Rose Garden description
Unfortunately i do not live in Oregon (or the US for that matter) so i do not have the opportunity as some of you do, of catching a blazers game live in person.
I have seen pics of the place, just want a more personal idea of what games are like there, i know sellouts are the norm these days :)
Videos and pics do not always do the place justice, especially during pre game introductions

I think I'm going to Wednesday's game against Chicago...
when they unveil Mr. Oden to the home crowd for the first time (YES!!!). It’ll be my first game of the year.
If I do end up going, I will surely let you know my experience.

Really loud.. A better description
Portland for a long time was known as one of the loudest buildings in the NBA. I’m not sure if we still are, but this place gets rowdy and amazing loud. Sideburns stand-on-end loud!! The atmosphere is great and the people are generally a nice crowd to be around. I couldnt imagine the Portland crowd ever being as violent as we all remember the artest fight in Detroit went.
If you ever get a chance to come, do it!!!

In terms of seating, it is pretty typical for NBA arenas
it is right in that 19-20 thousand (give or take a couple hundred seats) range that almost all NBA arenas have

You're right, you have no idea unless you're there
T.V. just can’t portray what the experience is like. The Rose Garden is known as one of the loudest, if not the loudest arena in the entire NBA. Arco Arena in Sacramento was also well known for this, but not anymore since the Kings are in a recession. Not to mention how nice the place is! It’s only 13 years old, so it’s still a newer arena. It’s one of the largest capacity NBA arenas and the jumbotron and sound system are new and state-of-the-art. I personally never knew anything other than the Rose Garden (excluding the days of the Memorial Coliseum, that place really isn’t an NBA-worthy building by today’s standards), until last year when a friend and I decided to drive up to Seattle and catch a Blazers away game. My friend, I felt like I was at a minor league sporting event. The concourse was lifeless, old, small, and there wasn’t really much energy among the fans. I realize that KeyArena in Seattle is a bit outdated, and the Sonics were really bad, but there just wasn’t the enthusiasm and electricity that I was used to in the Rose Garden. It was just a totally different atmosphere. I celebrated a Blazers’ basket during that game and was given the stink-eye from an arena attendant, a gesture as if to say “whoa whoa, settle down, we don’t really do that here…” I usually return home after Blazers games with a lost voice, due to cheering and trying to yell at whoever I went with every time I have to say something. I have a video up on YouTube that I took a few years ago when Kobe missed a game winning 3 (after Rasheed nailed a 3 with a few seconds left in the game assisted by Stoudamire to take the 2 point lead). It was so loud and electric in there that words cannot describe. Those days were all sellouts so every seat was filled all the way up to the top. In that video I was in the Blazer Boxes, about as far away as you can get. Everybody was on their feet and the sound was deafening when Kobe missed. There is an intangible feeling that just can’t be described. In the past few years it hasn’t seemed as lively, the nosebleed seats were lonely and it just wasn’t as crazy as it had been. Until I went to the season opener last year. It was the first sellout I had been to in years. The seats were once again filled with Blazer family up to the rafters. The feeling was back. It is indescribable my friend. I can honestly say that attending a good sellout game at the Rose Garden is they best experiences of my life. Rip City forever!

you can hear the roar on game night as you walk/ride max across the steel bridge
there is a quiet murmur , excited kids jumping up and down and grumbling and shuffling as everyone files into the stadium. No violent outbursts or angry patrons, even if someone cuts you . Loud beeps echo in the entry hallway as the staff happily checks purses /backpacks and bags while scanning the ticket stubs and clicking marks the entry of every fan to the Rose Garden.
The Cheering, OOOHHHHHh AAAAAAAAAAAHhhhhhh
YYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Starts with replays of last year’s and this year’s awesome highlights and the game clock shows 26 minutes untill tip off.
Most people are at their seat by the National Anthem. The RG staff has done well this year so far in hiring seriously good performers for the Anthem and cheering drowns out the singer/musicplayer by the last note.
At introductions everyone is in their spot, standing and screaming and cheering. The place is rocking at this point. Things get loudest as
" 6 foot 6 , from the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON, shooting guard BBBBRRRANNNDDDONNNNNNN RRRRRRROOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYY!!! " booms over the speaker system and the team huddles at half court. The cheering continues untill the tip and things settle for a while untill the team gets into the groove.
There is a crescendo in cheering and uproarus atmosphere that goes something like this: During the a typical game, the croud is cheering for a bucket, then a defensive stop happens and half the place gets on it’s feet and the cheering is more prominent. 1/3 of the players on our bench stand up then and Roy or LMA or Travis hits a tough shot the place erupts . Everyone stands and screams
“defense " Clap clap " defense” clap clap " de fense" clap clap
ROOOOAAAAARRRRRRRRR when the shot is missed or Joel blocks the shot.
The entire Bench is up and yelling too. Nate is running up and down the sideline with his blazer unbuttoned and the croud is clapping to some corny song and singing along shamelessly . The Scoreboard shows the crazy dancing lady who has no moves but is great none-the-less, funny signs, the guy w/ the fro and then some random kids dancing w/ no rythm and loving seein themselves on the board while they gleefully clap and point.
Then the cheerleaders/dancers do a strip dance number and usually people calm down after that and the game continues.
During the fourth quarter, the upper part of the arena is all on their feet. The yelling is sustained and only gets louder w/ each great play
The sound is actually defening at times. It ‘s almost indescribable . The state of the art sound management system is pretty effective but when we say it’s loud its LOUD.
The facility itself if very nice. There are several places to get good alcohol and the lines at all the merchandise stands go pretty quickly. The restrooms could get some more toilets and sinks w/ mirrors but Im a girl and women’s bathroom lines are notoriously slow . The place is clean and the staff is nice and there are tons of people to ask if one needs help or is lost.
The Fans make it though. I wouldn’t consider myself to be a terribly open or “kind” person. I guess im just introverted or something but when Im at the RG and something awesome happens im hugging the old guy i sit next too (he brought me binoc’s to see Batum lol) or high fiving the dood down a couple seats and yelling and being really happy. Everyone is like that there. Everyone is generally happy and joyful . Unless we are playing the Lakers. THose games are agressive for the fans and for the players. Its screaming and yelling the whole time.
Its awesome in the RG , I highly reccommend getting here for a game or two . Laker games are the best.

You can always hit me up for tickets
I have season tickets that I can only use 8 of due to living in another state. My tickets usually sell the day before the game, thus risking heart attack until the last minute when they’re snagged up. (tickets are expensive and my hope was to resell and make up the cash, have my season tickets locked in because I don’t know that any will be available next year, and have my play-off/finals tickets locked in because THOSE tickets are hard to get.

Great description of the atmosphere
We should do a rating and comments about all the arenas in the NBA one day. Obviously the Rose Garden would win (at least here, but I guess even neutral fans would rate it high up).
Example: In the summer I was at the Banknorth Garden in Boston at draft day, and that place was so ugly. Bad neighborhood, no fans around, horrible building (hello World Champions, draft not important enough anymore?). I ended up driving to the other end of town to Fenway Park, went to a sports bar there, and watched us picking B-Rex together with some expatriate Bulls fans. Ended up being a funny evening.

wow 25 rec's!? Was this post about opening night or just any night in general?
Ok, so riding across the Steele bridge has been a tradition of mine for years now. How did you like the Post Game walk back? Wasn’t it euphoric!?
What about meeting an usher named Rudy and shaking Coach Nate’s hand upon entering our home away from house?
How about the old folks behind us who were leary to high five me at first, but after a few emphatic dunks, seemed a bit more in the mood.
My absolute favorite part, eveytime we hoist up a shot, you either grab the railing, or my leg, and clench down with the force of a thousand mighty steads, when we make that shot, you stand up out of your seat (almost everytime, remember you got told to sit down once!) and jump around like a giddy school girl!
Gosh I love that gal! The ol miss rose garden and sophia both!

Smart Fans, Bad PA, Awesome Video, Creepy Kids, Interesting Press Row
- The fans are loud, but just as importantly, knowledgeable. Loud at the right time for the right reasons. In many arenas, chants of ‘De-Fense’ happen only at the encouragement from the jumbotron. In the Rose Garden, chants of De-Fense will arise en masse not only without prompting, but often counter to what the PA is doing. Which brings me to:
- the in-game PA is pretty bad, and often out of sync with what’s happening on the court. Too often bad music interferes with crowd’s own intent to cheer De-Fense. When we have the ball, most noticeable on key possessions when we really need a score, there is just incongruent, awful, distracting music. Sometimes I just want to hear sneakers and grunts.
However:
- the in-game video is spectacular for two reasons. One, I assume we have the largest 4 sided HD video jumbotron in all sports (just installed prior to last season). It is enormous and beautiful. Secondly, our video crew is really good- better than whoever is directing for Television. TV direction tends to dumb down it’s live direction (safe wide angles, and cut aways to whomever just scored regardless of where the ball is in transition), and is extremely slow and often off the mark with replays. With the in-game video direction, you get a lot of nice, smart camera angles, and fast cutting. The replays are practically instantaneous- you’re watching the replay of a block on one end, while simultaneously seeing the resulting dunk on the other end. The Garden video crew are obviously hoops junkies. This adds a TON of value to the live game experience.
- all the stuff during timeouts, etc is pretty silly but i understand that they are cultivating a family experience. I could do without the Blazer Jr Dancers- creepy.
- side note: my friends and I scored seat upgrades for the Rockets game and sat behind the press. immediately behind them. I could slap wheels on the back. Quick, Freeman, Lance U, & Meagher right in front of me as well. And my favorites for that night: Ric Bucher and Hollinger, both of whom I could not resist heckling.
Observations-
Quick and Freeman both take oddly diligent, border line OCD notes on legal pads with red pens. Of all the writers, Quick was the most animated, which isn’t saying much as everyone looked stoic if not disinterested. But Quick didn’t hide his displeasure at poor play.
Antonio nearly jumped out of his headset when Yao scored with .08 left.
Meagher NEVER stopped typing. He’s the Rain Man of press row- his head visibly following the ball as if hypnotized, while his fingers pound out 120 words a minute.
Hollinger and Bucher. Neither took a single note the entire game. Hollinger surfed the internet on a crappy PC, and Bucher didn’t even have a pen and paper. Both perked up during the Blazers Dancers. They both got out of their chairs at the Yao shot, and seemed to think better of it just before sharing an awkward half hug. They were equally full of excited restraint when Roy hit the 30 footer. As we filed out, I told Bucher to go back to Bristol and tell ’em the Blazers are comin. Best I could tell, he was mildly amused.

except
the crowd drowned out the stupid music during opening night. It was chanting defense on it’s own accord and the sound people actually started working with the crowd instead of fighting it. I’m hoping that’s been true of every game this year, but I’ll see when next i’m back.
Last year… yeah, you could hear the sneakers.
This year’s opener… I don’t think you could of. I don’t remember that the crowd ever got that quiet!

The Garden Filled to capacity is a sight to behold….
But the garden filled to capacity during a playoff series….PRICELESS!
Just ask Karl Malone :)
it’s …..Undescribable….and that’s the truth…we could try..but it will never do it justice.
but here’s my the semi best I can do without spending a week on it…..
It’s like for a few short hours you ARE a child again…..nothing you say, nothing you do, nothing that happens really matters it’s a moment of peace, with a touch of chaos, and a whole lot of passion.
The second you walk onto that honored ground, you walk past the collesium, past the flames, and through the doors…you know you were ment to be there on that day….. a feeling takes over…you’re not yourself….that second you stomp through that door,…YOU’RE A TRAILBLAZER!!!…and that is a great feeling….
You’re there for a reason…and that reason is to be loud! it’s fun!
anyway, do what you can to get there….it’d be kinda like our mecca….at least once in your life…..becuase it’s worth it!
really undescribeable…but….that’s my take at it.

The noise of the crowd during the playoffs
is so uplifting, so unreal that it can’t really be imagined without being there. It’s all your happy thoughts and feelings being reflected back to you as if run through a rock concert sound system. It is a bath of unity that insulates you from any bad feelings you may have brought in with you.
I agree that it is difficult to describe, but I took my futile shot, adding to your fine but similarly futile attempts.

Any fear of heights?
Just something that I haven’t seen anyone else mentioned… I’ll write it out in story form. :)
Last year I took my nephew, brother, and fiance to the Nuggets game in December. What a game. We were right behind one of the endlines, a few rows up. The crowd was crazy loud, but not so much that you needed earplugs (though I bet the Nuggets players disagreed! The sound is engineered to filter to the players on the court). The fiance is not a big basketball fan, but had a great time. By the time Travis blocked Linus’s shot, she was yelling. She’s still not a basketball fan, but is pretty well up on the Blazers these days.
So we were in town for this preseason, and went to the Utah game. This is also known as the game where Nate sat a bunch of healthy players (against Utah’s starters) and gave us the most boring game in recorded history… but everyone saw Batum’s potential for the first time.
Instead of floor seats, the best available were in the upper deck. My wife was terrified the entire time. As part of the engineering (for both sound and view), it gets steeper the higher you get. If you don’t like heights, the upper deck will be a bit freaky. The steps are steep and the drop feels huge.
Plus the usher stood in front of the Blazer basket for the whole second half. We didn’t care as much when it was the Utah bucket. :)
So if you can get lower section tickets, jump on it. It’s the best way to watch a game. Sophia is right about the atmosphere there. My wife is fully aware that if we lived in Portland, we’d have season tickets and never miss a game.

I'd love to see how St*ples Center compares
I’m going to college here and couldn’t get tickets to either Blazers game against the L*kers. They were up on StubHub for ridiculously high prices. I guess in LA everyone just buys them to turn around and sell them. I have seen the outside and it looks pretty fancy. I doubt it has the energy and noise that the RG has even though it’s in the middle of LA, because from what I’ve seen so far around here most people are bandwagoners instead of passionate fans. We always joked about all the cell phone usage and celebrity presence at St*ples, but the games seem to be more of this novelty, entertainment event. Of course I guess that’s not a bad thing and it’s not true for everyone, but it definitely is different here. L.A. has also always had a really hard time in the RG and I’m sure Kobe and Phil would be the first to tell you that there are many buildings they would rather play in than the RG.

I got tickets to one of last years games at Staples Center
My brother and I went to the game in our blazer’s jerseys. He is in his Roy and me in my Aldridge. I got tickets in the 100 level about 40 feet back from the court (they were expensive, but it was worth it to sit that close). First let me describe the place:
They have two or three levels of boxes, as opposed to the one level at the RG, and they sit right on top of each other. This has the effect of making the upper level seem like it is right on top of the court. I didn’t want go up there, but i would assume that it is even steeper than the RG. This is also were most of the actual fans sit. During the game, they turn off all the lights except for the ones over the court. On TV it looks like the place is pitch-black, but in reality you can see all around the arena when you are there.
I was sitting on the far side of the court from Jack and Sandler, but it was crazy looking around and realizing you are surrounded by people you see on tv and movies. And it’s true that they are inferior fans. There was only one passionate fan in my section, and he happened to be sitting next to me with his way to attractive girlfriend. This was the first game last year at the Staples when Roy sat out and we still almost won.
Everytime Kobe does anything good the whole upper bowl starts chanting “MVP”, and my brother and I found this obnoxious, so when ever Kobe messed up, like when Travis picked his pocket and had the fast break dunk (link to follow) my brother and I started chanting “MVP”. People were getting annoyed, but the guy next to me was the only one really giving me any crap. We lead most of the first half, and the crowd was completely out of it.
In the second half, Kobe started to heat up and fans started to get into it again. Vujacic also started to light it up from downtown. Kobe had when play in the second half where he was on a fastbreak and just jumped backwards into Blake to get the And 1. I was a little tipsy at this point, forgot where I was, and stood up and yelled really loud “Kobe is a B17c4!” This time i got a reaction out of the crowd around me. They turned around and looked at me like i had defiled the sun god of chichen Itza. I mumbled “my bad”, but totally felt justified in my verbal assault.
We ended up losing the game (if only we had had Roy that game), but it was a lot of fun to take a little of that RG spirit and bring it to the unsuspecting denizens of tinsel town. Basically, the RG is infinitely greater than the Staples Center as far as homecourt advantage and crowd spirit.
One interesting side note, there was a 14 year old boy sitting one row up and three seats over, who was wearing an old school blazers jacket (i’m talking early nineties, shiny with the lower case blazers on the back, in red and black. you know the one), anyways, I’m convinced that this was in fact Mortimer. He was shocked to see others in PTB regalia. And he seemed wise beyond his years

I am not sure what that image is of but...
here is a link to the Wikipedia page for the old Memorial Coliseum. There is even a fairly decent picture of it. I went to hundreds of events there over the last 40 years. Many great memories. But the Rose Garden is MUCH better.

that is a weird scale
Timmay’s wife would flip out if it were really that steep in the lower bowl, much less the upper.

My brother has season tix to the Wizards
He came out to Portland last year during The Streak and we caught the game against the Nuggets. A lot of people read the paper or bring a book to read during timeouts during Wizards games according to my brohan. He was totally blown away at how loud and engaged fans were throughout the game.
If anyone attended a game during The Streak last year knows how loud it gets in there, especially for a non playoff game. Let’s hope the real fans don’t get priced out like in Golden State and Boston. Those crowds were nuts back in the day.

I gotta say I drive past the thing twice daily and it's hideous to look at, BUT...
inside the bowl is pretty nice and our fans are louder and more enthusiastic than most.

One of the greatest experiences of my life
was opening night this year against the Spurs. I had been to Blazer games before, even have sat courtside during last years 13 game streak, but nothing compared to that game. It was 12 of us BEdgers up in the 300’s. The place was deafening, RUDY, RUDY, RUDY… DE-FENSE… CLAP CLAP, CLAP CLAP CLAP, CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP LET"S GO! Man it was awesome. At the end when Horry missed the game winner the place EXPLODED!!! On the way out complete strangers were high fiving, chanting Rudy, Rip City, it was NUTS! Then on the way to the car, it felt like we had one a playoff game, everyone was chanting and hooting and hollering, what an experience. Get to a game ASAP! There aren’t words that can describe the feeling of being a part of this Blazer team, RIP CITY BABY!!!
G.O. for R.O.Y.

Andy tells you what he thinks about the Garden of Roses
Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name! Or at least acts like they do during timeouts. The place where we high five total strangers on Oden’s 1st home-block in Portland tomorrow night. Where we come to share an experience with 20,000 strangers/friends. Coming to a game at the garden is the highlight of my day, or in this case, week. It is a state of mind, a mind not hindered by thoughts of the outside world. It could be pouring down outside, but it’s raining three’s in here. Going there is my life. It’s my date night, if I were to ever get so lucky again. It’s my boy’s night out, for those nights I cannot procure female company. It’s my expendable income’s favorite way to be spent. It’s why I pre-funk. It’s where I choose not to pay $8 for libations and instead soak up the sights and sounds of 6 dancing blazer fans from section 324.
I think the Gorillaz put it best in their song "Fire Coming out of a Monkey’s Head.
And then came a sound. Distant first, it grew into catrophany so immense it could be heard far away in space.
There were no screams. There was no time.
The mountain called Oden had spoken.
There was only fire.
And then, nothing. (Except a Deafening Roar)
O little town in U.S.A, your time has come to see
There’s nothing you believe you want (more then an NBA championship)
But where were you when it all came down on me? (At the Rose Garden)
Did you call me now? (No, it was last night, asking if you wanted to go to Wednesday’s Game!)
I can’t wait for the game tomorrow so I can get my fix, I’m a Rose (insert corporate sponsor here) Garden-o-holic, and I’m always glad I came.

Hey Beautiful! (looking at myself in a mirror again...)
Sophia! Was your fantastic account above about opening night? I loved it, if I had more time at work today I would of have wrote a more detailed report of how amazing it was to be with you. The best part, was as the final horn sounded, and the streamers fell from the ceiling, you too fell into my arms and fainted, and did I fall into the old man with the Binoculars’ arms, and so on and so on all the way down the Garden to where finally KP fell into Paul Allen!
You coming tomorrow? or want to plan on a game the last week of Nov?
