Quarrel between Sergio and B-Rex.
http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/baloncesto/nba/es/desarrollo/1184716.html
This is the most important newspaper in Spain (about sports), and it says that Nate had to finish practise because of a hard foul of bayless to Sergio. The source says that it was a 3x3 match, and they were all the time playing hard... (too hard). Nate said "We have to control their tempers, they cannot go out of control". Moreover it says that Ike Diogu and Oden had an argument too.
Don't know if it has been posted, iI haven't seen it. (Sorry about the vocabulary)

It didn't say that
Ike and Oden had an argument. It said that Ike got frustrated playing against Oden (because he is so gigantic and impossible to guard). It said the threw the ball at the backboard in frustration. I don’t think there were any hard feelings there.
"I like blocks," Fernandez said.

And the newspaper says that Greg and Ike
also had friction, which Joelor was explaining the extent of to you.

Quick has the same story, so apparently there was a hard foul that ended practice
by Norsktroll on Nov 17, 2008 12:04 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
That's not entirely true
Practice was about to end anyway, as the game of 3-on-3 was taking place while other guys were cooling down on the other end of the floor. Nate called the all the players to the middle of the floor, ending practice as he usually does. After that, the guys who were playing 3-on-3 wanted to continue playing, and it was then that Monty put a stop to it. So while it’s true that some of the guys wanted to keep going at it, practice would have ended regardless.

It sounds like one of those things that's not even an afterthought if you're the one playing
but means something to fans for some reason. I love that Sergio and Bayless play like that and want to keep going. It shows they’re having fun while being challenged. Monty stopping them sounds like it was designed not to stop a fight, but because they were going to stop anyway, and because they’d stay hungry.
It’s awesome that you post here still. I go read your site all the time, but I love it when you interject with the realzness

I don't think Bayless going
hard at Sergio is going to earn him playing time. Sergio’s been playing so well that Bayless is just gonna have to wait for Sergio to screw up pretty bad for an extended stretch. The upsdie to Bayless’s hard play in practice, however, is that it will make Sergio that much better. In a way, perhaps Bayless is hurting his chances by toughening Sergio up.

it's true
There is no question that Sergio is playing tougher and with more aggression off the ball and on D this season, some of that must correlate to the fire and physical play bayless is bringing to practice.

This is a leap my Marca
I was there when this game of 3 on 3 was taking place along with Quick, PR Flack Jim Taylor, Bob the security guy and the rest of the team. No one else was there, especially not someone from Marca.com. So this is someone reading Quick’s post then extrapolating, which, in my opinion, is unethical.
It was nothing more than three guys wanting to win and fouling probably a little too hard in order to do so. No words were exchanged. Do Bayless and Diogu get frustrated about not playing? Probably, but they know it’s the decision of the coaches, not the guys who are getting the minutes.

I think Lance Uppercut works for Marca
He studied abroad there (or studied a broad there perhaps :) in college and now is a closeted Sergio homer.
Jim Taylor is a flack and wouldn’t care. The security guy was probably eating donuts. And Quick wouldn’t want to give up the story to Marca.
Therefore, it must have been Lance U., aka The U.
Did I just extrapolate my theory from the evidence? Maybe I’m Marca… hmmm.

I worry about Bayless's demeanor long term...
It sort of seems like he needs to calm down a bit. I don’t mind the competitive nature he has, but it seems to come off in an arrogant, jerky kind of way. Hard fouls on teammates during a 3vs3 pickup game seems kind of unnecessary. I am probably off base with my assumption that Bayless is sort of just a jerk, but from the little I have seen of him, he struck me that way. He is just a youngster though…

ya
he’s struck me the same way. I don’t have a problem with him being the way he is as long as he doesn’t cross the line. Theres nothing wrong with playing hard and agressively…but in the end these are your teammates. I know its not a fair assessment, but from the way bayless carries himself and the way he plays, it seems as if hes more concerned with himself rather than his teammates.

Bayless v The World
I’m not sure why Bayless is getting a bad rap, but I don’t blame him at all. The guy was projected to be a top 5 pick, ended up going 11th, and can’t get ANY minutes on the floor. Most of the other top draft picks are at least getting some garbage time, while Bayless continues to ride the pine. Hopefully the Trail Blazers will blow some teams out pretty soon so JB can get on the floor. The guy has played a total of 21 minutes in the first 10 games of the season.

There have been really no garbage minutes....
except for the first game. If we can start putting teams away earlier, then Bayless will surely get more time.
by JasonT on Nov 18, 2008 7:08 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
This Stage is Already Set.
Sergio made a demand via his Spanish Agent. And, did not back off later. The bottom line is that Sergio wants minutes, and his game is better suited to a running game than Mac’s 1/2 court offense. At the same time, if he doesn’t get those minutes, he wants to be traded. This guarantees that the Blazers cannot develop Bayless – however one feels about him, as long as Sergio is on the team.
Something will have to give. If you want to see Bayless develop, then Sergio will never be happy sharing what playing time he is getting with Bayless. And that’s Sergio’s position – not the Blazers.
My take is that Sergio will get his wish. KP commented that he’s under no pressure, and that the way Serio’s Spanish Agent approached this issue is not “how things are done” in the NBA. However, later, he also commented that if the “right deal” came along, he would do something. He’s just too shrewd to “shop” a player, because that reduces the player’s value. As he said, the other teams know Sergio’s skills, and he’ll see what develops.
by Eben Calder on Nov 18, 2008 6:10 AM PST reply actions 1 recs
Exactly right.
……………………….. Sergio is making less than a million bucks (=NBA peanuts) and just got team-extended for another year. It’s totally cost free to keep him around. His assists numbers this year have already increased his trade value from essentially zero to a decent ancillary piece. At some point Marty will be back and then it will be time to make the big call Marty/Travis/Nic — pick 2.
If KP decides to go for an experienced PG at this time, then Sergio becomes very expendable as a toss-in player (the team still having Blake as an “experienced backup”). Or, if KP is REALLY liking the guy he gets, maybe he cuts the cord with Rex (also known as the Jermaine O’Neal II Scenario) — since Rex would have HUGE potential value to a trading partner, as opposed to the known (flawed) quantity that is Sergio… So the hammer will probably fall, one way or the other, as soon as Marty is fully back — assuming no additional injuries, etc.
I can’t imagine the Blazers giving up on Rex before even giving him a chance to play though. That strikes me as highly unlikely. They would probably, in an ideal world, like to sit him on the bench and keep the tool in the toolbox for next year — he just starting his rookie contract and all, and is essentially a college sophomore this year…
The other “odd man out” is Frye, who is going to be squeezed by the move of Outlaw to the 4 for significant when Marty comes back… If KP decides NOT to move either Outlaw or Marty this year, then it’s Frye who will go bye-bye at the trade deadline. Frye represents a big cap-hold this summer, I understand, and he’s the one guy of the above not already under contract for next year — so I wouldn’t rule this outcome out.
All of this has been said here before, many times by many people.

I will quit watching games if they pull a Jermaine O'Neal II with Bayless.
by Bust a Bucket on Nov 18, 2008 12:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I know what you're saying
But that’s not exactly fair. If they play Bayless more, it has to cost someone else minutes (namely, Sergio). Then we have Sergio riding the pine, when he wants minutes. Since he /has/ been playing well this season, he has a legitimate request for about 12-18 minutes a game in relief of Blake.
Essentially, it’s not our fault we have 3 decent pointguards and playing time for only 2. Either we pull a JO-2 with Bayless, or we could easily end up doing the same thing with Sergio.
