Team Identity ?

What is this teams identity and do we need one?

Star-divide

I think we need to develop a team identity so we can start to play to our strengths

Of course it's still in question what our identity may be, and it's possible the coaches and players are working towards that.....But right now we have a lot of weaknesses and I'd be pressed to figure out any one thing that could be considered a strength....

So IMO, working to a specific goal of what you want this team to be, should be part of the organizations levels to progress....

Right now our strengths could be ...talented players with depth...good combinations of IQ and athleticism, and of course, youth.... (not to mention KP and staff)

So without going into all the weaknesses (there are a lot, but they can be fixed) where do we go from here?

team Identity

1. do we want to be a fast break team?

2 do we need a couple of knock dead shooters?

3. do we need a penetrating point guard for half court offense?

4. do we need to get bigger and more physical?

5 do we need a coach with a different mindset?

6.do we need better defenders?

7.do we need more hustling, intense, players like Rudy or Batum?

8.do we need more emphasis on getting more fundamentally sound players?

9 do we need more quickness and speed?

It is still early, but getting to the next levels should be in the plans (and I'm sure it is),

Getting talented players is only the first step...now comes the hard work and tough decisions and every game played should be another evaluating step towards getting a team together .......with the idea on what do you want this team to be?....

The decision will be based on the idea that several players on this team are envisioned as being here forever...and with this in mind, you keep them and build around the gaps....but you have to know what type of team you wish to build to....(unless it's decided that a jack of all trades team is what we want?= LA and San Antone,Boston) ......guess this season would go a long way towards answering some of those questions

I for one, am getting tired of the slow, methodical, one dimensional approach...At some point we may need to go all in like Texas hold-em....We have a pretty good hand after the flop.......so lets get to the final table play with the big boys

What are you saying?

You don’t want a team like SA, LA, or Boston. You want a team like Phoenix, Golden State, or Denver?

No I wasn't saying that

Sorry if it sounded that way…..i was trying to say that if we want to be like them, then we need to identify our goal at some point this season…(other than getting to the playoffs) and always keep in mind, what kind of team are we looking to be…gear our game towards this and and any future moves, if any…It is yet to be determined and I understand that, but after this season, we should have a clearer direction on where we are heading. I made the list as examples, but not necessarily the answers…..

Real Good

It sounded like you wanted to run and gun instead of try to build a team that can win with defense and execution. I agree with your thoughts on needing to find an identity. I am seeing three more players that I would not move in a trade: Rudy, Joel, and Batum. I think they can have clearly defined roles that fit in with the big three. I also lean toward Webster and Frye fitting into roles quite nicely.

I would say the rest are possible pieces that you could move to obtain a PG and maybe another 3 pt shooter if a team had both available and was looking to lose some salary or shake things up. I have no idea who would fit those but I am slowly moving into the “Blake isn’t going to be enough” camp. It is early this season and he could start playing closer to last year’s level so I am not 100% there yet…

I think they are going to be a team that can play inside out with the starters and then run with the second unit. They will be able to put aggressive defenders on the floor and pack it in if they want to. I think they are becoming a “jack of all trades” team that will be able to force their will on offense and defense instead of having to respond to other teams all the time.

This is a Young Team

as annoying as it is to watch us lose to teams like PHX and LA, we can easily beat teams like WAS, Char, ATL. atleast we are better than those teams w/o greg. when he comes back we will have more options on guarding big men and reducing pts in paint

"All our holes," says shooting guard Brandon Roy, a surprise All-Star last year in his second season, "are holes that Greg is going to plug."

by bowdown on Nov 2, 2008 12:12 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

one thing is certain:

Plan A going into this year, making Greg Oden the center of our team’s identity, is not going to be effective this year. We need a Plan B.

“When Greg comes back” is not a good Plan B.

I would like to see the Blazers identity revolve around LMA: Put LMA in the paint and surround him with three slasher-crasher scorers like Rudy, Outlaw and Roy. Add a wing player who can nail the 3 consistently to stretch the other team’s D, and bingo, there’s our identity. That plus tenacious D.

We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.

by MT Suit on Nov 2, 2008 12:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I agree about making LMA the center of the team, but...

We need to him to be more consistently inside, rather than floating outside like he seems to do in a lot of games. For all of last year we all said, " we don’t need LMA to be strong inside, we’ll have Oden next year, he’ll make up for how soft LMA is." We need LMA to be tough inside whether or not Oden is going to be there alongside. As far as who to put around LMA, I think Joel and Oden will be fine, I think Martell would be solid at the three, Batum can also be that great defender so possibly start him. Roy obviously, then I suggest we try to work Bayless into the starting lineup. Bayless is the kind of aggressive guard that can almost always get inside, he also has the physical to tools to stop players like Tony Parker, Chris Paul, etc. Rudy and Travis come in off the bench with Sergio and Channing for quick athletic energy unit that runs.

remember, remember the fifth of November

I agree...

it seems like LMA has fallen in love with the idea of being able to roam out into 3 point land, and has forgotten that one of his most important roles is down at the low post. I would like to see him make the most of short range jumpers, hook shots and slam dunks. I don’t like seeing him compete with BRoy, Rudy, Travis and others for the perimeter game.

Not more than 8 weeks ago...

everyone was talking about how hard the schedule would be for the first few weeks.

We open flatter than a pancake against the reigning Western Conference Champs, beat perrenniel powerhouse San Antonio, then lose to perrenniel powerhouse Phoenix… and yet the panic button is getting pressed to the point that it’s batteries are fading. Why? We’re playing some of the best teams from last year, right? Teams that have established offenses and rotations, right?

1. Fast break team… yes, we want to have some fast break aspect, but no we don’t want to be a 7-seconds-or-less D’Antoni team. Definitely something that needs to be improved.

2. Knock dead shooters… see Martell and Rudy.

3. Penetrating point guard… see Roy and Bayless (I think that’s why Nate put him in last night… to penetrate against that Phoenix zone)

4. Bigger and more physical… see Oden and Przybilla.

5. Different coach with a different mindset… see no, we need fans that don’t expect us to be 3-0 against teams that won over 55 games last year. Last night wasn’t a bad loss. It was the 2nd of a back-to-back, not a home game, they landed in Phoenix at 2:30 am, played a still very good Phoenix team, and couldn’t get a call.

6. Better defenders… meh. Again, it was the second game in two nights. They’re young, going against solid teams that have established offensive sets. They’ll never be able to stop a team that is just hitting lots of shots. How many times did you see Phoenix hit a shot with less than 3 seconds on the clock last night with a defenders hand in his face? At least 3… it was just going in for the Suns.

7. More hustlers… no. I think that everybodies been doing quite well on the hustle, so I’m not sure what you’re insinuating there.

8. Fundamentals… this is a young team, learning the big-boy NBA game. Quick just had a story in the Oregonian about the Portland State coach (I think) that regularly stops in on team practices who commented that he’d never seen the fundamental get covered like they were in Blazer practices… I think that means McMillan is working on it, give it some time.

9. Quickness and speed… no. Outside of Joel, the whole team is fast. Roy plays at a slower speed, but that’s how he abuses opponents (and may I say, man is his game looking more and more polished… he’s going to become unguardable someday). Channing is quirky, but he still moves well. LMA and Batum might be the two fastest 6’ 9" and up guys in the league. Rudy will scorch anybody. We have speed.

I’m not sure what it is you are saying that you want… Boston, San Antonio, the L@kers… aren’t those the teams that are responsible for 75% of the last decades worth of Championships?

Personally, I think we need to take a wait-and-see approach. Two of our starters are out. Our schedule is brutal. Our team is young. We won a game against San Antonio (several major points about this win… 1] we snapped a 12 game losing streak to them, 2] the Spurs were unable to beat us in the same late game fashion that a battle-tested, playoff team would, and 3] we beat them by executing down the strectch. Great win.), when in all reality we very easily could be 0-3.

Are the fans, especially the super smart ones that reside here at the BEdge, really going to meltdown if we start out 7-12? If the Blazers played every game over the next couple weeks like the one they did against LA, I’d say we have major reason for concern. But they played decent, and lost. No big deal.

In sum, patience grasshopper.

well you sound like a Blazer fan

but you may have missed the point(probably because I wasn’t too clear..I’m not bashing just asking questions)
1.We do not have a fast break because we don’t have the mindset…(and maybe not the players) and we don’t play the necessary defense to get rebounds, turnovers and force the offense out of their first options, to get one started……and we don’t have the fundamentals to run the break if we do get a turnover or rebound
hundred miles away….so I guess we don’t want a fast break team…..
2.knock down shooters…..See Rudy and Martell…yes I do see them as capable shooters, but I was talking about a dead eye pressure shooter to help with zone “D” (Phoenix went to zone and that ended up breaking the Blazer’s back because they had no answer)
3.So you think our point guard spot should be Roy with Bayless backing up. (wow)
4.Bigger and physical (just part of a hypothetical question like they all are)
5.Coaching will always be in question, due to Nate’s slow methodical style (and questionable substitutions….if we have all the players like you say we have….then the pressure is on Nate….right?……(what kind of team does he want out there?).He needs to get his teachings translated out onto the floor….This team is missing so many important fundamentals…..
6. good defense is lacking on this team…. partially due to fundamental positioning and also lack of quickness …..it can be fixed…but it has not been…you need to control space and force the offense out of their first option and then recognize, the second, and try to get them up against the shot clock
7. We do not make hustle an intricate part of our game….you know , diving on the floor for loose balls, relentless pursuit of the ball,(with the exception of running the floor which we do well)…yes, we see it in spurts, but for a young team it should be in every play……
8. the fundamentals have not been translated out onto the floor and yes we have a team in which many never finished college .This is where, if you fill your team with youth, you need to be prepared to pound in fundamentals until it becomes part of their game…..example= Outlaw
9. speed & quickness is more than just running around …it has to be put into the flow of the game…so if you think we have it, why aren’t we using it as a weapon….? And on defending and stopping the ball……well you see what it does from a point guard standpoint in Nash and Parker…….I guess we don’t see eye to eye on definitions of quickness applied to basketball

All in all, I didn’t do this post to say what we have and don’t have necessarily….it was just intended to provoke some thought

And I didn’t say I did not want to be like LA or San Antone…but was trying to say, if we want to be like them, then what’s it gonna take…..that being…. continuing to look at ways to be better and while doing that, have an idea on what kind of team we are trying to become…..

True

and then the 63 game winning streak

My thoughts

I would be happy with a defensivly minded, scrappy team, that new the fundamentals very well, and wasn’t afraid to penetrate on anyone. of course I also think thats what Nate is going for as well… My only critique on the way the team has played so far is that they are one of the few teams that have a shooting coach and if I am not mistaken I think he is supposed to be one of the best, so why is it they are not hitting there shots?

blazers identity

so much of winning basketball games is about easy baskets and creating matchup problems..

The Blazers have the pieces to create some easy baskets, but I think team identity often revolves around where you really work to get your easy baskets. Do you push and run to get fast break points or do you pound the ball into the paint or create penetration to create more points in the paint?

We beat the Spurs by taking care of the ball by limiting turnovers and hustling on offensive boards (maximized our possessions and field goal attempts) and creating turnovers and securing defensive boards (minimizing our possessions). We would need to shoot a bit better (and defend a lot better on the permimeter) to a be a contender, but I do think that this could be the most successful identity for this team. This success really requires that we get plenty of blocked shots, steals, and rebounds.

I think you're asking a good question

And I think people are missing it badly.

What is the identity that we want for this team? If you know what direction you’re going, then you know what you need to do to get there. If you’re going across water, you build a team that has a boat, and if you’re going across desert, you have that boat pick up water to give to the team as they cross the desert. You also get some nice ATV vehicles.

I think this year is still too soon. Part of building that team is being able to determine “DO we have that ATV vehicle, or will this one break down a lot?” We have all sorts of vehicles, but we don’t know if they’re good yet. You want to build around what you DO have, so we need to figure that part out first.

My thoughts anyway.

This was also a question to ask when we tore everything apart, and I’m honestly not sure what that answer was. My guess is that we want a team like the spurs.

We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.
