Oden for ROY? (With Poll)
Oden for ROY? (With Poll)
I decided to do a little research on the top rookies in the league and see how our guys are doing comparatively. What I found was pretty interesting and shows that we have a good chance of seeing one our players as ROY this year. The main prospects on our team for ROY are obviously Rudy and Oden. Rudy we know about, but Oden hasn’t been talked about much, so let’s look at the numbers. Before everyone jumps on me, I know it is too early to tell, I just want to put this out there. I got these stats from NBA.com players section. I went through the stats and highlighted the leaders for each stat at this point of the season, this is what we have so far:

Me too
but the poll would be better if it included Co-ROYs
Rudy and Oden

Edit fanpost, delete poll, make a new one
It’s the only path…one that you must choose for yourself…
Whoever was posting Oden up....was just stupid.

Oh no, now we'll have infighting
Between the Rudy for ROY and the Oden for ROY campaigns.
Personally, I’m pulling for Roy to get his ROY trophy back. I think he deserves it. Again.

where is the option for Anthony Morrow?
Both Greg and Rudy have a shot. Rudy probobly has less of one, just because the American media doesn’t hype him as much as Rose/Beasley/Oden/Mayo.
I think the winner will be Rose, but I could easily imagine Oden being the most deserving by the end of the season.
For now, though, the league’s best rookie has been Morrow, at least according to Hollinger’s PER (Greg is 3rd, Rudy is 4th… both ahead of the Rose/Beas/Mayo triumvirate).

The media is afraid to hype Morrow
Because, all things considered, he has the pedigree of a guy who has a few great games and flames out.
I think you’ll see a lot of Tom Brady-esque stories about Morrow if he can score 15+ a game until the all star break.

I doubt there's ever been a rookie
who put up back-to-back efficiency numbers, shooting from the perimeter, like Morrow’s put up these last two games. It’s amazing before you even consider the fact that he was undrafted.
I bet Georgia Tech’s coach is taking some serious flak from his buddies – T.Young didn’t put up huge numbers either, but at least he was a freshman and got enough burn to get in the lottery…
Too soon to say about Oden v. Rose v. Mayo, but I think it’s a three horse race. Rudy won’t get enough shots or media hype, and people don’t think of him as a “real” rookie. I agree with what somebody else said – Greg will need AT LEAST 15 and 10 as his averages to really be in the mix. Mayo and Rose have the luxury of taking as many shots as they want. Greg does not.
Q: Is Greg favoring his knee?
Frye: He favors dunking on your head, that's what he favors.

I think it will be
either Rose or Oden.
I think Rudy has the talent to win, but he’s not getting Rose minutes, nor will he be impacting games like Oden will later in the season.

Why would we trade for a guy already on our team?
Does this get us a trade exception or something?

I think if Greg
gets his PPG up closer to the others, which I think he can, he’ll be in serious centention with the other stats he brings. And you have to look at our team then too and see if we are winning( I think we will be). The other teams are not like Portland, even with the loss last night we have all seen something with our Blazers so far this year: we are coming a long a lot faster than any of anyone thought we would. Last year would we have taken 3-2 on a 5 game (2 back to back including tonight) roadstreak?

At least this is the last year we can hope for ROY
Maybe after this we can get on with winning some MVPs

That would be nice.
That almost deserves a fanpost in itself! Who is going to be our first league MVP? Roy is obviously the only one in line for it at this point.

Oden needs at least 15 and 10 to compete
Rose and Mayo are putting up some ridiculous numbers.

Yeah and hes not to far away from that.
His PPG figures in hist first two games as well 0, and 3. Since then hes scored 11,13,22. If he keeps gettin between 10-20 that should average out to about 15. My hope is that as he gets more comfotable he will grab more rebounds. Anyone notice last night he didn’t have as big of a game defensively? Maybe because he was focusing on offense, maybe it was playing GS, who knows. It will come. Oden for ROY!

I don't think Oden will get ROY...
Although he will be close with 20/10 and 3 or 4 blocks a game coming off the BENCH! :) If he keeps progressing at the current rate (which won’t happen…) by the all star break he’ll be averaging 40 points, 20 boards, and 15 blocks a game. Maybe he can get league mvp and average a quadruple double for the second half of the season. ;)
Bottom line is, once he gets his conditioning at a higher level which will come with more time, if he can stay out of foul trouble, and stop shuffling his feet, he will be nearly unstoppable. All but two or three teams are going to have to double or triple team him every time he gets the ball. Plus the guy his his free throws. So not only can they not defend him one on one, they can’t risk fouling him. I like to think that Oden will be compared to someone like Olajuwon rather than Shaq.

Coming off the bench?
I don’t think Oden’s coming off the bench for too much longer. Oden is NOT the backup center, lol.

how about 6th man of the year?
Averaging 40,20, and 15m he’ll be the first player to lock up the ROY, 6th man and MVP all in one season. On second thought, he probably won’t win MVP. Imagine the type of number Pryz will be putting up in order to keep Oden out of the starting lineup.
by keephopealive on Nov 20, 2008 3:14 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually think Rose and Oden will be Co-ROY this year
Rose has been so impressive so early, it’s hard to imagine him not putting up similar numbers or even better as the season goes on. Additionally, how good the team is usually doesn’t factor into ROY voting.
I think Oden will get significantly better as the season progresses because his body will get more conditioned, and people will take notice of how much better defensively the Blazers will be because of him.
by Ozzie Montana on Nov 19, 2008 12:58 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Too soon.
But I don’t think Rudy stands a chance, next to Oden. Oden’s gotten better with each game and we have no idea when that trend will stop. Was last night the norm, or a sub-par game from him? Either way, Rose has to be the next serious contender. His numbers look Roy-esque (that’s “Roy”, not necessarily “R.O.Y.”, though they’re sorta the same thing). That kid’s gonna be a star. I have a huge man-crush on Rudy — like everybody else I know — but he doesn’t have to lead a team the way Rose does. Rudy’s an “energy” guy, but Rose is the future of his organization. There’s a big difference.

i love rudy and oden but im biased
so instead im going to withhold my opinion until the all star break, i think OJ Mayo and Beasley have benefitted in a way, teams will adjust to them and their game.
Oden and Rudy have such good skills that adjustments are difficult, and their work rate is quite high.
If i had my way they would be co-rookie of the year, and bayless/batum will make the All rookie team.
by Yawnie on Nov 19, 2008 1:36 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
Batum may make the rookie team, but I really don't think Bayless will be there
at this point anyway. Beasely is simply too ugly to ever win anything. OJ shares his name with infamy, so people will shy away from him just because they don’t want to award OJ anything.
