Blazers-Miami Game thoughts

Overall it was a decent game during stretches, but there were periods during the game that where we looked lost and confused. Hopefully, the team is learning how to deal with changing defenses as the season goes on, because other teams will take much more advantage of that than Miami was able to. Wade got his 4th 30 point night and lucky for us, nobody else was stroking it.

Oden looked very mediocre tonight. I expected to see  much more. Other than a few blocks, he seemed a little out of position defensively and a step slow. I think there is too much thinking going on up there. He just needs to play basketball. I'd have to give a C for this outing. Note to Greg - pass out of the double team right away. He doesn't seem to appreciate the skill of the other teams defense. You aren't in Ohio anymore....this is the NBA.

The last 4 minutes were painful. What's the deal with trying to milk the clock and not lose. I'd like to know what Nate's game plan was at that time because 3 possessions in a row were: take the ball up slowly, dribble, wait for the shot clock to lapse to 6 seconds, take a contested desperation shot as the clock winds down......ahhhhhhh.

Can we now stop saying that Rudy can't create his own shot.....PLEASE! What's a Spaniard gotta do to get some shot creating love?

Did someone make a mistake on the boxscore? Nearly 19 minutes for Sergio! He looked pretty decent although he wasn't going up against any kind of "Championship Defense"

Roy and Rudy won this game tonight.

Cheers

This was an even more professional game than Orlando

People are going to be frustrated with some of the turnovers we made, and some were bad, but overall we controlled the tempo and the game itself for about 43 of 48 minutes.

That’s damn good basketball.

This was a MUCH more convincing win IMO than Orlando, and the Orlando win was fairly convincing. Chalking up a loss at NO, then we can shoot for two more to finish 4-1. :D

Note about greg too

Greg looked fairly decent IMO all thigns considered. Nothing remarkable, but he altered shots, took away lanes and created double teams, (although he couldn’t capitalize).

Had a couple of brain-dead plays on defense, but mostly a solid showing for someone you’re easing back into the game.

by JordanLeDoux on Nov 12, 2008 8:10 PM PST up reply actions

he did change the game

sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. He did draw double teams, which looked like it surprised him (me too – he hadn’t even scored an NBA basket and was doubled?). When the play came at him, his defense was good; reacting to something behind him, not so much.

More than anything else, he looked like he has to find his way in the offensive sets, get his stamina back, and play with less inhibition. I liked what I saw, in general

I agree

his basketball conditioning isnt here yet, but I thought it was a fairly good outing. Even though he was realy only effective for the first two minutes both times her came in. real heavy feet towards the end of his playing time

He looked like a punk @$$ rookie

He wasn’t up to the speed of the game and he looked tired after about five minutes of play. This too shall pass.

I couldn’t be happier that he didn’t start. He’s kind of JaMarcus Russell’y. I think Oden will be starting in about 10 games though. He needs to be less passive and get in game shape.

OT: Can I do that “@$$” thing? It’s following the rules but also seems like cheating.

I'd just like to see him jump for defensive rebounds.

A few occasions I remember seeing him just stand flat footed and reach in the air for the ball only to see a Miami player grab it.

My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.

On Oden

He had 2 blocks in 16 minutes. He clearly looked out of shape and like he was confused during a number of sets. When he gets his wind back he will be devastating defensively that was something that was apparent even with him incredibly out of shape. He looked like he had slimmed down his frame a bit and it looked great. I was hoping for more but I saw enough to know he will be a huge asset down the road.

Right in fact

he should have gotten three as he swatted one in rhythm during a possible and 1 situation. I see him getting 4 blocks a game potentially once he gets in shape and gets heavy minutes. I’m not saying he averages 4 blocks just that he will regularly get 4+ blocks in a game.

In the last two games, the Blazers have taken control in the 4th Quarter. That’s what good teams do to win games, and to do so on the road is huge.

in the context of the game

i dont think he did as poorly as his stats show…the heat clearly wanted to take him out of the game and kept on doubling him and giving him all kinds of pressure. when they left him with only 1 defender in the post, he made them pay. he did have some brain farts and botched dunks, but i don’t think his mistakes really ever costed us the game.

he definitely contributed during our stretch where our most effective unit was in the game (Serg, Rudy, Frye, Trout, LMA)

N.O. the ultimate test?

I strongly disagree. This game was the ultimate test.

When you go on the road to Orlando and N.O., you can play great and still lose. You hope to get some of those, but they aren’t really the test of whether you are a good team or not, because even the elites lose those games often enough.

The real test of a good team is going on the road and beating average teams. Average teams win their home games. Good teams protect the home court and can beat the average teams on the road half the time. Miami is probably a mid-level team, weak on the road and tough at home. We beat them, and it didn’t look like an accident. We passed the test, we are a good team right now.

Losing at N.O. will prove nothing one way or another. Winning will just prove what we already proved in Orlando — on our night, we can even beat the top teams on the road.

why leave Travis in

I’d guess that decision comes down to Travis’ experience. I like Batum starting but feel very confident with having Travis finish. He came thru with a nice driving layup late and some key boards. Too early to put a rook in a tight game late.

Travis is hte man in the 4th Quarter

he proved that last year. He has the expereince and knows how to take big shots and win games. Tonight he was out there to spread the floor when Roy or Sergio drove the lane and hit the three if he was open. I like him out there in the 4th

What I don't get

Is that he’s supposed to be a “defensive minded coach” but he ends games with his offense on the court. That’s a good way to end a football game, but I’m not sure if it’s a good idea in basketball games. It’s working, so I will not complain.

by tominhawaii on Nov 12, 2008 8:42 PM PST up reply actions

although we were protecting a lead

we tend to go iso with roy late in games and having both batum and sergio in the lineup would have made it tougher on roy to score.

Protecting a lead

Two ways to do this:
1. Stop the other team from scoring a lot.
2. Score a lot.

When the other team has Wade, and he’s on fire (as he has been for four straight games now), you aren’t likely to be able to stop them from scoring too effectively. Option 2 made more sense.

even if he is

At least his value is rising. I like Sergio’s game and I kind of hope we don’t trade him. However the fact is that eventually we will need to consolidate our roster. Right now we are three deep at PG, three deep at SF(when Webster gets back) and three deep at PF (not including Randolph) and none of that includes the amount of time that we have two SG in at the same time in Roy and Rudy.
The scary thing is, let say we trade 1 PG, 1 SF, 1 PF, and RLEC all for just one quality player. We will still be pretty stacked.
Hypothetical
Sergio
Outlaw
Frye
RLEC
All traded for a starting PG to be named later
We then will still have Bayless with out any playing time

If we trade it for a Starting SF
Batum or Webster has no playing time

If we trade it may have to be BLOCK BUSTER! Or we still will be in a number crunch.

The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

by Blazermaniac77 on Nov 12, 2008 10:25 PM PST up reply actions

3 deep at the point?

I assume you mean Bayless as the teams 3rd pg. Depth isnt a word that seems to work for me. I still think any trade destroys the team chemistry thats already in place and would be an unnecessary gamble. PG may be the teams “weakest” position, but Blake and Sergio dollar for dollar are good fits, just like Web and Trout, both of them are signed to deals that fit in the PTB scheme for several years. I do not believe KP has a win it all now by making a blockbuster trade; that was the Bob Whitsett philosophy and look how that worked out. Its hard for many fans to be patient, but most of those fans are of the chocolate chip cookie variety if you get my drift.

Lord, help me to be the kind of person my psychiatrist medicates me to be

by bow4meow on Nov 13, 2008 7:43 AM PST up reply actions

I wasn't arguing FOR a trade

And yes I would call the point position 3 deep (and I’m sure all the Bayless future PG of the PTB fan club would agree) at least in wanting PT. I would also agree that TO and Marty are both good fits, but what do we do with Batum then?
I love the way the team is playing, and I’d hate to see any of these guys go, especially with the chemistry they are all showing. But I go back to what I said before, EVENTUALY they will have to consolidate the roster, because if you think that this team will look the same in two years you are crazy! We have a lot of cap coming this summer, and we have a lot of young talent that other teams will want.
I know we are we are on a win streak, but we can get better, and if KP doesn’t look to get better, then he’s not doing his job. We have too many talented players and not enough playing time. If nothing is done eventually two things will happen either if at some point we don’t trade some of these players they will just leave and we‘ll get nothing for them. Or the lack of PT for some of these players will hurt the chemistry (which I would call natural, for people of this talent and bright futures).
Like I said, I love this team, and it’s players but at some point in order to get better we will need to do something. But for right now lets get hyped for N.O. cheer for every player on the team and be glad that we are in this type of position to be huge fans for the most exiting team in the NBA. Go Blazers!

The pictures kinda small, but Im giving the C's a big thumbs down

by Blazermaniac77 on Nov 13, 2008 10:14 AM PST up reply actions

I didnt say you were arguing for a trade

I was referring to the countless posts clamoring for a trade, as I have done many times.
Not to split hairs here, we seem to be in general agreement. As to Bayless, I hesitate to call him a true PG, as he comes across as a scorer more then a distributor. Time will tell, but its hard to define his true role without his getting any significant minutes.
As to the look of the team in a couple years, again, time will tell. I see a solid core of players KP has built up. The versatility of having so many good players at SF might be deceiving. Web signed a bargain basement deal to stay with the PTB, as did Outlaw, when both of them on the open market likely would have fetched more bank elsewhere. The beauty of these guys is although they have traditionally defined labels, they also can slide up or down a position as Nate sees fit.
Sure KP is entertaining every and all trade offers, but at the same time, he is in no hurry to deal these guys for the next big thing. Seems almost every current Blazer with the exception of Sergio has come out and stated they have a desire to continue to play for Portland, and they most of all recognize that means sacrificing minutes for a greater good. If there’s one element this team isnt over-loaded on its ego.

Only one guys who really comes to mind as to possible trade value rather then let go with nothing to show, and thats Channing Frye and Bayless. I have nothing to base that on besides feeling however. The other obvious roster spots to go include RLEC and Randolph. Its only one cats opinion though and I respect yours as well, even if Im not sold.

Im glad the enthusiasm has returned until our next two game losing streak, and you’re absolutely right to focus our energy for tomorrow nights game.

Go Trail Blazers!

We were struggling a bit with Roy at the 1…but Nate made the adjustment after a few possessions and Sergio took over as 1. I like Sergio…but if he isn’t going to be the PG, its kind of useless for him to be there. I’d rather have Blake in for his shooting. Sergio wasn’t hurting us with his defense, so I guess Nate was rewardsing him.

I knid of liked Sergio in there in the 4th

he has a great ability to penetrate into the lane and kick it out for open threes. Plus there are a lot more better defensive shooting guards than there are pgs.

I think Nate is still tinkering and trying to figure out which lineups work best in the 4th. And hey, we are still winning while he is tinkering!

our offense has struggled in 4th qs this year…especially when there has been no ball movement. thats why a lot of our large leads get dwindled down by the end of the game. the game was close, but i’m just glad it hasn’t been as close as some of the games we’ve recently had. sergio has had 4th quarter stints in like 4 or 5 of the games this year…but he’s never really had crunch time minutes before…hell i think he only had crunch time minutes once last year (against atl). i hope he can keep it up.

Why has Roy coughed up the ball in crunch time over the last few games?

It seems he’s not protecting the ball as well as he used to….or was he always getting his pocket picked?

Even the superstars have turnovers...

what is amazing is how low Roy’s turnovers are given the amount of time he has the ball in his hands

because he is

the number 1 and number two and possibly number 3 focus for all defenses against us.

Teams know about Roy now. He’ll figure it out, but until then… he’s going to have a rough start. Rudy and others excelling are going to help brandon as well.

Wade hacked Roy on that one steal out top

He reached in and made plenty of contact. That’s a sure foul call—unless you’re a superstar playing down the stretch at home. I think Roy realized that, so he didn’t even protest the non-call.

Interestingly,

This game turned out similar to Orlando’s in terms of the lead changes. We got out to a big lead at the end of the first, miami closed in to 3 at the half, took the lead after 3 quarters, and then we powered back to an 8 pt win. Similar things in the Orlando game, winning the first and fourth, losing the second and third.

When Oden came in the first time, our defense was great.

Our offense started to sputter. We would pass to Greg, he’d wait for the double team to get there ( I would have liked to see him just go at the hoop before the double team came), and then we relied on the outside shot in the second quarter…instead of getting the easy points inside. Go figure.

oden will be fine

i dont mind if he gets 8pts and 5 boards a game, as long as hes contesting shots and forcing opponents into shooting lower % shots, stuff that doesnt appear in stats but helps us win games.

I can't believe Oden's conditioning

He looks absolutely gassed after running up and down the court a couple times. It’s not like he’s active out there moving and jumping around. Someone buy him the Gazelle from Tony Little.

I didnt think so

Oden played alot longer then expected, and Rice and Barrett commented he didnt look immediatly winded, but after that long first stretch they said he was gassed. Its going to take Oden, like anyone, time to get in basketball shape.

What I liked

crisp ball movement at times.
easy scoring.
rebounding like crazy
oden in play
team work
inside game

What I didn’t like

stalled ball movement
protecting the lead with four freaking minutes to go
lack of rebounding
lack of inside game
oden was ugly

I’m happy. We’ve improved a LOT over that utah game that would have had me ticked even if we won. Oden stunk, but I actually expect that. I could have drafted oden in fantasy league and didn’t because he’s NOT starting the year burning up the league. I didn’t think he was this far behind, but I knew he wasn’t super far ahead. The END of teh season is when we’ll see the beast that is Oden.

So we had ups and downs. We’re young and that’s to be expected. We’ve improved and we’re winning teams by decent margins now. Not this one poitn luck crud.

It’s obvious nate is still also feeling out his line up. I like what’s going on and I’m very hopeful it’ll click in about ten games.

Minutes

I really like the minute distribution. Everybody got some good time in to showcase what they could do and the look changed often enough that Miami didn’t know what to expect. What I see happening is Oden slowly eating into Pryz’s minutes as he gets in game shape, but everybody had a chance to play and do what they do best.

Hopefully the Blazers will be happy with this distribution until Martell get’s back.

Of course I would love to see Bayless and Ike out there as they would only be playing in garbage time and hopefully mopping up a big win.
