I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Oden Predictions and score

9 Points – 3/4 from the free throw line.
7 Boards
2 Dunks
2 Blocks.

And the blazers win 99 to 95.

Also, Peja will go 5/7 from three point land.

Thoughts?

by TheWorkz on Nov 14, 2008 1:19 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think Oden's points and boards will be that high.

I’d say he plays 16-18 minutes with 6 points (2 from the line) and 5 boards. Dunks and blocks I’m with you though. He’s still not in good enough game shape to keep up with Chandler. when he first gets in he’ll get a couple boards and a dunk or two, then be winded and flat footed for a while. A couple more games and he’ll be putting up close to 10-10 though.

by DrivetheLane on Nov 14, 2008 1:26 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Probably right.

Ya, your probably right, but I’m an serious optimist. :) I definitely agree he will be huffing it up and down the court. It will take some time before he gets past that. I am just hoping some of that was because of an excess of adrenaline usage in his first game and points.

by TheWorkz on Nov 14, 2008 1:35 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

see, what i'd do

is only play Oden about 10 minutes tonight then play him close 20+ tomorrow night against the Wolves. That way, he gets the feel of a back to back, but has a better chance to play well against less talented big guys. If that happened, I’d say your predictions of 9-7 could happen against Minny.

by DrivetheLane on Nov 14, 2008 1:46 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he doesn't have to keep up with Chandler

he’ll be coming off the bench again and the Hornets have no bench.

good point.

But I still think he’s too far out of game shape at this point to put up more than 6-6 right now, even against bench players. Remember, he was playing against Miami’s bench too. I’d be very impressed if he gets 9+ points or 6+ rebounds.

yeah

but, remember how each pre-season game he slowly got better and better….i just think he is going to get better by the minute (litereally)……wed we saw 3-5 minutes of solid “oden” and it was great, and then blah…..i think we will see more like 5-7 minutes tonight, etc….its good that he plays against the bench cause chandler will push around to get those boards.

his old ways before Rudy played for the team the last 8 games?

You sound like you’re talking about Sergio. That would make more sense. And if you are talking about Sergio, then I’m with you. He played great last game and I think earned some extra minutes.

by DrivetheLane on Nov 14, 2008 1:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If Sergio keeps up this play

AND keeps hitting his shots, Blake will start feeling some heat. Not for starting (I think they’d love a Sergio-Rudy-Batum bench after Martell’s return), but just generally for minutes.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2008 1:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah, having Blake give up some minutes for Sergio would be ok.

maybe this sort of breakdown:

Blake plays the first quarter until there’s 2 minutes left. Then Sergio comes in and is replaced by Blake at the 5 min mark of the 2nd quarter. Blake starts the first 8 minutes of the 3rd quarter. Then Sergio till the quarter is over. The 4th quarter, as well all know, belongs to the Roy/Rudy backcourt. Though if Sergio is playing exceptionally well, then maybe keep him in, like in Miami.

we could win in LA and Bos and Utah. We could win the division and be higher than a 4 seed. We could go to the WCF. We could go undefeated at home. You know, that kind of stuff. Hornets 247 with a terrible preview

Schwan seems to think Bayless gets a lot of minutes and that Pritchard is a spoiled, reckless mess on draft day playing with Paul Allen’s money.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2008 1:31 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Hmm

What are these “other teams” you speak of!

That’s not really a fair representation of what I said in my preview. And yes, I knew a post that wasn’t fawning towards Pritchard would get a negative reaction from Blazers fans. I think Pritchard is a good GM, but your starting line-up is Blake-Roy-Batum-Aldridge-Przybilla. Yes, I know he’s created a magnificent bench – something I talked about in the post – but your starters really need to include some top-tier players. I see one there.

And ya, I’m a little down on Aldridge. I want him to prove me wrong. I liked him in college a lot.

http://www.hornets247.com

by Ryan Schwan on Nov 14, 2008 1:59 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Like I said below...

…your post came off like trolling for Blazer fans to get more hits. Nothing personal, if you want hits, you do what you need.

BTW you may not see LMA at his best tonight. He’s got a minor neck injury. He’s only getting around 16 and 10 since the injury, so he’s struggling.

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2008 2:01 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

regarding Aldridge...

… I’ve been frustrated with him. I want him to be an efficient 20/8 guy shooting over 50% from the field, and he isn’t quite there yet. He’s still a very good 3rd best player. The projections of the Blazers as a potentially great team down the road depend on a dominant Oden. That starting lineup starts to look a lot scarier if you imagine a 16/12/3 block guy in the middle, doesn’t it? Who knows when (if ever) that will happen, but its a little early to be giving up on Oden.

Your analysis of Pritchard and his “low reward” draft picks fails to give him credit for turning Telfair into Foye into Roy, Tyrus Thomas into Aldridge, the 24th pick in ‘07 into Rudy (#2 among SGs in PER right now), the 25th pick in ’08 into Batum and the 13th pick+Jarrett Jack into Bayless, a top 5 talent in last year’s draft.

KP has us set up for the long term

So saying our starting lineup isn’t great now is kind of missing the point of what he’s doing. It would be like saying the Celtics messed up because they’ll be in bad shape 3 years from now. If our lineup is terrible a few years from now, then you can call out KP.

Something about Przybilla in particular really pisses off Chandler and West. There are some unsubstantiated rumors that they feel he has too many consonants at the start of his name, but that may just be me being irritated at having to look up how to spell his name every time we play them

Apparently he didn’t look up how to spell it this time around.

There are issues with the preview in some ways...

But I don’t think he’s completely off base with all of his comments. I think he doesn’t do the best job of stating what his expectations are.

His comments on Pritchard seem to be almost entirely based on his lack of enthusiasm for Aldridge and Oden. He doesn’t really give any other specific reasons why he thinks Pritchard isn’t as good as most others have stated. He mentioned that he loves Roy, thinks the bench is great and says that Steve Blake is one of the most underrated PG’s in the league (which I happen to agree with.) But Oden hasn’t proven himself yet. That’s fair in a way, I guess. But how many players really prove themselves after two games? Aldridge is approaching a 20-10 average, which maybe 10 players a year end up with, but he does have a point when it comes to Aldridge’s inside game being a bit un-refined. He could also stand to improve his defense a little.

And, in his defense, he does state that he doesn’t think that Pritchard, Aldridge or Oden are all bad. He just says he needs more time before he says they’re as advertised. The problem is, he never says what he thinks they were advertised as. Does he really think anyone expected LMA to have Amare Stoudemire type numbers? I haven’t seen that. Seriously, not all rookies are like LeBron James or Chris Paul, and dominate the league immediately. I think his experience seeing CP3’s hyper-growth may be clouding his judgement of players on other teams just a bit.

Such is the world of sports journalism in the 21st Century.

For every one journalist that favors educated, well-supported and carefully constructed articles and opinions, there are at least 5 or 6 others who will say whatever will get them attention, regardless of its accuracy or lack thereof. I don’t mean to sound like a snob or anything and apologize if I do so, but the 24 hour sports news cycle and internet journalism have only increased the proportion of attention seeking journalism to educated journalism.

That’s why I appreciate this site so much. The good thing about sports blogs is that the cream does tend to rise to the top. It obviously has done so with this site, Truehoop and many others in the same network here.

Our bench needs to really shine for us to stay in this game

I know we’re on the road, but it also might help to run the snot out of them. We’re not a fastbreaking team, so how about a lot of motion on offense especially the guy who Chris Paul is guarding. I think CP is averaging nearly 40 minutes, maybe we can tire him out.

We have to make a run in the 2nd quarter when the Hornets rest their starters and we have to make Chris Paul a jumpshooter and not a passer.

WWKPD?

We could have had their point guard. Still makes me sad.

Oh well, the attractiveness of elected, rejected and precluded alternatives :)

by Norsktroll on Nov 14, 2008 2:28 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

We all do, don't worry.

But if we have Chris Paul, we wouldn’t have KP, and likely not Roy, Aldridge, and Rudy. (Hard to say on Oden, that was pure luck)

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2008 2:30 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If CP was here, Nash might still be.

If Nash was still here, we wouldn’t have any of those players. He was a terrible judge of talent. (If he’d have picked CP, it would have been luck)

We’d probably still make the playoffs (because CP makes everyone around him that much better), but we’d be stuck with a mediocre team because our GM couldn’t build around CP.

Chris Paul is something to watch...I live in ACC country

so he has been on the radar all along…should be an interesting night though…Rudy should keep him honest…he’s a real tough kid though…Earned my lifelong respect for punching Julius Hodge in the coconuts (ty TiH for the phraseology)…

Blazers will need six guys “on” tonight but I feel they can hang close and maybe pull this off…I agree Blazers bench play might be key in wearing NO down…

Long rebounds from bad jumpers will spell much trouble cause Paul is so fast…more reason for LMA and Frye and our resurgent GO to bang down low…

As the ambassador to MavsMoneyball: Wrong

Though even their most loyal fans are pretty down right now, the Mavs don’t get blown out in the games they lose. They looked good against LAL with a star player out. They can still turn it around with some adaptations. I wrote more about this in an answer to Tom here

Any sign Cuban might panic and pull off another trade if they don’t quickly improve?

by Timmay! on Nov 14, 2008 3:01 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not sure

He was against any major moves in the off-season, of course excluding the firing of Avery. Though reportedly Donnie Nelson (GM) tried to acquire Artest but the Kings wanted too much since the Mavs can’t offer picks right now. From everything he said so far I assume he will cling on to Kidd if only because shipping him out after a year would be to admit utter failure of the trade. If they do a trade at the deadline, it will rather involve Terry and Stackhouse than Howard, Kidd or Dirk.

The guys on the Mavs blog are giving them about 20 more games until they will get really frustrated. There are parallels. The season when they won 67 games started with a horrible stretch, but then they turned it completely around.

by prezofdeath on Nov 14, 2008 2:57 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I dunno

I’ll count ‘em out when they are out. I’d put them over the Nuggets, and until their mediocre play becomes the norm as opposed to the ’it’s just a slump’ feel of it now, I’ll count them as a playoff team.

Dirk’s game was nothing like Tom Chambers. Chambers was a high flying ballhog, Dirk is a sweet shooting mid-range team player. Both are white and blonde though, so there is that.

Vince and Kidd would make the playoffs, and they had not much else for sidekicks (aside from Jefferson of course). The Mavs got Josh Howard, Stackhouse, Jason Terry, Dampier, horribly inconsistent and supposedly super immature but extremely athletic Gerald Green, and known role players like Diop and Devean George.

Not a great team anymore (Terry and Stack seem to have lost a step, and obviously Kidd has), but I’d still say they are a playoff team… unless this current play keeps up, which who knows— it very well might.

But just like the Spurs, I won’t expect the Mavs demise to be on arrival until I see them out of the playoff race, mathematical style.

Mortimer

I rec'd you

Though the only thing known about Diop and George at the moment is that they stink. But Diop has promised today to only dunk when he is under the basket. He shot under 40% this season, so that would be a good thing.

by Norsktroll on Nov 14, 2008 3:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You're just trying to get back on my good side

Diop started off LAST season well, when Dampier was hurt… what happened?

I mean, there ain’t no reason he can’t be a Joel Przybilla type— taken waaay too high in the draft by another team, finds a home with a new team as a role player, just plays defense and blocks shots and rebounds and dunks the ball if no one is within 5 feet of him.

And well, at least ya KNOW George will suck. With crazy wacky youth, ya never know what’s gonna come out of ’em!

Has Gerald Green found a home there in Dallasiavillelandcity? Ya think people were upset by us drafting Martell over CP3, could you imagine if the original rumors were true and we took Gerald Green?! Thank God Green and his agent were idiots and wouldn’t work out for anyone, causing him to fall in the draft…

M—-O——R——T—-I—-M—-E————————————R

by Mortimer on Nov 14, 2008 3:30 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don’t know what happened to Diop. He was never good on offense, but at least he looked athletic compared to Damp, rebounded and blocked stuff. Now Damp grabs 16 boards and hammers home 18 points against a center-less Chicago team, and Diop looks slow and lost against the same guys. Maybe it’s because he got paid?

I won’t understand what they still see in George. He is obviously over the hump. He cost Cuban 11 million more in the Kidd deal, and gets rewarded with more money. It’s beyond me.

Green is the most spectacular player on the team. But that could be expected. What is more important is that he starts to use his athleticism the way he should to score points. He also is an underrated outside shooter. At the moment, I think he could become Dallas’ J.R. Smith. Whom by the way Hollinger declared the MIP this year, only to see him stutter into the season ;-)

by Norsktroll on Nov 14, 2008 3:40 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Green could always score

He averaged 10ppg or so his 2nd season in the league, with the Celtics.

His problem has been a severe case of low BBiQ, and no willingness to learn where to be and what to do on offense or defense. All he wanted to do was shoot the ball, which he could always do.

He had McGrady comparisons coming out of HS, but after a bit everyone decided he was too much of a pee-hole head to be a McGrady type.

If he doesn’t try to ‘get it’ now, after almost being entirely out of the league, he’ll never get it.

And if he DOES get it, the Mavs got a very high potential guy for very little. That’d be great for a team obviously getting too old to be a contender.

Also, it’s fair to point out Green scored those points when the Celtics were doing their famous tanking job, and he was allowed to just get on the floor and do whatever without regard for team play. Most HS kids are clueless about NBA level offense and defense, but are willing to learn… Green’s rep is that he never, ever tried and just relied on athleticism— which wasn’t at a Lebron level or anything, so it ain’t something to rely on.

He COULD be good though… what are the reports on him this season? Is his head on straight?

So… you better be more careful with what you say, Prez. Innocent people could get hurt and it’d be ALL. YOUR. FAULT.

No, my original question to Norsktroll about the Mavs was because they DO look so maddeningly mediocre right now… not the smooth running veteran team we’ve grown accustomed to, even with the Kidd trade. They should all know how to play and win by now, and they just haven’t looked very inspired.

I don’t expect it to last, because they DO got playoff level talent (until Dirk falls off the face of the planet, which he is still a few years from), but ya never know— veteran, older teams gotta die off someday.

Punishments for the Suns-Houston brawl are in. Too bad we don't play them now.

SAN ANTONIO – Rockets guard Rafer Alston received a two-game suspension on Friday for his role in the scuffle in the third quarter of Wednesday’s game in Phoenix, forcing him to miss tonight’s game against the Spurs and Saturday’s against the New Orleans Hornets.
Alston went after Suns forward Matt Barnes after Barnes hit him while Alston set a screen for Tracy McGrady. Both were ejected from the game.
Barnes also received a two-game suspension. Suns point guard Steve Nash was suspended for one game for his role in the shoving that followed the confrontation.
Suns center Shaquille O’Neal was fined $35,000 and McGrady received a $25,000 fine. O’Neal, Nash and McGrady received technical fouls.

that is a ridiculous argument

I understand the sentiment, however at some point the super-sensitivty to racial allusions have to go for true equality to reign. As long as the blackface is not done in traditional “black face” settings (read: minstrel show), i am not sure how its offensive an inappropriate.

#4 was tough.

seeing him in the Rockets jersey….oh well. at least he won a ring there.

  1. is why he’s called The Glide.

that was sweet, but that video in the side bar of the high school chick who can dunk it?

man that’s crazy

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

I have floor seats (3 rows behind Blazer Bench) when Golden State plays Portland on Tuesday…wanted to take pics and upload em during the game.

in the two games we played at their house.

Sure hope we turn that stat on its head this game.

we don't have JJack anymore so we can win

I remember last year, every time we played the hornet Wheels would mention that Jack hadn’t beat CP3 at home going back to their college days, and CP3 hadn’t beat Jack at home.

This thread needs more COWBELL!!

Jack looks good in Indiana right now. Also no more stepping on the line :)

They lead Philly 13-38 at the moment, and he makes some great plays. Long time I think B-Rex is a significant upgrade. Short term, Indy didn’t do bad in that deal.

but Oden has more experience in that. So far, edge Oden.
