy set up the offense.

Rudy just needs to get more comfortable at creating his own shot for himself and others, since he is very weak off the dribble right now. That right there keeps him out of Good Starter status for most teams, since if there are no other good players on the floor he’ll be very easy to take out of the game.

By having weapons like Roy and LMA on the floor, or a playmaker like Sergio, it makes Rudy look a lot better because the defense is forced to not focus on him. Once they focus on him, he’s just not capable (yet) of creating his own magic like Roy can.

I still envision lots of co-PG play between Roy and Rudy, each splitting time dribbling the ball up court and setting the offense, and who they defend depends on matchups (and Roy moving to SF defensively, depending on matchups).

I’d only move Rudy for an ELITE, surefire n’ awesome defending SF. Prince, as a star role player, is the only guy who is close to that you listed and even then you gotta pause…

All I’m sayin’ is, there’s plenty of minutes available for Rudy and we can keep him forever and a day if we wanna.

I generally agree with you,

except for two things…
I really like szczerbiak, I think he is a talent bomb… maybe not a big advantage though.

also, I think Rudy is going to be in control of his own destiny. He may be happy off the bench, and he may not. I think if your prediction of the two of them playing side by side more comes true Rudy may stay here forever ala Manu Ginobli, but… we’ll see.

I heart taxes.

What is wrong with using the convention of +1 and -1?

Both simply and quickly express whether you agree or disagree with the post’s comment.

btw – I too thought about giving it a -1. The reason, your use of the term dominant wing player. Just what is a dominant wing player and better yet, how would one make this a better team?

I would assume you are referring to a SG or SF. Using the adjective “dominant”, what springs to mind are guys like Jordan, Byrant, James, Wade, Pierce. Or maybe you dial it back a bit to describe a guy that can take over a game when the “star” player is having an off night, say Scottie Pippen, Manu Ginobilli, Josh Howard,Tayshaun Prince or Caron Butler, etc. That begs the question – Why do you think a “dominant player” would be availble by trade and just how would you go about getting him? If Rudy is good enough to land such a guy, shouldn’t we just keep him?

Then there is the question of how do you fit such a player into this line up. Dominant players, by definition, tend to dominate their team’s play. Portland already looks like it may have dominant type players at three positions. What are the chances of finding that guy who has both the talent & desire to dominate, yet also has the sort of temperment that he can readily (and frequently) defer to his teammates? Do you really see Michael Jordan or Kobe Byrant tailoring their game to fit in with what McMillan is crafting here? (Kobe maybe. At least for awhile. He’s that smart.)

Finally, why look for a dominant wing when we already have one? Brandon Roy is a dominant player in a way that counts for more than just a statistical line. He imparts his will on both his teammates and his opponents. It may be homerism, but I don’t think I’d trade Brandon for any other player in the league. LeBron, Kobe, Wade may be better basketball players, but Brandon is perhaps the perfect guy FOR THIS TEAM. In a very short time he’s proven that he is a true leader. That counts for as much as his play during games.

If that is not enough reason – we have one guy currently sitting behind the bench in civvies and another guy who has earned a starting position as a 19 yr old rookie who are not only wing players, but who have high potential to be “dominant” in their own right. In other words, where is the need for this dominant wing plaer?

hakkaa päälle !

I should have been more specific... Small Forward,

I think that Portland is weak at the small forward… hopefully Martell can pull it together this year. Batum is still on the cusp, he looks like he is going to be good, but we don’t really know yet. Two years ago I fully expected that Martell would have arrived by now, and he really hasn’t. So we could potentially have two Martell’s; two guys who are really good, but not quite great.

There is still a problem with too much dominance that you bring up, but I’m not sure that is an actual problem. It seems like there are a lot of facets to the conversation, but I would present this question. If your dominant player(s) prevent you from having other dominant players on the floor, but you are still not good enough, are your dominant players good enough?

In regards to +/-, I think I explained my stance pretty clearly above, but in this instance I was really just inviting conversation. -1 just seems like a slam with no justification.

I heart taxes.

The problem

with rec’s = 25 to 50% lack merit….an interesting read to someone could be trash to someone else…..You just have to take a rec’d post or comment with a skeptical eye on it’s merit. (Because most people rec something they agree with, so how much value does that have to someone who disagrees?)…..

For instance, the junk drawer rec’s are usually the same group …..Do they rec it to keep it at the forefront or is it done to just keep the gossip flowing ?
At any rate, you can tell, early on, what value the rec’s have and any agenda, that will have an interest to you….How many comments get rec’s simply on the great content it contains?…..Some do, but they generally get crowded in with the fanatical(ones) and personal agendas…So the fate of rec’s,falls into the hands of BE readers …You become your own rec filter………
It’s a good tool, even if it often gets diluted with ego’s and soap box grandstanding

For whatever it's worth to y'all, I've yet to ...

off myself after waking up hungover, taking a couple of Advil®, drinking a boatload of lemon-lime flavored Gatorade®, and reading this thread and the most recent Chris Bosh trade proposal. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to having considered it, though.

colorful language indeed

> anyone who takes sports seriously MUST be disgusted by the sight of a millionaire athlete refusing to play the game he is paid to play.

Many millions of dollars this season.

> English is a colorful language but there are no words colorful enough to express my disgust for marbury.

Bravo, this sentence is what got me to give you the rec.

Just curious...

Has anyone ever heard of the saying, “Do not feed the trolls”? Seems like a lot of people are getting upset over this post. Just ignore it. Life’s too short.

Besides, I like the way that Dave and Ben run things in here. Yeah we get some goofy offbeat stuff, but I’d rather invest some of my precious free time in a place like this that enforces civility, over some place that shuts down presumed stupidity.

yeah but it's not feeding them to point out how fundamentally asinine their ideas are

It’s only feeding them if you play their narcissistic little game and take them seriously.

But they can’t eat reflections of their own ignorance and peevishness.

Trolls want attention

Anyway, any shape, any form. And the form truly doesn’t matter because regardless of the point of one’s response, the troll will always take any response as a moral victory.

and you

would have to say he received everything he wanted out of this and then some…..he threw out some rotten bait, but he got a lot of seagulls, fighting over the big pieces……Doesn’t looK like us seagulls are as smart as we think(fighting over rotten food)…He’s the one getting most of the laughs…..3 days worth, so far…….And……Well….. he’s probably already flown off a long time ago and it’s now just the seagulls fighting amongst themselves….small scraps at best…..

Hello,
I think it is a joke…. Marbury? This player who does not want to play these last Knicks´s games, come on! It would be a stupid trade

By the way, I found a good analyze about the free agents 2009

wow, completely agree Dave,

Dave this post is obnoxious. There is very very little support for the idea of a trade for Marbury, I think a lot of people have presumed ideas of what kind of player marbury is, that being said, it is not a good presumption in most corners. At the very least the poster should have tried to clear that up. The only good which has come out of this post, is the idea of creating a “Trading Post” section. (Catman2, maybe others, but they came to my attention.) That would make the trade sludge easier to work through. There is a decent amount of worthless posts, which in my book is fine, it is these types of posts that are just aggravating, and ultimately should not be receiving tens of responses. let alone the almost 200 this one has.

-Create “Trading Post” section, or maybe an area on the site that specifies where trades should be posted at least.
-Trade posts should have a higher minimum amount of words before posting. This will help weed out the BS coming from some people.

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life,(of the Blazers), (of KP's madness), of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity." - Albert Einstein
