All of Spain frustrated!

http://blogs.plus.es/daimiel/2008/11/hasta-aqu-hemos.html

I would try to translate it completely for everyone, but there are much better Spanish resources on this page than myself.

Quick and rough bullet point translation:

McMillan does not understand or know how to coach.

Giving the ball to one person, Roy, all of the time is highly unusual and will fail.

Sergio's role will diminish when Martel returns.

Rudy needs the ball more.

My only comments:  Every team has or should have a go-to guy.  Roy is the Blazer's.  The team has only played seven games and I think everyone, for or against Sergio, should just relax.  I think it says a lot about Nate's trust in Sergio when you have the summer league's MVP sitting on the bench every single game.  Blake gets more time because he is a stable veteran.  I honestly believe that if Sergio just accepts his role for now, he will earn more minutes.  He has not shown that he can be stable, which is probably the most important thing the Blazers need right now...to start this run at dominance.

I'm getting tired of this

Sergio is playing.

How many minutes does he want?

And over Roy? Yeah right…….

The answer: 42.5 minutes.

……………………………. and then there would still be Spanish nationalists taking insult at the 7.5 minutes he was sitting.

I wouldn't get too worked up about this

I met very few individuals like the author during a fair amount of time spent in Spain. The majority of Spanish NBA fans that I met had a more nuanced perspective on both Sergio’s situation and the future of the Blazers than this guy does. I personally wouldn’t say that he’s representative, but we have posters eminently more qualified than I to make that assessment.

Frankly, if you can still take Mr. Spanish Blogger seriously after reading the line, “Rudy ya no recibe tantas oportunidades y se las tiene que buscar. Las miradas que recibe en el vestuario no son las de hace un mes” I can’t help but laugh at you. Roughly translated, “Rudy is already not getting as many opportunities and he has to seek them out. The looks he’s getting in the locker room aren’t those of a month ago.” The first sentence has no grounding in any reality of which I am a part. The second sentence is simply cringeworthy.

Or maybe he’s saying that our boys are only now beginning to appreciate Rudy’s sex appeal! ;)

All of Spain?

Surely, there are some savvy Spaniards that know that the Blazers offense has been highly efficient and that the biggest problem for the team, thus far, has been defense. Blazers are second in offensive efficiency and second to last in defensive efficiency:

BUT STILL!!! the whole uproar in spain didnt start with a sergio interview, it started with a “agents” point of view…that happened to be interpreted from his clients behind closed door complaints (the parts about nate, I’m sure sergio never wanted that made public)

Then the Oregon media had a bit of fun with their q&a session with sergio becuase of what the “stupid forign agent” said.

sergio didn’t start this, his stupid forign agent did…..and what the heck we may as well blame stupid rudy for it too…..if he wasn’t playing as well as he is, few in spain would even want to bring either of them up at the dinner tables.

s/or I could just say I won’t ever believe it, would that arguement work here?/s ;)

That would be a tremendous story.

Here’s the problem about the whining: he didn’t stop the hoopla. Sometimes, that’s your job as a player. This isn’t meant to incriminate Sergio. It just is. Just talking. Love you Sergio, keep playing hard like you did last game.

Although Outlaw showed more than he did last year in these past few games. He’s an animal. Basically, he’s starting to do all the things people we complaining he didn’t. All teh darn Blazers are doing it to. Look at Sergio; one day I complain that he can’t finish at the rim, then Orlando happens. Hey, he can’t make a 3 pter, though. Please prove me wrong again. Also, let’s trade Frye cause he didn’t punch Howard. He totally should punch someone tonight (preferrably on the other team.

Put yourself in their shoes

Pretend a native son of Portland (Let’s pretend it’s Roy) left the minor leagues of Portland, to go to the big leagues of Europe.

Even though he’s clearly one of the best players around, when he gets there, he gets some touches, and shows he can play, but they really focus on their existing players.

We’d get frustrated too. Because we identify with him as our native son. And we’d vent.

It’s ok they’re venting. It just means they care.

by Timmay! on Nov 12, 2008 10:19 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Some of us might. Some of us might consider the existing players better

and the needs of a team. Some of us might even put a little credence in what the coach, a guy with 21 NBA years under his belt and is often called one of the best coaches in the league, thinks. Some of us might do that. Some of them do that.

I’m glad they care, but it’d be nice if they really thought about it (if all of us did) before venting. O-live’s a better place for that sort of thing.

Nate is a great coach

It’s the beginning of the season and we have A LOT of new players, so it’s expected that things are not going smoothly.
Rudy’s role is gonna keep increasing and he’ll be a factor in our first playoff run in years.
Fans usually think their players are way better than they actually are.
Sergio is not that good, and neither is Blake, but Blake fits better with Roy than Sergio and Roy is our best player.
Sergio will probably leave during the season.
I’d love to see him play for D’Antoni, I still can’t believe phoenix sold that pick to us.

The key word is "stable."

Take the Orlando game for instance. Sergio has a good first half and makes a couple layups and some nice passes. The second half he overdribbles on several possessions, jacks up 2 ridiculous shots and makes a horrible turnover. He has the skills, but can he harness them into a stable, consistent style of play? Until he does Nate will not give him more than 10 minutes a game, and rightly so.

by erastus25 on Nov 12, 2008 10:58 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I don't like the title of the post, don't count on me about all that.

I’m spanish but I understand more or less Sergio’s situation… He came to Portland way early than he should.

by Kartemax on Nov 12, 2008 11:12 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

He may have made mistakes, but he certainly could have overcome them

He may still. He actually came at a great time and probably would have got more playing time if our team hadn’t gotten better so much quicker than he did.

I just can’t understand the Sergio and Rudy clammering. Rudy’s playing well, and is getting lots of shots and minutes. He’s not MVP material right now anyway, and he’s not the best player on the team. He’s doing better than anyone expected though, and I can’t figure out why that’s not enough. Sergio just has to learn to knock down the 3, to remember to try on D and finish at rim once in a while. Neither Spain nor Nate can’t do that for him.

Sergio’s situation is that he’s not good enough yet. He’s not oppressed. Maybe we can even blame the Spanish media and fans a little bit for pumping up his ego.

Some people think

that Sergio is much better than we see because he plays tied, limiting his creativity and not taking any risk at all, trying to be just a regular PG when he’s something different, a really special player, but playing to his flaws (who has reportedly trying to overcome e.g.spending all the summer with a shooting coach) instead of playing to his advantages so he can please Nate

There was a good example of why Nate has limited confidence in Sergio

In the Orlando game,we are up by 10,Sergio has played well and is part of the reason we have a lead,Serigo hits the bottom of the rim twice and then turns it over and Orlando is back in the game. I would like to see Sergio in NY or GS next year and hope he does well but the Spanish fans perception that he would be a star in the NBA if it wasent for Nate is wrong,he just aint that good.I dont mean this in a nasty way but Nate’s job is to win as many games as possible and he is not going to change the way we play to accomidate or showcase Sergio

Shooting is never something that can be neglected

One of the major reasons Steve Nash can do what he does is that he is an amazing shooter from downtown. Even Jason Kidd, for all of his horrible shooting, is generally in the mid-30’s from downtown. Flat out, if Sergio continued to shoot the way he did last year, there was no way he was ever going to make it in the NBA. I’m not saying he has to shoot 40% from three, but if he inches it up a little more from where he is now (which is a large result of working with the coach), then he’ll be fine.

Simply put, no matter how well a guy sees the court and passes the ball, if opponents don’t even have to pretend to guard him, there won’t be those passing lanes for him to exploit since his man will have sagged into them.

I like Sergio and think he gets the hook a little too quickly and unfairly from Nate at times, but part of that is due to having a young team. If Sergio were playing around more guys who knew their way around the court last year, I think his numbers would have been far better. As it was, you had TO, Jack, and Frye all adapting to unfamiliar positions, and him splitting the PG duties with Jack, which was pretty much the worst case scenario for him.

That being said, if he can’t prove he belongs this year playing alongside Rudy and Batum, then he’ll have some serious work to do on his game. I think he’ll continue to improve by leaps this year, but we’ll see.

I like your comments.

You are turning into a must-read already.

Whether it’s all of Spain or only one blogger in Spain (and Lord knows that no AMERICAN blogger would ever spout off with a half-baked opinion on sports…you can hold our whole nation accountable for every single sports blogger in the U.S.) I would urge everybody to wait until February or so. This team is going to look so much smoother then.

Personally I am wondering about the Rudy-Oden mix on the second unit until Greg returns as a starter. On the one hand I can see a lot of zip passes for alley-oops. On the other hand I can see big old Oden clogging up the middle and drawing defenders, essentially shutting down drives. But then again on the third hand I can see the ball going in to Oden, him commanding a double team, and then a pass or two over to Rudy for THREEEEEE!

We’ll see.

2 things.

1. How many hands do you have, Dave?

2. Nice compliment for our new Spanish friend. If Dave called me a must-read, I don’t think I’d be able to sleep for the next three nights.

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

He's not just some blogger

He’s Antoni Daimiel, he used to comment all NBA games for like 10 years in Spain until last season. His blog is one of the (if not The) most important blogs about NBA in Spain. He’s the main source of NBA information spanish fans have so go figure… he’s in fact quite representative of spanish fans’ feelings.

But also he doesn’t look like bashing non-spanish blazer players, I think it seemed harsher after translation

Good to know

some of the points are valid to ponder, others are obvious fandom of a player. Glad to hear it wasn’t meant/intended to be harsh.

I think you meant:

“…I am wondering about the RudySergio-Oden mix on the second unit…”

Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16

Way early to Portland

The “bad” timing for Sergio is when Roy, then Oden was drafted and the team’s identity went away from his strengths

Pritchard may have envisioned a style that Sergio could mesh with when he originally scouted/drafted Rodriguez, but the team’s style evolved in a different direction. (So there are now only 10 minutes/game where Sergio may be needed to “push the tempo”)

Overseas revenue

I remember KP saying that he envisioned branching the Blazer brand out to Spain much like the Rockets have done with China. If that’s the case would the Blazers ever play a home game in Spain? Do they currently sell Blazer merchandise there? Would it be wise to give Rudy and Sergio a “free pass” just to please Spanish fans to build the fan base there?

Wouldn't Mind

I wouldn’t mind Rudy getting more minutes. The guy is a baller. He is the most efficient rookie in the league and the most efficient player on this team.

Rudy

I dont understand what all of the fuss is about? Rudy is getting minutes and touches and he’s playing well. The ball goes through Roy because he is the best player on the team, the one bona fide star. Defenses set there gameplan to stop him, which opens up everything for the rest of the team. Besides, the offense is 2nd in efficiency in the NBA. Not to shabby, we just need to pick up the defense. Rudy brings energy and 3 pt shooting, he is the perfect 6th man. I say enjoy him spain, and stop getting frustrated.

I'd be willing to trade Sergio

And play Rudy 30+ minutes for his career if it gets the whining down to a minimum.

Sergio is not, has not been, and will likely never be worth all this fuss.

Rudy IS worth the fuss, but there shouldn’t be a fuss since he’s play as much as any rookie this side of Derrick Rose (and playing well to boot).

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again— we invaded the wrong country and history will prove me right. The Spanish Sports Media’s Weapons of Massive Homerness is something that endangers us all.

OR, we can not care what some factually inaccurate sports writers says from some far off distant (and possible made up) land, just like we don’t care what Sam Smith or Chris Sheridan says here.

In the meantime, direct all fussing at Rudy and less towards Sergio. I wanna like the kid, not be annoyed with his continued overratedosity.

Don’t make me hate Rudy by whining about him all the time. He’s a good player and I wanna like him.

Just to clarify

I wasn’t calling Rudy overrated, I think he is rated— just as good and better than we coulda’ hoped for.

It’s when the whining and Sergio-firsties starts making Sergio a bigger part of the game than his play deserves… that’s all that bugs me, if anything. ESPECIALLY when it starts being Anti-Roy, as if Sergio is anywhere close to as effective as Roy with the ball.

I got no problem with the Rudy love (even though being against Roy just shoots Rudy fans in their own foot), and I am totally fine with people loving Sergio with all their might but when you start tearing down better players just because you have a cult love for Sergio… ugh.

Criticizing playing Jack over Sergio is one thing… criticizing Roy or that Martell will take minutes away from Sergio? Whoa boy.

Priorities.

Wholeheartedly agree

Let’s not care about what the Spanish Sports Media say. We know beforehand what their massive homerness will make them say.

They should be

Meaningful minutes for Sergio and 25 points for Rudy. They shouldn’t have anything to complain about for a few days.
