Today's Poll

Sorry there was no game report last night. I was in Seattle supporting the cause.

What a win though.  How sweet was it? Compare and contrast in the comments.

And, if you would, fill me in on your favorite underappreciated moments from last night.  I didn't get to watch as closely as I usually do and I haven't gone back to the TiVo tape yet.  Drop some knowledge bombs on my head this afternoon.  Please?

Knowlege Bomb Ahoy!

The Blazers played playoff basketball, and the Bulls played JV high school basketball.

by JordanLeDoux on Nov 20, 2008 2:08 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This blowout win was the biggest for me.

Especially after hearing some player interviews about what Nate wanted to see from this game. He ASKED for a blowout, and he got one. It’s good to see a win when we expected a win, in the style in which we expected to win.

More boring second halfs please!

I voted for the Bulls game

simply because it was the most complete win we have had in a long time. It was really nice to get a win where we didn’t have to be on the edge of our seats for the entire game. I just love a good blowout, and by the way I looked at Hollingers power ratings (which usually hate us because of our win tiny differental) and we went from 16th before the Bulls game to 5th today….what a system

Not only that,

on Hollinger’s playoff prediction system, we now have a 96% chance of making the playoffs, behind only phoenix and LA.

by DirtyFernandez on Nov 20, 2008 4:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The blowout is something we needed

Could care less about Hollinger…rarely read that stuff……the running of the Bulls came at a good time….We didn’t run our offense and it shows if we play a different style we can kick butt…it didn’t even need to be coached….I was so glad we didn’t run our offense, it is so boring, slow and predictable. This game was a true breath of fresh air and fun to watch…we had them on their heels all night long….
.Even if it turns into a sort of fluke and we go back to slow and methodical, it gives everyone the thought that it can be accomplished with a totally different approach….it was tough to tell whether we played good “D” ….Chicago looked pretty ragged, did a lot of one on one, and took some poor shots

Even my novice wife saw that

we weren’t running our sets. She found the loose and freewheeling style distracting (not kidding)

yes

it’s always perceived differently …I enjoyed it and I think the players did as well…it had to be a fun game for them…I saw a lot of smiles…..and my wife couldn’t figure out why I was grinning either….She told me I’ve never seen you watch a game and be that happy before……
I just love that style of play and have never been too fond of the half court offense….especially the way the Blazers run theirs….not enough imagination and very robotic…..give them structure in practice , but let them play the game…..The players need to have some flexibility and will make for a better team overall (IMO)
Nate is all about being in control and not turning the ball over……so he may have not liked the style either….( but I did see him smiling too) The team, the coaches and the fans needed a relaxing win like this…..

Last night was most satisfying...

But the buzzer beater was the best win. As joelor stated above, the team came out with a plan and executed like crazy.

But nothing can beat the amazingness that BRoy’s buzzer beating shot was.

The Rockets game is #1?

I mean I loved that ending, but really? That was the most exciting moment of the season. Bot not the most satisfying.

The Bulls game was the most satisfying, purely because they showed signs of their full potential and just knocked the team right off the court. If this team goes on to the playoffs, this will be the game everyone looks back at and says “They arrived, right there”.

Good call on the Orlando game as the third choice, Ben. Winning that game on the road was a huge moment for the team and a significant confidence-booster… it was noticeable in Miami afterward.

by Timmay! on Nov 20, 2008 2:27 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Orlando

1) Chicago is out because the Bulls rolled over when we got off to a fast start, and we really had a ton of matchups that skewed the contest in our favor anyway.

2) Houston was all luck. Those were great shots, of the head shaking variety, but when it was over I was like, what the heck am I supposed to make of that.

3) They were both at home.

I pick Orlando. That game was a quality opponent in their arena, and the way that the Blazers won was not the easy way, not the lucky way, but the best way to win on the road. Presumably they will win that way consistently in a few years. They stayed close, pulled ahead when it counted and put the game out of reach with some execution.

by Knobby on Nov 20, 2008 2:56 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Well I will admit that I dont believe in good luck. I understand how the scenario can shake out in either direction fairly easily

however, after the missed shot by McGrady and the rebound to Roy who runs it down and makes that beautiful turn around jumper was not luck, that is pure. basketball. skill. The perceived good fortune appears to happen when the Rockets in bound. The PTB cant really NOT double McGrady so they get it into man to man and Joel naturally takes Yao, who hits a beautiful jumper. If he isnt fouled , Brandon inbounds w/ .8 and misses or makes w/ a miss causing the game to a 2nd overtime. Being that this game is the 2nd of a backto back and the previous night being in Utah, I can imagine that the Blazers lose in the 2 ot simply b/c they are out of gas…

Shallow men believe in luck, believe in circumstances, it was somebody’s name, or he happened to be there at the time, or it was so then, and another day would have been otherwise. Strong men believe in cause and effect-RW Emerson.

-

The ROckets game was clearly a cause and effect situation .

Luck.

The turn around shot Roy made with 1.8 seconds was skillful. But the game didn’t end there. Yao’s baseline shot was pretty lucky given he was fouled on the play. The subsequent game winning play with .8 left was well executed by Brandon and Steve Blake, but even then, that was a low percentage bailout shot that was aided by the fact that Houston’s defense on the play was dysfunctional for the first time since the middle of the fourth quarter. So you have something that’s unlikely to ever happen that way again given the same set of circumstances. I call that luck. Maybe a better word is odds.

by ranma on Nov 20, 2008 4:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

More than Luck

Last night at half time Channing walked up to half court and casually launched a shot that went in. It’s too easy to forget just how good professional athletes are. They have a God given gift. I still think the odds of Roy making that shot again are pretty darned good.

by toolman on Nov 20, 2008 4:34 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I those situations, it always feels like Roy WILL hit it. I’m sure we’ll see things like that from Brandon lots of times in his career. That’s skills. I’ll bet he couldn’t to that 2 in 10 times at practice… but put him in a game winning situation, and my moneys on him.

by ***Jason*** on Nov 20, 2008 4:38 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

On a good day

I’d bet that Broy would make that shot 70 percent of the time in practice if he was warm and able to square up.

If you want to make a season out of

Brandon Roy launching 30 footers over the defense with .8 left, down by one, and I bet money against you each time, I’d come out way ahead. For one thing, I suspect the Rockets will play defense next time given the same circumstances.

by ranma on Nov 20, 2008 4:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t want to make a season out of that shot. I just felt like to me it was the most satisfying moment of the season… so far. That’s what it’s all about. I don’t know though, I might take that bet with you. How many times has Brandon hit big game winners already. Kobe does things like that routinely. Some players just have ‘IT’… and those two guys are two of them. That’s skills. I would bet you though that if every member of BlazersEdge took the shot 10 x’s with 0.8 sec.‘s, the ball wouldn’t go in twice all night. Brandon is the man.

by ***Jason*** on Nov 20, 2008 4:51 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

We'll never know...

Brandon Roy’s pretty good, but he could have turned it on sooner, presumably, right?

by ranma on Nov 20, 2008 4:53 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

That is not what anyone is arguing. You are simply taking this too far

Of course the ideal situation is to play tough each minute of every game and win by a more comfortable and decisive margin, but it’s a win and skillfull players make those shots.

continuation to what I posted below

also, it’s not as if the Blazers were playing the Timberwolves and had to win in overtime w/ a 30 foot buzzer beater
b/c we fouled someone out of the inbounds pass… This is the Rockets, a playoff team in the Western conference that had at the time, all its key players healthy and going strong. The Blazers lose that game last year (we were 0-4 against them last season) . but this year keep it close, force OT and win…hello how much better where we supposed to do against them? We didnt even have Oden playing…

good point

That’s just basketball, and it doesn’t get any better than that. We were in that situation at the end of the game because we were playing a great team with Yao, McGrady, and Artest… and they were doing everything they could to win the game too. How we got into the situation is irrelevant to the fact that Brandon knocked down a huge shot because he’s a great player with the ability to do it when it counts.

by ***Jason*** on Nov 20, 2008 5:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Look, the question was,

what’s the most satisfying win? Insert multiple choice selection here. I posted my answer, and some reasoning. I found the Houston win unsatisfying. Why? Because to me you play the percentages, and the Blazers didn’t execute well enough to succeed in doing that and had to rely on a low percentage play bail themselves out. I would have felt great if, for example, the Blazers had managed to stop Yao Ming from scoring with under a second left, but they didn’t. Better defense and Roy not fouling a jump shooter would have been satisfying, to me.

I’m not actually all that interested in arguing the definition of words like luck and skill, I’m just saying I don’t want to resort to bailout shots no matter who’s attempting them, and since the Blazers did, I wasn’t as satisfied as in the case with Orlando when they didn’t have to shoot shots like that.

by ranma on Nov 20, 2008 5:22 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

You have a perception close to mine

I guess if you were at the Houston game it would have been wild and entertaining…so not to take that away from fans…but that said, from just a basketball fan and from someone who recognizes the difference between a lucky win and an out and out demoralizing butt whipping…the Chicago game would be first on my list, followed closely by the Orlando one…
We just need a win like the Chicago one…it was a breath of fresh air away from the robotic play I’m used to seeing…that game did not need coaching (at least on our side) The players took it to them and had Chicago on their heels all night..The game was fun to watch and as for the team, I would expect that getting some easy hoops for a change would tell them something about how easy the game can be. And when your two feet from the hoop and slamming it down……probably a lot of fun as well…A relaxing win for the fans and the Blazers….sorely needed IMO

That is why I qualified the “luck” comment because I didnt want you to think I was attacking you. and that’s what I’m talking about. I feel this is just a language thing where you are talking past me. You mention some kind of disbelief in luck. That’s interesting, but I think you know what I mean. It seems like you’re inferring some kind of pejorative directed at an athlete by using the word “luck”. I’m not denying the greatness or anything like that of players like Brandon Roy. Yet he misses shots all the time with the game on the line. Why do you suppose that is?

by ranma on Nov 21, 2008 12:04 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

well

This maybe dumb to say….but we would have to consider ourselves lucky to win that one!…. kinda a figure of speech, unless someone mathematically defines what you meant by lucky…..
with the Blazers saying we plan for these situations and the Rockets saying ; boy what a lucky shot that was and for Blazers fans to say that’s Roy’s skill that made that shot and the opposing side saying Gee, what were the chances of him making that shot….(they played a box zone and gambled that he couldn’t make the shot outside the three catching the ball going away from the hoop) pretty reasonable gamble, since they also thought the Blazers would go for a shorter, more high % shot(they only needed 2 to win and they didn’t want to foul either) so in effect they gambled on the long shot and the Blazers took what they gave them
So the point is…well there is none…….except how everyone perceives the Houston game vs the other two….The final seconds of the game became a calculated risk on both sides with Houston making the mistake of guarding the guy in-bounding the ball (they wasted a guy to use on their zone D…..so the skill of the Blazer player makes it less of a gamble but still involves a perception of luck and probability….so maybe you could still call it un-pure luck or at least 1/2 lucky or even 3/4 lucky……call it no luck at all……it don’t matter, it’s about which game was the most satisfying. Some did not see the Houston game as the most satisfying because they don’t like their wins decided by chance……. when they can get more satisfying wins by using their players skills before it gets down to last second shots…..

by 67 on Nov 21, 2008 2:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not luck even if the Rockets couldn't figure out who was guarding whom

Sure the Statistics indicate that there is a low chance this shot is made again but acknowledgement of the “odds” or statistics is an indication that you concede to the mathematical and thereby predictable element of that shot. That would disuade anyone that luck was indeed involved.

Semantics.

The whole point is that was not an optimal situation, and the Blazers should have played better to avoid it.

by ranma on Nov 20, 2008 4:52 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

"Not optimal" is not akin to "luck"

Per Dictionary .com

: Luck. N. an unknown and unpredictable phenomenon that causes an event to result one way rather than another; “bad luck caused his downfall”; “we ran into each other by pure chance”

Brandon admitted after the game to the ESPN reporter that he and the guys practiced a shot from deep with under 1.0 secs to play .

I will never contend that Roy simply made a “lucky shot” , because that is insulting to Brandon.

Running around the court without a clue seemingly the entire game.

KP traded this guy & Viktor K for LMA? You have got to be kidding me. Almost as enjoyable was watching Joakim Noah clench his fists and stamp his feet, like a big baby. I’m still somewhat stuck in the past. Even when we were up by 21 in the first, I’m sitting there telling my wife that Chicago just need to chip away 7 points per quarter.

Not this time, I guess. I’d love it if this was a less rare event. Blowouts are typically less thrilling, but they sure are nice to see once and again.

I loved it when, I think it was in the second quarter, we had a sequence where Rudy brought the ball up. It went something like this:

Rudy passes in to Greg. Greg backs down, passes it back out. Rudy pump fakes, passes it back in to Greg. Greg backs down, passes it back out. Rudy taps it back in, Greg tips it back out, Rudy buries the 3.

the buzzer-beater was the most exciting thing

I have ever witnessed at a basketball game… ever. I think it was just because of the emotional roller-coaster ride that led up to it in the last few seconds of the game. I was smiling for a couple of days after that one.

I went for Orlando win as well....

……cuz a good solid win on the road against a good team will do more for us in the long run. I am tired of the last second heroics..but I am not tired of the total beatdown either. That was certainly lacking last year…total beatdowns of opponents..we used to let them sneek back in…maybe it was for entertainment purposes! ..but my heart..nor mental sanity needs none of that! Now let’s followup this latest win with another good effort…all starts on the D side of the ball….and finishes at the rim..for a JAM!!!

I picked the Houston buzzer beater

That was the most satisfying for me for a few reasons. The first is that it was on national TV, so I got to watch it, which was crazy satisfying. Secondly, my roommate is a huge Houston Rocket fan, and we watched it together. It was so satisfying just to watch that exciting of a basketball game.

by usdblazerfan on Nov 20, 2008 3:10 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

This is easy...

Most exciting ~ Rockets

Best indicator of possibilities ~ beating a good playoff team on the road in Orlando was good. Great to see the blazers get a very good road win so early in the season.

Most Satisfying?
How could you not say the Bull’s game? There were good games last year, 42 wins, 42 losses, and I think the largest win margin all year was something like 12 points. Good teams put away inferior opponents early and don’t let up. Many times last year the Blazers would play down to the level of whoever they were playing, and did wind up with the W a decent amount of the time, but if you play with fire enough you will get burned.

Extremely satisfying to see the Blazers do what a good team should do to a inferior oppenent at home!

Rooo-D!

I agreed with several comments above, but you said it best.

I vote Rockets

mostly b/c that game twiggs and I were sharing our table , graciously I might add, with some obnoxious hecklers who <3 the L*kers and kept saying we would lose. Naturally Twiggs and I smuggly sipped our drinks and watched the score see-saw back and forth untill Brandon hits that sweet and sexy turn around w/ a second and milichange left on the clock. Im telling you we were yelling and cheering untill Yao does , well you know. I cant tell you how upset I was. I downed my drink, texted the babysitter to get my son ready and start packing my purse and getting my money to pay the tab. Then Brandon , well you know….. and my purse went flyin, including all contents, EVERYWHERE. Twiggs and I were hugging and screaming and soo happy. Best moment of my life!!!

was it better than holding your son for the first time?

didn’t think so

We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

HAHA yeah I know , situations such as this call for serious drama

:) Nothing compares to holding my son for the first time, of course I remember little of that b/c of the drugs I was on but I would say watching him grow up and talking and walking and running and then being potty trained and reading and writing and saying hilarious things and now turning into a little kid rather than just a baby or toddler…yeah Q is pretty awesome and he does stuff all the time that make me say to myself “this is the BEST moment of my life!”.

Hey Sophia... I know exactly what you mean about it being the best moment of your life.

Of course there were more important moments in my life, and yours I’m sure, but when that shot went in, WE WENT NUTZ. Me and my buddy were jumping up and down screaming and hugging eachother and complete strangers. Everybody was going crazy… except for these four Yao fans who were sitting in front of us wearing Yao jerseys. They had had their turn a few seconds earlier when it looked like Yao had sealed it with his foul shot. They were doing some chant (sorry I don’t speak Chinese) where one of them would rattle something off and then they would all yell ‘YAO MING’. They were going crazy. I wanted to knock their heads together, but I resisted because that would have been ‘wrong’.

I know it was just a regular season win, but it happened right in front of our seats, and I will NEVER forget it.

3 awesome wins

for 3 different reasons. The Rockets game was the most exciting. The Bulls game was the most fun.

I voted for the Magic game.as the most satisfying. The Rockets game was kinda fluky (still awesome though of course) and the Bulls pretty much laid down and died. Against the Magic, we beat a quality team on the road with a 4 quarter effort. That was the one where I really thought to myself— that looked like a playoff team out there.

A great case can be made for any of the three though. Solid poll question.

I love seeing BRoy mean muggin'.

He needs to do that far more often.

Sergio's no look pass to Trout

I saw Sergio make what I perceived to be a pass to GO that wasn’t even close, thinking it’s going out of bounds. Next thing you know Trout streaking down the baseline picks it up for a reverse slamma jamma dunk. I didn’t even see Trout coming but Sergio did.

The Road win would have to be it as it was our most crucial win of the season..

I was impressed by the coaching and defense

Nate has a good thing going right now. Frye is hardly seeing minutes and Outlaw doesn’t get the ball as much. They had a great strategy to take Rose out of the game. I like what I’m seeing from Nate. Every victory is sweet.

What's with all the beating around the bush?

If anyone was at the game last night, I really want to know one thing that I can’t believe hasn’t been covered. Frye got some significant burn, how did his deadball defense look? What he swatting away all the after the whistle jumpers, ev

It's like the fresh sushi on the buffet

Seriously, he doens’t contribute much on the court, but I would miss the hell out of that guy if he were gone.

Buzzer beater definitely

The Bulls were playing a back-to-back on the road, where they’ve sucked so far this year. But the fact that they gave the L*kers a run for their money the night before made our blow-out more impressive, though.

Favorite under-appreciated moments from last night...

1. Seeing Martell nailing nearly all his threes in the early-bird shootarounds.
2. The warrior-like look in Steve Blake’s face as he stomped off the court with blood streaming from his head.
3. For once, quick, ill-advised jumpshots from Channing and Sergio did not matter in the slightest, since Joel or Greg would just grab the rebound and stuff it anyway.
4. Travis not once but TWICE stopping a Bulls fast break by catching a guy from behind, and rather than fouling, forcing the opposing player to knock the ball off his own leg and creating a turnover.
5. At one point late in the second quarter looking up and realizing we had actually DOUBLED UP the score on the Bulls.
6. Joakim Noah getting his 5th foul… in the SECOND QUARTER.
7. Greg’s hook shot. A couple of really nice ones.
8. Getting on the big-screen twice. Worth every penny I paid for that lower-bowl seat. ;-)

Favorite Moment on a Win

No Question – the last 2 seconds of the Rockets game. So much happening in so little time, and Brandon nailing the impossible shot for a win.

The Bulls game was the favorite win, because the teamwork was exceptional the entire game. Watching everyone contribute, and so many outstanding plays on offense and defense. Loved the bouce pass from Sergio to Travis for the reverse slam! It just looked like the ball went by everyone on the Houston defense.

This was more satisfying overall, but Rockets more exciting

It’s just nice to see a whoopin’ like this since we haven’t managed a blowout with the newest crew. This is the sort of game that makes us start looking as if we’re not just an up and coming team with a lot of young talent and a healthy dose of guts, but maybe just a damn good team. Period. Great teams gut out tough wins (Houston), but they also beat-up, beat-down and otherwise demoralize an inferior team from time to time…thoroughly, coldly, heartlessly.

On a side note…I wasn’t even going to this game until 3 pm when my co-worker who occasionally inherets a set of 6th row tickets from friend who has season tickets bestowed this funfest on me and buddy. I’m still trying to wipe the grin off my face.

Underappreciated moments? Tough to find, since all the performances were so ridiculous. Alley-oops all around. Dunks galore. Channing digging himself out the funk down the stretch. Our centers planting flags in the paint on both ends of the floor (NONE SHALL PASS!). It’s all appreciated. Diogu played decently in scrub time, so there’s that.

More than anything we’ve seen so far, this team seems like it stepped it up a notch on the “learning to play together with all the new faces” scale. They are all starting to look really comfortable together, frankly faster than I was expecting it. The stew’s not done yet, but it’s starting to smell REALLY good.

Now lets go tromp all over the kings (maybe we can donate some putty knives, so they can scrape Spencer Hawes back off the floor of the key when we’re done), and then see how we fare with the suns.

Go Blazers!

Rockets

I hate to be simplistic, but the Rockets are better opponents than the Bulls. I didn’t expect a win over Houson but we pulled it off.

OK, I didn’t expect a rout over Chicago either and we haven’t had a rout in a million years, but still, a quailty win (even if luck was involved, maybe) over a quality team is more satisfying.
