Gameday Open Thread: Blazers vs. Magic

Here we go again, this time early!   These East Coast games always play havoc with the blog schedule.

Enjoy talking about the game in this thread.  Please keep comments as centered on the contest as possible.  Also remember no pictures in the Gameday Thread comments please, save for Timbo's boxscores.  If the thread gets big and your loading time gets long consider disabling avatars and/or auto-updating comments, which can be accessed in the "Edit Settings" menu in your left sidebar.

someone was whining about the “first,” comments in that epic whiny post the other day, but gameday threads are the only place you see it, so it seems pretty legit to me.

I think when people get first

That they should have to write a 250 word essay on the importance of being first. This is a blog after all. What is a blog without writing and essays? (Not counting photo blogs)

by tominhawaii on Nov 10, 2008 12:56 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Shouldn't the essay be about the importance of refreshing your browser

Can an essay even be just 250 words long?

Dwight Howard and Co.

This will be a tough one. Hopefully Joel can at least keep Dwight to a double-double and not a double-double-double(20 and 20). I guess that doesn’t make sense.

And what would a 7' slam dunk champ

get from dunking on a 185lb 6’6" guy. May make the Sports Center highlight just because Rudy’s dunk in the Olympics. But it wouldn’t impress many people. Now if Rudy dunks on him again, THAT will make the highlights. Go Rudy!!

when you get League Pass, they also give you NBATV. In fact, I’m almost positive this is true.

All I know is, I didn’t have NBATV, and when I was searching for the game this morning to record it, I found it on NBATV and it worked.

This doesn't go here, but I don't care. Hollinger grumps about Portland

http://proxy.espn.go.com/chat/chatESPN?event_id=23511 (Insider)

John Hollinger: Greetings from Portland, where I’ve had better luck with the basketball (two last-second finishes in 48 hours) than the weather (garden variety Northwest dreary).

Because everyone knows the NorthEAST is constantly sunny and beautiful, never dreary…

Riboflavin (Portland, Or): So after watching two exciting wins by the Blazers, what are your impressions of the team? Rudy sure is fun to watch, eh?

John Hollinger: Rudy is better than I thought he’d be (I was high on him long term but thought he’d need longer to hit his stride). Blazers in general, however, have most of the same issues as a year ago, and I think they’re headed for about the same record.

The Blazers have played the toughest starting schedule in NBA history and they are 3-3. Now granted they haven’t played to their potential, and granted Oden looks to be human, but ….they’ve played the toughest starting schedule in NBA history and they are 3-3. Hollinger likes to grump, and I think he has a special dark place in his heart for Portland. Not sure why exactly.

That's not particularly grumpy for him

He thinks we had luck with injuries last season apart from Oden, and compared to league averages he is right. We lost James Jones, who he thinks was important. And his stats show that our point differential was actually worse than the number of wins we got. So he has us reaching the 8th spot, but not improve just as much yet as some people around here think (hope). Right now the Wolves are ranked as one of the worst teams in the league, and we barely beat them. Not enough to change his mind yet.

I would say that assuming a team won't make the playoffs based on 6 games...

is overly gloomy. Especially when he himself states that he doesn’t even have enough evidence to put together a first installment of his power rankings.

Watching the defense

I’m going to pay special attention to the Blazers D this game. I’m curious to see how the Blazers play Howard. Przybilla will likely go solo, but I’m sick of the guards playing no man’s land between the post and 3-point line. I wish they would either commit to a double team instead of making half-effort swipes at the ball. Howard is turnover prone under aggressive double teams. I’d like to see some double teams just to throw him off balance. Of course, I’m not sure if the Blazers know how to double the post since they hardly ever do it.

I’ll also be watching how the Blazers play pick and roll defense. Most of the time the Blazers switch, but not all the time. I’m not sure what strategy the Blazers use on pick and rolls.

Lastly, I’ll be paying attention to the shots the Magic take. Whether the Blazers can stop dribble penetration and force the offense to make plays. I can handle Howard getting his points, I don’t think he’s good enough offensively to beat a team.

Here’s to our first ROAD WIN.

if Orlando decides they want to make open 3 pointers. Pick your poison: Double team Howard in the paint and leave shooters open OR let Dwight work in the post 1 on 1.

I don't really fear Dwight Howard

I can’t explain it really, but I don’t. He’s sort of an AI type to me, looks good, gets the numbers, but at the end of the day the wins aren’t piling up like they should be. It’s going to be some scrub that trips up the Blazers if they do indeed lose. Like a Jameer Nelson suddenly hitting eight 3’s or something ridiculous like that.

22pts 14 rebs 4 blocks on 60% FG shooting and since FT shooting is a weakness the Blazers share with Howard, I think we can be lax on that. He’s no good because he doesn’t have the moves of Hakeem or Duncan?

The ONLY problem I have with Hack-a-Howard...

…is that it can be used too liberally. Granted, if Howard is going to have a look at an easy hook, lay-in, dunk, anything within 4 feet, then by all means, hack him good and hard (though not flagrant-worthy-hard.) But they have to be careful, especially with the big guys doing this. Ghostface P only has six fouls to dish out, and if enough big guys get in foul trouble, then it’ll be guys like Outlaw and Diogu trying to keep him at bay. At some point the players get so small that Howard will just blow through the fouls, get the two points, and his 50% chance at a 3rd as well.

The only thing Portland can REALLY do to stop him is to get him in foul trouble. They need to drive the ball right at him, right away, and keep doing it until he has to take a seat on the bench.

he probably said what we all know

mostly perimeter shooters and poor defence against penetrating point guards

by Yawnie on Nov 10, 2008 2:34 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I have insider and he said this
One reason Portland struggled to keep him under wraps, however, was because the Wolves surrounded him with three shooters down the stretch, playing Jefferson with Mike Miller, Randy Foye and Kevin Love, while Sebastian Telfair ran the point. And in the final 90 seconds Rashad McCants replaced Telfair and they had four shooters around Jefferson…
According to 82games.com, Minnesota is plus-10 for the season in the three minutes when that unit has operated together.

That’s good stuff about Al Jefferson.

by tominhawaii on Nov 10, 2008 2:39 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'll give you this but if you want more, you got to say something nice about unicorns
Before the Blazers-Wolves game, Nate McMillan made some very interesting comments regarding his team’s inability to get to the free-throw line.

saying they don’t do enough to exaggerate fouls in order to get the whistle.

What drew his ire was an illegal screen call that Travis Outlaw drew in the Houston game two nights earlier. Outlaw threw his hands up as he got mashed by a Chuck Hayes screen and drew the call. Apparently the other players were teasing Outlaw about this during the morning film session, but McMillan wants his players to do more of that. He said young players were so worried about being labeled a flopper that they overreached in the opposite direction, and wouldn’t do simple things to get themselves foul calls.

Pshhh, Outlaw is a flopper.

I’m not sure if I can quote much more legally and not get man on my tail.

There was about 5 minutes in between our sig changing times, so let’s say there’s 12 of those 5 minute periods in an hour….24 hours in a day…14 days in two weeks.

Thus, for any given period, it’s 4032 of those periods in two weeks. For us to pick this exact period would be 1/4032 * 1/4032 = 1 in 1,6257,024 chance.

So, my lame provider does not carry NBA TV but I do get league pass. This is annoying because I miss all the NBA TV games even though I get everything else. For awhile I had a link of a site (veetle.com) that was streaming NBA TV 24 hours a day, but it looks like the NBA told them to cut it out. Anyone know of another site like that?

I know I could follow shady links but it’s so much easier to have a site that I know will show all of them so I don’t have to search every game.

I'll keep them still
