Junk Drawer - 11/18: What happened to Friday Night Lights?
FNL was a show I tried to catch every week for the past two seasons. I felt it had a lot of interesting story lines coming out of the simple premise of a small town Texas high school football team. It was my understanding that it was picked up again this season. In fact one of my coworkers said that her nephew got the part as the new quarterback.
In a related question - would you consider it a disadvantage or advantage to have a series that dealt with high school students, knowing that at some point you would have to bring in a new group of actors and risk losing your audience when their favorite character "graduated" from the show?
Other shows I like to watch:
Chuck
The Unit
Primeavil
Survivor
Heroes (thought not as much as last season)
Lost (if I can get caught back up).

Friday Night Lights
It was canceled by the network (wasn’t it on NBC?)..but picked up by DirecTV’s channel T101. New episodes air on that channel now.
This season of Survivor is the first one I’ve totally missed in forever. I’ve been a pretty loyal viewer (except for the previous Africa season..I only watched parts of that.)
A couple of my faves:
The Office (both versions)
Top Gear (British car show that is HILARIOUS)
The Amazing Race (but need to catch up on Tivo’d episodes)
You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your friend's nose.

My understanding...
is that NBC will still be airing it. It’s due to premiere sometime in the next few weeks I believe.
For whatever reason they also put it on DirectTV as a regular series. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t start them both at the same time.

You are right
NBC still owns the show but direct TV agreed to absorb some of the cost of production and got to air the season before NBC does. I heard NBC will be airing this season starting in February. If you are interested in seeing the shows prior to that but not so interested in getting direct TV you can go here:

The picture is a little blurry at times but I find if you just pretend you are just watching it on Comcast sports net it doesn’t seem so bad.

Hells Kitchen
Chef Ramsey is my new favorite super-hero. If I could meet one person, he’d be at the top of my list.
Now, on to the important things at hand, namely the MSP non-repentant attitude. Hopefully another boycott the show thread will appear and add more pressure for them to take some accountability to heart.
Lastly, just for the Junk Drawers sake, Did you know…
… that today is the birthday of Calvin & Hobbes? Bill
Watterson’s wonderful cartoon strip about the 6-year-old boy
Calvin and his tiger sidekick, Hobbes, first appeared in print
on November 18, 1985. It was a sad day when Watterson ceased
writing the strip for newspapers on December 31, 1995.
Celebrate by smiling at the next child you see. :-)

I like that one as well. But then I like most cooking shows.
I could never understand why people get upset over being yelled at.
Reminds me of what one of my nephews said. It was during his orientation week at West Point. He said the most difficult part for him was trying to keep from smiling whenever an upper classman was yelling in his face. He felt they were amaturers compared to his dad.

I love Calvin and Hobbes.
I got Terry Porter to autograph the inside of my C & H book when I was a kid. He chuckled as he signed it.
I hate those stupid Calvin stickers that everybody and their mom puts on their cars… you know, the one where he’s peeing? Get over it already, people!

I heard that those stickers
are actually the reason that Bill Watterson stopped writing the strip. For whatever reason, that image of Calvin was not his intellectual property and tons of companies were basically just piggybacking on his work and making money. For shame, as he is one of the very greatest cartoonists of all time.

I think Watterson quit
mostly because he felt the art form had become somewhat marginalized (he writes about this a bit in some of his books, mostly the 10th anniversary book I believe). He never gave merchandise rights to anyone so those stickers didn’t make him happy I’m sure, but it was likely more a drop in the bucket than the sole instigator of his retirement.
by DrivetheLane on Nov 18, 2008 1:11 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
His art was controlled mainly by the papers he worked for
and he thought it would be best to leave it alone rather than compromise his work. However the peeing calvin did also have an effect.

I don't get either one of those things from the (very long) Wikipedia article you cite...
………………………… The strip was distributed by Universal Press Syndicate; editors each obviously control the content of their papers; and all variants of peeing Calvin are bootlegs which did not have any impact on Watterson’s decision to stop drawing the strip.
Because of Watterson’s strong anti-merchandising stance and his reluctance to return to the spotlight, almost no legitimate Calvin and Hobbes merchandise exists outside of the book collections. However, the strip’s immense popularity has led to the appearance of various counterfeit items such as window decals and T-shirts that often feature crude humor, religion, binge drinking and other themes that are not found in Watterson’s work.

That’s right. You guessed it.
BASKETBALL GAMES
Everything else on tv is just plain junk. (I guess that’s why folks are talking about it in the junk drawer.)
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
According to James Kunstler, who writes a well-respected if slightly profane financial blog whose title I cannot repeat here, "The Republicans must be clearly identified as the party that wrecked America... it's hard to imagine the American people giving the clean-up task to the very group that created the mess -- no matter how many cute little faces Sarah Palin can make on TV."

I used to be a diehard Simpsons/Futurama viewer, now I watch The Daily Show and Colbert and The Office (though I’m losing interest to some degree), plus I occasionally tune in to Late Night w/ Conan, or one of the MSNBC liberal propaganda shows (I prefer Rachel Maddow to Keith Olbermann).

there weren't a lot of
obvious choices in the AL this year. Personally, I thought K-Rod should have won it. But a pitcher winning MVP is nearly impossible. If Hamilton had kept up his production after the All Star break, I think he would have been a lock.
by DrivetheLane on Nov 18, 2008 1:09 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Closers should never, ever, ever
win the MVP. Ever. Also, K-Rod wasn’t even the best closer this year— that was Rivera.
The best player in the AL this year, by a healthy margin, was Grady Sizemore. Alex Rodriguez is also a vastly superior baseball player to Dustin Pedroia.
There have been worse picks than this (and choosing Pedroia for AL MVP is better than the few schmucks who voted for Ryan Howard as NL MVP) but still…

My argument for K-Rod
is that he saved 62 games. 62….think about that. He demolished the saves record. And in a year when AL offensive numbers were down and no one player carried a winning team (even Pedroia got great help from Youk) then K-Rod is just as good a candidate as anyone else. If Pedroia was in the NL, he doesn’t sniff the MVP. Even among just middle infielders, Hanley Ramirez and Chase Utley would both be better candidates.
Before I said Josh Hamilton, but really, Carlos Quentin would have won if he’d played the whole season.

Getting 62 saves is largely dependent
on getting a lot of save opportunities. If you went back and tracked the number of save oppourtunites (and I haven’t done this) you will likely find that K-Rod had way more chances for saves than anyone ever has.

+1
Saves is an arbitrary, meaningless stat. Stats that actually show how good a pitcher is (ERA, WHIP or better yet sabermetric stats like FIP) show that he was a very good closer, but not the best… and nowhere near deserving of the MVP.

i have been humbled.
as a fairly avid baseball fan, I should have made myself more well informed. I had no idea how the rest of those stats stacked up for the top 5 relievers in saves. Rivera was clearly better. My bad.
I don’t think saves are meaningless stats though. It’s pretty evident not everyone could be a closer and also that when closers are in non-save situations they aren’t as effective. You’ve got to have a stat that gives credit to the guys who end games.

I have no problem with keeping track of saves
I just think its a terrible way to evaluate how good a player is.

A question about stats
I think if I do game day threads, that I can catch Dave this year in comments. My problem is that it is hard to pay attention to the game and the comments, so I only hit the thread during commercial breaks. What should I do?
by tominhawaii on Nov 18, 2008 1:08 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
start posting like timbo.
one word per comment so 6 comments make up your sentence. that could work.

Actually, if you really look at the open threads, I probably have a higher average word count per post than 3/4 of the crew...

In answer to Mr. Bahamas' tongue-in-cheek query to Dear Abby, the way you do it is sit with a laptop on your lap typing as fast as you can and then you go back and read what other people say and recomment during breaks in the action.

Who needs BE when you can watch the game?
It’s great for all the games I can’t watch from up here. Particularly when I can get recommended links to catch it on streaming video. But when it is on tv and I can sit in my living room with a beer or bottle of wine, nothing else is needed.
Well, one other thing comes to mind. But if I ask my wife for one, she’ll have this unreasonable expectation that I will take time out from the game and see to her pleasure.

I'm sure you do.
I don’t look at the open threads much (home computer too slow, plus I’m watching the game). I was just joking. And Sergio has been playing quite well. The turnovers have gone way way down. Watching him try to run a high pick and roll with Travis is pretty brutal though. yikes.

The Timbo idea and your idea are the best so far. I need about 3,400 comments to catch Dave.

You could comment in other teams gameday threads
I do it for the Mavs, and once or twice for the Pacers. You could do it for the Bulls, and don’t need to focus that hard on the action there. Though of course that doesn’t boost your BE stats, only your overall SBN stats :)

I'm trying to write a preview to the Chicago game and I don't know jack about that team except the fans want to trade everyone but Deng and Rose.

There must be some kind of circus in Chi-town, since they have circus polls on Blogabull
But I fear they don’t mean the Bulls with that.
As for the trading, if that’s the most important worry of the team it should be in the preview. Apparently the only member of the Bulls who is safe is Benny The Bull, because he is on the marketing material and the players are not.
by Norsktroll on Nov 18, 2008 2:24 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
There actually is a circus in Chi-town
it comes every year and during that time the Bulls go on an extended road trip, similar to what the Spurs do when the rodeo comes to town.
by tingeyga on Nov 18, 2008 2:33 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
This year the Lakers and Clippers have the World Figure Skating Championship in the Staples Center that sends them on a trip
Good times. The Bulls are notoriously losing on their circus road trips, and that’s what apparently the polls are about.

Chuck
is the best hour comedy on television. It comes in close behind The Office (which is fading) and How I Met Your Mother (I think it’s getting better after falling a little) for overall best comedy.
