Colin Cowherd on Greg Oden

This morning I heard Colin Cowherd say on ESPN radio that he received a lot of email from Blazer fans about Oden. Cowherd told the fans to calm down. "It has only been three games. He may score 17 points a night, but that doesn't make him an offensive player... You can tell by watching him. I could tell by watching Wilt. Jabbar."

My reaction:

1. So three games of production is not enough to say positive things about Oden, but two games of no production is enough validation to Cowherd to say Oden will never be an offensive player? You can't have your cake and eat it too.

2. If Oden scores 17-20 a night, he will not be considered an offensive player? What would he be then? Only 30 players averaged 20 or more a game last year. I think 20 a night is an offensive threat, whether they are dunks or 30-foot shots. Blazer fans would be overjoyed with a guy who gets 17-13-4 every night for 15 years. You win championships with those numbers from your center.

3. Cowherd can tell what Oden, at age 20, will be at age 24? Or age 30? Cowherd could tell by watching Wilt and Jabbar at that age? Really? Cowherd watched a lot of Wilt at Kansas in 1952 when he was 20? Cowherd set the Tivo to watch Jabbar every weekend in 1968 at UCLA? We have no baseline here, because a center this good hasn't been under this much media and fan exposure in NBA history. There weren't videos of Akeem playing soccer in Nigeria at age 16 on Youtube.

If you just put aside emotion or agenda and just think logically, what is more likely to happen: That Oden has topped his potential now, at age 20, a few games into his career, or that he will only get better, more fluid, comfortable, and confident as he gets more playing time, his teammates and coaches figure out how to play with him, and he recovers from a surgery in which they drill holes in your knee bones?

I am going with the latter.

cowherd is a herd of cows

he also talks out of his hind end. so everything he says is excrement from a herd of cows.

I used to be an Oden skeptic but I have seen the light. Mea culpa.

We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

lame joke du jour...

Easterner (on cattle ranch): That’s a nice bunch of cows.

Cowboy: Not a “bunch,” a “herd.”

Easterner: Heard what?

Cowboy: Herd of cows!

Easterner: Sure I’ve heard of cows.

Cowboy: No, a cow “herd.”

Easterner: Listen, I don’t care what a cow heard, I’ve got no secrets from the cows.

I think Call In Cow Herd will climb on the bandwagon soon enough.

Our centers might be capable of producing 30pts, 20 boards, 5 blocks, 5 assists and a couple steals regularly.

30 and 20.

How crazy is that?

Perfect practice makes perfect.

I hate to say it...

But I can see his point to a degree.

I guess I look at it more this way…Oden is a defensive minded player who can also put up some points.

Take Oden vs Zach as an example. Say both put up 20-10.

Zach is an offensive player that mainly wants to score. He is very adept at getting his own shot, and has a variety of offensive skills. En route to putting up his 20 points, he will grab 10 boards, some of which are his own misses. Even though he rebounds well, I would never call him a defensive player. He doesn’t do the other things well.

Oden is almost the polar opposite. He can easily pull down 10 rebounds, and from that he will get some points on putbacks. He is skilled at many defensive skills, but I have not seen a very refined offensive game from him. His offensive game seems mainly to dunk or be fouled at this point.

Basically, even though the stats (on these 2 catagories) can be identical, the way they are achieved are vastly different. Zach is motivated by Offense, and Oden seems to be motivated by Defense. This is not to say that Oden can not become an great offensive player.

by Risk on Nov 20, 2008 4:07 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but he originally stated

that Oden’s offensive upside was Dampier, who he obviously outclasses.

Cowherd is making his statements seem less outlandish.

by Cablinasian on Nov 20, 2008 4:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yep

And he stole Simmons’ take in saying that sometimes you see a person in one game and can just tell.

At least Simmons said that he’s been wrong, and would like to be.

by Powder on Nov 20, 2008 7:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

So Oden

grabs a bunch of offensive rebounds for putbacks and this doesn’t make him a good offensive player?

by BRye on Nov 21, 2008 6:44 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well he is contradicting himself on that aspect

In the previous fanpost where he says that

“I saw Iverson/Hakeem in his 1st game and he had it”

and then he comes back and says:

“Well it has only been 3 games, not enough time to tell” and that is complete bullsh\te.

Somebody should email him that contradiction and tell him to be quiet.

The season is here.

That’s the oxymoron that makes Cowherd an absolute moron. So much for his yap about how Oden was going to be a bad player.

Calling CowHerd is a moron without any oxy(gen). Why no oxy(gen)?

Because he has his head so far up his kiester that he can’t get any air! Only Methane!

New names for a certain windbag

These are all too obvious, probably not original, and utterly puerile, but I’ve taken to referring to him as Colon Coward and Call Him Blowhard.

I’m still amazed (well, no, not really) that this “professional” sports commentator still cannot place G.O.‘s first few games in their proper context: He’s coming off MAJOR knee surgery, the kind that used to abruptly end careers (I believe Geoff Petrie could tell you all about that). Put M.J., Wilt, Magic, Bird, or anyone else in that same situation and their first impressions wouldn’t have been so superhuman.

Needless to say, I’m delighted that Greg has been proving this fool wrong every game since Cowherd opened his silly yap: G.O. has been averaging almost 15 and 10 in about 23 minutes. And that’s while he’s working his way back into shape! He’s already infinitely better at his job than Cowherd has ever been at his.

cowherd was born in 1964

how old was he when he saw early wilt chamberlin? minus-5?

and kareem, when he was still lew alcindor, was greg’s age when cowherd was maybe 6 years old at most.

wilt was already an old man, long past his big scoring years by then.

I amused at how emotional everyone is on this

His purpose of talk radio/show/whatever he is, is to provoke reaction. Obviously he’s doing that right now. He WANTS people to call in upset and disagree and everyone here responding and becoming upset by a man who watched one game is falling right into it.

If a two year old child calls me stupid, do you think I’m going to care? It’s a two year old child. It doesn’t KNOW anything. Neither does Cowherd.

These guys aren’t invested in teams. they make grand sweeping statements because they don’t care to look deeper AND they want to provoke.

Greg did look ugly. He didn’t have that “IT” in the first couple of games, that part was true. he is RAPIDLY getting “IT” though. That’s all rust. When it shakes off…. LOOK OUT!!!

For those making threats against him for stating his opinion, that’s not cool. We’re not gathered here to be a bunch of thugs and “rearranging his face” isn’t going to do anybody any good, it just makes you look crass.

Just let Greg Oden do the talking with his game. The old saying of “don’t talk about it, just do it”.

Greg Oden, where posters happen.

The best thing to do, is just ignore him

If you complain, you’re just feeding his ego. Look at Gavin, he’s the same way. Even if you call in to complain, at least your calling in. That’s all they care about.

Why give him any attention?

He knows nothing about basketball, he has no business talking about basketball, so he makes outlandish remarks to cover up his inability to talk about basketball.
