Blazers discussing trade for Grizzlies' Conley
It looks like Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports is breathing life back into the Outlaw-for-Conley rumor.
According to A-Woj "It is unlikely that this trade will happen if it’s a straight-up exchange of Outlaw and Conley."
Well, that's good since I can't see giving up a quality forward who logs lots of minutes at the 4 to add a FOURTH point guard to the team. Aside from the reported chemistry and friendship between Conley and Oden, I don't see any reason to do this deal. Conley would basically be the THIRD best PG on our team, as I haven't seen anything out of him to suggest he's closer than Sergio to be a quality NBA starting point.

I agree
I was against getting Conley last year, and this year he’s playing worse. Can we please dispel the rumor that we have long been coveting Conley?

Conley isn't that good.
i dont think picking him up just to “get in Gregs face” every once in awhile is worth it at all.

travis + sergio for conley + warrick… would not be surprised at all to see this happen.
sergio gets to start, greg gets conley, warrick’s contract is expiring so pdx gets additional flexibility, the logjam gets cleared up a little bit, memphis could use trout … could definitely happen.

okay, but....
Why are we going for additional flexibility right now? This seems (to me at least) to be the point in the game where we try and get the best players for our team…

this trade would be all about getting mike for greg. this wouldn’t be the only move we make. we’d aim for flexibility so we could find that “best” player you’re talking about in a move down the road…
if you’re trading multiple players and your stated goal is cap flexibility, either for a major trade later this season, to spend this offseason or to spend later in the future, you try to avoid any player with multiple year deals as part of a throw in.
if our target is conley but it’s going to be a multiple player deal because they need a point guard coming back (sergio), and we need to find another player to make salaries match or to make the deal fair, we are looking for someone with a small deal with the smallest # of years remaining as well. warrick fits that role perfectly.
would this trade help or hurt future trades or free agent signings? i think it would help because you lose the last year of outlaw’s contract off the books because warrick expires this year.
i’m not saying one way or the other if i would do this, but it would fit the bill of the type of moves that KP and TP aim for.

Yea definitely
I’ve been kind of concerned recently that KP is spending his time getting assets instead of players. Mostly the 15-30 second round draft picks that we have acquired comes to mind. At a certain point cap flexibility and draft picks are only as good as the players you use them on. (KP has used them awesomely, but I kind of was hoping the focus would shift to the players more than the flexibility pretty soon here).
But yea this would be an interesting move.

kp will do that here shortly. this would be about making greg happy. frankly, i would consider that a very high priority for this organization. if you can do it in such a way that you improve your cap situation and not sacrifice critical assets, you’ve got to consider doing it.
he’s still got RLEC, CFEC and IDEC as trade bait. that’s no small collection. if they all go at the end of the year we have crazy room to get someone big.
having the patience to wait this out is killing me too though.

And what
Does rudy say about sending off Sergio? No no Ben.
Trade Blake & Travis for Conley Warrick. Then during the offseason, we have a giant competition between Face, Sergio & Conley.
What connection is best?
Sergio, Rudy?
Conley, Oden?
Bayless & His face?

Conely has been playing poorly.
38% fg, 20% 3pp
I guess that might change. Buy low, sell high?
If you trade Outlaw then you can keep Frye. If you trade Frye, then Outlaw slides over to the 4 spot in the second unit. That leaves a second unit of Sergio, Rudy, Batum, Outlaw and Pryzbilla. That looks mighty skinny to me.
I think the bottom line is that Outlaw still makes the most sense to move, especially with Batum outplaying him most nights.
The Blazers have watched Conely close enough to determine his worth. He’s obviously been on their radar since they started watching Greg, so I’m sure they know his limitations, upside and all that. If they do it then I’m happy. If they don’t do it, then I’m happy.
I want to put points on your face.-Rudy Fernandez

What about Sergio and fernandez chemistry?
I think this chemistry is more important to team right now than Conley-Oden can ever be.
And idk how good Oden and conley were together. can anyone tell me if they were really good together?
"All our holes," says shooting guard Brandon Roy, a surprise All-Star last year in his second season, "are holes that Greg is going to plug."

I agree
I’d rather not make Rudy unhappy right now.
I think we can do better than Mike Conley. Perhaps all this was just a strategic leak to the press by an unnamed source in the Blazer organization to see if we could get other offers.

Backing up your argument
Rudy usually plays like straight Doo doo(thanks dave chappelle) when Sergio plays poorly. What is to happen if he leaves? Scary thoughts, tisall.

Quote from Greg
I always tell people that 60 or 70 percent of my game comes from Mike, because he’s a great passer and he’s the kind of player who makes everyone on the court better. Everything comes through him. So if you’re going to say I’m a great player, you have to say Mike is a great player because he’s doing most of the work.

Right now Conley is not looking worth trading for.
Granted he’s playing next to Mayo now, but here it would be next to Roy or Rudy. Conley is not very good in the catch and shoot role, and I think that’s the same reason Blake is starting over Sergio right now. As much as I’d like to see Greg reunite with an old friend both Blake and Sergio are better than Conley and I wouldn’t want to give up Sergio for him, let alone Outlaw. Outlaw hasn’t been his offensive self lately but he’s been playing much improved defense and rebounding.
We don’t need any more potential or projects, if we’re gonna make a trade it needs to be for a proven player.

Good for everyone
The change of scenery will be good for them. Travis would be back home happily trying to be most entertaining 6th man in the west. Sergio would be a good buddy for Gasol and logging serious minutes out of Nate’s hair. Mike and Greg would be reunited like in the song. Nic and Rudy would get more minutes which will give the west a migraine. Martell will be the undisputed man which is really the case already. Good trade all around..

Just saw on Rip City Live (csn)
The trade rumor is bogus from the sounds of it. J.Quick said that KP already pulled Travis aside and assured him he’s not going anywhere.

I heard this about the trade
The Blazers and Grizzlies are discussing a trade that would send Mike Conley, Hakim Warrick and Javaris Crittenton to the Blazers for Travis Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez, according to Yahoo! Sports.
The teams could trade Conley for Outlaw straight up, but the other players are thought to be included in the possible deal. Conley and Rodriguez would both likely see a boost in value if they are traded, but Outlaw would probably stay in a reserve role behind Rudy Gay in Memphis (although there’s a chance he could also start at PF). No deal is imminent, but talks are said to be “serious.”
