Everyone Point and Clap at Dave

New York Magazine loves Dave. From Sam Anderson's review of the Free Darko book

At least once or twice a year, my hatred of Kobe Bryant causes me actual physiological distress. Two decades ago, such single-minded asceticism might have meant a lonely path—a futile lifelong search for congregations of similarly overinvested people. Fortunately, however, we live in a time of spiritual enlightenment, and the Internet is swarming with intelligent, passionate, active, faith-based basketball communities. It strikes me as no coincidence that my favorite basketball blogger, “Dave” from the Portland Trailblazers fan site BlazersEdge—whose essays I read more consistently and happily than those of most professional columnists—also happens to be a pastor.

Now that is cool.

DAVE'S A PASTOR?

No wonder there’s no swearing.

Oh, and first.

I lost.

I re-challenged.

Lost again.

Re-challenged….etc.

I’m currently 0-6 against him.

so

I’m agnostic and I curse a lot on my real life but if I had a blog I’d probably follow Dave’s lead on this.
I think you don’t lose “a lot” of free speech with the rule and you don’t exclude the people who feel uncomfortable reading the F-words and alike.
It also forces you to think a little bit before you write, and that’s always a good thing.

to debate thoughts on Semi-Pelagianism with…..

by Storyteller on Nov 26, 2008 2:47 PM PST up reply actions

That's a pretty common misconception

In real life (gasp!) I swear sometimes. Dum, Dum, DUMMMMMM. However not in public discourse and not when the cost of swearing would potentially outweigh whatever small gain I would make by employing those words for emphasis. That cost/benefit ratio has far more to do with the swearing ban on Blazersedge than my “other” profession.

P.S.

Ben, where was that headline when I was in sixth grade? In a primitive, grade-school-inspired reflex I actually read it as “Everybody Point and Laugh at Dave” the first time through.

re-reading it does look terrible… i was inspired by this. probably my favorite moment of the campaign.

so now… we’ve gotten to religion, swearing and politics in one thread. epic fail here.

Clap clap point point

We need to incorporate that at the Rose Garden. Maybe to take the place of “Hit the Road, Jack” when an opponent fouls out.

BTW, doesn’t one clap for rather than at? (My son’s words echo here : “there’s Mom being a teacher again” [wink])

How many f bombs have you dropped in your day, Dave?

I imagine you’ve said it plenty, but maybe not so many times that you lost count. Or maybe you just prefer the other, more classic four letter variety?

Do you swear to yourself alot? Do you swear when you watch Blazer games, aloud or under your breath? Do you save it for when you’re drinking a cold beer with some old buddies?

It’s definitely a more pleasant environment without wading through the muck… I for one appreciate the rule.

Ben, have you finished the book yet? Any chance you could give us your thoughts? Not a full review (unless you want to, because I’d definitely look forward to it), but what impression it made on you. I’m highly intrigued by this book, and think the artwork is spectacular.

yeah i finished it last week before going to their book launch in seattle. the book rules. it’s a must buy. i will do a “review” as we get closer to christmas. buy it. the book is worth 15 dollars for the pictures alone. or the stats alone. or the writing alone. all together it’s a no-brainer. plus shoals is the man.

When is Dave becoming a free agent?

Should we start panicking now that he’ll be gone in two years? There’s no way we can keep him for good, not with all that talent and marketing potential… right? So then it’s only a matter of time.

Accept it BEdgers… Dave is going to be writing for the New York Times or ESPN before you know it. He’s the best blogger in the league and he’s positioned himself to make a big splash.

It’s been a swell ride, Dave. I’ll follow you anywhere, old buddy.

by Storyteller on Nov 26, 2008 3:05 PM PST up reply actions

True, but I didn't want to point at everyone who's not a Christian and imply that I think only they are terrible

Christians are just as terrible as everyone else. In fact (and I hate to say this), there’s lots of non-Christians I know that are a lot nicer than some Christians I know…..which, although saddening in that Christians are not being that city on a hill that we’re called to be, is something leads me to be even more thankful that God is willing to forgive such bad people.
