Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Chill, we're 9-6. Scratch that; we're 10-6.

So, last nights win was about the ugliest thing since since Medusa.  Not to mention that we have had many lousy performances against bad teams.  I mean really bad performances that make you wonder if the Blazers might get themselves back into the lottery.

But it was a win, and we're 9-6.

And LaMarcus has been shooting like a one armed rifleman for the better part of the season.  He looks like a kid in a Toys'r'us that just realized that he's lost his parents with the ball in his hands lately.  Is he a bust now?

His D is still solid, and we're still 9-6.

Plus GO has shown flashes of Shaq, Robinson, Mark Eaton, and Manute Bol- sometimes all in the same game.  I mean I've never seen a guy look so dominant and lost at the same time.  I don't know if he is ever going to get it together.

But somehow the team keeps scrapping out wins, and we're 9-6.

I'm really uncomfortable with the inconsistency in our offense and our reliance on guys that aren't always able to produce.  I'm sure that there is somebody in the league we can get RIGHT NOW that can ease our reliance on these guys.  Rudy's been shooting terribly lately.  Outlaw, ohmygoodnessdon'tgetmestartedonOutlaw.  Even the aforementioned Aldridge is struggling in ways we've never seen before.

Yeah but we have 3 Rookies getting serious time, none of whom have played more than about 3 games a week at any given time, an injured starting small forward, and a team that - for the first time - is getting a good effort from every team on almost every night.  We also have played 9 of 15 games on the road, all of our losses have come on the road against good teams (except Golden State) and we've stolen some from good teams on the road.

And we're still 9-6.  With all that room for improvement.  I think we're OK.

So, chill and enjoy the ride.  I know I will.

Start of season

Honestly i could not have forseen a better start to our season(besides the oden injury, ofcourse) than this, I mean it seems like we honestly dont get the credit deserved. This was THE most difficult start of any schedule ever created(fact) and we have come out the other end 3 games over .500. Realize people this is the same team that was 5-12 untill our 13 game win streak in december last year, DECEMBER! We are certainly not that team anymore and they went 41-41. Are we struggling to find chemistry with oden? yes Is our offense inconstistent at times, yes? But wow, what a start so far! Roy is my MVP of the league, without him we are that 5-12 team from last year if not worse. All esle will fall into place, i believe.

Not a comma…at least I think.

I'm pretty sure that there are

no more than 4 people in the whole world that can reach an accurate consensus on the exact function of the semicolon. There is no way you can convince me that you are one of those 4. ;D

Having said that, I am waaaay too far removed from routinely having to use proper grammar in my daily goings on to argue with you.

well....
n.

A mark of punctuation (;) used to connect independent clauses and indicating a closer relationship between the clauses than a period does.

Chill is an independant clause, with the implied subject being the reader…i.e. (You) chill. We’re 9-6. Instead of using periods, you just use a semi-colon, because there’s a strong relationship between the two clauses.

Ouch

that was a pretty serious rebuttal. You may in fact be 1 of the 4. I bow down to your intellect.

The Blazers are on track and playing well

What’s worrisome is that the 8 teams that made the West playoffs last year look really tough. Dallas has won 5 straight, Ginobili is back and post-Billups Denver looks great. A really good team from the West is going to miss the playoffs. It could be the Blazers… but its hardly panic time right now.

by jksnake99 on Nov 25, 2008 9:50 PM PST reply actions

what he said.

We knew, as soon as the Nuggets got Billups, there was one less playoff spot available. It will be Dallas, Golden State and Portland fighting for that eighth spot. We may need 50 wins again this year to get in!

by Blazin' on Nov 25, 2008 10:26 PM PST up reply actions

Start rooting against Dallas

Looked like they were going to keel over. Unfortunately not. And Denver’s here to stay. Billups may be the most underrated player in the league (I know people think he’s good, but when most commentators are saying Iverson was the best player in that trade, laughter is in order – I think Billups is second only to CP3 as PGs go).

The shiny 9-6 record is great. Catching a few breaks is great. I thought going into the season the Blazers had a chance to be right there with New Orleans, Utah, Dallas, Phoenix, etc. To make the playoffs, they’re going to have to be.

but i was struck by Pritchard’s comments when the trade went down, “Denver is now a playoff team,” he said. Seemed a little uncharacteristic….

Dallas should be the odd man out

The trade for Kidd was a collossal misstep. Dallas is playing all out and above their heads to get back into it. Kidd is a great player but his legs are slowing. Dirk is still an all-star and Terry is very, very good. But they should have kept that PG they sent to Jersey. The Mavs arn’t likely to be able to maintain the energy required over the next 70 odd games to make the playoffs.

But yes if they do it will be a nine team dog fight in the west. What is exiting is that we are involved after a half decade hiatus.

by Blazersaurus on Nov 26, 2008 7:20 AM PST reply actions

That was a bad trade.

That was a bad trade. Kidd is getting on. Dirk and JT are good, but I agree they’ll regret giving up Devin Harris to NJ.

by CanadianBlazerfan on Nov 26, 2008 5:17 PM PST up reply actions

It will depends on 2 things:

1. Who will get better during the season
2 Who has more luck with injuries/more depth to deal with them.

1. We’ll definitely get better.
2. We have a lot of injury prone players but so do the other teams and we have more depth than them.

So I think we’re fine.
