Martell's Return: Who Takes his DNP-I Place? (Poll)

Everytime I look at the box score after a Blazer game, a little question always hits me.  So far this season, we have 3 mainstays at the DNP -- INACTIVE List: Shavlik, RLEC and Martell.  When Martell returns, what player currently active goes to the DNP-I? I narrowed it down to Ike, Batum and Bayless.

(After around a year and a half on BE, this is my first poll...so please be gentle.  I know its a little bit simplistic)

Ike

Although it would make the roster more balanced to put Batum.

—-Starters—-
C: Przybilla
PF: Aldridge
SF: Webster
SG: Roy
PG: Blake
—-Bench—-
C: Oden
SG: Fernandez
SF: Outlaw
PG: Rodriguez
PF: Frye
G: Bayless
SF: Batum
—-IR—-
PF: Diogu
PF: Randolph
PF: RLEC

Notice a trend on the IR? And only 2 real bigs on the bench. It’s possible they keep Diogu on the active roster and sit Bayless.

na, (maybe but...)

na, If it comes down to needing ike, I’d guess the games already lost,….but on the oppisite end, there’s no need to let ike get any burn if we’re killing the other team, but a whole lot of reason to play bayless in either case.

By the way

On my NBA 2k9 I’ve been starting Roy at point and putting Fernandez at SG, Webster at SF. It actually does work, although once or twice I’ve had to put Blake at SG and Rodriguez at point, but for very short stints.

I play live with:

1. Roy
2. Rudy
3 Batum (since Webster’s out)
4. Aldridge
5. Oden

I smash on people online and can beat the computer on superstar with ease. Roy at the 1now!

Outlaw becomes a PF

simple as that.

By the time Webster comes back…

PG – Blake / Rodriguez
SG – Roy / Fernandez / Bayless
SF – Webster / Batum
PF – Aldridge / Outlaw / Frye
C – Oden / Przybilla

Plenty flexibility all the way around… Bayless is PG/SG, Frye is PF/C.

by as11osu on Nov 22, 2008 4:47 PM PST reply actions

agreed.

When you look at those lineups, it may be best to have Webster off the bench. Really stacks our bench, and doesn’t hurt our starters.

by rmcdougall on Nov 22, 2008 8:14 PM PST up reply actions

WHOOPS. NO, there is one mistake...

Rex is the 3rd PG, not the 3rd SG — although Nate will play him wherever there’s an opening in blowout wins and losses. But still, he’s a 1, not a 2, due to size.

why would they have to deactivate someone?

by 50backflips on Nov 22, 2008 5:08 PM PST reply actions

I'm thinking Bayless

Batum is getting valuable minutes and contributing. Ike stays active out of need for an inside presence in the frontcourt in case of foul trouble.

If Blake and Sergio struggle or get into foul trouble, Roy and even Rudy can play the point well enough to cover the position. If Oden and Joel go down with fouls, it really limits Nates options. He has to go small with some combination of Outlaw, Aldridge, and Frye. Ike is a bigger body that he can throw out there to grab some boards and keep a low post player in check.

I get that logic...

and it looks like most agree with you. I just think Nate might choose size and interior fouls over getting Bayless garbage time in blow outs.

bad idea to send Bayless to the D-league

Bayless doesn’t need to be in another summer league or Arizona situation where he’s the most athletic person on the court and go off on scoring binges. Sure it would help his confidence, but I’m guessing confidence is not the biggest issue with Bayless. ..

Bayless is learning by being at the end of the bench. The most important thing for Bayless is learning to play the game, the way Nate wants it played. Batum might be a better candidate for D-league as he could use a lot more playing time to develop his shot and offensive game.

Bayless will not go to the D-league.

"Sergio is clearly the MJ of 3rd string point guards!" —Mortimer Pritchard

by timbo on Nov 23, 2008 9:18 AM PST up reply actions

Why not?

The D-League is not Summer League. These are real teams that run actual plays. Bayless is not ready to be a point guard right now and he probably isn’t even ready to be a combo guard yet. He is just a shooting guard and he isn’t going to get much time behind Roy and Rudy as a shooting guard. Time spent playing point in the D-Leaue is going to be much better for his development than sitting on the bench. If it is really that important to him, then I’m sure they can get him one of those chairs and he can sit on it for two hours at home every night.

by zach2046 on Nov 23, 2008 9:34 AM PST up reply actions

Also, usually the D-League teams run very similar offensive and defensive sets to the teams that they are associated with

Idaho is associated with us and Toronto. I don’t think Toronto is playing that different from us, mostly using half court sets involving Bosh. So he could learn something about running a team in the d-league, even if he scores more than he would here.

as11osu is correct

Outlaw starts taking most of the backup PF minutes, Frye gets relegated to spot minutes, and Dee-Ogg-Ooo gets to wear a suit and tie instead of a uniform. He’ll probably look kind of silly in his Sunday best.

We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

by MT Suit on Nov 22, 2008 10:17 PM PST reply actions

For whom?

Usually you don’t trade a player (or more) just to clear a roster spot….

Unless we trade to someone with cap space, you can’t just trade for a draft pick, either.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

by jscot on Nov 23, 2008 12:01 AM PST up reply actions

Diogu will move to the inactive roster.

Reason?

Frye and Outlaw give us two players to back up LMA at PF, just as Batum/Fernandez/Outlaw give us players to back up Webster.

Diogu simply won’t get many minutes due to the fact that once Webster is back we’ll see Outlaw being pushed to the back up PF slot if he is to get the minutes he wants.

Frye, in turn, gives us both time at PF and can, if necessary, play some minutes behind Oden and Pryz.

We really don’t have any need for another PF on the active roster.

by Eben Calder on Nov 23, 2008 9:42 AM PST reply actions

More than likely it will be Ike

But I wouldn’t be surprised to see Batum sent to Idaho so he can continue to play and grow before coming back to the team and becoming the backup SF, sending Ike to the IL.

But I still stick with it being Ike.

After reading a few comments

I wouldn’t mind it if they sent down Bayless and told him to play point guard and concentrate on assists. Who cares if it messes up a D League team’s record?

They would probably win with him doing that because he’d be the best player in the entire league. He could stink it up for three quarters then be a ball hog in the forth quarter.

See, I just talked myself into it more. It would give him a chance to work on his point guard skills while also honing his attack the basket skills.

I still don’t think he’ll ever go down to the D-League and I’m not sure why this is a reply to OiR.

But if i have it right Ike in a suit or JB in Idaho could be activated for the next game if somebody got hurt

Nic to D League

is fine withe me. He’s got plenty to learn, for sure.

by kickbrass on Nov 23, 2008 10:02 PM PST up reply actions

Nic should stay

as a starter until Martell gets his groove back. I’m really excited by Nic’s development so far. He’s hitting from range from the few shots he takes and stays infront of his man on the other end. Sending him to D-league will bring him back to square one.

But more importantly, Nic fills a team need of ours – a capable wing defender who compliments our starting unit on offense by playing off the ball and spreading the floor with his outside shooting. Even as a rookie I think Nic’s lateral quickness on D is already ahead of Martell and Trout. To me his skillset is more important than anything Shavlik brings to the floor. Be nice to keep Rex, but maybe he’d gain more from playing huge minutes for Idaho than garbage minutes fro Portland? Sergio kinda makes Bayless reduntant at this stage.

It'll be Ike

Travis Outlaw is an alien, but in a good way.

by Clevelander among roses on Nov 23, 2008 11:24 PM PST reply actions

Batum is our future at the 3. He runs the floor

as well as Martell , has more of a disrupting influence on defense and rebounds better. Marftel has become an unnecessary piece. He has a pretty shot but has never consistently shot the 3 well plus we already have our long ball shooters now in Blake, Rudy, Travis and Roy.

Martell’s place should be on the bench until he can be traded. Will Nate do that though? Probably not. He’ll slight the rookie instead I’d guess..

by TwoDeep on Nov 24, 2008 1:45 AM PST reply actions

Last season Martell hit the three pretty consistent from everywhere around the arc at a similar rate to Blake

Unlike Travis, whose real hot spots are the corners and otherwise is not a typical catch-and-shooter. Ironically he is better when in motion, so he is somewhat more valuable late in the game to create his own shots (also because he is taller and has great elevation). If we want a shooter on the wing to spread the floor for the first unit, that’s Martell. I agree that Nic could eventually be just as good on offense, and already looks like the more active defender and “runner” off the ball. As of now, Martell will be the starter once he returns to form. Deciding who to move in a potential trade situation will be as tough as ever. I would say it goes a bit like this:

Martell:
+ Shooting (especially catch and shoot)
+ Youth (relative to Travis)
+ Athletic abilities/quickness
- Never had more than 30 points (despite over 20 in a quarter)
- Ball handling overall (tends to lose control)
- Defensive consistency

Travis:
+ Ability to play two positions
+ Creating his own shot
+ Athletic abilities
- Catch and shoot
- Movement without the ball
- Ball handling with left hand
- Defense (ability is there, but not stable)

Nicolas:
+ Youth (relative to both guys)
+ Defensive tools and effort
+ Offensive rebounding
+ Shot looking good, starting to develop
- Inexperience, especially in late-game situations
- Consistency (disappears in some games)

by Norsktroll on Nov 24, 2008 4:40 AM PST up reply actions   1 recs

That's a good shakedown of those 3.

I suppose if our single minded priority was to build for a future championship a couple years from now, we’d have to make sure we continued given Batum time on the floor.
But of course any coach is under pressure to win some games now as well, so Nate will do what he thinks will help us win today.

I like Martell well enough but I’ll be almost sorry to see him coming back. Batum I feel, is going to be a gem. In no way can I envision KP trading this kid …. not even to get Steve Nash. Nic’s future is just to bright. Hope I’m right!
