Greg Oden's PER = 24.05 (12th in the NBA)
I don't know how many stat nuts are on this site, but I'm a big fan of as many as can be provided. Thus far, 6 games into his NBA career Greg Oden is the 12th most efficient overall player, 1 spot ahead of K*be. He also has the #1 overall rebound rate in the entire league. Total Rebound Rate - He gathers up 23.3% of all available rebounds. He also is the 2nd most prolific blocker for his time on the court. He's averaging 5.81 blocks per 48, and if you adjust for pace, he'd easily be #1 overall (Turiaf is currently #1 thanks to GS's ridiculous pace). He's also not as bad as has been reported on the offensive end. He currently has a total shot % of .587 (44th overall) and is scoring around 24 points per 48 minutes. That means if he's able to settle down at 32 minutes per game, even without improvement, on the average we can expect 16 points, 12 boards and 4 blocks.
I was getting as worried as anyone after he got injured, and equally so after the Miami game in which he looked really raw, but I'm feeling quite comforted in his play the last week, and in this teams future. Without Oden this team didn't have the potential to be leaps and bounds better than anyone. With him, in 3-4 years I EXPECT an NBA Championship.

Look at the people above him
(besides stupid fluke Morrow) They are all super stars. And then theres Oden, the rookie, very impressive. ANd he will continue to get better and better.

Well...
…I think it’s fair to say that Morrow is either a fluke, or else he will soon become a superstar. I don’t know how likely it is, but anyone who can shoot the percentages from distance that he’s been getting is going to play for a long time in this league.
Far more likely: he’s just hot right now, and once he cools off will become a serviceable roleplayer at best.
But right now he’s on fire, and only time can tell.

Does 24.05 mean he's in the bottom 24.05% in the league?
by tominhawaii on Nov 20, 2008 7:23 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
NO
its a composite figure that represents his overall efficiency as a player – the higher the number, the better. The BEST players rarely have a PER above 30. As stated in the post, Oden’s 24.05 PER rating is the 12th best of all NBA players.

I still don't like Pers
If Pers are so cool, why can’t 100 be the best? It just seems like a fake stat to me.

#2 among centers
behind only Superman.
- among rookies, behind only “Tom” Morrow.

I have no idea why that happened
i meant to say he’s also 2nd among rookies, behind Morrow.

Oh formatting
Very impressive numbers from Oden.
Hollingers other interesting stat, Playoff Odds, have Blazers as 3rd in the West. (it’s heavily based on point differential)

More importantly
Hollinger has the % chance that we win the NBA Championship this year at 4.3%.

No, that was Cowherd who said he will never be a good offensive player (and PER is mostly about offense)
Abbott said he has not arrived – yet! He believes in Greg. Big difference. And Cowherd has flip flopped on the issue.

To be far to Hollinger
Blocks and steals doesn’t mean that a player is even a good defensive player, only that they gamble a lot. Defensive ebounding rate is a much better defensive state at least for big men.

So far so good
It was a nice way to start his comeback against some of the creamiest frontlines in the league. I’m looking forward to his matchup against Howard in Portland. Remember, this is a very raw Oden we’ve seen, he can only get better.

Wait....
I don’t get it. Is this the same guy that BE posters described as: “lackadaisical”, “raw”, “passionless”, “limited in skill,” “out of his league”, “a MAJOR project”, “sluggish”, “not all that athletic”, “lacking in confidence”, having “no spring in his step”, lacking in “energy and hustle”, “lacking in intensity”, “unfocused”, “fundamentally detached”, “a blundering rookie”, “awkward”, “mechanical”, and “a bust”?

Maybe, but it was only one BEer I think. What was that guy's name
Blazerrule I think. He was the second coming of Pippen Ain’t Easy. Where are they now?

Those quotes came from about 10 different posters
I did not think it was necessary to identify the authors and call them out publicly. It was more of a, “you know who you are” type of shaming.
I think my favorites are “not all that athletic” and “a MAJOR project.” A few of the comments were relatively descriptively accurate for his first game, but those two comments took it a whole additional step.

people over reacted
to G.O.’s lack of conditioning. That is what we saw in those first few games. He was breathing deep and slowing down. He is starting to get his stamina back and we are seeing the results of that. I think G.O. is everything I expected to be and more. Does he have a great back to the basket game yet? no. Does he look awkward at times with double and triple teams? yes. Does he still need game experience, of any kind? yes, yes. He will come along, but his impact will be immediate. He has a unique nba body, with a unique skill set. His impact will be felt around the league this year, but when it will be really exciting is when we have a different answer to those questions.

I think he is still a project
which, considering that he’s already double-double capable, is incredibly exciting.

pippen ain’t easy! Wow that was so long ago!

I think with the exception of "limited in skill," "out of his league," and "a bust,"
most of those things were still a fair assessment until about 4 games ago.
I heart taxes.

Also hilarious:
If you take away the 6.09 Minutes Per Game qualification (there’s a link at the top of the page for “All” instead of "Qualified"), fan favorite Steven Hill leads the entire association with a 90.51 PER! Granted, he only played 2 minutes total this season but apparently he tore it up!

AWESOME
He’s destined to be a superstar. We should have cut Oden to take him.

3rd in Rebound Rate
is Joel. I’m not sure if that proves that the Blazes have a great rebounding team, or that they are dependent on the C position for rebounding, or that they’ve played mediocre rebounding clubs.

FYI
If you are wondering if Oden’s good numbers are coming soley from facing weak defenses, here’s what the numbers say:
Average PER of Centers in the League: 17.667
Average PER of Centers allowed by Oden’s opponents: 17.28
Two potential sources of bias in those numbers:
1) They do not take into account the fact that Oden has played 5 of 6 games on the road.
2) They do not take into account the strength of schedule of each team.
More importantly, Oden’s PER is probably being helped by the fact that he is newish to the league and has been playing a bit more against opponents bench rather than their starters.
Based on all those considerations, I’d project his PER to decline a little, but not a lot.
