Are you excited yet?

You should be.

When can we start talking solidly about the Blazers making the playoffs without being called a homer?  If we beat Phoenix tomorrow night, it's time to start.  The operative word for us now is: IMPROVED.

If you're trying to break down a statistical analysis of the Blazers comparing to the rest of the NBA, you really have to separate our recent play from our early season play.  Even if you take into accout that we will not blow out opponents like we have in the last two games, we still are showing great improvement.  This shows in areas like our offensive scheme.  We are really starting to see some offensive flow and cohesiveness.  Early in the season it was hard to watch players playing as individuals, and hoisting up bad shots early in the shot clock with nobody near the hoop to rebound.  It was hard to see one guy move with the ball and the other 4 standing around.  It was hard to watch us poorly trying to be an outside shooting club.

We can brush aside those memories of the early season.  We now see our guys showing great discipline, running quality offensive sets.  Our outside shots are more timely, and usually after we have broken the defense down.  It's great to see our guys actually moving without the ball.  We have a great Center coming off the bench.  Yeah, how much longer will we see Oden as our backup center?  Honestly, it doesn't seem as urgent anymore for Oden to start.  Also, it doesn't seem like Brandon has to carry the team on his back.

Sure, much room for improvement still.  But I think it's time to start giving credit where it's due.  We have a good team!  Also, we have a good coach.  If we were still seeing the same problems we were early on, we would be justified to feel restless about Nate.  But to see such clear improvement in team oriented areas shows Nate has taken hold of our problem areas and corrected many of them.  Kudos!

What is yet to come?  Now is the time many will be tempted to make sweeping predictions about how far we will make it in the playoffs, and so on.  --- Steady ---  Let's just take some time to bask in the glory of what we are seeing right now.  "It's a great day to be a Blazer" as Brian Wheeler would say.  Get excited.  Hold your head high.  Remember a few years ago when we had many reasons to be embarrased by our situation, and realize days like today are a call to cellebrate, and get excited.  Someday we will have our memories to look back at.  Let this day be one which brings you smiles for many days to come.  This week and last week, were when it really began to come together.

yes I am the FIRST to be excited!

I am so excited I could run out and kiss the first person I see.

dude I didn't post this thread

and we have every right to feel excited before, during and also after the Suns game. Right now it’s after the Suns game and by golly I’m still excited.

I ain’t gonna kiss hobobob though. he probably has beard stubble and that is not pleasant. I’ll never understand how chicks can kiss dudes with beard stubble. Isn’t it all scratchy?

Hey, I was first.

Just kidding. I think all of Portland collectively stood and cheered together.

It’s a great day! Save the newspaper clippings!

Allow yourself to imagine where we are heading.

If you’re like me, just stare at the NBA standings and grin.

But I am so glad to see the blazers blow teams out again

It’s just what they’ve needed. It was so hard watching them play down to teams that they should be destroying.

Exactly.

Also it’s good to see them play with their own identity. Previously, it seemed like we tried to customize our style to what the other team did. Now we are the ones setting the tone for the game!

The players certainly look excited.

You can see a collective glow from the whole team. Even the coaches.

To use a trite word, “Mojo”.

We are starting to show momentum, and perhaps swagger. It feels like we could beat anybody. Sure we lost to Phoenix earlier this season, but we are a different team now. We can beat them tomorrow night!

by TheDynastyBegins on Nov 21, 2008 10:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

When's the last time YOU were this excited?

For me,

Not since Terry Porter and Clyde Drexler. The Brian Grant days were good, but right now seems even more exciting. This team seems like it really could go somewhere.

As a side note: I’m probably one of the luckiest Blazer fans. When I was a kid, my first exposure to the Blazers was listening on a little radio with headphones, after I was supposed to be asleep in bed. The first game I ever listened to was Bill Schonley calling the game, and it was the first game of a 10 game winning streak during the Drexler/Porter era. Immediate addiction!

by GoBlazersWIN on Nov 21, 2008 10:42 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I have never been this excited for this team, other than when we got that #1 pick

Also, I have rarely (if ever) seen our team outscore an opponent for 4 straight quarters in games. We have done so for 8 straight quarters now.

Kwame and Darko - Grizz '07-'08. The rebuilding is complete.

I remember the Drexler/Porter teams doing things like that. It feels like that kind of momentum agian.

Mine was in the Memorial Collesium

I was 5, and my dad got us tickets near the top. He bought me a chocolate malt which I knocked over with my foot when I stood up to cheer. My dad caught it before it fell down 3 flights of stairs. Nights like that were a real treat. Our family budget was tight at the time. Never let Blazers games stop being a family atmoshpere!

I want them to stay here with us dude.

And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

I am soo super duper excited :)

I cant explain. I <3 this team. Travis’ defense looks better every game (thank GAWD) but he still does things on the offensive side predictably, one thing at a time though. I love how Batum is starting the game w/ a 3 . His form is inproving, he looks much better shooting and he is gonna be w/ this team for some time (that in and of itself makes me exstatic {sp?}) . Brandon and LMA were on point to night. Offensively and defensively , which makes me happy b/c when Oden, LMA , Roy AND Rudy are hitting shots add Outlaw and Blake, HOLY CRAPOLA thats a super good team!

I love being a Blazer fan!
Lets get those Suns tomorrow

I got enough of these Suns

I dont want to see them anymore.

Blazers never can beat them no matter what. I wanted Oden to take everything away from Shaq. But he got posterized by Shaq. I dont want Shaq to retire and then Oden takes over. I want Oden to grab it away from The Disel.

Sometimes Im exited about this team, sometimes they look so….. I dont know how to even say it, but its the games like the Suns and Warriors.

I am excited as well

FINALLY our point differential matches our record, so no one can use that against us anymore!

I read somewhere that the NBA was going to do away with wins and losses, and just choose the champions with the point differential stat. THAT’S WHY IMPROVING IN THIS AREA IS SO IMPORTANT.

The best part about right now, is that we’re only going to get better. A lotta lotta LOT better. This is the worst version of Oden we will see for 15 years, LMA will become consistent like before and add veteran guile, Roy will just get more awesomer and respected by the refs, Rudy is only 23 and playing like a 5 year vet… we’re made in the shade.

I also believe that Oden will be perhaps THE best center in the NBA in the near future… like, next season or the season after that. He is so raw right now (relatively), yet so effective. His conditioning has improved vastly already, and once it is tippity toppity he will be impossible to guard. I love his FT shooting (will help IMMENSELY in close games, and to get him easy buckets), and his passing is years beyond most young centers (take a peek at Howard’s turnovers and passing abilities to see how good Oden already is).

His awkwardness will fade away and the learn-on-the-job-yet-still-win will reap us dividends that will make all of our dreams come true.

We shot well against Sacramento, but really didn’t play all THAT well. We just got too many weapons, too many good players— and we play like we expect to win. Making the adjustment from a team that HOPES to win each night, to a team that KNOWs they are going to win is a big one, and we need to maintain that to make the playoffs.

The west ain’t easy, and the schedule handed to us is as tough as it gets, and we’re winning and developing as a team very nicely. I am extremely excited for this season, and I know we’re going to be the top team in the NBA in the near future. I don’t say that lightly, either— we got a lot of a lot and it all fits and wants to be here. The normal ‘how-do-we-keep-’em-all’ ain’t gonna apply for this squadron of basketeers.

NO I SWEAR IT IS TRUE

The NBA decided that wins and losses are too vague of a way to determine who are the best teams, and that point differential removes the shades of grey from the age old question of “who has a better record?”. Point differential is the now, and the future now!

Nah phoo, I jus’ playin’. Point differential is a good stat to see how effectively a team is winning, even though I think Roy’s clutchness gets overlooked in that sort of stat— I am glad our two blowouts have offset the horrible Lakers game and then some, and (on the stat sheet at least) our record looks more “real”, and not the benefit of random luck (though I’d argue Roy’s clutchness ain’t luck, but clutchness).

It ain’t a slam at the stat, maybe just a silly joke about the importance of it… though I do think it’s sorta important, so I’m not sure what my point of view is. Just sillified silliness, sillily sillied for you sillies.

Suns game, etc. will start to give us a feel, but still...

A couple of blowouts (as opposed to a couple of eeked out W’s where we play to our competition) makes a bit of a case that we might be legit. My favorite quote of the night:

“These guys [Portland] are pretty good, I mean they played great,” Kings coach Reggie Theus said. “They shot lights out. I can’t even dissect the game tonight because I think we played OK and they just played great.”

We’ve heard a lot of praise from opposing coaches about our “potential” and how we’ve got a good thing going, but to leave a coach analytically speechless…pretty fun. That’s the sort of things great teams do.

gotta be excited

about the Blazers play so far.

I’m still concerned about the West, specificially Denver’s excellent play since getting Billups, SA’s holding on without Manu and Tony and Utah winning without DWill.

Portland is playing well enough to make the playoffs right now— no question about it— but there are 8 teams ready to pounce if they fall off.

That said, you have to be happy with the results so far.

Nice article! Excited and Ecstatic!!

We still have Martell to add to the mix!!! We have so many options that someone….is bound to be on…We just need to play as a team with the same collective goal. This is kinda like a high school garage band getting together and then playing some small gigs and then opening up for U2..soon we will be tour the planet as the headliner! However, we gotta keep together or it can get derailed. I trust in Nate and KP..and Paul’s checkbook :)

Blazer Power

While Portland tactical forces may not be immediately visible to the average non Blazer fanatic NBA fan, they are a potent deterrent to potential adversaries since such forces can arrive quickly and remain indefinitely during the duration of a game. Routine forward deployment provides coach Nate with “on-call bench presence” to semingly any game and furnishes the capability to project this power and show credible resolve without provoking animosity. This presence also reminds potential adversaries of Blazer capability and resolve to enforce its will. In this regard, the length and still developing sheer raw power provide the Portland Trailblazers with unparalleled capability and potential.

There’s a new fleet that has set out in in the 7 seas of the NBA. Modern, disciplined and fully armed. Definately ready to get battle tested. And its headed for deep water

I know that we have a ton of road games but these guys are getting scary good and I am giddy like a school girl. We have a lot of fun ahead! The new and improved Blazers who are proving to be a good road team, too. So many weapons!!! Go Blazers!

Yes!

I feel that we wil have a big winning streak before the season is over. That’s pretty exciting when you consider we are on pace for 50 wins right now. If we just kept this pace, that would be amazing enough. You add in a winning streak of 8 or 10 games, and we could be on pace for….. something great!

To say the least. How could any Blazer fan not be excited. I know it’s still early but this team is starting to come around and find their identity. They’re playing some great ball and starting to put the trash teams to sleep. Stay out of foul trouble tonight and crash the boards and they can come out with a great win. GO BLAZERS!!!!

This was going to be my post this morning...

Sure the wins were not against the better teams in the league but I can’t remember the last time we won a game going away where the other team didn’t make a huge run and at least make it close in the fourth quarter. Fun stuff. I think these wins will go along way in teaching them how to close out a game after getting a big lead.

PTB Liberation Day - 2/10/04

by tssbro on Nov 22, 2008 9:57 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Exactly

This “pace” and style of closing out opponents could be habit forming. Like anything else. More than anything we are learning to play 4 quarters of good basketball. Keeping our foot on the gas pedal. Now, against tougher opponents it will not translate into blowout wins, but it will translate into wins.

by GoBlazersWIN on Nov 22, 2008 11:03 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Another important stat

In looking at other teams home records around the league, I noticed we are tied with Detroit for the fewest home games played to date (4) of which we are 4-0. We have seen much improvement in how we play on the road but we are still a different and much more energetic team at home. This bodes well for the coming months when we begin to get more home games.

“Both teams played hard!”…that Rasheed interview still cracks me up..good ridance though!

by PHXBlazerFan on Nov 22, 2008 10:20 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

I mentioned this elsewhere but last year we won 67% at home and 33% of our games on the road. So far this year we’re 100% at home and 44% on the road. Obviously that home number will drop but I think this team can manage to win 75-80% at home and somewhere close to 50% on the road. That’s a playoff team.

by ericande on Nov 22, 2008 10:25 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Blazers are playing every bit as well as you could have expected

Other than the L%kers game we’ve had a chance in every game against the good teams, when we lose it’s close. We’ve taken care of the bad teams and really don’t have a bad loss on the season. We’re undefeated at home and playing pretty darn well on the road. The Blazers are flat out playing like a team that will go to the playoffs this year. The question isn’t will they go to the playoffs, it’s whether they’ll earn the right between now and then to be considered among the elite teams in the league. They’re not there yet but with Martell coming back, Oden learning to play in the league and the team learning to play with Oden (Aldridge!) this team could not just go to the playoffs but look at getting past the first round. I don’t think there’s going to be a team in the playoffs that would be excited about drawing the Blazers in the first round. We’re going to force some tough matchups and when we’re hitting shots, we can score in bunches like never before. The biggest worry right now is still the number of points we get from the outside. This killed us last year when our shots weren’t falling.

I think Nate gets too my criticism here and deserves a ton of credit for getting this team to play together like this so early in the year with some pretty big changes to the lineup. I also think he does an excellent job showing the team what they can learn in losses.

I rambled a bit here but I’m a bit excited. My Huskies suck, Mariners suck, Seahawks suck and the furnace in my house just broke. I need the Blazers to win 50 games this year!

by ericande on Nov 22, 2008 10:22 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I am excited too.

It is sounding good. I know I made a good move down I 5 for a new team to root for. Hard not to be excited. I won’t listen to the people who bug me with Jail Blazers garbage. Hell with them, I’m excited. Brandon is great and not a one man show. Great coach in Nate, got my Blazers hat with me today, and Blazers stuff is on my Christmas list. GO BLAZERS! I agree the Mariners suck, I wrote the Seahawks off for this year, dumping the Sonics once they left for OKC for the Blazers was a good move. Again hell with the haters, GO BLAZERS! Brandon is the man.

by CanadianBlazerfan on Nov 22, 2008 3:18 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

How about now? Still excited?

I am. We hung there despite the fact that Phoenix was desperate for a win, we weren’t, and we couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn all night. And you knew that Shaq and Amare were geared up to put Oden (who is not ready yet) in his place. Brandon can’t will this team to a victory every night.

I don’t think we’ll get out of the first round this year because the top four in the West are all championship-caliber teams… but I think we are setting up very nicely for the near future.

MLB2PDX!!! (someday...)

Yes!

some nights the shots aren’t falling. We had good looks, and I think if we hit a couple of those like normal, it’s a different ballgame. G.O. needs some games like these, he’s got to pay his dues, but his time is coming. Martell will be back soon and we’ll be even stronger IMO. It’s all good in Blazerland!
