Phoenix game thoughts
Well the first half of this game showed promise, but let’s face it. The second half was pretty painful to watch. Player breakdown looks like this for me:
LMA started out shooting the ball well, but it appeared that he started to get intimidated a bit by Amare in the second half. Caught up in all that and the officiating he let himself get rattled and was largely ineffective in the second half.
Outlaw was a very mixed bag as usual, that nice lefty finish on the drive was nice to see. The turnovers and defense were not. He still looks a bit out of shape, and still logged 36 minutes.
Joel was Joel, enough said
Stevey Blake had his best game so far, but defense was suspect again (granted parker and Nash back-to-back)
Roy seemed to be getting calls last year but that certainly wasn't the case tonight. He as well let the physicality of the game get to him similar but not badly as LMA, but he didn't get the other numbers he usually gets only grabbing 1 rebound, 4 dimes, and a very uncharacteristic 3 TO's
Rudy Fernandez had a very good shooting game but his normal hustle stats weren't there either. On games like tonight though the Blazers need to realize and take advantage of his offense earlier than they finally figured out to feed him more. It still doesn't seem that he quite has the green light from Nate yet which makes absolutely no sense...
Boom-boom had a very nice flush and overall contributed well I thought. Didn't really make any bonehead plays but the Blazers weren't able to utilize him well in the second half by getting him the ball in the open court.
Frye was decent, but clearly can't defend either Shaq or Amare
Sergio played well, particularly in the first half and did wind up with almost 14 minutes for the game. I feel that he still deserved more PT in this one. He made absolutely no mistakes on the offensive end and certainly did not play any worse defense than Blake.
Bayless got in because it was at phoenix I would guess....I would have much rather had that happen in the first half. He will probably be a nice player but did nothing for us in 6 minutes.
General thoughts on the game
Nate is still searching for lineups and rotations that will work...one thing that he does that drives me nuts, and he did a good bit last year as well is that he makes substitutions and takes players/groups out that are in a groove and playing well and goes back to lineups that aren't.
I understand that Roy needs to be in the game, but if people are doing well and there isn't going to be a huge match up problem then you need to run with people who put you in the game to begin with.
Defense, is rearing its head as an issue...Blazers can't expect to have good shots of winning games when they are allowing opponents over 55% shooting. A lot of this has to do with the help d and defensive rotations are just horrible at this point. Granted playing against teams with talented bigs makes this worse than it will be against some other teams. Dropping off Shaq to help on a driving Amare is going to not end well for most teams. That being said, something needs to be done because guys are not where they are supposed to be.
I don't know if Nate has realized it yet, but Rudy should be the #3 option on most nights for the Blazers. I don't know if Rudy is still just trying to work his way in or what but during a lot of possessions it appears that he has a shot or a lane and he winds up passing it up. Certainly at the end of the game they started to feed him the ball and he looked to score, and he was very effective doing that. I'd much rather Rudy be looking for his shot than Outlaw as he has much better IQ, vision and passing skills.
The PG situation was once again interesting...That's exactly the type of game you can expect to get from Blake on a decent night. He shot 3/5 from 3 which is nice to have, but once again I'm not sure why he gets a rap as a defender. On any decent PG he tends to get abused just as much as Sergio does. Sergio looked great in the first half, 4 dimes, made both of his shots, no mistakes or turnovers and at least as good defensively Blake. In the second half Sergio didn't really do anything but once again no mistakes. It's nice to see him not make the mistakes but he looked a bit too cautious in the second half....perhaps the fear of being yanked? Bayless I suppose played better defense but really didn't do annoying either way in 6 minutes. I really don't understand why he got into the game when he did.
Would have been a nice win to get, but it's tough to go to a playoff team's place on the second game of a back-to-back. Hopefully the Blazers can get a road win earlier than they did last year. Looking forward to next game!

I had time to kill before work...why not write a recap?
Sidenote:
Apparently Monty Williams has nicknamed Outlaw “Catfish”
Strangely enough, I don’t hate it

Evaluating contract extention for Outlaw?
All those minutes for Outlaw when he is NOT playing well?
Nate has little or no patience with Sergio. Appears to be holding back Batum and Rudy.
Obviously Nate is not using good judgment in giving more minutes to Outlaw than almost any other player.
Outlaw has never demonstrated that he is “Starter” material with the Blazers.
I can only conclude that Nate has been told to test Outlaw for long-term retention.

I love Travis
But he is a 5 year NBA pro and he looks more like a rook than Rudy or Nic

Dave
I respect you, your opinions, and your great work on this site.
But Rudy and possibly Batum are demonstrating more talent and team chemistry than Outlaw.
They should be playing them more minutes than Outlaw – not less.
Unless Nate continues to destroy Batums and Rudys confidence like he is doing and has done to Sergio, both Rudy and Batum will prove it out as the season progresses.
It should not take this long for a GOOD coach to recognize this unless there is another purpose.

You were right about Batum before the draft.
Sorry I gave you such a hard time about it. I guess I just couldn’t wrap my mind around a 19 year old french kid being any good. Who’s laughing now?
I think you have to play Travis though. Nate is already giving Batum way more minutes than you would expect, especially considering how short a leash Nate has with his rookies. Everyone accused him of having a man crush on Jarrett Jack and then low and behold they trade him during the off-season.
It’s the exact same thing with Travis. Nate might not love what he’s doing, but his offense is still the third or fourth best option on team right now with Greg and Webster out. Who else can create his own shot? When the points stop coming you can expect McMillian to put Outlaw in the game. Batum is a million time more well rounded than Travis, but he still lacks some of the scoring capabilities that Outlaw has.
It’s early in the season and I think Nate will get his rotation working smoother once he gets all his players back. Rudy only averaged 22 minutes a game during the Olympics. I don’t think him playing 30 minutes a game is going to hurt his confidence. They play shorter games in Spain (40 minutes) so 30 minutes a game probably seems longer to him anyway.

Outlaw's offense......
How many minutes/plays did it take for Outlaw to start scoring in each od the last 2 games???
What did he do to the rest of the team while they were trying to play TEAM ball?
In tonight’s game, he scored eleven (11) point and took almost 37 minuted to do it.
by spencerbutte on Nov 2, 2008 12:51 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree.
He did have a team high 4 assists though. He was passing the ball more than usual.
Nate has a million other things to consider, most of which we probably don’t even know about. Last year I remember a bunch of people complaining that Webster started over Outlaw. No one is saying that anymore. Nate just happens to know a little more about his players than we do. He might have a really good reason for not playing Batum more.
It does seem crazy. When Batum is on the floor good things seem to happen at a steady pace. I got really sick of seeing Outlaw leave his man wide open for the corner three. If Batum keeps playing the way he has I think the odds are good that Outlaw will be gone by the trade deadline.

My point
It should not evolve to the point where it becomes obvious to the fan base.
An example is: “Our Offense is Offensive Part 3 4 by blzrfan”
Everybody went OH YEAAAA! That’s right….. that’s what’s happening….
A GOOD coach should be able to pick up on what’s happening/or-not on the court.
He shouldn’t even take a couple of games to figure it out, let alone…
wait until most of the fans have an AHHH-HAAA moment.

GOOD coach!
In the Spurs game, did you notion how Coach Gregg Popovich worked his time outs and players to change the tempo of our offense? It was only the Determination of our young team to WIN that one.
That was GOOD coaching in Popovichs part. He was doing that DURING the game.

Maybe they want
to showcase him?…….their, sort of, in a catch 22 situation…..they have to keep him playing to keep his worth up, but if he keeps up the unimpressive showings, he’ll hurt himself and the teams chances of getting any interest in him…….if Web can perform, when he comes back, then given the option….you have to take Batum over Outlaw, in a heartbeat……the whirlwind based on potential will have to end at some point…..Someone will have to step in and help the coach out……he seems to have his head in the sand……

I think were in trouble
if Travis is our best option….Would that be a coaches decision?….if so, it’s time to move on
Travis was an option last year, but also not our best one (rabbit out of the hat mentality has to go)…….the next level is….get some offensive flexibility…..Travis could be completely shut down by teams, if they wanted to…but they don’t need to…they like their chances of him jacking up jump shots……he has the shooting % to help this notion

yeah
It seems that we are so young as a team and dont have that experience like these teams have.
It might cost us some calls. I wish we could get a lead in the game and keep it. I also wish we could run more on the fast break. I think Roy wants to run more this year, but something is not clicking cuz we little fast break points. The other thing I want to see is less jump shots and more drives inside and post-ups by bigs. Even Roy can post up cuz he is a strong guard. I cant help but think that we need to make a move for a very good player that can take this team over the hill. KP said that he is going to make a move a it really going to hurt our opponent.

LMA was getting pushed around by Amare all night.
It would have been nice to have greg for this game.
by OOKEY on Nov 2, 2008 1:32 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
If LMA is a bonafide all star talent,
he didn’t show it tonight. Stoudemire is not a good defensive forward, and LMA did not attack the paint like he should. LMA needs to force opposing forwards to play off him. We’re playing Utah next, and we can’t afford for Boozer to brutalize him.

Allow me to be the first to say this...
……………………… I sure hope Nate is clever enough to play tons of IKE against Boozer. I’d even consider starting him and playing LMA off the bench against the scrubbenies for max effect…

You totally lost me with this one, timbo
What is the point of playing Ike against Boozer?
Why would Nate even consider bringing LMA off the bench? What max effect? Starter dominates scrub? What new?
I don’t get it.

Rudy gets only 23 minutes
while Trout gets 37 minutes,
and Bayless gets 6 minutes (with Blake and Roy) in the 4th quarter, and Nate thinks we’d be too small starting Blake/Roy/Rudy against 6’7 Barnes?

Lack of defensive consistancy
Our starting unit was awful on the defensive end yesterday, and it ended up costing us the game. It was our second unit that got things done yesterday.
Isn’t this kind of the same old same old? Amare simply got the ball anywhere he wanted, and then he took the ball anywhere he wanted. I’m not sure what the points in the paint stats were, but I know we got whipped in that department. Phoenix also shot 30 freethrows compared to 14 for us. Then, the few times we did play outstanding defense, Phoenix would hit a backbreaker at the shotclock buzzer.
We will never become an elite team until we can prevent opposing perimeter players from getting into the paint and reaking havoc on us. It seems the other teams we are playing are getting into the paint at will, and we really struggle to do that.
Can I buy you a fish sandwich?

To be fair regarding Outlaw's minutes
The reason he is getting so many is he is basically trying to be both the starting 3 and the bench 4 at this point. He is probably still a better option at the 4 than Ike and Frye has to be the 5 until Greg gets back
I agree about LMA…I believe I heard Tony say after the game that it was good to see LMA at least “hold his own” against Amare and couldn’t help but wonder if he had just seen the same game I’d watched.

………………………………… particularly given the fact that he’s only a power forward in Nate’s dreams.

Alternatives in the toolbox:
1. Ike.

He was playing center last night.
I don’t like either Ike or Shav right now in place of Frye. And let’s not forget that Frye is coming off of ankle surgery.

Nice recap
I thought it was interesting that at one point in maybe the 3rd (?) quarter, we fielded a lineup of Blake, Roy, Rudy, Batum, and Frye. Don’t remember how much success it had, but the combination struck me as a little oddball. It also provoked the following thought:
I wish people would cut Nate a little more slack right now on his rotations. Don’t you think that if we hadn’t had two starters go down with injuries within ten days of each other, Nate’s rotations and minute distribution would look a little more cohesive?
I realize it’s the coach’s job to come up with effective combinations, but he’s incorporating two rookies who are playing substantial minutes and shuffling guys from position to position to make up for the sudden gaps at SF and C…and it’s only the third game of the year. I’m not surprised that he’s relying on a known commodity like Travis more, if for no other reason that he more or less knows what to expect from Travis while he’s on the floor.
Nate has an embarrassment of riches to work with; I’m the first to proclaim and believe that. If his substitutions are still somewhat ineffectual by the 35th game of the year, when he has his starting quintet back and 2/5ths of a season under his belt with the new guys, then I’ll complain — but not before.

We’ll get used to the back to backs…but I imagine the team was geeked the night before last, over the win and didn’t really get to sleep on time….

bunch of whiners. I remember when Sergio said something to Spanish media about his playing time. Everybody jumped on his case and told him to shut-up, cuz he was whining in their opinion. Hypocrites thats what they do, they blame someone for something they do 100 times worse. If I would tell them what they what they say, that is to shut-up they would say " thats a troll". I was an idiot like that before, but I stopped cuz its stupid, and I dont want to act like crazy.

...
Sergio’s best game so far. One thing I noticed is he has a lot of faith with Channing Frye, on that dish where no one was guarding Channing at the top of the key. Not only that but he makes Rudy & Batum play better IMO. By mid season our starting lineup may consist of…
Sergio
Roy/Rudy
Batum/Outlaw
Aldridge/Frye/Outlaw
Pryz/Oden(Eventually)
I also noticed Serg was being very smart with the Basketball, not forcing anything(maybe the one oop, but it went in :)
