Road Trip predictions
The Blazers are heading out on the road for the next 5 games to play the Pistons, Knicks, Wizards, Celtics and Raptors.
Obviously we're looking at a couple tough ones in Detroit and Boston, and potential plums in NY and DC. The Toronto game intrigues me since I haven't seen enough of the Raptors to have much of an idea what to expect.
What are your expectations for this road swing? What will you be looking for from the Blazers to be able to come back home following a successful trip?

If Portland can win in Detroit tomorrow,
I think it’s possible to go either 4-1 or 5-0. Tomorrow’s game is big.
An upset in Boston will put Portland back into the conversation about Western Conference Elites, if they also win in Detroit.
This is a big trip for Oden too, as a lot of press will follow him on the East Coast.
Roy, hopefully, will make some big plays to carry this team…
This trip is a big one!

This trip is indeed a big one!
But I’m not going to let it get me down if we have a setback.
This is going to be a tough trip. Remember last year when we went to Toronto, and played at 9am Portland time? And still took them to double overtime?
I suspect stuff like that may happen here. We may come up short. And if so, it’s ok.
But I’m really happy with how well the players have grown since last season. I think they’ll be prepared for every game. Except maybe Boston. They still seem to be in Portland’s head. If they beat Boston, that’s a big mental milestone.

3-2 would keep us in the conversation about Western elites
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

Detroit
has been having problems on sunday games.
They even lost to Minny at home in blowout fashion.
I hope the trend continues.

The Detriot Game is a key game
It is the next game of “one game at a time.”
It is the first game of the road trip.
It is televised for all KGW viewers.
Get this one and the rest will be gravy (Turkey Gravy).

Boston will send us a message
As good to great teams do. Whenever an up and coming team starts to feel frisky, defending champs (if they are worthy) like to send messages. I hope we respond and keep the game tight, but I don’t hold out hopes for this one. If we can split Detroit (who also likes to send messages) and Toronto, 3-2 is a possibility as long as we take care of business in NY and Washington. Which as we saw from the last Sacramento game isn’t a given.

This mirrors my thoughts pretty closely
I optimistically voted 3-2 in my own poll.

I'm feeling saucy about calling a winning record for this road trip
after correctly predicting that the Blazers would sweep this 3 game home stand.

This is the toughest set to predict yet.
Those Eastern teams have all been bipolar so far this year, with great games and horrible games.
I really don’t know what to expect.
I went with 3-2 to be optimistic… I really don’t see us winning them all (we’ll lose in Boston… Joel brings out the dickens in the leagues big men; Garnett will elevate his game consequentially), and really can’t see us losing them all either.
Tough trip no matter how you dice it.

Here's a little food for thought on the Raptors matchup
http://coachingbetterbball.blogspot.com/2008/11/raptors-cannot-stop-ball-and-lose-badly.html
This a weakness in the Raptor’s defense that both Roy and Sergio should be able to exploit.

I say 3 and 2 but would not be sad w/ 2 and 3
We are playing well and need to take some of this momentum on the road w/ us. I think we can win at the Palace on Sunday. It will take a collective effort from everyone , not just BROY and Sheed could help us by getting a couple T’s . Im jus sayin’. . . anyway, I think we can go 4 and 1 also but it will be tough. At least there aren’t any back to backs!!
I want to win in Boston SOOO bad…

No doubt Sophia
going 1-4 with a win in Beantown makes it a successful trip. However, I voted 3-2 cause I think we only take either Detroit or Toronto and probably lose to the C’s.

Personally I hope that they talk a ton of trash to the Celtics this trip!
Boston would be a sweet win but I think that 3-2 or 2-3 is more like it given the schedule and playing Toronto last. Hope that we can maintain our amazing energy!!! Go Blazers!!

I agree! Hearing the Blazers trash talk the Celts to death would be very gratifying

Amazingly enough...
Going by the power rankings, the Blazers are favored against Detroit, Washington, New York, and Toronto, even accounting for home field advantage. I still picked 3-2, but 4-1 could definitely happen.

anything better than 2-3 would be great.
but 2-3 should be what the average low expectation should be

Shamelessly homeristicly
picking 5-0.
Detroit is lazy.
no comment needed on NY and DC
This team remembers all of bostons smack talk from last years game and should be eager for some payback.
Toronto? might actually be the most interesting challenge, but our team’s sheer awesomeness should make up for any surprises they have.

I feel a little pessimistic
For these reasons:
- The Blazers must be around #1 in the league in split personality, home and away. I think we can expect close games, potentially close losses.
- We’ve had a little bit of luck with wins against teams whose key players were injured. If I remember correctly, that includes: Kevin Martin (x2), Shawn Marion (x2), Ginobili + Parker, and Tracy McGrady. (On the Blazers’ side, obviously we lost Oden, so maybe that balances out.
I just have a hunch that a little reality could set in on this trip. I said 2-3, and I wouldn’t be miserable if that happened. Obviously, beating at least one of Detroit, Boston and Toronto would be a big plus.
That said, the difference between “good” and “elite” is beating good teams on the road — if we start to see that, then these Blazers are rubbing elbows with the best.

I agree
That the Blazers have been lucky to catch a few teams without one of their key players (I recall McGrady playing, but Deng did not). I also agree that the difference between the Blazers at home and on the road is as big as any team in the league. On the other hand, Toronto has not played any better than Miami (even without Marion) or Orlando, whom the Blazers beat on the road.
by PoliSam on Nov 29, 2008 3:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Toronto
I live in Nets country and saw the Nets come back from a HUGE deficit in Toronto and beat them in overtime, so you’re definitely right that Toronto is vulnerable. But they also should have won easily, and could definitely beat the Blazers. (They did last year, in a close game.) I’d say that’s a competitive game, one way or the other.
You’re right about Deng too.
by Kaboomm on Nov 29, 2008 3:15 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
McGrady played, Battier didn't
On the other hand, every team has been lucky to get us without Martell, and some were lucky enough to get us without Greg, too.

5 games
2 games we should win but could easily lose.
2 games we shouldn’t expect to win but that are quite winnable.
1 game we will be expected to definitely lose.
0-5 would be very bad.
1-4 wouldn’t be good, but wouldn’t be a disaster, either. We would come home still 2 games over .500, having played 8 more road games than home games, including against mostly very strong teams. We will have to play well to do better than this.
2-3 would actually be very good. We would remain at .400 on the road against a very tough slate of teams. I’ll be very happy if we do this.
3-2 would be a superb accomplishment, and put everyone on notice that we have to be considered a major threat this year. That’s what I predicted in the poll, but I’m a homer. Somehow, I just think we’ll hold serve against the weaker teams and steal one from Toronto/Detroit. I’ll be over the moon if we get this, but I think we will.
4-1 would be scary good.

3-2. Wizards and Knicks today looked improved, so even that's not an automatic given
NY was impressive against Golden State who we all remember beat us, with all their starters in double figures, only playing 7 guys, and Duhon with over 20 assists (career high).

"That depends on the manner of your return"
That’s a line from “Return of the King” (the book, not the movie) from Denethor to his son Faramir, when he sent his son to impending doom against the Witch King of Angmar. His son had just requested that his father think better of him if he see’s him again.
If the Blazers play their hearts out, suffer from home-cooked fouls, get battered and thrashed and lose by a handful in all 5, I’ll still be as proud of them as ever. Our schedule has been ruthless and we’ll still be 500 if we lose every game on this trip (and we won’t).
