What changes? Oden vs. The Vanilla Gorilla
What changes between the offense when Oden is on the floor? We push the ball into the paint to Oden And when he's not, we let Joel get his how ever he can.
I think we need to take Oden out of the offensive sets, and play like joel was in there, and let Oden get his anyway he can.
I don't think we should be force feeding Oden balls down on the block, that only adds more pressure to him. We don't really ask for much offense out of joel, so why should we with Oden.
I think that if we stoped force feeding him the ball and depended on Roy And Lamarcus for offense, for a while anyway, and let oden just get his huffin and puffin back in order, he'll settle down alot quicker than he would otherwise
anyone feel me?

I don't think the offensive difference between Pryz and Oden is all that it's cracked up to be...
Bynum had FOUR points for the Lakers in the opener and they looked pretty good, did they not?
FREE SERGIO -- Trade Him or Cut Him NOW!!!
they...did.
but still. how often do we try to get the ball into joel down by the bucket?
never. ya know. and with oden, we tried and tried…..he just wasn’t dropin shots or snaking to the basket for a dunk…or couldn’t. either way….the point is we did try alot harder to get greg the ball than we do or ever did for joel. right?

Bynum had 8.
And having a low post offensive presence like Oden is much, much, much better than what Joel provides. No one will ever, ever, ever double or triple team Joel and Oden has gotten that from day one since he is so much stronger than most any post defender— one bad game against the Lakers doesn’t change that for Oden, just like it doesn’t change anything for Roy or LMA.
Oden can get and has gotten the garbage buckets better than Joel, and can score on the block.
Oden has a shaky jumphook and it’s still a lot better than Joel’s. Oden is also a better passer already, has spin moves, better footwork, and he just needs to keep working and getting touches to really expand his game offensively.
The offensive difference between Pryz and Oden is the Grand Canyon, and Oden is as raw as he’ll ever be.
I love Joel, but he will always hurt us offensively and make it harder for LMA and Roy since he doesn’t even need a defender to stay on him at all. He is a great rebounder, tough, great defense, and I hope he retires a Blazer. He isn’t anywhere close to as good offensively as Oden, and I think they are equal defensively— with Joel being a better rebounder right now, and obviously more experienced.

Offense against Lakers...
was definitely out of rhythm, but I do not believe it had much to do with the difference between Greg and Joel. The offense looked just as bad in the second half as in the first, just as bad with Joel in the game as with Greg in the game, against the Lakers.
-The Blazers gave the ball to Oden in the post a little against the Lakers, but not every possession.
-The offense looked much more smooth and efficient against the Spurs, but the Spurs were somewhat responsible as was a another couple of days of coaching.
-The Lakers look like a scary-good defensive team with Bynum at center. Bynum is big and quick. Gasol is long for a PF. Bryant is a pest as a help defender. Against weaker centers and weaker team defenses, I suspect that you’ll enjoy seeing Greg dunk the ball off the post-up.
-I don’t think Nate’s offensive game plan is to go through Oden. At the Clippers game, he was clearly the third or fourth option in the offense. He got most of his points on offensive rebounds.
On the other hand:
-I agree, that post isolation plays for Greg are not ideal. Being able to score on post isolations against good NBA Centers is a very high level skill. That’s going to be one of the last parts of Greg’s game to develop.
-Against, good defensive centers, I’d like to see some plays for Greg in the half-court offense, but not post isolation. Give him a back pick for a dunk. Set cross screens so he can establish deep position. Do something to get him an easy bucket or two to help his confidence.
setting picks
do you think oden clogged the lane against the lakers where pryz stays farther out setting pics and being a passer a lot of the time? or was it just the lakers swarming zone?
Doesn't it come down
Doesn’t it come down to development? Oden is a rookie, Pryz is not. Pryz gives you what he gives you and a diverse offensive arsenal has never been part of the package. Oden is a rookie inwhich our immediate and future plans revolve around him being a force offensively in the paint. We need and expect scoring from Oden in the low post. The idea is that will open things up for everyone else. A low post scoring Oden makes everyone around him better.
I think you can debate the “pace” of development, I don’t think it’s something we need to rush or demand of Oden constantly, but you play a player in the manner inwhich you think you will use him. Why stop using Oden as a low post option? The development is needed and in the meantime, in a lot of cases, Oden with the ball close to the basket is a power dunk. Suddenly using Oden as if his skill set is the same as Pryzbillas, with all due respect to Pryzbilla, is lowering your sites on Odens potential, something I would not do when it comes to developing young talent.

I'm going to strongly agree
I think that for now Oden needs to get his points of misses and play the role of defender/pick guy. We have enough offense, and his offensive game is WEAK right now. It also takes a lot of pressure off of him as well. I am in the camp that we should be bringing him off the bench as well until he hits his stride. The fact of the matter is that we can perform pretty darn well without him (example: last night), and we need to give him time to develop. I think anyone can agree with that at this point. Let’s be honest, Pryz is no chopped liver.

Time to develop
But isn’t a big part of that development Oden developing his low post offense? I think there is a subconcious subtext to the idea of using Oden “less”. I think subconciously we are putting the bubble wrap around Oden again. No, you develop a talent like Oden on all fronts. That means supporting his low post game as well as everything else. Of course as a 20 year old rookie he shouldn’t and doesn’t need to be our focal point, but he needs to get touches and plays run for him in the low post occasionally, it makes no sense to “develop” him conservatively and not try to develop skills that Oden does have and will someday use to The Blazer advantange.
"Mother Nature started this fight, I think it's about time we ended it!"
Yeah
But what I mean is just run a few sets for him a game at most, and let him cherry pick the rest of his O. It’s not about bubble wrapping him, but not putting too much on him that he can’t accomplish. I think it’s fairly obvious that he’s got a long way to go, and the sooner we all realize that the happier we’ll all be. I’m not saying he won’t dominate, or even have nights throughout the season where he looks like the biggest monster of all, but it’s going to take awhile for consistency to show and I don’t see the need to run too much O through him when we have so many other weapons. I think by March, if he stays healthy, it will be a different story. But I still think he should come off the bench for awhile to get his feet wet. I again tell you that while Joel is no Oden (once Oden’s in shape), until then he’s also no chopped liver and busts his tail off for this team. This isn’t me hating on Oden, it’s me telling you how I think Oden’ and the Blazers are best served over the course of the next couple months while the big fella sheds a few lbs and get’s his fast twitch muscle memory back.

I don't want him to come off the bench.
I want him to not be expected to be the low post offensive option off of nearly no passes. maybe a few lobs. but 1-3 passes in the post for a few games until he can demonstrate that he don’t need to be fed the ball….and that he can rebound and make good decisions on outlet passes…if he get’s an offensive board he’ll go back up with it…and shoot fouls..but otherwise run the offense through roy aldridge and rudy…..until greg settles down.
but I strongly feel he needs to start.

I only feel this way
for a couple weeks or so, until he gets back in shape. This is a fast paced game and he is having trouble keeping up. I LOVE GREG ODEN, please don’t get me wrong, for real. The guy is awesome. I’m just saying that there is no shame in coming in off the bench for awhile until he’s 100% back to the G.O. we, and him, want him to be.

Last night the announcer for the PTB
called Joel down from the upper level and referred to him as “The Thrilla.” Let’s remember that the nickname “Vanilla Gorilla” belonged to then Bucks standout – Brad LoHaus. For one thing Vanilla is a common reference to something soft as well as pasty white. Joel is not soft.
You can't front on that
I have never even heard of Brad LoHaus before.
He may have been a standout back in Milwaukee, but he is certainly not a name that means something to everyone here in Portland. I like both nicknames and I intend to continue using them interchangeably. To me there is nothing about “Vanilla Gorilla” that says soft or pasty. You use what you like and I’ll use what I like. Please do not take this response from me as an attack, its not. I am as calm as I can possibly be as I write this.

I don’t get why you had to attack Bow4Meow like that. He never did anything to you and here you are hate criming him.

I normally don't correct grammer and spelling but....

can't eveybody just calm down bruh lol bro lol!
Since “LoHaus” doesn’t rhyme particularly well with “vanilla” or “gorilla” (or any other -illa for that matter), by the powers vested in me I hereby declare the nickname applicable to and available for use by Joel “My Last Name Rhymes With Illa” Przybilla.
(Please don’t question my powers of authority, as it will certainly not end well for me.)
What are you talking about? Did you not read the end of my comment?

I just think it is OK to use the Vanilla Gorilla nickname. No negative connotation.

The Thrilla Vanilla Gorilla
I didnt take it as an attack, and I hope you didnt take mine as one, besides I was just replying to Faiths post.
Lohaus was a tall skinny guy with nice range. Had a big arc to his shot when he heaved em up to with decent accuracy. Use whatever you like, it was just information.

lamarcus needs to be in the low post where he can come into the lane with his infinitely more refined and accurate hook.

I agree that he needs to spend more time in the low post...
