Rudy, Sergio, Batum, Raef for Deng, Hinrich... a fine holiday selection of dumb message board trade ideas

Some of which wouldn't work to begin with - like the one in the title even if we wanted that so much. No? As per tominhawaii's request...

I was going to watch the Seahawks game, and after the first drive, I think I’m just going to go to bed. Will someone write a fanpost that will tick off a bunch of people, so that I’ll have something to read when I get to work tonight? Trade Roy for Baron Davis or something like that. It might help if you make up a name like bdizzleistheshizle or something like that.

...here is a variation: A collection of slightly controversial trade ideas involving the Blazers - as collected from various message boards (well, mainly from ESPN since those guys often provide trade machine links and I don't have to recreate them). Originally I wanted to save that as a feature for before the trade deadline. But why not laugh already and let these genius ideas that all involved teams should be stoked to make go to waste unnoticed by Blazer's Edge?

If you had one of these ideas - I am sorry for mocking it. Some might become true. Until then I pity you, fool™!

How would Bill Simmons say? These are all real ideas from real readers/posters in no particular order.

To finish, I really liked this reply on the general forum in a typical "Oden is a bust" post:

Oden looks the next coming of Kwame Brown.

actually, here in Portland, he's known as the next coming of Sam Bowie.

Compare Kwame to Bowie.

Kwame could be the worst player ever, Bowie nearly averaged a double double.

Kwame Brown > LaRue Martin

Regarding #1 draft picks in NBA history, Kwame Brown ...

wasn’t as big of a bust as LaRue Martin or Michael Olowokandi.

Brown, by the way, finishes ahead of Olowokandi due to defense, efficiency, and longevity.

by AK1984 on Nov 28, 2008 7:04 AM PST up reply actions

I don't doubt that LaRue Martin gave a 100% effort, but in hindsight ...

it’s shocking that the Portland Trail Blazers didn’t select Bob McAdoo in the 1972 NBA Draft.

Yet, on the other hand, the Blazers needed a low-post threat to pair with athletic power forward Sidney Wicks on the frontline; thus, Martin was a sensible draft pick in that regard. Besides, the lengthened futility caused partly by Martin brought about the selection of Bill Walton with the first pick in the 1974 NBA Draft; consequently, that surely helped the Blazers win the 1977 NBA Finals.

I watched JJ Hickson at NCSTATE

Live. He could replace LA, sorry to say it. Especially with LeBron coming over. Not to mention what Ben Wallace would do for the overall defense of our posts, imagine Greg learning from him in practice every day. Still one of the best shot blockers in the nba.

I like durant....and Have thrown together many trades that can net us him. without losing roy, oden, lamarcus, sergio or rudy, AND cut 4 players from our bench....

I can’t remember how I did it, but it was a stroke of brilliance, as it also had us getting lebron, AND duncan….

I'll wait.

Nice to see people working overtime to “improve” whoever – wherever, for (you guessed it) whatever. Somehow I think KP is sitting in the catbird’s seat right now, knows it, and will wait – and watch. His assets (meaning players) are adding value almost daily. Batum, Fernandez and Sergio (for example) have stepped up. I’d be willing to bet you couldn’t even dream these days of getting Batum and Fernandez at the low end of the first round. The GM’s daily watch this game. Why trade for an SF if we Batum keeps improving? He is, in terms of size, the prototypical SF after all, and almost certain to be the 2nd SF to pair with Webster. He was guarding Wade the other day – and did a good job. Fernandez, in turn, is showing that he’d be a credible starter on many teams. At some point, you get down to one for one trades. An older “proven” pro, for a younger pro with a similar or better upside. When your assets are daily appreciating in value – this is decidedly “not” the time to trade them.

Me, I’ll wait. As Batum improves and Webster comes back, the only hole the Blazers are likely to have that we might improve will be PG.

However, given how Roy likes the rock at crunch time and the 4th quarter, the Blazers have to be very selective at that spot.

Hinrich is interesting, simply because he’s playing out of position, and his stats are declining. The Bulls can claim he’s the player he was the year before last all they want – but the game is about what you did for me yesterday – not two years ago.

The longer the Bulls sit on him – the less value he actually has in a trade. So – let the rest of the league stew awhile. We can afford it.

Take out Gooden and put in Deng and KP might do this. The Bulls are definitely a lottery selection this year, the way they are going. I’ll bet they keep this pick though. – Elgin.

On the topic of trade proposals, it's good practice for ...

people to create hypothetical deals involving teams other than their favorite ballclub. It allows the person to think clearly and objectively by removing any possible bias, while also improving their critical thinking skills.

For example, here’s a trade proposal that involves the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

FROM CLEVELAND & TO MINNESOTA
SG Wally Szczerbiak ($13,775,000)
C Lorenzen Wright ($797,581)
PF Darnell Jackson ($450,000)

FROM MINNESOTA & TO CLEVELAND
SG Mike Miller ($9,128,575)
PF Brian Cardinal ($6,300,000)
C Mark Madsen ($2,630,000)

http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=4840941

For starters, that trade propsoal couldn’t be consummated ‘til 12/15/2008 due to the rules and regulations of the NBA collective bargaining agreement. That’s only a trivial matter, though.

For the Cavaliers, Mike Miller would definitely be a substantial upgrade at the backup wing positions over Wally Szczerbiak. Miller, unlike Szczerbiak, is an superb ball-handler and passer for a swingman, as well as a proficient rebounder. Miller is a sharp-shooting marksman from downtown, too, so he’d replace Szczerbiak in that role without any complications.

For the Timberwolves, Miller, Brian Cardinal, and Mark Madsen are set to earn a combined salary of nearly $20 million during the 2009-2010 season. It, therefore, would be a financially sagacious transaction to trade those three for two guys with expiring contracts (i.e., Szczerbiak & Lorenzen Wright) and a player who’s got a non-guaranteed contract for next season (i.e., Darnell Jackson)—especially since the T’wolves are currently a struggling franchise without a clear-cut direction toward the future.

After signing off on that trade, however, the Cavaliers would also need to soon acquire an upgrade at power forward. In the likelihood of that event, Eric Snow’s heavily insured expiring contract, Aleksander Pavlovic’s contract that includes a non-guaranteed salary for next season, and rookie J.J. Hickson would all be major trading chips. Thus, without a futher ado, the following is a trade proposal that accomplishes said objective.

FROM CLEVELAND & TO OKLAHOMA CITY
PG Eric Snow ($7,312,000)
SF Aleksander Pavlovic ($4,500,000)
PF J.J. Hickson ($1,329,480)

FROM OKLAHOMA CITY & TO CLEVELAND
PF Nick Collison ($6,350,000)
PG Earl Watson ($6,200,000)
SF Damien Wilkins ($3,100,000)

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=34372172796197810272506&teams=252525555&te=&cash=

For the Cavaliers, Nick Collison is an all-around average interior presence who’s capable of splitting time at power forward with what’s left of Ben Wallace. Earl Watson, who’s reportedly complained about the Thunder orgainzation ever since the Professional Basketball Club, LLC purchased the franchise, would provide the Cavaliers with depth at point guard behind Mo Williams and Daniel Gibson. Finally, Damien Wilkins would be a slight improvement at the backup small forward spot — which really isn’t a big deal, particularly for a squad that features LeBron James — over the offensively inept Pavlovic.

For the team formerly known as the Seattle SuperSonics, Collison, Watson, and Wilkins all have contracts that last beyond this season — although Wilkins can dissolve his deal during the upcoming off-season, as he’s got an early termination option in it — thus, it’d be a financially prudent move for the fledgling franchise to part ways with them for Snow, Pavlovic, and Hickson for the abovementioned reasons. The trade, however, would leave the roster extremely thin at both guard spots; consequently, Sam Presti would need to make a couple of small, insignificant moves — such as waiving scrub pivotmen Mouhamed Sene and Steven Hill, while subsequently signing a young, versatile swingman (e.g., Derrick Byars) and a veteran floor general (e.g., Mateen Cleaves) off of the D-League scrap heap — so as to improve the team’s depth.

All right, that’s enough of me pretending to be in Danny Ferry’s shoes for one morning.

I think Cleveland will try to move Wally's expiring deal (and other Z or Wallace next year), so the Minnesota deal makes a lot of sense

The Bucks seem not quite sure if they are trying to rebuild or seriously contend. If they are rebuilding, I could see this happen to get rid of their biggest contract burden who seems to have fallen out of favor with a lot of fans: Michael Redd for Wally, Pavlovic, maybe one more small contract and picks. Works.

Trade suggestion

I don’t know how feasible this would be, but I find it intriguing.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/features/traderesult?players=275445420151006406&teams=1515152222&te=&cash=

My main argument for the Bucks taking this trade is that they would get younger and gain more cap flexibility. The Blazers would get a solid wing defender and a good scorer, win-win right? If you don’t like trading Channing you can replace him with Bayless or Sergio and it still goes through.

Damon Jones probably doesn't make this squad.

So the trade is basically Outlaw and Frye for Jefferson. I wouldn’t do that. – Elgin

Sometimes I think people don't realize

that when you make a trade you’re trying to get more value than what you’re giving up. And you actually don’t need to make a trade every 15 games to “right the ship” when you’re winning and have good team chemistry. The person with the least chemistry in our regular rotation is Oden, who is coming off of a year out of playing basketball, knee surgery, and a foot injury. I’ve got a trade idea – put your trade machines away and give the team a few more months before you think about trading anybody.

That's not true at all

I listened to a Daily Dish podcast with Donnie Walsh and he said what people don’t realize is that when you do a trade, you’re looking for a fair trade. A trade that benefits both teams. He said if all you are doing to trying to get a better deal than the other team, that sooner or later, you’ll run out of trade partners.

The Bayless trade was a fair trade. Bayless will probably have the best NBA career out of everyone in the trade, but Indiana needed someone who could contribute valuable minutes this year. Bayless isn’t ready to do that and Portland has time to wait.

Trade Rumor I Just Saw

Anyone heard anything about this rumor?

The Blazers and Grizzlies are discussing a trade that would send Mike Conley, Hakim Warrick and Javaris Crittenton to the Blazers for Travis Outlaw and Sergio Rodriguez, according to Yahoo! Sports.
The teams could trade Conley for Outlaw straight up, but the other players are thought to be included in the possible deal. Conley and Rodriguez would both likely see a boost in value if they are traded, but Outlaw would probably stay in a reserve role behind Rudy Gay in Memphis (although there’s a chance he could also start at PF). No deal is imminent, but talks are said to be “serious.”

RE: rumor i just saw

I actually like that trade, i think conley would help Oden SOOOOOO much. Oden’s issues are purely mental at this point. My only problem is man i hate to give up Sergio at this point, he has made SUCH an improvement. Plus aquiring Conley basically means Bayless will be trade Fodder later as well, by that i mean conley has basically the same longevity career wise. i personally love bayless and see conley a smallish PG. I may be proved wrong but after damon stoudamire smallish PG’s give me nightmares. We would pretty much be going 2 for 1 here though, our back up PG and 6th man for there (im pretty sure) starting PG. J-critt would play behind blake and Bayless and Warrick behind Frye and maybe even Diogu. Wow this team is stacked.

Conley would help Oden not shuffle his feet and not bring the ball down to gather

himself under basket? Holy Cow! get him immediately!

The only thing that Oden needs is about 3 months out of the spotlight to heal and get some experience.
