Getting LeBron to Portland - by H Abbott
Have you guys seen this from Henry Abbott?
Skip down to the end where he (and David Thorpe) come up with a couple of trade suggestions.
Anybody here willing to make those trades?
Not me. Not by a country mile. Why gut the team for James?
No worries though. By the time Cleveland would have to start considering trading him, Portland will be so good that we won't need LeBron.

HELLZ NO
He suggests pretty much trading the entire team for LeBron and Ilgauskas. I couldn’t say no fast enough. It’d pretty much gut everything KP and the organization has worked for the past 4 years for a one-time shot at dethroning Kobe.
Of course, the alternative consensus is that no team is better situated to be The Team of the next decade, contending every year.

that is,
the Blazers are already set up to contend for a long time. Why sacrifice that for ANYTHING, especially a huge roll of the dice?

I'd demand to keep Rudy in that deal
This lineup could conceivably win a championship
Joel
LMA
Lebron
Rudy
Blake/Bayless/Sergio/Nate McMillan/Baby point guard
That is really hideous

scratch that, we could win the western conference championship every year
we’d be too busy losing to cleveland every year for the NBA championship.
That is really hideous

No and no
- I’m starting to feel like Joel is the third most untradeable player on the team, because there’s a replacement for everybody but him, and he’s the difference between a team that can win and a team that will win.
- Baby point guard is the future!
(Actually, baby point guard was a very funny addition. ;-)
- I think for a superstar you would consider trading LMA and Rudy, though I love them.

I could handle the first one
The second one leaves an empty team around LeBron and he’d ditch as soon as he could. I think LeBon and Oden together could hurt a lot of people.

We'd lose SO MUCH of our season ticket holder base though
right now we have young chicks like sophia and twiggs coming solely to see hot guys like batum and rudy. Imagine if we traded everyone to get Lebron and keep Oden.
The only people who would come to the game would be the die-hards and the 55 year old single grandmas
That is really hideous

For like a game
You know everyone would watch the game on ESPN and then be back at the Rose Garden the next home game. I worry that getting LeBron will prevent us from getting Kobe.

thats sad if rudy and batum
were the SOLE reasons they are ticket holders.

That's not an outrageous suggestion.
However there is one big reason I would reject it out of hand.
LeBron has his eyes set on something past an NBA championship. He wants icon status similar to Jordan and Tigar Woods. And while he realizes he is likely going to have to win a title or so along the way, that is not his ultimate goal. Keep in mind that guys like Jordan and Woods generate product marketing and endorsement revenue streams far in excess of the money they earn in their professions. I would have to have very strong assurances that James would be in Portland for the long term.

I'm sorry, but I just can't fathom Brandon Roy not being a part of this team.
Maybe it’s stupid sentimentalism on my part, but I’d trade anyone else on the team before I traded Roy.
I’d offer up LMA or Oden before I traded Roy. Come to think of it, a package of Oden, Rudy, Outlaw, Bayless, RLEC and some draft picks might be enough to get LeBron over here.
Eh, probably not, actually. I can’t imagine the Cavs would do any deal for LeBron with Portland that didn’t involve Roy. And as such, I just can’t say I’d approve of one.
Yes! Yes! In the face!

yep
Roy is going nowwhere. Dave had a good post about all the trade dynamics about a month ago… I think he was pretty much right on.

No, it is not stupid sentimentalism...
Trading Brandon Roy for LeBron would be an all out heart transplant. An extremely dangerous proposition even under the best of circumstances. I say we keep our heart right where it belongs. PERIOD

even if these hypothetical trades work on paper
they may not work out on the court. you can’t really predict how a players chemistry with his teammates will be. hell…when denver traded for AI the media thought they would be immediate contenders.

Roy is the untouchable franchise player. If LeBron comes, Roy will still be on the team. No matter what happens.

Ridiculous.
No effin way. if u look at the production alone that we lose, its not worth it in what we gain.

Even if the trade made perfect sense
from a basketball standpoint, the Blazers would still have the problem of convincing LeBron to remain in Portland after his contract expires.
I’ve made this pojnt before but it bears repeating: LeBron’s issue in Cleveland is not so much whether or not the Cavs will ever win a title. His real problem is that it’s not a large enough media market to help him realize his publicly stated ambitions to be the most famous athlete on Earth and as rich as Croesus.
There’s only two NBA markets big enough to help LeBron meet his goals. Here’s a hint: One of them isn’t Portland.

Awesome player, but seems like a shallow, pos person. Just my opinion based on watching him for 5 years and hearing about him for 9.

it's about team
Stars belong in the sky…where they really want to be…they emit their own light…..If there is an all star player out there for Portland, I’d much rather it be Dwayne Wade…A planet….that shines because it reflects light….
I simply don’t get all this gush about James….even if he had BBIQ……So don’t play all your valuable chips on a player that is not a franchise player…..
The thought of this guy on our team, makes me cringe….Don’t like him at all………….

There is nothing shallow about wanting to maximize one's potential
And while James’ basketball potential is nearly unlimited, what he can achieve on the court pales in comparison to becoming a worldwide icon.

We wait till 2010
We could do a sign an trade with cleveland. They would have no choice to do it casue they could not let Lebron walk and get nothin in return. We could give them LMA, Outlaw/Webster depending who is still on the team, Bayless, another minor player to make the contracts match, then draft picks galore. Like I said cleveland would do it casue something would be better then nothing for Lebron. But the big key here is that Lebron would want to sign with us, and that would be the tuffest part. This is also better then trading for him now or next year cause we could trade for Lebron then still have him leave after 2010.

Hey, cross-posting fun. So it's 1989
and I offer you Jordan for Drexler, Kersey, and Terry Porter. You all really turning that down?
And I actually think there’s a bigger gap between 2009 Roy and James versus 1989 Drexler and Jordan.
I’d prefer the HA version over the DT version (I like Oden more than LMA) but I’d make either trade, if Bronbron agreed to a max extension as a condition of completing the trade. For one thing, I think we can kiss our dreams of multiple banners goodbye if the Knicks succeed in Operation Unite LBJ/Bosh/Wade/Nash.
by howlingfantods on Nov 26, 2008 1:49 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
naw...in 2 years Nash is DEF going to be running out of gas
but LBJ + Wade + bosh is DEF scary, but then again, so is LMA + ROY + ODEN if all pans out (since we are on the subject of hypotheticals.)

if we had kp back then
he would have convinced sabas to come over the same way he convinced rudy….Adelmans blazers + sabas = no michael jordan era. definitely no 2x 3 peats.

Hmm, ok.
I still would’ve liked Sabas + MJ, Buck, Ainge and Drazen over Sabs + Drexler, Buck, Kersey, and Porter. Which is kind of the point I’m making here, and not any kind of point about Sabs.

just the same way he played behind drexler he would have played behind mj.

Phily gots to put history into context
As much talent as KP has I dont think he would have enough to bring Sabonis to Portland at that time. The problem wasn’t getting Sabonis to want to come over, the problem was getting the little known communist counrty named the Soviet Union to let Sabonis come over and play.
by ggassen85 on Nov 26, 2008 11:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
oh
i was really young at the time so i’m pretty sure i could be wrong, but i could have sworn that sabas didn’t want to or wasnt 100% into coming over unlike rudy was for various reasons.

I don't believe that is correct..
They were already letting hockey players come over by then.
Sabonis didn’t come over because he didn’t want to. He was comfortable with where he was.

Hell YEA!
We would basically become the Cavaliers, and they would become the Blazers. Stupid.
Last time I checked, the Cavs went to the finals two years ago and then took the Celtics to seven games last year. Oh yea, they are one of the hottest teams in the NBA at 11-3. Look, I love Roy too, but we are looking at the best player in the NBA. The possibility of pairing LeBron with Oden, think about the monster dunks!

have to say
Heck no to this. Why trade our whole team for him thats redonkulos. Why is everyone so flippin high on Lebron anyway? yeah he is an awesome player. But if I had to chose 1 player to start my team with, it would be roy hands down. He is the energy that makes the moster come to life.
Here is my prediction for the new year, 1 Stephen A will get Pritch Slapped, 2 A Blazers playoff birth, 3 Joel will win MIP this year, 4 Raef will win cheerleader of the yeah and come in 2nd to most overpaid not player play next to Starbury

HMMM!
I think everyone is failing to see that Lebron wants to Market himslef and become the highest paid athelete in history. I don’t think he is as interested in banners and rings as he is in making himslef a brand. If he got traded to Portland he would just leave when is contract was up leaving us with nothing about 4 years down the road. What is wrong with the team we have now. Why not just keep them together for a few years and see what happens.
