Z-BO Traded to Clippers
Zach and Mardy Collins for Mobley and Tim Thomas.
Knicks are going to have tons of CAP space now in two summers as pretty much every contract they have except for Eddy Curry will expire. Should make the race for LeBron that much more interesting and if I'm a Cavs fan, I'm getting real nervous.
This will definitely make the Clippers much better, which is unfortunate for us, but they're still the Clippers, so I'm not worried.

Wow...
Seems like a great trade for both teams. Mobley will be a killer in New York.

How is this a great trade for the Clips?
3 of their 4 highest paid player (Z-Bo, Kaman and Camby) can’t play on the court at the same time. And really, Z-Bo and Baron on the same team, this is a good idea?
I really have no clue what the Clips were thinking here… but again, this is why they are the Clippers.
by diskord on Nov 21, 2008 2:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
They had to do something
They were locked into a ton of money now with Baron and had no front court scoring. Pairing Z-BO with Kaman and Camby is pretty good in my opinion — 3 great rebounder’s, a great post scorer, and two of the best shot blockers in the league, definitely made them better.
by LOOSH on Nov 21, 2008 2:28 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
My point is their money is tied up on guys who will be riding the pine.
Paying top flight money for a guy who has to split time with other players coming of the bench seems like a poor investment. Yes I know Ginobili makes good money as a 6th man, but he plays starters minutes.
I guess there are 96 total minutes between PF and C, so I suppose 32, 32, and 32 for each of them isn’t horrible… but I would imagine there is another move planned, either Kaman or Camby at some point.

Plus, considering their collective histories of injuries and illness, it’s a good hedge against the next time that one of them inevitably goes down.

For the time being, Mike Dunleavy, Sr. should ...
share playing time at the two frontline positions. Chris Kaman, Zach Randolph, and Marcus Camby can each receiving roughly 32 minutes per game, which you mentioned in your post.

Donnie Walsh
Greatest. GM. Ever.
With all due respect to Pritchard, anyone who could unload Zach, Crawford and their contracts at this stage of their careers is either hypnotist, con man, mafia don or all of the above. The whole league now recognizes both players as overpriced chemistry killers and there’s no longer an Isiah around who will helpfully accept another team’s garbage. That Walsh got Dunleavy and Mullin to sign off on those deals is nothing short of a Festivus miracle.
I love Donnie Walsh!

by TheGreatDane17 on Nov 21, 2008 6:12 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
If your definition
of “quality” is a high volume, low percentage jumpshoter who is allergic to playing defense then, yes, Crawford is Grade A, US Government certified.
But you’re correct that he’ll be right at home on the Warriors, tho’. Don’t know how many wins it might mean. But if nothing else, Spalding’s share price should go through the roof as Golden State is going to need at least 9-10 balls on the floor at any given time in order to keep all those shooters happy.

by ratbastird on Nov 21, 2008 9:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
What Pritchard did was impressive
but the magnitude of what he pulled off with his Z-Bo deal is diminished by the fact that his trading partner was a half-wit.
KP was hardly the first NBA GM to get the better of Isiah. Even Paxson cleaned his clock in the Curry deal. With Isiah out of the league, I though there would be no GM left who would even consider dealing for two mega-blck holes with toxic contracts. That Walsh was somehow able to peddle Crawford to Mullin (who actually has a pretty good track record as GM) and Zach to Dunleavy (new to the game, but strikes me as a fairly bright guy) in the same day has to rank among the greatest one-day accomplishments ever by an NBA GM.

add Bosh
According to inside stuff from Jalen Rose at ESPN…the move was made to make room to get James and Bosh in 2010…Don’t know how anyone could project the future that well, but they were unloading contracts for sure….and appear to be targeting 2010 to acquire some marquee talent
by 67 on Nov 22, 2008 9:04 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
things to watch
most of the teams will want to extend contracts to these players in 2009 or sooner …If they offer extended contracts, it means they are serious about keeping them……So the players that don’t sign extensions, will be left in the player pool and probably good bets for the big time cities, like NY( or for a championship contender)…..So you have to think Bosh and James are the most likely candidates to actually become free agents…..Also there will be older players not signed as well……
unless Portland thinks they could get Wade , I just don’t seeing them waiting until 2010 and would more likely go for the 2009 class(will depend on what they perceive as missing from the current squad to get to the next level)….But I also don’t see them jumping into it without using KP’s many angles for acquiring talent….They have set themselves up in a great position of flexibility and have a good enough team to help carry them through it…..(but it may be time to move on from potential and good young average players that have filled up 65 % of the roster)

I don't know what the Clippers are thinking
This move just doesn’t seem to make much sense for LAC. It probably makes them slightly better this year, but they still aren’t going to make the playoffs so getting a little better really just means decreasing their chances of winning the lottery. If you also factor in the additional salary that the Clippers are adding, it just seems like this move is ensuring that the Clippers will remain a below-average team for a long time.

It's not like they gave up anything of value
Mobley and Thomas ain’t exactly good players. Camby will be off the books next year, so the Clippers should have a little wiggle room the last year of Zach’s contract.

on coaching Z-Bo in Portland … was he really regretting that?? I can’t believe he wants him on the team.
The Clippers appear to be the new Knicks … before the Knicks were the new Clippers. Desperately taking on unwanted contracts to try and put talent on the floor … condemning themselves to mediocrity in the future. Hoping to get another low draft pick which they will inevitably mess up. I’m glad we’re not clippers fans.

It seemed that Jamal and Z-Bo were their two featured players in the early part of this year. Does anyone else feel like they were being shopped?
So nows do they start playing Marbury and Curry and get their stock up so they can be traded too? That would be amazing if they could pull that off.

Not likely to Win
KP and Walsh both agreed on one thing – Zach is not going to make you a winner. His 20/10 is not, as a result, an accurate reflection of his contribution. Any other PF who had such numbers would not be routinely shopped – after all, there’s only a handful that can put up those stats. The bottom line is that he doesn’t pass and doesn’t defend. if he did, then cap space would not get you that kind of player in 2010, and he would’ve been kept.
From where I sit, this isn’t going to make the Clippers a winner. The Clippers are now a re-manufactured team thrown together using pieces that have little relation to a system or a coaching philosophy. And they’re not starting like KP did, or as Walsh intends to do, which is to shovel the crap out the door and rebuild with the draft and proven players that can fit into a system that will produce wins.
After all, just what system is it that the Clippers are building that Zach fits into?
