Your Game Day Thread Is Now Open -- Timberwolves

The two Florida wins don't look quite as sparkling if we somehow drop tonight's game against the pups.

Start talking now about how Greg Oden will inundate Kevin Love and Al Jefferson with problems. But first, say first.

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Josh Thatcher

Blazers Edge

14 Nov. 2008

First is an important psychological and physiological post, for both the poster and the thread. Without a “first” post, the thread lacks definition and enthusiasm. For example, often times, posts will go minutes and minutes without so much as a comment, and so when new lurkers show up, the lack of comments makes them hesitant to post, and thus the thread is thrown into a vicious spin cycle of non-posting lurkingness. If the first potential commenter would actually DO THE WORK of posting a comment, the thread would then have the friendly atmosphere conducive to posting, which would further both the thread and the community as a whole. In short, posting a “first” comment not only is beneficial to the first poster, giving him/her free exposure and an extra comment to pad stats, but it also benefits the entire community by encouraging a community of comments and healthy discussion.

In addition to the aforementioned benefits presented by posting a “first” comment, both to the commentor, the lurkers (aka potential comentees), and the community as a whole, we must also look at what the ramifications are for other threads. First and foremost, if there is no “first” comment, and thus the post is more likely to be one of lurkers, then people are likely to spend the time they would take to comment skipping around to other fanposts, where the cycle is then repeated. This leads to “fanpost promiscuity,” where Bedge readers skip freely between a multiplicity of fanposts, briefly reading each one but never really giving thought to any of the posts. By encouraging “first” posts, that problem is lessened as readers pause to consider the topic at hand in order to write a well-though-out comment, which then encourages well-thought-out replies.

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Josh

I just read that…it was awesome. One question however: Is it OK to come in and just post “First” or not?? I couldn’t tell….really I couldn’t.

Yes. "First" posts are thus very good. Here's my essay outline--it might help you.

1. Without a "first" post, the thread lacks definition and enthusiasm
2. It prevents “fanpost promiscuity"
3. It encourages more well-thought-out comments and replies
4. It encourages lurkers to stop lurking and jump right in
5. It gives the "first” poster more expose and pads his/her stats

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

How could a thread lack definition

Isn’t that what the title and main post are for?

2. I’m in favor of all kinds of promiscuity
3. Check
4. Are these the same lurkers who ruin my correlation data?
5. I only pad my stats with one liners and responses to trolls

by Magnum on Nov 15, 2008 11:51 AM PST up reply actions

Yeh but first sets the atmosphere...it prevents someone from Tom coming in and talking about "junk"

2. ok, ok, i thought just Tom would be in that camp, but apparently not
3. i’ll take a check anytime…email me for my address.
4. i used to be a lurker, and now look at me. i’m like, a real bedger. see, one benefit i didn’t talk about, is that moving from a lurker to a poster causes you to meet new people, thus raising your self esteem.
5. I see “first” posts as a way for us to try and keep up with Timbo

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Interesting essay

While I appreciate your point of view, I must point out that in my culture, the baring of the “first” is considered not only immodest, offensive and demeaning, but is also a personal emasculating challenge that often results in death and/or loss of extremities.

But we’re not in my culture, so first away.

Seriously though, since the relative uselessness (from my perspective) of the exercise doesn’t stop people from continuing the tradition, might it do to at least add some relevance to the practice by offering some tangible reward for firsters? What this might be, I don’t know. Tangible itself is a relative term when you’re talking about an online medium, so maybe one could build up “first” points and spend them on… oh, I don’t know, a guest column or something? I guess that’s kind of useless what with fanposts and all…

Tonight

this is my first post, hello all. let me start by saying im a sixers fan but i have an extreme envy for everything about the blazers organization, even the fans who were recently said to be the best in the NBA, but above all it is appreciation for greg oden. i jumped out of my chair after seeing some last nights game. u could see some of the future with those blocks and and that dunk.

for tonight, i just hope u can take advantage of minnesotas lack of legit size. yes, they have jefferson and love, but they arent defensive stoppers-quite the contrary. i hope oden destroys both of them and aldridge rains in 17 footers the whole game (and plays in the post sometime). lets hope theres the combo of Oden playing well and getting a W. yesterday was kinda rough against that hornets team that is just very good. get some W’s before the road trip is over and u basically have odens first home game next wednesday.

best of luck.

I look forward to Oden officially putting an end to the Haterade era...

…for now, all the premature rush-to-judgment Oden-haters have been momentarily stunned by the 11-11-4 effort last night in 24 minutes of play (on THREE field goal attempts). Whether it’s tonight or a week or two down the road, I look forward to the utter lack of commentary on how the big guy is underwhelming, disappointing, limited, needs to earn minutes, should back up Pryz, etc.

The silence will be deafening.

About 60%.

But that was left-handed.

I thought the same last night

5/6. Shaq and Howard would pay a lot to have that skill. Few big men in the league do. He could be instantly top 10 in that category, along with Ilgauskas, Yao, Miller, Okur, Foster who all have a good shot from around this range and the line.

by Norsktroll on Nov 15, 2008 1:55 PM PST up reply actions

This was my favorite part of Oden’s game last night (only slightly above block #4). If he can continue to be that effective from the line on a day to day basis, Nothing will stop him!

by shua on Nov 15, 2008 2:01 PM PST up reply actions

It'll be interesting to see

if and when he’s able to incorporate his ability to shoot out to fifteen into his overall offensive game. One of his strengths is that he has no desire to drift out to the 20 foot range and fire up jumpers like a lot of centers these days (leading to higher percentage looks inside).

But I’d like to see him incorporate a little turnaround jumper in the 5-10 foot range. He can knock that down. Never really saw it at OSU until the very end of the tourney because his wrist couldn’t bend.

Either way, you’re absolutely right – a power center who knocks down free throws at a nice clip is a weapon and a luxury few teams have…

Those guys will turn it around. I think as Oden gets incorporated into the lineup and the offense gets more balanced, that will help. Blake and Pryz in there together (especially with Nic, as well) puts too much emphasis on Roy and LMA and those guys have really struggled as a result.

It’s too early to say, but if things continue on there current trajectory and Blake continues to struggle, there will (more) calls to replace him, whether with Sergio or a PG to be named.

by KP Corleone on Nov 15, 2008 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

I know Blake has shot/played really well in stretches...

… so maybe that’s too harsh. I don’t think he’s been terrible, especially on the offensive end spotting up. But initiating offense just isn’t his game, and opponents are really honing in on Roy and LMA (especially when Rudy’s on the bench) as a result.

Hopefully.

Right now B-Rex is more of a two guard hoping to be converted. He certainly has the physical tools to be whatever he wants. I think it’s a question of whether his frame of mind can be changed.

He tends to hesitate before hitting an open shooter on the wing, for instance, while looking for his drive. He’s used to scoring. I think he’ll be the guy, next year, but I’m not sure he’s ready yet.

He’s never been a good defender on quick PGs, but he seems a step slower this year. Maybe it’s the injury. Maybe it’s me. But I don’t think Nate’s going to put up with this level of defense from him all year. He’s making Sergio look good on that end.

Video Quality

Why do the CSN broadcasts look so terrible and blurry? Is it a Comcast thing, or a Blazer production thing, or what? Is there any prospect for improving it?

Because the signal is analog

The HD TV has to down-convert that signal and display it in a way it wasn’t intended. The picture still looks fine on a regular TV (standard definition) though obviously not as good as an HD signal on an HD set.

by zaruga on Nov 15, 2008 3:36 PM PST up reply actions

Analog doesn't have much to do with it

since today’s over-the-air HD broadcasts are analog and look effin’ great on my big ass HDTV [HD and digital are not linked]. It has to do with whether or not you ask your TV to upconvert. You can cycle through “widescreen mode” or something similar on your remote to find something that looks good. Upconversion is a tricky process and most TV’s eff it up.

Also, I believe I read many Consumerist reports about how Comcast compresses a lot of their channels. You don’t realize how crappy it is until it’s on a larger screen.

by torsoheap on Nov 15, 2008 4:36 PM PST up reply actions

It's not about HD vs. Not HD or analog vs. Digital

It’s that CSN Blazer games, specifically, look way worse than other analog, non-HD programming on other channels, including non-HD analog Blazer games on other channels.

It seems like one of those things is quite likely right…

I’m betting on SLOW, but I never saw him play in college…
