Everyone Point and Clap at Dave
New York Magazine loves Dave. From Sam Anderson's review of the Free Darko book.
At least once or twice a year, my hatred of Kobe Bryant causes me actual physiological distress. Two decades ago, such single-minded asceticism might have meant a lonely path—a futile lifelong search for congregations of similarly overinvested people. Fortunately, however, we live in a time of spiritual enlightenment, and the Internet is swarming with intelligent, passionate, active, faith-based basketball communities. It strikes me as no coincidence that my favorite basketball blogger, “Dave” from the Portland Trailblazers fan site BlazersEdge—whose essays I read more consistently and happily than those of most professional columnists—also happens to be a pastor.
Now that is cool.

DAVE'S A PASTOR?
No wonder there’s no swearing.
Oh, and first.

I just challenged that guy to a staring contest.
I lost.
I re-challenged.
Lost again.
Re-challenged….etc.
I’m currently 0-6 against him.
That is really hideous

so
I’m agnostic and I curse a lot on my real life but if I had a blog I’d probably follow Dave’s lead on this.
I think you don’t lose “a lot” of free speech with the rule and you don’t exclude the people who feel uncomfortable reading the F-words and alike.
It also forces you to think a little bit before you write, and that’s always a good thing.
That's a pretty common misconception
In real life (gasp!) I swear sometimes. Dum, Dum, DUMMMMMM. However not in public discourse and not when the cost of swearing would potentially outweigh whatever small gain I would make by employing those words for emphasis. That cost/benefit ratio has far more to do with the swearing ban on Blazersedge than my “other” profession.
—Dave
P.S.
Ben, where was that headline when I was in sixth grade? In a primitive, grade-school-inspired reflex I actually read it as “Everybody Point and Laugh at Dave” the first time through.
—Dave
re-reading it does look terrible… i was inspired by this. probably my favorite moment of the campaign.
so now… we’ve gotten to religion, swearing and politics in one thread. epic fail here.

against all odds...
the conversation has been civil.
It’s unbelievable, miracles REALLY DO happen!

Clap clap point point
We need to incorporate that at the Rose Garden. Maybe to take the place of “Hit the Road, Jack” when an opponent fouls out.
BTW, doesn’t one clap for rather than at? (My son’s words echo here : “there’s Mom being a teacher again” [wink])
How many f bombs have you dropped in your day, Dave?
I imagine you’ve said it plenty, but maybe not so many times that you lost count. Or maybe you just prefer the other, more classic four letter variety?
Do you swear to yourself alot? Do you swear when you watch Blazer games, aloud or under your breath? Do you save it for when you’re drinking a cold beer with some old buddies?
It’s definitely a more pleasant environment without wading through the muck… I for one appreciate the rule.

I've listened to Dave on the radio
and i could tell by his smooth sentences and cool rationale that he is a good guy. And now knowing he is a Pastor, I’ll definitely never attempt to swear on this forum.

I believe
he’s a youth pastor. Having 3 male teenagers at home I can’t imagine guiding the youth without being able to cuss. My hat is off to him!!
There is probably no more terrible instance of enlightenment than the one in which you discover your father is a man — with human flesh.

Your thoughts?
Ben, have you finished the book yet? Any chance you could give us your thoughts? Not a full review (unless you want to, because I’d definitely look forward to it), but what impression it made on you. I’m highly intrigued by this book, and think the artwork is spectacular.
< /war >
yeah i finished it last week before going to their book launch in seattle. the book rules. it’s a must buy. i will do a “review” as we get closer to christmas. buy it. the book is worth 15 dollars for the pictures alone. or the stats alone. or the writing alone. all together it’s a no-brainer. plus shoals is the man.

what's the relationship between dave and the book??

dang it!
I thought about that after I pressed the post button, but rather than humbly admitting i was wrong and correcting myself, i decided i’d see if it would slide under the radar.

When is Dave becoming a free agent?
Should we start panicking now that he’ll be gone in two years? There’s no way we can keep him for good, not with all that talent and marketing potential… right? So then it’s only a matter of time.
Accept it BEdgers… Dave is going to be writing for the New York Times or ESPN before you know it. He’s the best blogger in the league and he’s positioned himself to make a big splash.
It’s been a swell ride, Dave. I’ll follow you anywhere, old buddy.

When Bill Simmons is fired for using too many salacious pop culture references by an annoyed editor
Or Dave is hired to replace Marc Stein for their draft day columns of logic vs. gut.
"For such a dumb kid, you've got a pretty smart mouth."
Wrong
Dave is here for life.
Ben is the problem, we can’t afford another max salary.

What the ......?
The must be a mistake with your link, Ben. I clicked for a FREE Darko book and the price came up as $15.64
That is really hideous

Why should I buy a Darko book that is free?
Just kidding, it’s a beautiful piece of basketball art and already on my Christmas wish list.
And congratulations to Dave for the recognition by a national columnist who really knows how to recognize good writing.
"For such a dumb kid, you've got a pretty smart mouth."
Yup
I definitley appreciate Dave’s insight and wisdom. We’re lucky to have him.

He is indeed
Nice to see him get the shout-out from Anderson.
Even if he was a horrible person, Dave’s analysis would be worth reading. The fact that he’s such a good guy just adds to ‘must read-ness’.
Dave's a terrible person
He just hides it really well, which makes him even worse.
I hate to reveal it, but once when he was a kid, Dave frowned at a puppy.

What kind, though?
Snarling pit bull? Undersized chocolate lab? Freaky-looking chihauha?
Not all frowns are bad…..
ahhh therein lies the key
Dave’s a terrible person
That is fundamental. Christians are terrible people…we’ve just been forgiven by a very good God.
That is really hideous
--jscot
True, but I didn't want to point at everyone who's not a Christian and imply that I think only they are terrible
Christians are just as terrible as everyone else. In fact (and I hate to say this), there’s lots of non-Christians I know that are a lot nicer than some Christians I know…..which, although saddening in that Christians are not being that city on a hill that we’re called to be, is something leads me to be even more thankful that God is willing to forgive such bad people.

Lots of love
Living here in San Diego I can attest to the national love for BE. Whenever I come across another serious NBA fan of another team they always mention how awesome this site is. This is coming from Warriors fans to Celtics fans. Dave you rock.
Awww Dave you are famous, Dont forget who your real friends are

hence the reason he blogs and shills blazersedge t-shirts to no end.

New York Mag huh....
Is Dave a latte sipping elitist? How can he relate to us finger wagging, beer drinking, 300-level sitting, loud burpin fans. Dave probably owns TWO computers and uses a spell checker…..
Congrats on being recognized for the quality work you put out Dave.
Anybody bought the Free Darko book? I like to hear some opinions on it.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
If that is bad

Oh, I just HAVE to ask...
… about the one-half laptop. Wait – is it one of those tablet things? I think no keyboard might possibly constitute a half a laptop.
Congratulations, Dave.
I´m not surprised at all.

Wonderful recognition Dave
from so far away. It doesn’t surprise me. For years I’ve feared the possibility of you moving on to bigger sport things than our blog. I’d always guessed that could be in the Blazer organization, but am now thinking the limits may not end there.
Anyway, congratulations.
asceticism?
And I was a honors English student in college. Never heard of that word.
