Hey La Familia Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid (with poll)
I have been fuming for about 36 hours over what I heard yesterday on the Morning Sports Page, as have many B-edgers. And I wanted to write a post calling Dawson and Doing names and vent out all my frustrations. But after reading Dave’s “Watching and waiting” thread, I’d rather do something constructive.
I want intelligent sports talk radio. And I know it does not sound like those two things can go together, but I hold out hope that they can. When Gavin Dawson took over the MSP he had a chance to make it a quality show, instead he has taken a page from the Lars Larson/Don Imus playbook. The MSP is trying to get listeners by being edgy and provocative. Yesterday, whenever someone called up to point that out Dawson dropped the call and made a big thing about how they he is just telling the truth. Yeah right. The truth is there is plenty of quality sports news to talk about without making outrageous claims like Oden is a bust after 29 minutes of play. Dave did a much better job of saying that than I can, so I will defer to his post on the benefits of watching and waiting.
What I want is a new host and co-host for the MSP. If you don’t believe me that Dawson is just trying to be controversial, think back to his take on this past NBA draft. On his former show Overtime with Gavin Dawson, he and Doing made this big deal about the Blazer’s draft being a bust and the fans being sheep that are only excited about the draft because KP told us it was a great draft. Then on the weekly Blazers’ podcast Dawson said the Blazers had a great draft. That sounds like a guy who says whatever the people he is working for want him to say, that sounds like a sheep.
And all I am going to say about Doing is that he is a L*ker fan. He owns L*ker gear, he likes watching K*be play, and he routed for the L*kers in the playoffs. Unacceptable.
So if you are like me and want some Real local sports talk radio in the morning there is only one thing to do... listen to something else. We have to turn the dial and keep it turned until either 95.5 or 1080 wise up and put a better product on the air. I know that all you want after a Tuesday night win is to pop the radio on Wednesday morning and hear a recap, but the more you listen to those two the worse it will get. Just think of it this way, anything is better than listening to a couple of Don Imus wannabes, even Don Imus (not that I recommend it).
For the poll, who would you like to see replace Dawson and Doing on the MSP. Personally I think a combination of Dave from Blazers Edge and John Strong would be awesome. For those of you who don’t know John Strong he is on the BFT with Canzano; he is really knowledgeable about a lot of sports and he seems pretty down to earth.

you know I loved it when Gavin took over for brown
However, I wasn’t a big fan when he was on the Fan because I thought he was a bit over the top. but since I’ve been down in Eugene I haven’t heard him once (since late September) so with out hearing what you said personally I believe you because I’ve listen to him so much when he was on the Fan and in large doses I always thought CIP was annoying.
Come on Gavin you’re better than this, I know you’re a Blazer fan at heart, and you’re good enough with out all this shock jock crap
The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

I dont like Dawson
Cause he talks about basketball he really sounds like he dosen’t know much about it, and when he talks about stuff he spits out so much info that is incorrect that it just becomes pathetic. One example that sticks in my brain was either in Late August or early Sept when he was talking about who the Blazers could get in the following summer, he started talking about getting Shawn Marion. He said he was only 28, when he’s actually 30, and made his whole argument on how Marion is the perfet age to join the Blazers and just coming into his prime. When in fact he is just coming out of his prime and in his decline!

Might be a bit of a stretch for Dave and Barrett
as they both have full time jobs to take care of already
but seriously, Gavin has never struck me as a super cool host. Even on the Bedge podcast, I’m MUCH more interested in Dave and Casey. Gavin is just like the Ernie Johnson of the podcast, except he doesn’t realize it and tries to be an analyst instead of a moderator.
I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Casey is ok. Gavin makes the conversation flow.
Dave is the only one that provides actual insightful analysis.

right
everybody has their own niche.
And Oden, once again, is a rookie, so non-stop fast break basketball is like fast-forwarding a song while he's trying to learn the lyrics.

Definitely
I just wish they would put the muzzle on Case now and then and let Dave speak up more. Casey always takes it upon himself to be the first one to answer a question. Gavin realizes this sometimes and asks Dave directly about somethings.
But overall, Dave is like a dang Idaho cowbell… we need more. Blazer fever demands it.

Fuming I was
But payback is going to be fun to listen to too. (too to?)
That is if I even turn on his radio show on monday.

I really like Gavin in the afternoon.
I don’t care for him in the morning.
I know. You’re asking what’s the difference? Here are couple of things.
1) In the morning, I’m jazzed to hear and talk about the games the night before. I’d love it if 95.5 would do that. But Gavin (and just about any other early talk show host) has to have a topic for the hour or for the entire show.
In the afternoon, I’ve already talked about the games from the day before. At this time I’m open to listening to other things. Trades, whether or not Oden sucks or who is the hottest Blazer are just a few examples.
2) Early in the day, I just don’t want to think that hard. I’d like to ease into my day.
Later, I’m more open to be challenged.
3) Gavin doesn’t know his demographics. The morning is more for people either going to work or they are at work.
In the afternoon, the younger crowd is listening. The work day is done and the beer drinkers are listening. That is his crowd.
I would love Gavin at 3pm. Move Canzano up to noon. Wheels should stay put. Who ever is on in the morning should talk about the games from the night before and the games to come later.
I’m just trying to constructively criticize.

Excellent take
The morning crowd is different than the rest of the day, and they need to choose a host accordingly.
Sell to your target market.

I was going to write something...
but you said it all. I have never been a huge fan of either Gavin or CIP but they had their niche contributing to other shows. I try every once in a while to listen to their morning show but I find myself on NPR more often because it seems like they are not being genuine in their comments. They do seem to want to just rile people up for ratings. I really don’t expect to agree with them on everything but they certainly need a more levelheaded approach to presenting their opinions.

I was initially relieved when Gavin and Doing took over...
Katie and Kenny weren’t good listening. I like Kenny as Wheeler’s sidekick, though.
I think Gavin has already run his course though. Dude has nothing original, only that Travis needs to get traded cuz he’s one dimensional (which is fine if that’s your take… but hearing that EVERY SINGLE DAY?) and GO is a bust.
Barf.
C’mon fellas… you gotta be creative enough to challenge your own opinions, offer fresh perspective and insight, and LEAD Blazermania… not continue with the negative we’ve had to deal with for years.
And his response would be, “I’m just calling it as I see it!” LAME.
And they’ve flipflopped on the Ducks and Beavers more than a pair of Reef thongs. At the beginning of the year all they talked about was the poise the Ducks showed, and a few weeks later after the Ducks lost two games all they did was clown on how they’d be surprised if the Ducks won another game. Now they’re all on the Beavers junk screaming about how they should be hyped up for the Rose Bowl and Riley is the best coach in the nation. Funny they failed to mention any of that when the Beavers were 1-3.
It’s really turned into bad radio. I’ve been pretty disappointed lately. Portland could do better. Portland DESERVES better.
I vote for me and my buddy Tom. We’ll call it the Tom & Ben Show. It’ll be sick.

Portland deserves better
Yes, and sadly the Tom and Ben show would probably be an improvement.
Anything would be an improvement.
Heck if they can’t find anyone, just replay last night’s game again. That would be way better than listening to their juvenile crude talk about beer and loose women.

no doubt...
That’s actually a pretty good idea though.
I can think of few things I’d rather listen to in the morning than Wheels calling our last win (I’m not going with game… something about listening to losses that seems counterproductive to positive thinking).
Just air great Blazer wins in the morning… I love it.

All I have to say is
what are they gonna say Monday morning after Oden has another double double tonight with 4 or 5 blocks thrown in? Will they eat their words? I bet they don’t, as they seem to have a hard time admitting when they’re wrong. We’ll see though. Ultimately, I do like those two when they talk Blazers, but have been groing INCREASINGLY weary of their GO is a bust talk. It’s getting old fast, especially since anyone with half a brain cell knows that it takes time to get back into shape. They themselves less than 2 weeks ago were still talking about Oden needing to get his “fast twitch” muscles back, openly stating that they were very aware it would take a couple months for him to get back into pristine basketball shape. The fact that after his first significant playing time game (Miami) they were already trashing on him only serves to prove that they are trying to be “edgy” and “controversial”. Plus, even though I think Wheels is a total company man, and have had my issues with the stuff he’s been spewing about Oden on the opposite end of the spectrum, I DID NOT like how Gavin cut Wheels off and ended the call like he was some regular douche bag caller. That was disrespectful, running up against the break or not. He should have ended that conversation much differently.

Not the first time they were rude to a local sports personality
Yes they were rude to Brian Wheeler, but you can add to that list Todd Mansfield, Jay Allen, Antonio Harvey, Anthony Newman, and the entire 1080 crew.
I guess they just have a nack for making friends with fellow sports radio personalities in their market.
