Colin Cowherd take on Oden
Hey everybody this is my first post and I hate to start out like this but I was Curious if anyone had herd colin's 6 minute take on Oden. I will leave a link where you can go and listen.... Its probably not what a lot of you want to hear but I suppose he is entitiled to his own opinion. I tend to agree with a few of his points as I was a little dissapointed with Greg last night. I think he will be a great inside presence (rebounding and D) but I don't see him reaching the ranks of the elite big Men at least on offense. I see him as more like a mutombo/Ben Wallace (the pistons days) type guy. I think if he could get more agressive, get better movement on the long boards, and stop letting other players knock the ball out of his hands on rebounds we will be in great shape on the inside. Blazers have a ton of scorers and the occassional put back dunk would just be a bonus. Sorry if I sound like i'm a greg basher. The truth is I like him a lot I think if he can do what a mentioned above he will be a key player in making the blazers a serious contender in the future.I Just think there was too much hype and a notion that Greg actually had a real post game besides the dunk. anyway just wanted to hear if anyone herd the "heard" radio show today and what they thought? Here is the site http://espnradio.espn.go.com/espnradio/show?showId=theherd look to the left hand side under show in review and click this section( You can hide flaws in hockey and the NFL -- but in basketball, you can't hide. There are only ten guys on the floor at once. No hiding allowed. Greg Oden will never been an offensive star in the NBA. Rudy Fernandez is the star in Portland -- not Greg Oden. Not a star

one last thing
I’m not a big fan of colins show just happened to catch it on my drive, and just happened to agree with a little bit of what he had to say not all of it. I actually find him arrogant most of the time!
I hope Greg listens to that before every game
And after each dunk, he yells….“Herd! I’m coming for you Herd! I’m coming for you!!”
Just some added motivation for Oden
As if he didn’t need anymore…
I can’t dispute his observations from the game last night, but I must say that first impressions are overrated. Sure they help, but they are not the end-all like Coherd claims. All I have to say is Dwight Howard. He couldn’t hit the side of a barn his first few years in the league. I expect much of the same out of Oden, defensive beast and rebounding machine in his first few years. His point in that we don’t need him contributing much on offense now is well taken, but I’m definitely giving the kid a chance to grow into his game.
Does anyone else think that if Stan Van Gundy got a perm he’d be Ron Jeremy?

Didn't hear it;
However, after taking in all of the things that have been said about Oden from the media and others. I personally choose to believe only things mentioned about him by those that are actually seeing him day in and day out in practice. Namely his teammates, Blazers coaches, and front office.
Not the media.
Sorry, but the media isn’t exactly right all the time, neither are we for that matter.
BROY says that Oden is gonna be better than Dwight Howard. Read the post. Why would Brandon just spout off about something like that. Truth is, Oden didn’t do much the other night… Offensively… (Nobody is denying he’ll be a great defender, media or otherwise) Plus, its obvious that he will be able to move much better when he gets in shape. Of course he can dunk it. Yet until he gets his quickness back, teams are gonna be able to easily deny him position down low enough to get those.
He did show a nice quick move into a hook on the right side of the basket last night. Yeah that didn’t go in, but that move is starting to look way nicer than the first time he played. I am willing to bet that Brandon has seen him tear that up in practice. The jump hook by a 7 footer, who can make enough space to get it off just by using his body is pretty much unstoppable when he gets the ball close enough for a high percentage shot. That, plus his D, plus his potential speed that he once had, (and will get back) alone makes a really scary center.
Sheesh
It would take an extraordinarily lack of skill to be as bad as Mutumbo and Ben Wallace on defense, and I think that’s selling Oden wholly short. That’s just such a horribly bad comparison. Oden at least has foot work. If you are gonna compare him to Ben Wallace on offense, you might as well go all out and compare him to gulp Kwame Brown. That’s how bad Ben Wallace was offensively, and there is no way that Oden is that bad. Not even close.
I reckon that once he gets his conditioning around, people will realize that he has more offensive skill than Howard did in his rookie year.

good point
one of the coaches mentioned Oden’s footwork as well. Way better than many centers in the NBA today, and Oden only has room to grow. I’m not saying Greg Oden is the next Wilt, but he does have good footwork…better than Ben Wallace.
I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Err. One correction!
It would take an extraordinarily lack of skill to be as bad as Mutumbo and Ben Wallace on defense
That should be OFFENSE.

?
I don’t think anyone is really comparing Greg to Ben but I think people see them having the same type of role. I would take Ben When he was playing great! most championship teams have “that guy”. Greg will be better on offense for sure just by default but if he could match that kind of intensity on D and rebounding it would be enough I think to make this team a contender. I just think the comparisons are more on roles not actual skill if that makes sense
You did preface his comparison of Mutumbo/Wallace by saying he will never be a great offensive player like former bigs:
I think he will be a great inside presence (rebounding and D) but I don’t see him reaching the ranks of the elite big Men at least on offense. I see him as more like a mutombo/Ben Wallace (the pistons days) type guy.
Hence why I took your statement as saying he will be like Ben Wallace on offense.

Good point
I guess it appears that way, but not what i wanted to say for sure. I have seem wallace air ball a free through on too many an occasion to put Oden in that category. I just meant they could have a similar role. I do see greg making a few of those hooks through a game but I just think he will rebound rebound and dunk those many rebounds back down for the most part I guess.
I love Herd....but his take is way off on this one
he’s had so many guys come in…scouts, coaches, GMs, and he’s constantly peddling his GREG ODEN IS BEN WALLACE theorem, and I think it was…dang…who was it…..some retired player or coach and he said comparing Greg Oden to Ben Wallace is an insult of mammoth proportions. No offense to Ben, but Oden is already better as a center than Ben was. Ben was a scrappy short guy who worked to get rebounds. Oden gets them naturally just from his size. If he adds even a hair of athleticism, he’s far above and beyond Wallace.
I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Someone should sneak it into the pregame or his ipod before Friday nights game. In seriousness though he does make a few good points even though I hate to give it to him since he thinks he knows all. Bill Simmons sounds like he is a bit harsh though his words may have been taken out of context. I agree that first impressions are overrated most of the time but I do agree that the truly great players (i’m talking Lebron great) show what will separate them from the rest even if it doesn’t translate into a great game, you can tell they have that something special.
Point well taken about the media and those around him knowing more.
He will be great one way or another
Don’t take me wrong I was just speaking of the hype that he may be a player like that. (lebron, next wilt ect)
I do think he will prove to be a great playe and wise pick for the blazers when its all said in done but I agree with herd that his role might be differen’t that some thought but not unimportant.
amar'e
someone mentioned that amar’e (i think thats the way he’s spelling his name now!?) did not look good at all when he first came back after his surgery. It took him a while to get his lift and speed back. I think it will take a while but if Oden can move like he did in the one or two summerleague games he played in last year he will be great. He needs to get his head right also, I would like to see him crack a smile on the court, at least get excited and loose.

yep
thats right. the season that he got his microfracture, he returned for 3 games i think. he didnt look good. the season after that amare still wasnt all the way back from MF surgery.so please people just be patient. the oden we have all been waiting for will come around.
Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Tell him what he's won!
If I was a media mogul, you’d be a handsomely paid radio personality right now, since you have a sense of the painfully obvious that Colin Cowherd utterly lacks.
One’s first impression of ANY NBA great ever would be entirely different if said player was making his debut coming off of microfracture. For example, I remember vividly how dominant Shaq was starting out, but that surgery would have rendered him earthbound in the fall of 1992 or ‘93; of that I have no doubt. You’d think Cowherd might take this into consideration, but as is often the case with his type, common sense takes a backseat to sheer bluster.

Too early
It’s way to early to draw conclusions on Greg’s game or potential. This is a 20 year old out-of-shape guy coming off knee surgery. At the very least, let’s see 25 games.
I’ve seen enough to conclude that he isn’t going to have Hakeem like offensive production in the next few years, but really, what else can we legitimately deduce from 29 minutes of playing time over two games?

I'd be surprised if we ever see a Hakeem-esque offensive big in the NBA in our lifetime again

Dream Shake
That’s all i got to say! do yourself a favor and search online for his highlight against Robinson. I truly doubt we see another big that moves like that.
He reminds me (maybe everyone) of Robert Parish.
Parish started out averaging 10points/10 rebounds and slowly worked himself up to 20 and 10 after a few years. He anchored to the defense in the middle and blocked a lot of shots. I think Oden might be a better passer, but they have similar games.

I'm simply amazed by how much is known by so many after
watching a guy play for 29 minutes after a 500 day layoff and major surgery.
yep. its amazing how fast these pundits come to their conclusions re: Oden's ceiling.
The funniest thing was the piece by David Thorpe on Truehoop saying that Oden will never be a competent player.
Then when he saw Oden practicing with the team before the Heat game he backtracked.

Yeah, they are trying to have it both ways.
Oden is underwhelming… but he looks like a seven foot Ben Wallace. How is that underwhelming? That sounds terrifying.
by Nick Van Excellent on Nov 14, 2008 1:55 AM PST up reply actions
he's a coward
for trying to project somebody based on 30 minutes of play.
Rememeber how terrible Amare looked coming off microfracture?
It will take time. People that are Cowardly will be taking this back a year or two from now. But what do they care? They just want to amp up ratings for their show.
I don't know if he's a "coward".
He’s just a guy with an opinion. That’s not cowardly, dastardly, chickenhearted, or yellow-bellied, it’s just an opinion. (stupid opinion though it may be)
I think Oden is going to be a lot like Robert Parish. Great defensively right from the start with offensive skills that develop slowly. There is nothing wrong with being a defensive minded big man. Parish was a hall of famer and one of the 50 greatest of all time.

I think it was a play on his name

yeah, I meant that he is a Cowherd (sic?) in that he will do anything
to ramp up ratings for his show.
Sorry, my bad, I guess I’m a bad speller.

You can tell immediately if a player will be a star. No you can't.
He claims Kobe Bryant was “special” the first time he saw him running up the floor. No he was not. That’s not your memory speaking but seeing him as a star player now for years and years! In his first two years, he rarely started. For good reasons. I remember his first playoff series, and he shot horrible air-balls you would never see from him now again. You might also remember he won the MVP award in his first season. Or at least the Rookie of the Year. False memories. He won nothing. He was “All-Rookie Second Team”. Because people had better first impressions of Allen Iverson (ROY), Marcus Camby, Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Stephon Marbury (yeah, that Marbury) and — wait for it — Antoine Walker. First impressions can be so wrong it’s not even funny.

Colin sucks, still sucks, and always has sucked
a fat one. I’ve spoken with him before, and he’s truly as smarmy as he comes across on radio. He’s what the younguns call a ‘jerk-off’
