Thread of Gameday Openness: Blazers vs. Heat

Oden is back!  Oden is back!  He's on the second unit, but Oden is back!

Wow...a nearly full roster!  (We're looking at you, Martell.)

This is the place to speculate about the game beforehand plus ranting (refs) and raving (Rudy) during.

Please no pictures posted in the thread and don't forget to turn off member pictures and/or auto-updating comments if the thread gets slow.  We'll add another for the second half as usual.  (Can't wait until the tech guys come up with their ultimate speed-up-Gameday-Threads fix.)

Oden = 23 minutes, no injuries.

Book it.

Mine showed first on my screen, even after I left and came back to this page and posted that second comment above at 11:38.

I was number one… and I had it taken from me!

How does that work?

I have no idea

I notice the same thing happens when Rudy makes a big play and everyone goes RUUUUUUUUUUUDYYYYY

Mine is almost always first on my screen, even though in reality i’m sure some of you guys hit the post button before me. Something about the way SBNation does their comment posting.

Its important to keep the mojo between LMA and Roy

it seemed like from the 11 minutes in LA that we got to see greg play on the first unit, everyone was out of rythm(granted it was the very start of the season). I think its great to see GO off the bench holding down the fort for Rudy and co

by ripcityinSantiago on Nov 12, 2008 11:50 AM PST up reply actions

What was that about?

How does Greg being in the game prevent them from being them? The idea is that Greg fills the all the holes we had last year (according to Brandon) and that Greg pulls the double teams off of LMA.

I really would like this expanded on a bit.

by dvcastle on Nov 12, 2008 11:57 AM PST up reply actions

LMA said after the La game something to the effect of..

“i was trying to play off greg,” im not talking a longer term strategy here, but i do think bringing greg off the bench is a good way to continue to foster the Roy LMA while giving the big guy a chance to find his NBA legs without everyone trying to force it. In the long term (games after this road trip) i hope and expect for greg to be the starter we have all been waiting for. At that point our big three will begin their dynastic dominance, but i at this point of the season im playing cautious.

Just give him time

He’ll be starting soon enough. Tonight he needs to find something that works for him. If he’s struggling to score, he needs to rebound, play defense, etc.. I’d also like to see him run hard up and down the court. In pre-season I never saw much more than a jog out of him. Coach can always take him out if he gets winded.

Tonight . . . is a good night for scoreboard watching.

As of now, in the Western Conference, we are tied with two teams (Rickets and Nougats)
and behind four others (New Orleans, Phoenix, Utah, and the L[xxx]rs).

Denver has the night off, and Utah is at the Winless Wizards.
The other four teams play EACH OTHER; La-La is at Katrina City, and Houston is at Phoenix.

So, if we take care of Bidness today, we will make up half a game on idle Denver,
keep pace with the two winners of those head-to-heads (and probably Utah as well),
and we are GUARANTEED to make up a full game on the two losers of those games.
(And Utah, if they lose. Don’t get greedy.)

Taking Care of BIDNESS!

Question:

With Marion in the starting lineup, they play him at forward with Beasley (a general forward)
at the other forward spot, and Haslem (really, a natural power forward) playing out of position at center,
like Al Jefferson in Minnie, or Pau was in Memphis, and Amare was before Kurt Thomas and now Snaq.

So if Marion sits, who takes his place in the starting lineup?
Do they start Blount at center and move Haslem to forward, where he should be?
Or do they keep Haslem at center and put someone else in as a forward, directly replacing Maid Marion?

Obviously, this affects Oden’s assignment: Is he up against a good non-center, or a mediocre true center?

Oden's assignment

as I see it, is striking the fear of God into the hearts of his opponents with dunk after stanchion-rattling, crowd-silencing dunk. Whither it be against non-centers or true centers matters to me nary a whit. Dunk on, sir!

Either way, Oden has a serious size advantage

The fact of the matter is, Oden’s going to be able to bully anyone on the Heat roster. He’ll be able to post up, back the defender down, make the pivot and hopefully render the rim asunder. The key is to NOT get in foul trouble. He’ll be playing limited minutes this game, I imagine, but he still needs to work on not drawing so many calls.

On the defensive end, Oden would almost certainly prefer that Blount gets more time as he’s not as effective on that end of the floor. Haslem would create a slight matchup problem. Nate would probably be better served using the zone defense in this instance to just let Greg man the middle and crush all those who dare enter his domain.

by LeafHawk on Nov 12, 2008 12:45 PM PST up reply actions

Well, but also remember . . .

. . . one of the great things about us with Oden in the lineup is that we have TWO genuine starting-quality TRUE CENTERS.
With Oden available for a full game, we should always have either him or Przybilla in the game,
and NEVER have to use LMA or Frye as a center, AT ALL.

So, no matter what, we’ll have “a serious size advantage” at all times, sometimes with Oden, sometimes with Przy.
We’ll be throwing a 7-foot, 250-pound+, paint-occupying true center at Haslem AND Blount anyway.

"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." - Ernest Hemingway

by QualityPie on Nov 12, 2008 12:56 PM PST up reply actions

That's a nice luxury to have, isn't it?

People nationally just don’t know how good of a role player Przybilla is. As long as he’s not worried about starting, or getting 30 minutes a game, this is the perfect place for Ghostface! Here’s hoping he doesn’t try to look for greener pastures anytime soon.

by LeafHawk on Nov 12, 2008 12:59 PM PST up reply actions

Oh, gosh yes.

I guess what I’m thinking is, suppose we had Oden but NOT Joel for this game.
Might it be best to have Greg in against Blount, and whenever Haslem is at center
(which may or may not be Miami’s starting lineup tonight), go with LMA,
and save Greg for their one true center?
Otherwise, we might end up playing our non-center minutes against Blount, and get stuck
having LMA or Frye unnecessarily banging down low with a center (albeit a mediocre one).

And because of having Joel AND Greg, we don’t even have to think like that, really.

I have had zero time to waste on BE which now is my favorite “pasttime”. How depressing does that sound? I am reading a vampire novel series, 100 bajillion times better than “twilight” series so if Im not working Im reading aout death and murder and vampires sucking blood.

I think one HUGE drawback to being such a young team for 4 yers now is the refs never treat the team w/ respect . I mean Broy is an ALLSTAR and as much as I despise special treatment, I think he deserves at least FAIR calls , right?

Or zombies can rip his legs off and eat them using broys front tooth as a knife and we will just be sad that he has to have “re constructive” surgery.

Drawin those fouls and kickin out for threes

I am pumped to see big greg in there with the second unit. If sergio/rudy/outlaw/frye/oden play together, we can run our offense, dump it into greg if he gets good position. If he does, either watch the dunk, watch the foul happen, or watch him hit the open perimeter man. If he doesn’t get good position, don’t force it, just run the offense, get best possible shot and be ready for greg to grap the offensive board.

anybody interested in a little sergio-oden connection

a la CP3-Chandler? I am really excited about this game. I don’t expect Oden to stuff the stats at all, but I do expect about 4 dunks, 1 block, 5 boards and would be ecstatic if we held Miami to less than 25 points in the paint. 9-10 points would be a great showing, especially if 2 or 3 buckets come off lobs.

The Jazz, along with the Hornets, have the best chance in the West to take on the Lakers. Both Utah and New Orleans are excellent teams who are a big step below the Lakers.

The Rockets also could challenge, but they haven’t shown that ability yet.

been thinking of this game for the last 2 hours

and this is what i have come up with:

blazers will need to play a slow paced game, this is their strength

blazers will need to pound it inside to LMA and oden where possible, the heat have the smallest frontcourt in the NBA

need to stop wades penetration, the heat are inconsistent 3 point shooters

keep beasley and marion off the offensive boards

2nd unit must pressure the heat bench, they are miles better and should be able to sustain or increase a lead

force wade to defend, so broy may have a few isolations

blazers will play some zone, with batum/outlaw

probably some more stuff but thats what i have come up with so far

by Yawnie on Nov 12, 2008 3:47 PM PST reply actions

yeah

I pretty much agree.

I think it comes down to the D on Wade. If he has less than 1 point per shot, the Blazers have a great shot to win. If he starts getting up toward 2 points per shot, the Blazers are in trouble.

JQ says Roy's looking good

http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/11/roy_after_warmups_two_thumbs_u.html

Roy felt he had full range. I still didn’t see him try his signature moves – especially the ones involving a pump fake – but he was spry enough that at one point he shimmied and jabber stepped while asking me “You want some of this?”

by Timmay! on Nov 12, 2008 4:49 PM PST reply actions

Interesting side note to that article on Greg

As per above JQ article:

"The arena was void of any music, sound or video being played on the scoreboard when Greg Oden came out and started warming up, which in this day of the NBA is odd in and of itself. I don’t know if it was coincidence or planned, but shortly into Oden’s warmupo routine, the video scoreboard came to life, and blaring out of the speakers was Commissioner David Stern’s voice:

“With the first pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Greg Oden!”

What followed was an NBA-TV Roundtable special on Oden, which included his sitdown session with some of the greatest centers of all-time (Walton, Russell, David Robinson, Ewing, etc.)

Was it to psyche Oden out, or at least get in his head? Some on the Blazers traveling staff wondered aloud."
