Buffet of Not-So-Goodness?
I hate to be negative in any way about our team this year (especially with regard to an interesting and intelligent guy like Channing Frye) But -- it seems to me that Frye is a prime candidate for a mid-season trade:
I had an open mind about Frye coming into this year, but after seeing him play substantial minutes throughout the first month of the season, it has become clear to me that the Blazers will need to make an upgrade at the back-up power forward position in order to get to where they want to be.
Channing will have some good shooting nights along the way, but that doesn't change the fact that he is soft in the post, and he gives away far too many cheap fouls which end up putting us in the penalty too quickly.
Personally, I would love to see the Blazers make a move for David Lee of the Knicks. Here is a player breakdown on him from John Hollinger:
I'm not an expert at such things, so I don't know how this might be achieved. Hollinger mentions that the Knicks will likely look to trade Lee before next season rather than re-sign him because they are looking to free up additional cap-space.
So, I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on whether Channing will be an important contributor to this team long term -- And/Or
If not, who would be a good candidate to fill the back-up power forward position. (ie - possible trade scenarios.)

He seems like a GREAT guy...The kind you would really want on your team, but I think you are right
"People? You man Sheeple."
I fully expect Channing Frye will have a very long career as a TV commentator, hopefully with the Blazers...
………………. and he’s obviously a really nice guy, probably my favorite personality on the team.
But he’s a jumpshooter and I HATE power forwards that think they are jumpshooters.
David Lee gets an AWESOME rating from me.
"Now with a non-provocative footer!"
Timbo speaks the truth
But he’s a jumpshooter and I HATE power forwards that think they are jumpshooters.
And the other side of this is we already HAVE a PF who can shoot outside (or at least used to be able to) in Aldridge. He needs to round his game out, but that is a whole different subject.
The point being, we have shooters in the second unit. Rudy and Travis can hit open looks outside just fine. If our 2nd unit is to be a change of pace unit, we need a 4 who is banging down low and getting second chance points, not drifting around the perimeter. David Lee is a baller.
"I like blocks," Fernandez said.
I like Trout at PF
Maybe he’s a little undersized, but with his long arms and athleticism I think he can still defend the big guys.
Offensively, I love the matchup. He’ll be able to get a little more dribble penetration against a bigger guy, so he doesn’t have to do that weird dance where he tries to drive, gets stymied at every turn, then takes an off-balance shot. Either he’ll be able to get by his man, or he’ll have a little more room to work and take a higher percentage jumper.
Also, that lets us keep Martell and Batum, two guys I like a lot.
As far as trading Channing goes, I’m all for it, assuming you can get something for him. I’m not sure what the market is like for a soft power forward who can’t do anything except make the occasional 18 footer. Of course, he’s got a great personality. As in, “is she cute?” “Well, she’s got a great personality…”
Donnie Walsh will only trade David Lee if he can package the ...
massively out of shape and vastly overpaid Eddy Curry in the deal.
Meanwhile, though, my guess is that the New York Knicks will stand pat unless Walsh can somehow swing another cost-cutting trade. For example, a hypothetical transaction of Malik Rose and Jared Jeffries being dealt to the Chicago Bulls for Larry Hughes would cut $6,883,800 from New York’s books come 2010.
Besides, Lee is currently entreched at the pivot in Mike D’Antoni’s fast-paced, up-tempo offense.
Ben started a pretty interesting discussion in the junk drawer yesterday that ties into "Frye and Lee"
Trade: ESPN
Explanation:
Basically we would trade raef/channing for even more cap space. i think the knicks would do it because all 3 incoming contracts are expiring and they really want to be rid of marbury.
OBVIOUSLY we would not play marbury. we would just give him raef’s inactive spot and keep him away from the team. wait for his 20 mill to come off the books. would they include david lee? i guess thats the only question. i think the financial relief of raef’s insurance would be enough to pursuade them. plus channing would fit well with dantoni. this also helps us consolidate one roster spot. thoughts?
My take:
Lee would be a great backup for us who would bring something completely different than Frye to the table. Yet I’m not sure about the deal since Lee is expiring and wants to be paid big money according to everything out of NY (> MLE to < $10M) – and preferably also start. And Marbury’s contract is pretty much unmovable at the deadline unlike Raef’s, so he would have to be bought out if NY doesn’t find a “dumb” taker (that would be us in that scenario). But it is an idea of how to benefit from the Knicks’ effort to get far under the cap.
"For such a dumb kid, you've got a pretty smart mouth."
The New York Knicks would immediately decline that trade proposal. It undervalues David Lee.
In addition, that trade proposal wouldn’t help the Knicks get further under the salary cap come 2010.
Again, the only way that Donnie Walsh will part with Lee is if he can dump Eddy Curry in the process.
and You're undervaluing Raef's contract
Especially since he’s being paid by insurance.
Personally, I think they’d jump at that deal.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
That doesn't get at the crux of this issue, though.
As it is, David Lee won’t be dealt unless Eddy Curry is somehow packaged in the deal.
Additionally, the Knicks are solely focused on garnering more cap space come 2010; thus, Curry and Jared Jeffries are the two exorbitantly overpaid players who Donnie Walsh will try his hardest to dump within the next few months.
TRADE PROPOSAL #1
FROM CHICAGO & TO NEW YORK
SF/SG Larry Hughes ($12,827,676)
FROM NEW YORK & TO CHICAGO
PF Malik Rose ($7,647,500)
SF Jared Jeffries ($6,049,400)
For the Knicks, Hughes contract ends after the 2009-2010 season; that’d cut $6,883,800 from the Knicks’ books come the summer of 2010.
For the Bulls, Malik Rose has a sizeable expiring contract; thus, it’d allow John Paxson to re-sign Ben Gordon this off-season — or, perhaps, make a run at potential free-agent Carlos Boozer to improve its scoring in the low-post — without exceeding the luxury tax for the 2009-2010 season.
TRADE PROPOSAL #2
FROM DALLAS & TO NEW YORK
SF/SG Jerry Stackhouse ($7,000,000)
PF/SF Shawne Williams ($1,572,960)
FROM NEW YORK & TO DALLAS
C Eddy Curry ($9,723,983)
http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=4837984
For the Knicks, the over-the-hill, washed-up has-been Jerry Stackhouse and the out-‘n’-out bust Shawne Williams have contracts that expire after the 2009-2010 season — while Stackhouse’s salary for that season just partially guaranteed for $2,000,000 — so that’ll clear future salary cap space.
For the Mavericks, Eddy Curry would form a balanced platoon at center with Erick Dampier. Curry is 100% offense and 0% defense, while Dampier is 0% offense and 100% defense. It’s definitely not a tandem that I’d approve of for my favorite team, but the Mavericks are in desperation mode.
On a side note, Williams can’t be traded in conjuction with another player ’til 12/10/2008.
All right, I’ll let y’all chew on those realistic trade proposals for a bit.
Well
If we trade Frye for Lee then we have:
Batum
Webster
Outlaw
Lee
We could shift Outlaw to the PF spot but then Batum would never see the light of day.
If Lee wants to start that could be a problem as well
Michael....Tell them what they've won!!!!!!!....... *iinsert reference to a baseketball game*
Lee's a 4, outlaw will play at the 4 as well when webster is back.
You could even have Lee play as a center, he’d be the “just in case” option at that position.
I agree, seems like a nice guy, not such a great basketball player
His skillset: shooting 20-footers reasonably well
…
no, there’s nothing more.

I don't like the poll options
I don’t think Frye is part of the long term future of the team (though he may be the best option available if he signs cheap). However, I don’t think we should be looking for an upgrade at that position. Instead, I think our back up becomes Outlaw (ensuring him the minutes that he needs as Batum develops). Furthermore, I think back-up power forward is way down my list of places to upgrade, with a point gaurd, maybe a small forward, and a lock down wing defender at any position far outweighing PF.
I would like Frye if he did something well besides just chucking up shots
Being able to pass, dribble, and rebound is kind of important in basketball.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
Larry Brown's words about Sheed ring true about Frye too.
“He needs to play like a guy who’s 6’11”. Not like a guy that’s 5’11"."
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
Unlike Channing Frye, Rasheed Wallace can ...
effectively defend opposing pivotmen in the interior.
Wallace can frequently drain it from beyond the arc, too, which isn’t the case with Frye.
Very true.
But I’d still like to see Fry acting like a guy that’s 6’11".

Forgive me for being cranky about this.
But can we really get over this grass-is-greener attitude that’s been going around lately? No one is looking at the positives that Channing brings to the floor, but instead are wallowing in discontentment. In that Sacramento game, their bigs drew ours out of the middle and opened up their inside game. Channing, when he was on the floor was doing the same. Granted, Channing’s percentages are down this year, but he still has the reputation of a good-shooting bigman. You have to go guard Channing. That opens up the middle for our wing players to attack. It’s not Channing’s fault that they don’t. Sure, he’s a little softer than we would like, but he’s a back-up. 9th man on the bench. That is why I just don’t get this statement:
…the Blazers will need to make an upgrade at the back-up power forward position in order to get to where they want to be.
For all those who want to dump Channing, what are you going to get for him? A middle-clogging, offensive-deficient 6’10" clod? How does that help? And if it did, wouldn’t Diogu get more playing time? Channing fits with the offense that the Blazers are running. If he can pick up that shooting percentage, and work as getting a cople more rebounds, he’ll be spot-on perfect in his position as our 9th man.
Can this be argued? Sure, but no one is doing that. Nothing but an avalanche of “Frye Sucks” posts. I’m sick of all the whining, and the win-now-or-die mentality that’s been going around. Gameday threads are practically unreadable anymore. The troll-infected board at Sactown Royalty was better than our fans whining about a win.

I've been watching
for Diogu for this reason. I really really like Channing, but frankly LMA hasn’t impressed me this season or last, and Channing seems to have the same deficiencies. Those are, in no particular order, a tendency to shoot from distance, weak rebounding, and lack of confidence to play through the rough patches.
I always read how SF and PG are the needs for this team, but frankly, I’m just not sold on LMA as part of the big 3. I can’t really think of any games where he’s been a serious factor in deciding the game — Joel provides more clutch 4th qtr play than LMA.
It seems like LMA/Frya are in place to play off Oden. MAybe we’ll see more out of them as Oden works into the chemistry of the first unit.
But honestly, I would like to see more plays like Outlaw’s driving slam from the end of the CHI game. None of our forwards ever seems to attack the rim with regularity. Sergio does. Even Blake does. But our forwards are, to some extent, chuckers.
I understand the problem with clogging the paint, but I guess I don’t understand why a more powerful PF wouldn’t help this team. Okay, the middle gets a bit more clogged. Some of our best production on broken plays has occurred with tight inside passing against 3 or more defenders. Why is getting more inside, high percentage shots a bad thing?
LMA and Frye having such similar games ultimately only limits the looks we can show other teams.
Good Stuff
I also like Brandon Bass, and almost mentioned him in the post. I’m not sure the Mavs would go for a straight up trade of Frye for Bass, but if we could bring him in somehow I’d be happy.
I agree that Travis works well as a Power Forward off the bench, that was very apparent last year. I think that when Martell comes back, Travis will get a lot of the minutes that Frye is currently getting at back-up power forward, and that will be good for the Blazers.
Blazerhopeful – Not to confuse the issue, but my long-term vision involves the Blazers signing Hedo Turkoglu as a free agent this coming off-season, and becoming our starting Small Forward. To me, that would make Martell and/or Travis expendable for other trades (ie point guard), leaving Batum as a young solid back-up Small Forward with a huge upside.
TDarkstar – I understand where you’re coming from about the “grass is greener” attitude. Like I said, I love our team this year, and I’m looking forward to an exciting and successful season. However, it’s likely that the Blazers will make some roster moves before they become that true title contender that we all believe they can be. The only question is what will those moves be? Guessing at that, and giving our opinions is part of the fun of being a fan, right?
Agreed, he is gross - But
His game and his stats are sick (pun intended). It’s not a beauty contest.
He won the Most Improved Player award last year.
He is averaging 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists so far this year.
He just scored 35 points on our Blazers the other day.
His career 3 point percentage is just under 40%.
He operates as a “point forward” which lessens the need for a point guard.
He’s a veteran with playoff experience.
And – I’ve never heard anyone say he’s a bad teammate.
I did, but it's a while ago
When the European basketball championships were in Turkey in 2001, he and Okur demanded their own limousine while the rest of the team had to take the bus to games and trainings. But in recent years, he seems to have cleared up and played well for his national team without the antics.
He is a little on the older side, but he would be one of the best available unrestricted free agents next summer (if he uses his ETO) so the Blazers must pay attention to him.

Maybe he can be a color commentator, or take Luftman’s spot! That would be awesome.

you say this
yet teams like the L*KERS use people like Luke Walton and Kwame Brown in Frye’s place. Detroit uses McDyess in Frye’s place. Boston used old man PJ Brown. Would you take any of these guys over Frye?
Frye’s happy with the limited minutes he gets. That’s a rarity in this league. He LOVES PDX. He made it his adopted home. That’s a rarity. He’s a glue guy and great chemistry/locker room presence guy. That’s a rarity. He’s a great intelligent guy to interview and puts together a great blog in his spare time. Why would you give something like that away?
