MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: BLAZERS TO HONOR TERRY PORTER

Tp-3update_medium

AND BOBBY GROSS.

IT'S OFFICIAL. VIA PTB PRESS RELEASE:

TRAIL BLAZERS TO RETIRE #30 ... TWICE!
Dual ceremonies will recognize contributions of Porter, Gross

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Trail Blazers will raise jersey number 30 to the rafters not once, but twice, during December ceremonies to honor the Trail Blazers contributions of Terry Porter and Bobby Gross, the team announced today.

Portland's #30 will become just the third NBA jersey to be retired on behalf of multiple players. New York's #15 honors both Dick McGuire and Earl Monroe. Boston's #18 hangs in honor of Dave Cowens, and was previously worn by Jim Loscutoff, who had asked that the number remain in use.

"We are proud to honor our rich tradition by celebrating two men who put #30 front and center for many of this franchise's finest moments," Trail Blazers President Larry Miller said. "Terry and Bobby embodied what it means to be a Trail Blazer, on and off the court. We are thrilled to celebrate their contributions to the franchise."

Porter "gave everything he had"

On December 16, at Portland's 7 p.m. contest vs. the Sacramento Kings, the Trail Blazers will honor Porter, a 6-3 point guard who played in Portland from 1985-95 and averaged 14.9 points and 7.0 assists per game during his 10-year tenure with the Trail Blazers.

A two-time All-Star, Porter remains the all-time assist leader (5,319) and second-leading scorer (11,330) in Trail Blazers history. He is among the franchise's all-time leaders in nearly every significant statistical category, including games played (758; 3rd) and minutes played (23,978; 2nd).

Currently the head coach of the Phoenix Suns, Porter, 45, joined the Trail Blazers in 1985 as a first-round draft choice (24th overall) out of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The second-leading scorer on Portland's 1990 and 1992 Western Conference Champion teams, Porter also had stints in Minnesota, Miami and San Antonio during a stellar 17-year NBA career.

"The Trail Blazers organization gave me my chance and believed in me when 23 other teams did not, so they will always be special to me," Porter said. "But this caps it off. I am honored and moved that they feel my jersey should be retired.

"My whole basketball career has been about working hard every day and giving myself the opportunity to be the best player I could be. I would hope that Blazers fans would remember me as a player who gave everything he had when he stepped on the floor, competed, and represented the city and state to the best of my ability."

Gross "just tried to fit in"

On December 18, during the Trail Blazers' 7 p.m. contest vs. Porter and the Suns, the team will honor Gross, a 6-6 forward/guard who was a starter on Portland's 1976-77 NBA Championship team.

Gross, still a resident of the Portland area, averaged 9.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in seven seasons with the Trail Blazers from 1975-82.

The Long Beach State product, a second-round pick (25th overall) in 1975, is best remembered for his superb play during the 1977 NBA Playoffs. Gross averaged 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting a scintillating 59.1 percent in 13 playoff games.

He saved his best for the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA Finals. In the six-game series, Gross averaged 17.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists, hitting 46-of-69 field goals (66.7 percent), and punctuating his efforts with a team-high 24 points and 8 rebounds in the decisive 109-107 win that gave Portland its only NBA title.

"Even now, when people talk to me, they want to talk about one series, the Philadelphia series," Gross said. "That's what they remember.

"I'm very honored, and I'll be in good company with Terry. I didn't expect this ever to happen. I was somebody who deferred a lot, and just tried to fit in. Making sure everything ran smoothly was what was important to me."

Ticket availability

Tickets are available for both games at the Rose Quarter box office, at TicketsWest outlets, by calling 503-797-9600 or visiting Trailblazers.com. Suite rentals and group ticket opportunities for parties of 10 or more are also available at 503-797-9600.

Additional tickets may become available if released from group hold. Subscribers to Ticket Alert would be notified on Nov. 24 of immediate pre-sale opportunities. Remaining tickets would be available to the general public on Nov. 26.

Notes:

The number 30 will be the 11th jersey to hang from the Rose Garden rafters, and the first to be retired since Lionel Hollins raised #14 on April 18, 2007.

The only other team to take the #30 out of circulation is Indiana, which retired the number on November 2, 1985, in honor of George McGinnis. McGinnis started opposite Gross in the 1977 Finals as a member of Philadelphia.

Gross is the seventh member of the 1977 NBA champions to have his number retired by the Trail Blazers.

YESSIR! LET THE CELEBRATIONS BEGIN!

WHAT?

They’re not retiring Porter’s jersey when Porter will be in town with the Suns?

I think it's a bit strange too... however,

I wonder if there is a “breach” if it was done prior to a game against the Suns?? Mainly b/c you would be showing praise in an roundabout way to the other team…

Retiring his Jersey before a Suns game

Would give Portland a tactical advantage by removing a team’s coach before a game starts.

Yeah, I don’t think it’s a big deal either, but I bet it’s a fairness thing.

BEN!!! WE NEED A SPEEECH!

I've got a plan......we lob up a bad shot that Dwight can block, but we do it in such a way that it hits either Rashard or Hedo in the head knocking them out for the game.

Your not done yet, it is easy to get a # retired, if it belongs to a class act and player like Porter……now your next task is to get JR Ryder’s # retired…when you get that done, then you can talk about retirement……But feel free to write a few songs, in your spare time….just let someone else sing them…..

Did anyone notice that we are retiring Porter and Gross….but not Sheed who also wore #30. It seems to be a pretty pointed indictment of the JailBlazers

Rasheed is still active

I don’t expect his jersey to be retired afterward either (no conference finals victories, acrimonious fan relationship, etc), but still, they wouldn’t retire it while he’s active.

I had a feeling that was what you meant :)

But figured it was worth a quick correction.

I’d be shocked if Rasheed ended up with his jersey retired.

Unless he comes back here in a couple years to finish his career and is the catalyst to lead us to the promised land.

I’d reconsider then.

I agree

that it is really weird they will honor Porter and Gross. It seems like since they’ve honored both of these guys, they’ve got to honor Wallace now. It seems like a double standard.

And 7 members of the ’77 team? That seems to be a little bit ridiculous to me.

Like deadspin said (I think, and this is just approximate) “They have a LOT of retired jersey numbers for a team with one title.”

Congrats Ben. You are the main man behind this.

The Blazers might have retired #30 one day, but definitely not now. “Honor Terry Porter” was your brainchild. I’m sure you are not against also honoring Bobby Gross in the process (who I have to admit I have no memory of and would never have thought about checking if other players wore that number).

A quick look into the list of retired jerseys reveals that apparently only the Indiana Pacers have a #30 already retired (George McGinnis). Funny that the Blazers have two (or three) remarkable players in their history who went on the court with that number.

The two fine men should make you an honorary guest for these events to celebrate their day with them.

How Weird

They aren’t retiring his jersey when we play the Suns? Why don’t we do it during a road game then. That almost makes as much sense. Live….via satellite from Phoenix AZ…the wearer of the Portland Trailblazers’ newest retired jersey….Terryyyyy Porter… (spoken in corny announcer voice).

Phoenix is at New York on December 15th.

And their next game after that will be that game on the 18th for Gross’ retirement.

So Porter (and the Suns) WILL be in town on the 16th, the night after the Knicks game,
preparing for their Portland game two nights later.

Which does make it perfect timing for Porter’s night, doesn’t it?
He WILL be here anyway, preparing for a Suns-Blazers game two nights later.

This is great for Porter and Gross, BUT

I’m just wondering what criteria they’re using to retire these numbers. It seems pretty loose to me. The whole championship team has their numbers retired and now 2 members of the finals team. It seems to be more about team success rather than individual accomplishment, if that’s the criteria, then Buck, Duck, and Kersey should have their numbers retired as well.

I still don't think we should retire it.

That said, he’s far more deserving than other people who we’ve retired.

Wasn’t there a post or a story on how the Celtics don’t put up division championship banners? It’s because it doesn’t matter. They win. They’ve been there, and that’s all that matters is that championship banner.

I feel the same way. You relish the little stuff when that’s all you have.

I love me some porter, but… he’s no Jordan or Bird or Magic or Drexler or Walton.

Still, it makes Ben happy and it should make my tickets go up in value, so i’m all for it.

NOOO on Porter

Simple: How many championships did this guy bring to this city… Zilch!! Were his numbers worthy… HELL No (12.2 points, 5.6 assists) Porter was at best the 2nd best player on this team and was light-years away from Drexler.

AND this one quote from my cousin Victor on why we shouldn’t:

We shouldn’t retire Porter’s number simply because Oden, Roy, Aldridge and Rudy will be better!

Buck Williams

I have no beef with retiring # 30 in honor of TP, but can somebody make an argument AGAINST retiring Buck Williams’ # 52 long before Greg Oden started wearing it? The guy was one of the all-time Blazer greats and as much or more than Clyde and Terry, was the reason the Blazers went to the Finals in 1990 and 1992. Someday I hope this oversight is corrected by the organization.
