Thread of Gameday Openness: Blazers vs. Heat
Oden is back! Oden is back! He's on the second unit, but Oden is back!
Wow...a nearly full roster! (We're looking at you, Martell.)
This is the place to speculate about the game beforehand plus ranting (refs) and raving (Rudy) during.
Please no pictures posted in the thread and don't forget to turn off member pictures and/or auto-updating comments if the thread gets slow. We'll add another for the second half as usual. (Can't wait until the tech guys come up with their ultimate speed-up-Gameday-Threads fix.)
Oden = 23 minutes, no injuries.
Book it.

Mine is almost always first on my screen, even though in reality i’m sure some of you guys hit the post button before me. Something about the way SBNation does their comment posting.

Just Start Him
Can we stop babying Oden already? Just start him. He needs to play with the first unit.
he still may start..
Nate said in his interview that he is going to talk to Jay Jensen and see if it would be better for him to start while his foot is still warm from warmups.
Its important to keep the mojo between LMA and Roy
it seemed like from the 11 minutes in LA that we got to see greg play on the first unit, everyone was out of rythm(granted it was the very start of the season). I think its great to see GO off the bench holding down the fort for Rudy and co
by ripcityinSantiago on Nov 12, 2008 11:50 AM PST up reply actions
What was that about?
How does Greg being in the game prevent them from being them? The idea is that Greg fills the all the holes we had last year (according to Brandon) and that Greg pulls the double teams off of LMA.
I really would like this expanded on a bit.
quid Latine dictum sit, altum viditur
LMA said after the La game something to the effect of..
“i was trying to play off greg,” im not talking a longer term strategy here, but i do think bringing greg off the bench is a good way to continue to foster the Roy LMA while giving the big guy a chance to find his NBA legs without everyone trying to force it. In the long term (games after this road trip) i hope and expect for greg to be the starter we have all been waiting for. At that point our big three will begin their dynastic dominance, but i at this point of the season im playing cautious.

Not yet
He doesn’t know the plays like Przy
"I believe in [Joel]. I just love the way he plays." - Nate McMillan
Just give him time
He’ll be starting soon enough. Tonight he needs to find something that works for him. If he’s struggling to score, he needs to rebound, play defense, etc.. I’d also like to see him run hard up and down the court. In pre-season I never saw much more than a jog out of him. Coach can always take him out if he gets winded.

No need to play him tonight. He can take some rest, and the others can carry the weight. Then he’ll be fresh for Friday.
After reading Quick's update this morning I agree
Sounds like he’s still feeling quite a bit of pain. I worry about the back problems being an issue for the whole year.

Man, I am excited! No work today and Blazers at the ripe time of 5:00. Can’t ask for a much better day.
Tonight . . . is a good night for scoreboard watching.
As of now, in the Western Conference, we are tied with two teams (Rickets and Nougats)
and behind four others (New Orleans, Phoenix, Utah, and the L[xxx]rs).
Denver has the night off, and Utah is at the Winless Wizards.
The other four teams play EACH OTHER; La-La is at Katrina City, and Houston is at Phoenix.
So, if we take care of Bidness today, we will make up half a game on idle Denver,
keep pace with the two winners of those head-to-heads (and probably Utah as well),
and we are GUARANTEED to make up a full game on the two losers of those games.
(And Utah, if they lose. Don’t get greedy.)
Taking Care of BIDNESS!

Question:
With Marion in the starting lineup, they play him at forward with Beasley (a general forward)
at the other forward spot, and Haslem (really, a natural power forward) playing out of position at center,
like Al Jefferson in Minnie, or Pau was in Memphis, and Amare was before Kurt Thomas and now Snaq.
So if Marion sits, who takes his place in the starting lineup?
Do they start Blount at center and move Haslem to forward, where he should be?
Or do they keep Haslem at center and put someone else in as a forward, directly replacing Maid Marion?
Obviously, this affects Oden’s assignment: Is he up against a good non-center, or a mediocre true center?
"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." - Ernest Hemingway
Oden's assignment
as I see it, is striking the fear of God into the hearts of his opponents with dunk after stanchion-rattling, crowd-silencing dunk. Whither it be against non-centers or true centers matters to me nary a whit. Dunk on, sir!

motion carried!
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out burns out farms and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
Either way, Oden has a serious size advantage
The fact of the matter is, Oden’s going to be able to bully anyone on the Heat roster. He’ll be able to post up, back the defender down, make the pivot and hopefully render the rim asunder. The key is to NOT get in foul trouble. He’ll be playing limited minutes this game, I imagine, but he still needs to work on not drawing so many calls.
On the defensive end, Oden would almost certainly prefer that Blount gets more time as he’s not as effective on that end of the floor. Haslem would create a slight matchup problem. Nate would probably be better served using the zone defense in this instance to just let Greg man the middle and crush all those who dare enter his domain.
Well, but also remember . . .
. . . one of the great things about us with Oden in the lineup is that we have TWO genuine starting-quality TRUE CENTERS.
With Oden available for a full game, we should always have either him or Przybilla in the game,
and NEVER have to use LMA or Frye as a center, AT ALL.
So, no matter what, we’ll have “a serious size advantage” at all times, sometimes with Oden, sometimes with Przy.
We’ll be throwing a 7-foot, 250-pound+, paint-occupying true center at Haslem AND Blount anyway.
"Always do sober what you said you'd do drunk. That will teach you to keep your mouth shut." - Ernest Hemingway
That's a nice luxury to have, isn't it?
People nationally just don’t know how good of a role player Przybilla is. As long as he’s not worried about starting, or getting 30 minutes a game, this is the perfect place for Ghostface! Here’s hoping he doesn’t try to look for greener pastures anytime soon.
Oh, gosh yes.
I guess what I’m thinking is, suppose we had Oden but NOT Joel for this game.
Might it be best to have Greg in against Blount, and whenever Haslem is at center
(which may or may not be Miami’s starting lineup tonight), go with LMA,
and save Greg for their one true center?
Otherwise, we might end up playing our non-center minutes against Blount, and get stuck
having LMA or Frye unnecessarily banging down low with a center (albeit a mediocre one).
And because of having Joel AND Greg, we don’t even have to think like that, really.

The team was on the road trip, playing on Monday, so it was Tuesday night with Jay Allen and Michael Holton.

Hawks=no bench
As in zero, zilch, nada. With Josh Smith out now, I would expect them to start losing games soon.

surprisingly there bench hasn't been half bad.
Flip Murray has been pretty good for them and so has Maurice Evans. Plus Pachulia has also given them some good minutes and Acie Law has improved since last year. All in all it’s not as bad a bench as people think.

I watched the Hawks yesterday...
…………………… a very, very good passing team in the paint. That’s the recipe for winning NBA basketball. They do look like they’re a few players short though — notably a true Center.

I didn’t think it has been that easy on ’em. Portland, Denver, Houston, Dalls. Pretty tough teams I think.

yeah
they’ve been at home, but they’ve been absolutely dominant. They are the best team in the league… only Boston comes close (but not even the C’s are all that close).

Seems like our defense should just focus on Wade...
Let everyone else beat us and double Wade when he gets the ball. Play lots of zone defense since it sounds like Quinn is the only zone buster they got. Lets make Beasley win the game for them… see if he can handle the pressure!
Go Blazers!

I have been sooo busy at work lately
I have had zero time to waste on BE which now is my favorite “pasttime”. How depressing does that sound? I am reading a vampire novel series, 100 bajillion times better than “twilight” series so if Im not working Im reading aout death and murder and vampires sucking blood.
I think one HUGE drawback to being such a young team for 4 yers now is the refs never treat the team w/ respect . I mean Broy is an ALLSTAR and as much as I despise special treatment, I think he deserves at least FAIR calls , right?
Or zombies can rip his legs off and eat them using broys front tooth as a knife and we will just be sad that he has to have “re constructive” surgery.

It has been frustrating...
But I was surprised to see some good calls our way against Orlando. They even called 3 in the key! And Roy did get a couple of those head-fake-bump-shoot calls you see stars drawing. Maybe we’ll get a bit more respect against eastern conf. teams.

who's it gonna be?
I say Sergio, Travis and Frye are the most likely to go.
In order of most to least likely to be traded:
1) Sergio
2) Travis
3) Frye
4) Shavlik
5) Ike
6) Webster
7) Blake
8) Rex
9) Batum
10) Przy
11) RLEC
12) Rudy
13) LaMarcus
14) Oden
15) Roy
how’d I do?

I think RLEC is a really valuable chip
but I think its more valuable if we let it expire and save the capspace to bring in a FA.

The basics from ATH
Buy or Sell: Greg Oden.
Woody- Lowered expectations, hopes he does well the rest of the season.
Jay- Stay healthy, be aggressive, “be a monster out there” tonight
Tim- Lowered expectations. No limping by end of game
Jackie- It’s ok if he’s tentative, “give this kid some time and get off his back”
Nobody actually did the buy or sell gimmick in their responses.
yes...
they are shootin round

Defending Wade
I am interested/terrified to see how this goes tonight. I think this is where we miss Martell a little bit. Hopefully some combo of Batum, Rudy, Trout and Blake (cringe) will at least keep him off the damn free throw line. Easier said than done though

The Dallas-Miami Finals embittered a generation of fans
Even fans who didn’t care about either team.
I've never seen a player fall down as much as Roy
and get so few calls. Every other player who so much as groans going for a layin gets a call. Roy’s an All Star! Where’s the all star treatment?
WWKPD?
Miami is a team that you make beat you from the outside
long 2s and 3s
I think Aldridge’s length will bother Beasley. And a zone will keep them out of the paint, hopefully. We can sacrifice a bit of rebounding with the zone because Miami has nothing in their front court, plus Oden is back.
Make them jumpshooters and don’t foul.
WWKPD?
Agreed
Would love to see Beasly take alot of shots not in the paint.

Drawin those fouls and kickin out for threes
I am pumped to see big greg in there with the second unit. If sergio/rudy/outlaw/frye/oden play together, we can run our offense, dump it into greg if he gets good position. If he does, either watch the dunk, watch the foul happen, or watch him hit the open perimeter man. If he doesn’t get good position, don’t force it, just run the offense, get best possible shot and be ready for greg to grap the offensive board.

anybody interested in a little sergio-oden connection
a la CP3-Chandler? I am really excited about this game. I don’t expect Oden to stuff the stats at all, but I do expect about 4 dunks, 1 block, 5 boards and would be ecstatic if we held Miami to less than 25 points in the paint. 9-10 points would be a great showing, especially if 2 or 3 buckets come off lobs.
I'm thinking 10 points
(4 for 4 on dunks, 0 for 2 on jump hooks, 2 for 4 on FTs), with 6 boards and 2 blocks.
Boomshakalaka
FT's
I agree with ya, but hoping to see a 5/6ish performance from the line. I love that greg can shoot the FT’s, with either hand to boot!

The Jazz, along with the Hornets, have the best chance in the West to take on the Lakers. Both Utah and New Orleans are excellent teams who are a big step below the Lakers.

Obviously gotta go Cuban tonight: after the victory we’ll be noshing on medianoches, platanos maduros, y ensalada de aguacate. (Cuban-style grilled cheese sandwiches, fried plantains, and avocado salad)
There’s not enough time to make flan, so it’s coconut sorbet for dessert.
Wish I was in Miami watching this one. Not only for the obvious Oden-related reasons, but also because it’s REALLY rainy/dreary outside. Bleah.

heres to roy saying something about confidence
A staple and classy remark in seemingly every interview
"His game right now is so smooth, so confident and so pure that it translates into a palpable nastiness. It's almost as if his game now carries this aura of an Assassin. Roy is oozing confidence and I think more and more people are finding out there's a grit and toughness to him."
-Quick on Roy
We should win tonight
I bet 2 dollars on the Blazers not covering the spread tonight. Vegas has it at +1.5 for the Blazers and -1.5 for the Heat.
Gambling is a sin…punish me by making the Blazers win!
I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Based on current standings
Miami lost to teams with a combined record of 10-10. Portland lost to teams with a combined record of 18-3.
Miami won against teams with a combined record of 9-18 If you throw out the horrible Minnesota team, our wins came against teams with a combined record of 10-10.
I think we can take this one.

Talking about making the playoffs first before thinking that the Blazers are championship material.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
been thinking of this game for the last 2 hours
and this is what i have come up with:
blazers will need to play a slow paced game, this is their strength
blazers will need to pound it inside to LMA and oden where possible, the heat have the smallest frontcourt in the NBA
need to stop wades penetration, the heat are inconsistent 3 point shooters
keep beasley and marion off the offensive boards
2nd unit must pressure the heat bench, they are miles better and should be able to sustain or increase a lead
force wade to defend, so broy may have a few isolations
blazers will play some zone, with batum/outlaw
probably some more stuff but thats what i have come up with so far
outscore em in the first 48 min
that’s what is important. ;)
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out burns out farms and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.
Half-court game Blazers win.
Limit turnovers. The Heat have the best TO differential in the league. This is where they score.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
this is why
i cant see sergio playing more than about 10 mins, the heat guards are ballhawking, blake will play extended minutes since he generally doesnt turn the ball over much
You cant see Sergio playing more than 10 minutes ANY game
b/c that’s pretty much his minute ceiling ( and it is not made of glass)

that is true
at the moment, but (fingers crossed) if blake got injured, sergio would be starting PG, with bayless backing him up, wonder how we would do, or would broy take over primary ballhandling
I think Broy, at first , would take over the primary ball handling duties
untill a replacement is found or sergio learns to calm down a bit cuz i cant really see broy and sergio playing well together.. slow, fast, slow fast, turnover fouls no defense timeout.

JQ says Roy's looking good
http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2008/11/roy_after_warmups_two_thumbs_u.html
Roy felt he had full range. I still didn’t see him try his signature moves – especially the ones involving a pump fake – but he was spry enough that at one point he shimmied and jabber stepped while asking me “You want some of this?”
Interesting side note to that article on Greg
As per above JQ article:
"The arena was void of any music, sound or video being played on the scoreboard when Greg Oden came out and started warming up, which in this day of the NBA is odd in and of itself. I don’t know if it was coincidence or planned, but shortly into Oden’s warmupo routine, the video scoreboard came to life, and blaring out of the speakers was Commissioner David Stern’s voice:
“With the first pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, Greg Oden!”
What followed was an NBA-TV Roundtable special on Oden, which included his sitdown session with some of the greatest centers of all-time (Walton, Russell, David Robinson, Ewing, etc.)
Was it to psyche Oden out, or at least get in his head? Some on the Blazers traveling staff wondered aloud."
Yes! Yes! In the face!
wow
maybe they should have saved that for when he comes into the game… you can’t use your best stuff during the warm-up

I’d almost rather Marion was there so Wade took less shots.

Portland's rebounding is breaking down.
Not sure what happened to the early-game ball movement and rebounding. It’s like Miami made adjustments and Portland hasn’t
the way these refs are calling it you have to be 10 in the key to get that call

I'm kinda wanting to see Rudy
and his mid range game a little more. I know he can get to the rim…but I haven’t seen much of it since he came to portland.

I hope Nate gets them motivated in the 2nd
Looked like the team just decided it was going to a breeze and stop playing hard. Started making risky decisions.
BINGO, BANGO, BONGO
looked like Serg and Rudy
really wanted to get Greg another bucket and tried to hard.
Then the starters came back in and looked out of sync.

Triples Ruuuuuuuuuudddyyy!!!

Nate's halftime message should be:
starters- pound the ball inside to Aldridge.
reserves- Rudy- shoot the ball…. .Greg- rebound the ball.
Boomshakalaka
aye
no more Greg posting up for a while.

Anyone else agree
that we need more Batum in the 2nd half? I thought he was doing a great job guarding Wade.
i agree he is too long for wade

I wouldn't bet 5 cents on any other result... I just hope PDX doesn't finish in the 8 slot so they have a chance of winning a couple postseason games...

Damn...
Lakers are up by 21 at the half on the Hornets on the road…I hate them
Good job not playing Oden too much
Nate should have taken this approach from the beginning.
Blazers up by 5 or something like that at halftime. On track for about 105 points.
Blazers could be up by much more.
We cannot put up with this flagrant lack of accountability anymore.
Here's the Halftime box... (Blazers shooting 48.8%, Heat 48.5%)

Bad defense and bad shot selection. Yeah he’s gotten a few rebounds, but ugh so far.

Also laggy. I've never seen this much lag before.

Hmmm. We’ll have to play the Lakers to break that one.

I wish Roy could just fall to the court,
hold his face for a defensive posetion, and then get the Blazers easy free throws for the next six minutes. I like Wade, but man! What a baby!
My favorite teams are the Blazers and any team that is playing the Lakers.
i'm tired of the manu comparisons...

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.
