Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Gameday Open Thread -- Sacramento Kings

I'm heading out the door for the Rose Garden. It feels great to write that again.  In just a few short hours there will be professional basketball here in Portland.  Hooray.

Will there be a loud, awkward confrontation between Spencer Hawes and myself as we point/counterpoint about destiny and fate? No, there will not (knock on wood). But there will be a matchup pitting the Oden-starting Blazers versus the Purple-donning Kings.

And there will be a first.

And I do believe it is Spencer Hawes’ destiny to be Ostertagged throughout Greg Oden’s career. I’m sorry, it’s not a glamorous job but someones got to do it.

So I am going to the game tonight

Anybody have any thoughts on if this will be as big a win as the last game against the Kings?
What do you think playing a team twice in a short time means?

by twggyy on Nov 24, 2008 4:30 PM PST reply actions

King's probably won't want to be steamrolled the second time in a row

Plus the last game both teams were on the second game of a back-to-back, one solid run won’t destroy them like it did the last game.

i beleive

the kings will be hungry for a win but tired from the lake show last name. hawes is gonna get dunked on all night. he might even get some backboard shards on him wen greg brings it down. blazers by a close margin.

by rippedcity on Nov 24, 2008 4:32 PM PST reply actions

should be a good game

but im tipping the blazers by 10, scores might be close at the half, but the blazers have too many weapons for the kings.

kings will be much better with a full lineup, for now blazers will remain undefeated at home

Gets away with a lot of crazy flops, although I doubt that will be the case at home, against Oden.

The key to successful flopping

Is wild floppy hair!

Verajao and Moore got it down. It creates more movement that catches the ref’s eye, and makes any flop all the more dramatic.

Joel needs to grow his hair out and get it jherri curled, so it just flops all over the place and he starts getting calls from the racist refs.

outlaw looks great

when he takes it to the basket, his superior athleticism really helps and can put the opposing big men in foul trouble, if we can get brad miller in foul trouble early, it will almost certainly guarantee us a win, considering he is probably their best passer, and the kings best perimeter shooter.

Outlaw

can be a fine driving force to draw fouls. unfortunately he tends to not go up strond and do crappy fadeaways instead. if he had the heart of a lion he would have alot more dunks and FT ATTEMPTS than he does

possibly the issue is

we have an excess of finesse players, oden is our only really power player in the paint, although joel is doing an excellent job converting opportunities! if outlaw and LMA were more aggressive in the paint some positives could come from that

i love it

i love the move for oden and the team. finally, some continuity can be made with roy and lamarcus.

i really want one time for him him to absolutely destroy spencer hawes. im really surprised with how well hawes is playing, but come on GO. ur bigger, ur better, ur a beast. let all the aggression out on him for one thunderous earth shaking dunk. then, after that, work on your post moves and pivot work. pass out of the post as masterfully as u always do. most importantly, let ur presence be known on the Defensive end. ur help D is most essential for this team’s eventual success. ur best self doesnt have to show any time soon, but as long as progress is made and seen, this season should be very nice.

Another win at home would be great

And it’s a game we SHOULD win and there will be hand wringing if we don’t, but I agree that the Kings shouldn’t be taken lightly. Like Dave points out, they can score, and that gives them a chance in any game.

If our defense is still poor and we can’t buy a bucket, it could be a surprising night for us.

We gotta make sure it is BRANG!

Blocks only count if your team wins

New rule, the NBA just started it this year.

Sadly, the block existed in the game itself, but once the game is over and the Kings lost, any block(s) Hawes had on Oden don’t technically count.

Hey, I don’t make the rules, don’t look at me.

he is too slow

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

It's also an experience thing

Joel knows where to go, and when. He’s just not able to finish as well.

We are pretty soft.

Ugly first half and we have the lead.

ugly first half

our TOs have been way way too high the last few games, especially when Oden has been in. Przy’s plus minus is (yet again) much better than Greg’s. Right now, we are just not very good when Greg is in. This is not all (or even mostly) Greg’s fault… but it’s a concern. We just become a turnover machine when Greg is in… and he isn’t really making an impact on D either.

And Aldridge’s jumper looks hideous.

I voted Yes

to start only cuz Nate knows what is he doing. But it looks like they cant get him the ball. And he cant make him-self available, cuz quicker players front him.

I'm not sure.

He looks… okay. Not great. I think the bigger problem is that the other starters don’t know how to play with him yet. With practice and a couple more games under their belts, it should straighten out.

On that note, this game has proven that Travis CANNOT play with the starters. It’s just a bad idea.
