Brandon Roy is no longer allowed to take breathers
Other than Steve Blake with a +/- of only +2, Brandon Roy is the only Blazer with a positive +/- in the last game against Hornets at +5. That means, in the 6 minutes of the game that Roy wasn't in, the Blazers were outscored by 10 points. We need to do better than that; the bench needs to step up and, at the least, play some defense - try to at least stay even when Roy is out of the game.

yeah... and our offense needs to quick taking breathers late in the game
Our only two field goals in the last 7 minutes were Brandon’s two desperation three pointers.
New Orleans didn’t play very well tonight, but we were even worse. We need some consistency on the offensive end.

A guy like Bayless could have helped tonight
The Hornets pressured the Blazer guards to start the offense out of their comfort zone. They doubled the pick and roll and guards weren’t fast enough to turn the corner or make decisions. Not enough players attacking the hoop off the dribble. I think a player with the skillset of Bayless would be extremely helpful next time. Credit the Hornets, they played very hard on D and Blazers did a good job too.

thank you... our point guard production was terrible tonight
I don’t care how many turnovers they got… they simply were not a threat to the Hornets.
Bayless would be able to come in, hit a few mid-range jumpers, draw fouls and get our offense going in the second half when it seems to shut down.

Unfortunatley the Blazers just weren't able to adjust to the pressure Defense
The players on the floor let it get them out of their rhythm, and coaching didn’t get an adjustment made.
Silver lining in the game with Greg Oden’s play, but with the stats that NO had the Blazers HAVE to win that game.

Bayless Is Coming
And when he does there will be no looking back.
Sergio, the clock is ticking…
The Oden era finally kicked into first gear tonight. It was worth the wait.

When the Blazers start winning with Oden in the line up then they will introduce Bayless. Blazers will be a little sloppy for
a while with Bayless and then stabilize. They can only integrate one player at a time. Sergio’s clock is ticking.
I think the Blazers looked better in the 4th when Oden was out there. Too bad he wasn’t out there more because Roy and Aldridge could have got a better rhythm with him out there more.

I wouldn't be too sure
about Sergio’s clock ticking.
He’s playing well.
It may be Blake’s clock that is ticking.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

I mean, if you had to guess…

Why I think Sergio has done a fine job the last 3 games now he should NEVER shoot the ball. He is

wow, Sergio hate and the Bayless love
in this thread in over the top. Sergio played one of his best games tonight in relief of a foul plagued Blake. Bayless is not the savior of this team, and if he had played we had just as much of a chance of being blown out as we do of winning. Sergio helped keep this team close in the 2nd and even pull ahead by driving and dishing to open team mates. At one point the team had 17 straight FG’s that resulted in an assist, how crazy is that? That is Sergio positively affecting the game.
Give the haterade on sergio a break, he is playing the best ball of his Portland career. Bayless will get his shot if he proves it in practice.

2nd half.
Sergio was pretty much useless in the second half. He racked up 5 assists in the 1st half when the Hornets were chasing him off the pick and roll. Once the Hornets adjusted by hedging on screens or sagging behind the screens, Sergio could not make much of an impact because he cannot shoot or finish. Sergio did not do much in the 2nd half. Oden, Aldridge, and Roy did the damage.

It is a team problem
not an individual problem. I only heard the game on the radio, but it didn’t sound like Sergio was the problem.
If the Blazers can’t figure out how to stop teams scoring at a pace of about +2 points/minute when Roy is out of the game, that’s on everybody. I’d really like to see the tape of those 6 minutes when Roy went out to see what went wrong on defense. The offense without Roy is also a big concern, but like I said, for the whole game – six minutes without Roy was the statistical difference in the game – defense should be able to make up for that.

This is my first post..
in about 7 months. Mainly a lurker. However, I have to find the reaction to one loss after two fantastic victories a little overblown. Suddenly, consistency is asked from the bench after two 40 + point performances. Granted, 40 points can’t be expected a night, I find it disheartening that all of the sudden, Roy can’t take breathers and the bench is horrible because it had an off night. New Orleans is a good team in the Western Conference. We are going to lose games. Sometimes we won’t look the best losing games. Instead of dishing blame on one player (Sergio) who had some fantastic number of assists, let us remember that these things happen. Teams lose.

don't sell out to the patience-mongers isoldout...
if we’re going to make a serious run this year, we have to win games that are winable, especially ones on the road.

You mean like
the ones in Orlando and Miami? We’ve got 2 of 3 winnable games on this trip, and none of them were against pushover teams.
The impressive thing is that we kept this in the “winnable” category right until the end against a truly elite team.

yeah, but i still don't know if we were the reason it was winnable
or if they played poorly tonight.
I would say that the Hornets didn’t play well… or you could spin that and say we played good defense against them.

I was just making a point
that when Roy wasn’t in the game, that’s when everything went wrong. That’s a problem, Roy shouldn’t have to play 42 minutes a game – we need him to stay fresh through the season, which is why these numbers are troubling. I’d like to see, at least, the defense able to keep the game basically even when he’s out.

Just the Facts
Greg is the real deal. And we can finally see that. He played well against an excellent center and team. That’s the good news. At the same time, Outlaw and Batum gave us only 6 pts in 25 minutes – showing us why we are all looking forward to get Martel back in a few weeks. Because Roy, Sergio and Blake played 89 minutes, leaving only 7 minutes at the guard slots, Rudy ended up playing 22 of his 29 minutes at SF.
The bottom line for me is that we’ll win a lot of games with our line-up, but the PG slot with it’s 5 pts in 47 minutes was the problem. The 11 assists were fine, but the Hornets virtually ignored Sergio/Blake and routinely doubled up on Roy/Rudy. Sergio is proving he can play quality minutes, but unless he can over-come his lack of point production, I don’t see how he can ever be an effective #1 PG. In the first 9 games, he’s played 115 minutes but scored only 21 pts. Further, he’s only .214 on his 3 pointers. Blake, on the other hand, has played 283 minutes and scored 87 points. Combined, we’re getting 12 ppg out of the PG slot. Better, but not great. Sergio is better on the assist side – but other teams are learning that they can ignore him on the offensive end.
And that’s the issue he now has to deal with. Eventually, it’s going to limit him.

Until GOD arrives in full force,
it wouldn’t hurt if they quit chuckin threes. Maybe they could attack the basket a little, especially LA. Everytime they throw up one of those wild-arse threes it just sucks the air out.

It is...
How many points your team scores vs the other team while one player is in the game. In other words, while BRoy was in the game we outscored the hornets by 2. So when he was not in the game we got outscored by 5.

We shouldn't have an issue with him much longer
Sophia (I think it was) is going to seduce him and take out his kneecaps.

+/- is one of those stats that tells you a lot…. or nothing at all. You have to take in context. It’s likely at the end of the year many players on Portland’s bench will have a solid +/- and maybe better than our starters but it doesn’t mean they are better than the starters… just better than who they matched up against.
