Post-Gameday Open Conversational Thread

There are a few people around the board tonight and our overseas fans may be in the middle of their day checking out the site, so I'm going to do something I only do once in a blue moon.  For about the next hour I'm going to hang around here.  This is an open thread.  If you'd like to talk Blazers or anything else with me or anyone here for a while, have at it.  I will monitor the comments and respond as I'm able.  If nobody wants to chat that's fine too, I'll just do some research on next week's games.

You can be serious, silly, on- or off-topic as you choose and no question will remain unanswered from my point of view.  Here's your chance to have at Dave for a while and get to know each other better.

Oden Tonight

It is obvious after tonight’s game he will be the next great center in NBA history.

Just kidding Dave. I have been encouraged by Oden’s play in the first half at Miami and the second half tonight. Looking forward to the Jefferson match-up tomorrow.

Yes

Although Jefferson may be a bit crafty for G.O. at this stage of his career. Watch out for fouls.

The thing that I love about Oden is that his size makes up for a lot of inexperience. For instance he’s nowhere near the technical pick-setter that Przybilla is but New Orleans still had to go a mile to get around his screens tonight. I think that kind of thing will see Oden through even an imperfect rookie year and make him valuable.

i was impressed

I really enjoyed watching Oden on both ends of the floor. But I didn’t like the decision to leave him out there at the end of the game. Pryz would have been a better option covering that pick and role. But it’s also Paul and even the most experienced players have trouble gaurding his pick and role with Chandler

by remmer7quack on Nov 15, 2008 1:12 AM PST up reply actions

I think Oden

is chafing a little at playing fewer minutes. That may be part of it. I didn’t mind leaving him out there considering how well he was doing. I suspect among other things Nate just wanted him to get a rhythm and some confidence and know that the team believes in him.

—Dave

by Dave on Nov 15, 2008 1:14 AM PST up reply actions

i agree

tough to take out a player playing as well as he was. And your right. Building his confidence is a major part of his growth. But you don’t want to sacrafice growth for a win. Of course, this game would have taked a miracle to win. The Hornets looked poised to win. An MVP caliber player always helps

by remmer7quack on Nov 15, 2008 1:17 AM PST up reply actions

I would guess

that Nate didn’t see any advantage we would have had with Przy outweighing what Oden was giving us. If it was a clear choice between confidence and the win Nate would have gone for the win. I doubt it was and the other benefits helped tip the scale for Oden.

Keep in mind too that as soon as Przybilla got in there the defense would have let him have the ball in favor of doubling anyone else, particularly Roy. Przybilla hasn’t been part of our late game unit for that reason.

timeouts

what was there time out situation? Could have possibly done a offensive / defensive substitution. I’m a big Nate fan, so I’ll trust his feel for the game and his players more then what I think I know. If that makes sense

by remmer7quack on Nov 15, 2008 1:28 AM PST up reply actions

Didn't have them to spend

You have to preserve them carefully when you’re trailing because you may need to advance the ball to halfcourt without spending 3 extra seconds dribbling it. Or you may foul somebody with 1.5 seconds left and need a timeout in order to get the ball downcourt for the game-tying shot.

—Dave

by Dave on Nov 15, 2008 1:33 AM PST up reply actions

I think the loss was secondary to Nate tonight

He was looking to get Oden going and it may pay off in the long term instead of the short term with one win tonight.

I just like finally having 12 fouls at center instead of 6

at least Nate has the option to not go small if one of them gets in early foul trouble.

2 good centers

We should be a lot better defensibly now. I like Oden comign off the bench too.

by remmer7quack on Nov 15, 2008 1:21 AM PST up reply actions

Oden off the bench....GREAT IDEA

He needs time to get back on his game. Working with LMA and Roy will only slow the first team.

When he slides into the starting 5, it’ll take some time, but indvidually, he’ll be ready.

By the way, Love and Jefferson are going to be in for it tomorrow.

by kobisportsguy on Nov 15, 2008 1:35 AM PST up reply actions

Nobody can stop

Oden in the second unit. And it does allow him to get a rhythm when he comes in. That said, he’ll be back starting before too long.

Cool stuff

1. Did you grow up in Portland, or have you always been a distance fan?

2. How does your day job work with your late night blogging? Do you never get calls in the morning, or do you just need minimal sleep?

3. How often do you actually get to see the Blazers in person?

4. There are rumors that run around occasionally that you actually post in the conversations sometimes under an alias just for the fun of it. Care to comment?

5. Does the real Dave Deckard who pastors in Idaho know you’ve stolen his identity?

6. Is “Ben Golliver” really his name, or should we be trying to guess what his real name is?

7. You’ve said that Blazer personnel (including KP) post on here. How many specific people in the organization do you know of that post here? Do you know any of their screen identities? Of course, you wouldn’t reveal them, but I was just curious if you actually knew any of them.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.

Hmmm

1. I grew up in Portland, went to Laurelhurst Elementary, Fernwood Middle School, Grant High School, and for a while even Lewis + Clark college. I left Portland in ‘95 and haven’t been back full time since then. BUT that also means I’ve had a dish for years and seen every Blazer game for that long, being outside of the blackout area.

2. Adjustable schedule…minimal sleep.

3. Once or twice a year. It’d be more if I lived in town, of course. For most things though I’ve really found TV gives you a better view UNLESS you can afford seats really close up.

4. This is one thing I’ve never done. If I’m going to comment I am upfront and honest and do so under my own name. I would consider this unethical, in fact.

5. Not since I stuffed him in my trunk.

6. I think that’s his real name. I mean, come on…if you were going to make one up would THAT be it???

7. Technically I have never said that. Others have. Personally I would not mention it, just file it away in my chest of secretly cool things about doing this. I never look up screen names for any reason except moderating so I don’t know who is who. Oh…one exception. If someone CLAIMS to be someone famous in a comment to add weight to their words I will double-check that. They never are.

I am semi-famous

See if you agree.

Not that it adds any weight to my opinions about basketball, of which I have very few anyway.

Sure like this team though. I was a not-within-half-the-planet of famous when I held seasons’ tickets for the Walton championship teams. I do miss the fast breaks, which made winning so much easier, it seems. But Hollinger assures me that Portland is the most effective offense in basketball, so I’ll go with that.

Great site, very welcome to this fan far away.

I think Bayless could have helped tonight, and some other games so far this young season.

Nothing against Blake or Sergio, but why do you think Bayless isn’t getting any PT?

Yeah, he’s a rookie who needs to earn his spot in the rotation but lots of times when the offense is non existent his style, much more so than Sergio or Blake can get the team going. I’m having trouble understanding why Nate decides to play Serg off the ball with Roy handling the point. Isn’t that the ideal situation to play Bayless instead of Sergio?

I wouldn’t Bayless has looked that bad in practice to where he doesn’t earn some PT in times like that.

Again, I’m not anti Sergio or Blake but I would have really liked to see Bayless play tonight in that 4th quarter. I think he could have turned things around. Your thoughts Dave?

by Bskey on Nov 15, 2008 1:13 AM PST reply actions

Bayless wouldn't get fourth quarter time

in a close game right now. He has no continuity or experience with the other guys who would be out there. Also Bayless’ gifts are best expressed when he controls the ball (at least right now) and you KNOW they’re not going to put the ball in his hands with Roy and Aldridge and Oden and Ruy available.

However defensively I was thinking it would have been nice to see a little something-something from him tonight. I hope his comfort, attitude, and fit with the team can develop enough that he gets some PT because I think he will eventually bring a defensive dimension that we don’t have. The team is in love with his body and how he uses it…which should not be confused with TominHawaii’s post below.

—Dave

by Dave on Nov 15, 2008 1:18 AM PST up reply actions

Normally I would understand not playing him in the 4thQ.

I think tonight though it would have been worth taking the risk. Of course if he came in and didn’t win the game we’d hear all about how bad of a decision it was by Nate to bring him in.

What happens with Batum when Martell comes back?

Will he take his place next to Bayless while not getting any minutes, or will Nate find away to get him his 10 minutes a night?

Also, do you see Sergio’s playing time increasing or was tonight a product of Blake’s foul trouble?

by DRKENNETHNOISEWATER on Nov 15, 2008 1:17 AM PST reply actions

The Batum question

will be fascinating. You can’t simply bury him anymore. But I do think Martell will eventually reclaim his starting job. Batum might be down to 10-12 minutes per game. As long as he hustles, defends, and keeps rebounding he’ll find time though. You may see Outlaw revert to power forward more.

Frye is already losing minutes. That trend may continue. I am almost on record as saying that either Frye or Outlaw will be traded soon. I guess I might as well go on record here.

by Bust a Bucket on Nov 15, 2008 1:29 AM PST up reply actions

Couldn't agree more.

There’s only so many minutes to go around.

Martell and Batum make a perfect SF rotation for years to come (talent AND great contracts). That’s the only thing (along with durability) that scares me about Gerald Wallace.

What about the PG spot? Blake is serviceable, potentially the perfect backup. Sergio has potential, but with Roy’s ballhandling skills we don’t need a true point. Just a great combo guard who can defend and shoot….T-Rex.

But can we wait for him to develop, with our trade assets (Frye, Outlaw, Sergio, etc) all a year or two from Free Agency?

by kobisportsguy on Nov 15, 2008 1:30 AM PST up reply actions

I'm not so sure about Bayless either

Here is some random advice from a 30 year old what to do with the next ten
  • Travel the world to see how other people are living
  • Exercise/do sports
  • Take a variety of courses at your university (preferably a good one of course)
  • Keep in contact with your old friends
  • Read “Happier” by Tal-Ben Shahar (teaches the most popular Harvard course) and follow some of the advice in the book to become so. He e.g. talks about identifying what you “really really want to do” and what could be your job, your career, or even your calling. But don’t expect answers over night.

The Hornets

did a very good job of blitzing our passers and not allowing ball movement at the end. Two of our critical shots were Lamarcus with a corner three (which I didn’t like much) and Roy with a three-point spinning jumper over two people (which I liked even less). After those you had to bomb away. Roy hit both of his other bombs, so you can’t argue with him shooting them. But there’s no doubt New Orleans forced us into some bad attempts late.

I think I can find another back-up point guard. That’s not to say I’d like to see Sergio go, mind you. It helps set the tone for the narrative. I tend to stick with instrumental or foreign fare though so that my mind doesn’t follow the lyrics. A lot of soundtracks especially, which are designed to be ambient mood setters.

I love the Lord of the Rings trilogy because it got me through rough times as a kid. I love collections of short stories and I think that’s one of the most magnificent literary forms. I love the Bible not just because I work with it every day but because, if done properly (which most people—including professionals don’t…people need to look at it like a living relationship book and not a textbook or book of pat answers) it opens up a world of thought and conversation and in many ways beauty.

Wallace would be an interesting fit but the team would have to adjust to him in the starting lineup. Wallace and Rudy and Sergio…WOOT! But that’s putting him on the second unit. I don’t think we have enough players to get him though unless we trade one of our top four.

What is your church?

Lutheran

Offshoot of Catholocism…Martin Luther, Protestant Reformation…though most people unfortunately have lost that spirit of inquisitiveness and the willingness to be counter-cultural. Sad.

Major differences: different number of Sacraments (Catholics seven, Lutherans two), different church polity, much different standards for ordination, different view of the Apocrypha…there are more but it gets complex.

Yeah...it's a tricky thing

You have to have something to guide you but you also have to hold to it somewhat loosely lest it entrap you instead of propelling you onward. Most people don’t do denominations very well. Instead they confuse them with culture or family background or tradition or rules…all of which are a part of them but none of which make suitable masters.

I just love the way different people can get together through something os as little importance as sports.
I am an atheist and really don’t know much about lutherans (just the beggining, and always had the idea that it was more of a political thing rather than spiritual).
Here in Spain people don’t care about religion much, you don’t see people going to church (it’s 11:38 of Sunday morning here). I suppose it’s the side effect of being forced to go to church for 40 years, people didn’t go because of hope, they went because of fear.
Now most of <50 population in Spain are atheists, agnostics or just call themselves catholic but go to church less than 20 times in their lives and don’t act as if they really were.

That is a hard question

I think the Blazers believe Sergio does nice things and will continue to do so. I’m not sure the Blazers believe he will ever be a complete and dependable player, especially if you’re not playing an up-tempo game. I believe they’d prefer a more dependable, more complete option…like Blake with a couple upgrades. I don’t know if they can get that player though. Is there a place for that in the media? What is the media’s role in covering the team?

the public, which drives ad revenue, determines what the media’s role is. Gavin is a friend and he’s very good at what he does. He’s certainly different than I am, but that’s not a fault. I enjoy listening to him when I get the chance to.

I think you probably need a balance in media, and where that balance sits depends on the medium itself. Television is nearly all sensationalized now. I don’t expect anything from them except blood and ratings. I’d prefer my newspapers a little detached and dependable. In radio, though, I’d love a mix…some identifying with the people and passionate and on-the-sleeve, others more analytical and cerebral. Radio is about being informed and entertained.

As for college teams, the fans here always feel like the teams didn’t live up to expectations. The beginning of the season usually has people high on the teams and thinking wins wins wins, but by mid season they are down on a team (look at the Ducks football right now) even when doing good, but not extraordinary. It’s fair to say they’re fairweather I suppose, but it’s a trend that repeats itself among many casual fans.

by Bskey on Nov 15, 2008 2:01 AM PST up reply actions

When it comes to the Beavers...

there is just not much to be excited about. The only worth while piece of the San Diego Padres I think skipped AAA. The Padres system sucks. AUGH NEED TO STOP TALKING ABOUT BASEBALL ON A BASKETBALL BLOG. FOCUS. I think its the general nature of the teams. I think it is natural for minor teams to only draw the hardcore fans of whatever sport. However, as the Blazers are a major franchise it is easier to be drawn in by brief success and rapid failure. Not to say that what we are doing is brief success. However, in terms of last year and the streak, as a Blazers employee I certainly felt the impact of bandwagon fans. And it was awesome.

by isoldout on Nov 15, 2008 2:02 AM PST up reply actions

What are your expectations now?

by DaniBCN on Nov 15, 2008 1:55 AM PST reply actions

Expectations:

Oden: game-bending defensive force and rebounder, raw offense, significant impact BUT gradual recovery and not the player he was or will be. That’s been delayed a bit but it should come about.

Rudy: good offensive player, smart player, movement guy, defensive problems, squeezed in the minutes crunch and thus we might not see as much of him as we’d like. He’s been great on offense and not bad on defense comparatively and has well exceeded my expectations as far as minutes and contributions.

Batum: defensive specialist, young and needing confidence, buried on the bench behind Outlaw and Webster. Obviously Webster’s injury has freed that logjam and Batum has played well beyond my expectations.

Bayless: defender, scorer, should take Jarrett Jack’s minutes, but not going to be a good point guard, rather a scoring guard. We haven’t seen him since and I was wrong about Jack’s minutes. Rudy and Sergio have all of those and more.

I said I'd answer anything

I’m not sure what is “innermost” though. There’s nothing too damning, like me being a closet L*ker fan. I suppose in the context of this blog I would say my innermost secret here, in the sense that it’s close to my heart and I don’t say it much, is that I’m really proud of what we’ve done here and I think it’s an amazing, wonderful place.

As far as life…I don’t know. Part of my growing up with regards to life was a decision that I would be who I am and not compartmentalize, meaning there’s not a lot that’s important to me that I don’t show. I like to think I have depth and complexity but pretty much what you see is what you get. I’m not sure any secrets I would have would be any more revealing of me than what you see here every day. That sounds like a cop-out, but it’s pretty much true. I lay myself out here as best I can, at least in an online-basketball context.

I guess if pressed I’d say I find Lance Uppercut sexy in a rugged, manly, bristly sort of way.

just want to drop a quick hi

Hey dave…this is exactly the sort of thing that makes Blazersedge the best blog (and probably most popular) in all of SB Nation. You really do things the right way, and hopefully you will be rewarded someday soon in more than just congratulations. I hope you are proud of what you have created. I know I’m proud to call myself a member of this great place. I also didn’t realize we both left portland at the same time! crazy stuff. Hopefully i’ll be moving back up there if i can ever finish school!

Now, for a question. I’ve been thinking of this a bit lately. I’m kind of aggrevated with LMA and his lack of desire to play inside where he should be. He is way too in love with the 15’ jump shot, and totally forgets that he should be up next to the rim powering his way in or showing fancy footwork to get easy buckets and cleaning up the boards as his length and athleticism allows him to do. Anyhow, not to say he’s not a great player, i think he’s one of the top 50 in the league for sure, but he’d be top 10 if he used his height and prowess more. That said, and him being a cornerstone of what we are trying to do, would you consider trading him for a top notch PG? I’m thinking someone of the caliber of CP3 or Deron Williams, something along those lines…I know it’d never happen as guys like that generally don’t move teams as they are more rare than a skilled 7 footer, but it’s just a thought….

Thanks for opening up tonight! hope i’m not too late to the party!

If one of the Big Three is to be traded

it will be Lamarcus…not just because of what you mention, but because his best game has at least a chance of conflicting more with Greg’s than a guard’s would. Also because he’s the most likely of the three to end up somewhere like…I don’t know…Dallas. That said, I would not trade him until I knew for sure what the team looked like with all of our main guys flourishing.

ok here we go
A team of us who have read and been touched by The Shack are convinced this book deserves a reading across the broadest reaches of our culture. Not only is this a compelling and provocative story, but it has a literary quality to it that distinguishes it as a special gift. It offers one of the most poignant views of God and how he relates to humanity that has been written in our time. It will not only encourage those who already know him but also engage those who have not yet recognized his work in their lives

From the “missy project”

From the back of the book :

Wrestles with the timeless question “where is God in a world so filled with unspeakeable pain?”

Every child must be encouraged to get as much education as he has the ability to take. We want this not only for his sake-but for the nation's sake. Nothing matters more to the future of our country: not military preparations-for armed might is worthless if we lack the brain power to build a world of peace; not our productive economy-for we cannot sustain growth without trained manpower; not our democratic system of government-for freedom is fragile if citizens are ignorant.

dave, can you trust a big but and a smile?

or is that girl, indeed, poison?

he should define "poison"

it's this kind of advice

that keeps me coming back here day after day, week after week, and now year after year. So many new faces now, i feel like a stranger again.

I'd say she's poison, for ...

having a “big but [sic] and a smile” aren’t necessarily great physical traits.

Regarding looks, I definitely prefer a woman who’s in shape and fit over one with a huge backside.

We all have our own personal tastes, though; it’s just that mine includes long hair — as I’ve got a shaggy mop on my head, so it’d be odd to hit up someone with a butch haircut — and, of course, a nice physique.

Yet, on the other hand, there’s several women who aren’t fond of tall, lanky men with an unkempt style.

As the old saying goes, though, “to each their own.”

There isn't really much about the Blazers I already don't have mapped out. I was curious to know what

you think Martell is going to do when he gets back. Will him returning mess the chemistry up? I really don’t like the idea of Batum just riding the bench like Bayless after what he has done. I meant his guy swatted Tim Duncan and Dwyane Wade. I hope Nate splits minutes up so Outlaw, Martell, and Batum all get run. At the very least let Outlaw play the power forward and sit Channing.

Outlaw is trade bait with Frye imo

Interesting thread.

I had Dave pegged as a Methodist.

It's funny, I would have guessed Lutheran

When I first came here and read Dave’s posts.
But after a few episodes of hypocrisy from others- joking about anything is perfectly okay, unless it’s religion- where Dave’s name and occupation was invoked as permission and reason for getting their metaphysical panties in a bunch about perceived sacrilege while making sexist or mildly homo-phobic comments elsewhere, well I assumed he was a non-denom Capital C pastor.
And I stopped posting for a while and felt guilty when I did post.
It’s great to read Dave’s responses, and realize that I share a lot of the same feelings about religion and personal growth and responsibility. And that Family-friendly does not mean Family-values-only, here on the ’Edge.

The rules

where Dave talks about family friendly really give you a pretty good idea of his philosophy. What you are is what you are, and you don’t pretend to be something else, but there are times and places where you exercise self-control and don’t let it all hang out. I think that pretty much sums it up.

The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

I'll take liberty

And answer this one for ol’ Dave.

While Bend it like Beckham tickles his girdle in a way we can’t repeat on this site, it’s not the one.
and though Space Jam truly owns, it’s not the one,
For Dave has an eclectic taste, and needs some real quality sports macheesmo.
Though he loved John Goodman in(everything) the Babe Ruth movie.
And cried throughout Brian’s Song.
The one movie that represents Dave, and what he wishes for the future of Blazer’s Edge…..
is..
ROLLERBALL
