I hate to say it, but trade Blake.
First off, I have a ton of respect for Steve Blake as a professional basketball player. I think he does an adequate job at his position fairly consistently. His work ethic and heart are unquestionable in my mind. He seems to have the community extras that the Blazers front office demands as well. Why, then, do I whole-heartedly endorse trading Steve Blake? Talent.
We have too much guard talent and not enough minutes. Roy, Rudy, Sergio, Bayless, and Webster (SF/SG) when he returns. I am willing to live with whatever mistakes Sergio makes, as our new starting point guard, all season long. We can only guess at his ceiling at this point, and if we trade him before we ever know, we are foolish. I believe Sergio's game would flourish if he were given keys to Poppa KP's hotrod. For those of you that do not feel this way, think of this scenario:
Start Rudy at the point. With Roy in the game, all our PG does is bring the ball past half court and give it to Brandon. Would you rather have Blake or Rudy running and cutting and ready to receive a kickout?
When a substitution at guard is made, we bring in Sergio at point, and either slide Brandon (SF) and Rudy (SG) over, or rest one. If they both need rest we have Bayless, and Webster/Trout/Batum to find minutes for... AGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The more I think of all the exciting combinations, the more emphatic I get. Blake just seems like an odd duck amongst a flock of hungry birds of prey.
If we do trade Blake (which I doubt we will, honestly), let me be the first to say:
"Steve Blake, thank you for leaving your home planet to come play basketball here on Earth. I admire your study game and demeanor. Enjoy your millions of dollars and a long career, in whichever galaxy you choose to play!"

With Rudy and Roy in the game
Who defends the opponent’s PG? We don’t want either of those guys matching up against quicker guards. That’s about the only way to make guys like Sebastian Telfair dangerous. I know Sergio and Blake haven’t exactly done a stellar job at guarding quick PGs either, but I just feel like there’s a reason we don’t see that lineup.
Did you see how Greg did versus CP3 on the pick and roll?
two possessions, two fouls
the Roy-Rudy starting backcourt is a pipe dream
unless it’s against a team without a point guard like…the Warriors
Blake runs the half court sets, he gets everybody the ball where they like it. Nate loves him
nexxxxt
It is good to have tons of talent!!
Why don’t fans realize this? If frye or Bayless aren’t getting minutes, its their fault, they aren’t good enough. Get better and then well talk.
Why does everyone want to consolidate?? Do you guys only want 10 players on our roster? It is ok to have backup backups. They are insurance in case one of our guys go down with an injury. IN the meantime they better be bustin their butts in practice so when that day comes they can step up right away.

Fine keep Blake!
Just make him the 3rd string PG. Does that seem fair? I only wish to trade him for his sake, but if he wants to hang out on the bench and workout and provide insurance for the team, COOL!
Blake will sit
When he is the third best point guard. He’s playing now because he’s the best point guard on the roster. The goal is the playoffs, and Steve Blake allows us the best shot of reaching that goal.
Travis Outlaw is an alien, but in a good way.
Awesome Graphic was provided by CIC, because he felt like he should be hazed.

Because
When the backup’s backup is Steve Blake, that can be a problem. Or Bayless even. These are players who deserve minutes. No team will survive long with 15 solid, minute deserving players. That’s when the infighting starts……
Every great team has to cut their rotation down to at least 8-9. In the playoffs, most teams go 7-8. You want to be able to play your best players most the game. That means backups don’t get as much burn and the backup’s backup’s get even less.
Witty Unpredictable Talent and Natural Game
Blake
At some point, Sergio is going to take his starting status. He is playing superior defense & is taking care of the ball better. You are right, we need to see how Sergio does starting full time. It will help us come to a conclusion regarding the future of that position.
Lets watch how Sergio plays tonight.
Time For The Spanish Guard To Step Up
but he can't shoot worth a lick
and we need Roy surrounded by shooters.

No, don't say that... He's shooting 35%, same as last year... Say this...
“Sergio is a GREAT, GREAT, GREAT passer, shows signs of being actually able to run the break (which is saying something for this perpetually rotten running team), and creates points with his court vision. There are PLENTY of shooters on this team, Sergio is a real PASSER.”
I like Blake and would start Blake. But now I see just what it is that Sergio brings…

There's a reason Blake is playing.
I don’t see why we trade our starter for nothing (which is what is implied). He starts for good reason, and he gets minutes for good reason.
Let's trade these mediocre players....
and play the players who can’t beat out these mediocre players. Yea thats makes sense.
BTW Blake isn’t the guy that’s standing in front of Rudy. It’s Roy.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
I think Roy is standing BESIDE Rudy.
Rudy is better without the ball than Roy and vice versa. Can you not see the beauty of this???
You've convinced me to trade Blake
I’m absolutely sure we can get one of these players as our PG to start with Roy.
Player A – 3-pt shooting 40.0% this year, 40.6% last year – 4.9 3-pt attempts/36 minutes, 3.9 assists/TO this year
Player B – 3-pt shooting 27.8% this year, 29.3% last year – 4.9 3-pt attempts/36 minutes, 4.1 assists/TO this year
Which PG do you want to play with Roy?
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Nov 18, 2008 4:50 PM PST reply actions
I want some combination of Rudy/Roy/Sergio/Bayless playing point.
And that is my point. So many of us feel we don’t need/want a traditional PG in the backcourt with Roy, why have TWO? (Blake, Sergio) Start Rudy and Roy at guard, bring Sergio off the bench for meaningful stretches and use Bayless to fill the gaps at both the 1 and 2. BTW, not trying to convince anyone of anything, just airing my inner thoughts about a team that I love on a site that I love. All in good fun. Book it.
28.6% career 3-pt shooter
Why would even want him playing backup PG?
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Nov 18, 2008 5:04 PM PST up reply actions
Because his poor shooting is due to a fixable habit, not a deficiency in talent
by JordanLeDoux on Nov 18, 2008 5:07 PM PST up reply actions
What fixable habit? Is he shooting with his eyes closed?
by BlazerFanSince1970 on Nov 18, 2008 5:11 PM PST up reply actions
He is shooting with no arc, which comes from the timing of his release
by JordanLeDoux on Nov 18, 2008 5:14 PM PST up reply actions
So let him sit on the bench until he learns to shoot

Even though Sergio's shots are flat, at least they hit the rim
I’m looking at you Bayless…

Sergio is NEVER going to be a 3 point shooter...
………………. He’s starting to figure that out and not hoisting as many clankers though.
Let me reiterate — he is a GREAT passer.
As for Rex, hey, let him play during something other than donkey garbagetime and THEN talk trash about him. You’ll see.

Momentum
I think Sergio’s shooting would improve in drastic fashion if we showed the confidence in him to start him. I think of Sergio as being a guy that will distribute mostly, but will catch fire enough to keep defenders honest. Blake will usually be Blake. Not a game changer for better or worse. If it turns out Rudy/Sergio/Bayless is a change for the worst, we continue to look for our starter through a trade or free agency.
there is a reason you hate to say it
the reason is that saying it is wrong.
and trading Blake is wrong. premature. don’t touch this roster. we’re doing fine. really we are. no more roster moves till next year.
We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.
Blake isnt sitting on the bench unless we trade for an upgrade at PG this year.
He is easily the best true PG on the team. Sergio is improving, yes, but he still makes the same bone-headed plays that kill our momentum. Early 3 pointers before the offense is set, dribbling right into the trap, driving to the bucket looking only to pass and turning it over. Remember the PG sets the tone of the offense, so it’s not like when LMA has a bad night and you have a hole at one position. When the PG play is weak the offense as a whole suffers. It’s not just Nate either that don’t have full confidence in Sergio. You can see a swagger and confidence in the rest of the team when Blake is out there. I’m not saying Blake is our perfect PG, just easily our best and most effective right now. I hope Sergio gets better and makes this discussion more relevant though.
Yeah, marbury's standing up for michael vick's dogfighting
and trying to inform white america that it’s a legit, normal activity of black culture will fit right in here. Also his private jet will inspire our young players to " step their gaaaame up!"
Lock the thread, it's settled!!!
Yes…Trade Blake…
…Get Marbury

Blake stays.
He has a great game and makes all the other players better when he is in. Steve Blake He epitomizes what the Trail Blazers are doing; Young, works hard, smart, brings it every night. I hope he plays his whole career with the Blazers and becomes a coach with the Blazers at the end of his playing career which I believe is a long way off. Steve Blake has continued to get better every year through hard work. He could shoot more as far as I am concerned, but because he is selfless and trys to do what is best for the team he defers to other players. This is a great asset. Steve Blake is a PG who can take us deep into the playoffs. If he continues to improve, he could be the PG who helps the Blazers bring home the hardware.
I could be wrong now. But I don't think so!
