Gameday Open Thread: Kings vs. Blazers--Second Half
I'm watching the game via Tivo tonight so I have no idea what has gone on so far, but I'm opening the second half thread anyway. Take your pick of snappy sayings to open the conversation:
1. W00T! That was awesome! The Blazers are the most dominant team EVAH!
2. Oh man, they better pick it up if they want to come back and win this one. Another half like this would be disappointing.
3. Meh. Good enough, just pull it out at the end.
4. Why was Sergio naked? I've never seen anything like that before!

Chicago wins
CRAZY finish in Chicago. Neither team could stop the other down the stretch and Hughes hits a winner at the buzzer off a long rebound off a Rose miss.
Which gives Denver the division lead.
Did anyone see THAT coming at this point in the season?
Wow Chicago stuns utah in wild one in Salt Lake
They win on a last second shot by Hughes. Anything can happen
Dave option #3 seems to be
where we are headed.
"I saw him in the face" Sergio's quote on the latest alley-oop to Rudy.

CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN! CUBS WIN!!!!

Blazers playing poorly
LMA and Oden in particular are stinking up the Rose Garden. I wonder when Oden is going to show some energy. The dude is just listless out there.
We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

3 quarter collapse
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
They've disproven that enough times
that it’s just noise if you say it when they do have problems in the third.
Well
its just a reminder of whats been going on allot. 15 games is nothing compared to long history of the same collapse.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
Yeah but a lot of this team wasn't here for that long history
And believe me, I know that history too.
go Blazers!

Sacramento is scoring at will right now
Portland looks sluggish. No inside defense. No inside offense.
Man, I wonder if it's just that teams are scouting Oden
or if he’s simply having problems with cardio still
man
when Oden sets picks its ugly. He should stay inside for rebounds not set picks.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
HE's gotta learn how sometime in a real game.
Might as well be against the Kings.

ok, is anyone else getting frustrated with his footwork? i know ur supposed to move laterally by moving ur feet side to side, but he gets beat EVERY TIME. how bout running to the spot a little rather than using simple lateral movement and getting beat everytime u go out to help?
i hate everything about the kings. theyre just like warriors in their NONBASKETBALL ways. this is why i dont care if the blazers lose literally every game to each of these teams. theyre both bad, but i wouldnt be surprised thruout the year if they make good teams look stupid. like play outside in more Kings, i really dont like them.

he is a good defender and a smart player. i just feel he is not playing like he could. my expectations are that he’ll do well on the defensive end and dunk on the offensive end. those expectations are not high. that is a cop out for u to say that.
i am sure he will improve, but its frustrating when people start citing his +/- and joel’s play. i just want to see a little more out of him so the detractors will silence somewhat.

Guaranteed Rose bowl for OSU + USC gets BCS bid. Since there is shared profits from any BCS berth among all PAC 10 teams, the Ducks have 1.7 million reasons to lose, cause if they lose, they still win.
1.7 million is worth beating the Beavers on their turf.

At least LMA got a double-double
tears He seriously needs to get out of his funk. It’ll help Oden, too, y’know.
I don't know if I should be happy about this game or not...
Okay, we won. I’ll be happy. Until this year, we lost this type of game by 10 or more. You look at the stat line, and it’s ugly.
But we won! I’ll be happy about that, and assume Nate will fix things before our next game.
Brandon Roy
was amazing tonight. We got nothing-nada-zilch from Oden, Aldridge and Rudy and he did it on his own.
Terrible effort by the Blazers tonight. Aldridge’s jumper was (is?) worse than mine, Oden was a non-factor on D and a turnover machine on O (for the 5th straight game his plus minus was terrible compared to Przy— this is a pattern now folks… this team is really struggling when Oden is in the game). Rudy is out of rhythm.
We got the win, but we have to get back to not turning it over and we have to get something from Aldridge/Oden/Rudy. Roy can’t do it by himself against good teams.

If Oden is going to be our big man patroling the middle for us for the next 10-12+ years, he has to get acclimated to playing with Roy, Aldridge, etc. Its going to take some time, but I’d hoped by now people would have learned to have a little patience. He’s still just 20 years old, and has played just 9 NBA regular season games. He’s not going to immediately be Dwight Howard, Shaq, or David Robinson. People just need to relax.

Ugh. I guess I’ll take it over 14 points!
Remember a few days ago
One columnist wrote that Oden have not arived after his 20 point and 10 rebound game against the Warriors. And all fans went crazy at that notion. Has Oden arived yet? I dont think so.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.
The problem with that column
Was that it assumed fans were saying he’d arrived. Most fans were still simply cautiously optimistic.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s nonplussed that Oden is going through some struggles.
And here's the final box, Sacramento shooting 46.5%, Blazers shooting 40.5%

There is nothing wrong
The team has no clue how to use him on offense. Oden is slow, lacks agility, and has no offensive game. Hard to properly use someone like that.
LMA is just missing tons of shots that we’ve seen him make. His going through the worst shooting slump of his career. On top of that, his game doesn’t help him get to the free throw line so he’s trying to shoot out of a slump like a guard.

And the Blazers will lose games they could have won if he’d been parked on the bench.

It's all a matter of the positives outweighing the negatives... Sergio is still shooting right at The Rodriguez Line (.350) for the year, but he's not jacking up so many shots that this is a significant problem. Agree that he has taken his game up a notch

Did like Sergio's hands on defense tonight
3 steals and his hands were on a bunch of other balls. Like to see that.

Sergio is awesome at defending the 2 on 1
He is great at anticipating when the pass is going to come.

He is good at stealing the ball and great at passing the ball. He is competent at driving the lane but has some trouble finishing. The perimeter jumpers -- not so much.
……………… As long as he’s not hoisting more than about 3 shots a night, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

Reserve the judgment.
He had three double doubles in a row and we wouldn’t have won at Minnesota without him.
The team has maintained that we should wait til Game 42 to see the real Greg Oden.
I mean, you could say Thompson isn't going to be productive this season
based off his zero point effort tonight, but he will be productive, off and on. That’s what rookies do.
The difference with JT though...
Is that this is the ONLY game that he was off
Oden has been off more than once
It’s not his fault, like I said he’s just not ready to start and it’s unfair for Nate to put that kind of pressure on the guy.
Let him mature more before you force him into the starting lineup like that
"It's as Ann as the nose on plain's face."
He's going to have to learn.
He’s taking his lumps right now. It sucks to watch. But… there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

they whole team lacked energy and focus...
they took the Kings lightly and paid for it….almost.
I would have blame Dean Demopoulos
I hate that guy
Nobody every blames Dean
When it comes time to point the finger of blame, it’s always Nate. Or Travis. Or LMA. Or Oden. Or Sergio. Or the refs.
But Demopoulos always skates. It’s high time he were held accountable for a change.
We have to do a better job of using Rudy
he was open a few times and we missed him.
Then again he was pretty bad tonight when we did find him. Some ugly shots and two bad turnovers.
Boomshakalaka
Rudy wasent to tired to knock down
an open shot like that but Travis has black hole,0 court vision and if he could hit a free throw once in a while or play just a little D it would have been a 6 or 8 point game

Teams are starting to get the scouting report
Push up on him and make him drive. Rudy must adjust his game. He won’t be having the same looks.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
yeah, 1-4.
he’s great at moving without the ball, but if a defender catches up to him, he doesn’t take advantage of any space or momentum. he needs to make em pay by driving it hard in if he has space, or fake if they’re closing fast.
Rudy is used to playing with guys with passing skills
So playing with Travis and to a lesser extent Channing must be frustrating for him

Its kits of funny how we expected Rudy, Aldridge and Oden to come out and dominate this season
But three players who we thought would drop off are playing their best ball of their careers:
Blake, Sergio and Pryzbilla
That's one of the irreplaceable things about this team -- being able to run 2 REAL centers every night with 12 fouls to give crushes about 25 potential opponents right there, if they can be used to their fullest.
"Sergio is clearly the MJ of 3rd string point guards!" —Mortimer Pritchard
Can we all agree though that Nate is putting too much pressure on Oden?
He shouldn’t force the guy into the lineup like that.
You could just see it in Odens face, he looked stressed out
was trying to hard

Nah
Call it mental conditioning. Dude needs to get some mental toughness, and that’s not going to come unless he learns how to deal with it. And Aldridge needs to figure out how to play with someone who’s more aggressive (in some ways) than Pryz is.
LMA
Needs to stop playing like he’s in the WNBA. He should be coming out with an attitude of “yeah I’m better than you and I’m going to prove it”, instead of being a 6-11 240 forward who is attempting a REVERSE layup to avoid contact on a dunk.

Someone needs to teach him
If he’s going to be bricking jumpshots off the side of the basket, he needs to find other ways to score. An easy way to do that is to actually draw contact, LMA probably averages the least amount of free throws of any starting power forward in the league. I’m not saying he has to be excellent, or like Roy in this regard, but at least mildly competent.

nah, i trust nate
this may be what oden needs. they expect big things and this is one way to get the kinks out.
that's horrible reasoning
You don’t rush a 20 year old Center with potential that just came off an injury to work the “kinks” out
"It's as Ann as the nose on plain's face."
oh don't get me wrong
i’m just speculating on the reasoning. see, if i was coach and that’s all i was basing his start on, then perhaps it would be suspect. but i’m not gonna be one of these fans who has limited access to the team and assumes he knows better than the coach.
i’m just saying i trust nate. i can conclude that he’s wrong off of my own biases or limited info, but that would be silly, cuz what do i know (or you, or anyone else on here really.)
He's not a five year old
He better get used to dealing with stress, if he can’t be focused against Spencer Hawes and Brad Miller then I hate to see what’s going to happen in a playoff game against Yao, or Amare, or Howard.

I think an underrated factor in our record has been the turnovers we have been forcing. I don't need to look at the stats to see that we are playing the passing lanes better and taking more chances on D
although our FG defense is really bad
I thought Sergio did a better job
on Udrih than Blake did.
This was the kind of game the Blazers would have lost last year. They played lousy, but they stayed and scrapped, The steals are real run stoppers. They’ve saved their butts a couple of times this year and that’s mostly Sergio and Rudy. Sergio is making a case for more minutes I think.
but so is Blake
although i was pissed he didn’t hit Rudy for the alleyoop that you could tell Rudy wanted so bad running baseline in the 3rd
Maybe wouldn't say more minutes
But Sergio played great defense tonight, a lot of deflections and steals.

Chill Guys
Treat this game as the last game of a long road trip. So we were sluggish. Big deal …they have been practically on the road for the whole season so far.
anybody think that roy should just attack the double team instead of passing out?
they usually bring a big to pressure roy to get the ball out of his hands. i have a hard time believing roy couldn’t just cut around the double and then have some better options.
right now he forces a pass out to the closest man and we really don’t seem to be able to capitalize on swinging the ball.
i guess he should pass out then tho. nate needs to get these guys ready to exploit the mismatches that come from the double. right now it feels like we’d have more success with roy attacking 2 players up top than the rest of the team playing 4 on 3.
just got back from the game
