Play Bayless or Die

Look I like Blake.  I do.  But if we pull another Dunleavy on Bayless (aka Jermaine O'Neill) on the bench to rust until he is traded to another team where he is going to explode into dominance I will destroy you ALL!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

I can't stand it.  It's driving me nuts.  We are not getting to the finals this year.  If we don't develop our young talent, WE NEVER WILL!

And Sergio, tell your agent to sit down and SHUT IT!

we are no longer in rebuilding mode

we are in “make the playoffs” mode. I have full confidence that Nate will play Bayless if and when he beats someone out for their rotation spot. Until then, I have no problem with him riding pine.

Hey Ben!

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Not very Bayless like of you

Bayless wouldn’t show excitement like that. He would saunter cooly, then break anyone’s neck who disagreed with the post……….with nothing but a cold glare….which is the same as his happy glare…which is the same has his angry glare….etc.

OT

about bayless…

When he steps into the gym, he glares. When he warms up, he glares. When he cuts to the basket, his body glares at the defense, offended by their weak attempts to stop his advances. When he jumps, his body glares at gravity.

I like it.

I love teases…i just suck at giving them. Everytime I give a tease for something I’m working on, I end up abandoning the thought and the tease never becomes reality. it’s really unfair to all the teasees.

Sophia, if you’re out there, my apologies. I teased a Nate McMillan fanpost a long time ago and I still haven’t done squat with it.

I can't wait to see him

I think Bayless is going to be dominate on the defensive end once he gets a feel for what he can and can’t get away with as far as contact.

He’s fearless and his ability to get into the lane with ease will be a great asset.

We have the shooters and the big men to take advantage of that…….can you imagine and end of game line up with Bayless, Roy, Rudy, Aldridge and Oden?

i know bayless is only a rookie

but jermaine played behind all star…bayless is playing behind 2 guys who don’t really have the confidence of the entire fanbase as longterm solutions at the position.

he played behind 3 real quality players

The Rasta, the Sheed and the Bonis…hmm maybe I shouldn’t have written Bonis, any ways that was a completely different team, coach, and management. and if it takes 3 years for J-Bay like it did for O’Neal and if we start hearing things like Bayless beating up on our other guards like we heard from Sheed and other people who would watch practice about O’Neal, then I think we start to complain…just not now in middle of a 4 game win streak.

The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

I *almost* hate sergio,

because he’s playing good enough to keep Bayless out of the rotation. Note i did say almost. It almost feels like the situation where we didn’t draft MJ because we had Clyde, and we knew what Clyde would give us, but we didn’t know what MJ the rook would do.

by premthegrem on Nov 14, 2008 1:38 AM PST reply actions

No kiddin'

Sergio is clearly the MJ of 3rd string point guards!

I want whoever is giving us more of what we need to play. Bayless has plenty of time left on his rookie deal.

I like Bayless

I think he will actually be a great player. A Monta Ellis who can defend.

On most teams his non-PGness would be a minus, but on a team with Roy and Rudy it’s actually a plus— a guy who can shoot and penetrate when we need him to and play off of the ball, but also defend the opposing PG so our real playmakers in Roy and Rudy are free to not have to.

I don’t worry about Bayless at all. In fact, the only thing I worry about is that he will become too good to be a 5th option on a winning Blazers team. After we’ve won for a while, he’s proved he is a real talent but not more important to the team than Oden/LMA/Roy/Rudy, I could see him wanting to be a star on his own team.

Time will tell though, and it’s a good ‘problem’ to have. Maybe he becomes so good we CAN’T lose him, but I predict it’ll be that grey area where he is undoubtedly talented, but undoubtedly not so much better as to give him a bigger role at the expense of Roy/Rudy/LMA/Oden.

Even though I think he’ll be really good, as long as Sergio is giving us more of what we need in the 2nd unit, I am totally for Sergio to play ahead of Bayless. He’s earned it. Now, I still think he is way mad overrated by certain segments of the Blazers Edge populace and that he has such massive holes in his game that I worry they’ll ever be closed even a smidgeon, but what he does (pass) he does extremely well.

I’d feel better about Sergio if the assists led to layups and dunks like Nash does, and not a series of mid-range jumpers and three’s, but that’s largely because his defender doesn’t have to defend him to score and only has to defend him to pass. Nash can score as well as anyone if they play him to pass, so you’re damned if ya do damned if ya don’t. I know shooting is one of the most basic skills anyone can improve on with enough work (and I mean nearly ANYONE can), but Sergio is sooooooo bad at shooting that you wish he could be half as good as Jason Kidd out there.

And unlike Kidd in his prime, Sergio will never be great defensively. Once Oden is in shape, I hope Sergio is let loose to just ballhawk and take risks in the passing lanes to get some defensive juice out of him. I bet he could do that.

Bayless is the rookie, 20 years old, on a talented team. If he is good, he’ll get his shot and make the best of it. Our team is winning, doing well, and developing Bayless in actual games isn’t necessary right now. Sergio has been a game changer and attacked the enemy 2nd units really well, so I see no reason to change it up now.

I think sitting will only help Bayless… keep him hungry and working on the other parts of his game.

Solid Points.

I think Bayless will BECOME a great player in this league. Right now, as much as I hate to say it, he needs to improve his defense. Not his on ball D, but his understanding of the schemes involved and where he should be when he is weakside. Having a decent feel for Coach Mac’s decision making on PT, he obviously favors the vets, but more so he favors solid defense. If Bayless could provide that I think Mac would be willing to let him make the necessary mistakes on offense to improve. Let’s be real, the only way to improve your NBA game is to play in a live NBA game. Riding the bench and being a warm body in practice is great, but unitl you feel the intensity and anxiety of live action, you don’t truly know how you will react.

My vision for the upcoming games is to have the Blazers figure out how to keep the early lead they have been getting and build on it going in to the fourth quarter. I think coach would be much more willing to send in Bayless if we had a comfortable lead. So his progress will only be made possible by the rest of the team getting comfortable playing with a lead. So far the team hasn’t felt entitled to the lead and we relinquish it in the third and drop back into our comfort zone of close, gutty wins. With a few more of these gut-in-out wins I think we will slowly start to realize that we ARE GOOD and deserve to win every night. The ‘young’ label has begun to inhibit their progress, at least mentally, and as soon as we can shed that image of ourselves the better off we will be.

Bayless is a great talent, and personally, I would love to see him on the floor, but as some of you mentioned above, we ARE playing for the playoffs….THIS year. I just have to continiue to re-up on my trust in Nate and believe that Bayless’ deficiencies on D outweigh his benefits on O, and until this changes he won’t see the light of day. Now all we need is some gabage time for the young fella.

I don't think he will see action against the Hornets

But he might (might) in the second game against Minnesota, or against Sacramento (2 games) or Chicago. Rose and Gordon torch bad guard defenses right now, I watched the Dallas game today. At least I hope to see him a bit this month

by Norsktroll on Nov 14, 2008 3:55 AM PST reply actions

What up wit' Dallas, yo?

They’re your “other” team, right?

Are they as bad as their record, or is it circumstances?

I’ve only seen them a little bit this year, and they’ve looked more mediocre than I think they wanted me to think they looked.

Is there a chance that it ain’t the Nuggets who miss the playoffs, but the Mavs? Or (God save me for even thinking it a possibility), the Spurs? Am I hijacking the post now?

Why’re the Mavs being so stinky pants?

I was in last night's game day thread against the Bulls over at MavsMoneyball

Like I said to twiggs in the junk drawer, I felt like the most optimistic guy for the team in the room ;-)
At the end of the game (which was very winnable but they screwed a lead and never came back) they were discussing whether to draft Rubio, DeRozan or someone else. I highly doubt they will even be a lottery team and still have them at 7 in the West. The Bulls commentators were trashing them the whole game for not protecting the inside (as if their team didn’t stink last season and just lucked into Rose), then at the end one admitted he has them at 6 and the other at 5.

It’s not like the Mavs are getting blown out. They looked good against the Lakers despite Josh Howard out with a small injury – better than the Blazers – yet unfortunately that was the game Dirk decided to not show up.
The Dirk – Howard – Kidd axis looks pretty solid. I would not have traded for Kidd, but he still can pass like few people, rebound and score inside (had another triple double against Denver). But they still have a lot of issues that would need to be fixed to make them a contender again. And I fear that won’t work on a team that is completely over the cap, hasn’t had a good pick in years and spends the owner’s money on wrong people (Devean George anyone?).
They still don’t run a lot despite all claims to the contrary by the coaching staff, which would make Kidd much more valuable. Basically they still have the most overpaid center combo in pro basketball. Dampier tries hard, but he just will never be worth 10 million. Diop looks slow, bad and not dangerous on offense. He now also air-balls free throws. Did I mention they pay him the full MLE? Besides that, they need to find a good shooting guard among the selection they have. I think it will be athletic swingman Gerald Green come January with Terry off the bench as the sixth man to spell him or Kidd, but the coach is not trusting Green yet completely and experiments with Stackhouse (looks done on most nights) and Wright (not that talented but a decent defender). And the drop from Kidd to Barea as PG backup is massive. People here would hate Barea if he was a Blazer. Sergio might really help there :)

The game where Rex needs to play is MINNESOTA...

…………………………. That’s a potentially winnable road back-to-back (a rarity!) but I know Nate and he’ll go down with the ship and his 10 man rotation in the 4th Quarter — the legs will go and the Blazers will lose it.

What he NEEDS to do is run Rex EARLY and for TONS OF MINUTES and save Brandon for the second half. Then he’ll have gas in the tank to finish it.

Road back-to-backs are enormously predictable games though. I don’t think there’s a single coach in the league that understands how to use the complete roster for max effect in those — and the road team ALWAYS fades in the 4th Q.

I agree.

Minnesota is very beatable, and all their strengths are their forwards, not their guards.

Bayless

He reminds me of a much better version of Jarrett Jack. I am sure he will get playing time, but he needs to learn the system and learn how to pass. Sure he can play scrappy, score and defend (at least in Summer league), but can he get the team involved?
