RUDY TALK FROM SPANISH MEDIA
For the first time I'm impersonating AmImart. I am translating the most interesting parts of an interview from marca.com.
Rudy's flat is being reformed. He wanted some "siesta" and he told a Blazers employee there was a lot of noise due to the reform so he couldn't sleep. "Blazers institution called someone in the building and three minutes after, the workers were gone. I hallucinated", says Rudy. This is just a little example of what he is living. Each time he touchs the ball inthe Rose Garden, people get crazy and shout his name. In the street, everyone tell him welcome. "It is impressive" he says. "everything is going very well".
LaMarcus Aldridge, the best Sergio's friend in the Blazers roster is very close to Rudy too. "He is a great guy. Each time he sees me, he shout '¡Rudy, Rudy, Rudy!', as the fans do in the Rose Garden each time I touch the ball", says Rudy. The 'Rudymanía' is a fact. "My own team mates can't believe the reaction of fans at me", says.
Before starting the games, Rudy had a ritual. I listened music, stretchings... "I can't do anymore. I have to be with the media just until go into the court. After the match against Golden State, I was injured and felt pained because we had lost. Normally, I would have gone to think about the game without speaking with anybody. Now I have to meet the media" says Rudy. NBA is another world beyond known by him. Most of things are fantastic. "I can feel I am a rookie when dealing with referees. Anyway when they whistle something on me, they explain the reason of the call. Most of the time, I understand what they told me but sometimes I just nod with the head although I don't understand", he says laughing.
Against Golden State, he had 5 TO. Sergio, six. And they were told off, of course. "It is those times which you have to agree you failed (he says in spanish "you have to drop your ears and bear it" I think in english you say "with your tail between your legs"). "Nate was right. I am starting to understand what he wants and I am in the poccess to do it" says Rudy.
Rudy takes seriously when someone ask him about the dunk on Dwight Howard in the Olympics final not to be pretentious. (In spanish we say "I throw balls out" as meaning "I get rid of those kind of questions. It is not really important for me"). In ACB, he was used to exaggerate the fouls he receives but it seems he isn't exaggerating in NBA: "¡They tell me I have to drop often. Last match I've got a foul in attack without dropping and the coach told me that if they strike me then I must drop. I thought "next time I am dropping on to the floor since I can do it so convincingly" he says laughing.
On Sergio
"Sergio is playing amazingly, he is one of the best in preseason. I think he is the back up PG and he is having a lot of PT. I can tell you that based on what I am seeing in the workouts, and how he is treated by others. Against Golden State he didn't score but dished 10 assists. Spectacular", says Rudy. To him Sergio is very important. I feel so good when he is on court with me. He helps me a lot. He is almost as my brother, I knew him a lot of years ago. He helps me a lot not only out court but on court".
He knows, due to the Martell's injury, coach relies more on him and Nate told him so already. "I can't complain of anything. I couldn't imagine I was going to be so good. People loves me, i play a lot and I feel so good", he ends.
Finally the journalist ends with a joke writting "and when Americans care something so close of spanish culture as it is the siesta, nothing can be bad.

wow
Last match I’ve got a foul in attack without dropping and the coach told me that if they strike me then I must drop. I thought “next time I am dropping on to the floor since I can do it so convincingly” he says laughing.
So he is basically saying Nate told him to flop….interesting…

A foul isn't noticed if people don't react to it
It sucks, but it’s true. Shaq was fouled all the time and it wasn’t a foul because… even if you fouled shaq, were you really going to move him? We’re going to see this with Greg Oden and ask why fouls aren’t called. It’s because he can take it and he really can’t react because people would start laughing. Sucks, but that’s the way it is.
We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

Very True
Coach Monty worked with Pryz last year on drawing offensive charges. It worked quite well. It appears that most of the time he was being fouled, but he certainly did sell it too.
Vlade on the other hand, someone would put their hand on his chest and he would go flying backwards.

I like reading and hearing Rudy’s words twisted yet distinctly recognizable.
Rudy will make a big if not huge splash this year, him and our big 3 in crunch time against the L*kers? Cannot wait for that scenario.

Good stuff
Short on time today, so just a few translation comments.
“Reformed” — usually it is people that are reformed (dropping bad habits, changing for the good). Probably you want “renovated”. In America, it would be “apartment” or “condominium” (or “condo” for short). In the UK, “flat” is perfect.
“My own team mates can’t believe the reaction of fans at me”, says. — “to me” is better, and “the reaction of fans”, while technically correct, is a little awkward since it makes two short prepositional phrases in a row. That’s not wrong, it just forces your readers to think a little bit about what you mean, so if you have a better option, you should use it. In this case, you do, because you can use the possessive — “the fans’ reaction to me.” The comma after “me” should come inside the quotation marks — “the fans’ reaction to me,” he says.
Against Golden State, he had 5 TO. Sergio, six. And they were told off, of course. “It is those times which you have to agree you failed (he says in spanish "you have to drop your ears and bear it” I think in english you say “with your tail between your legs”). — Yes, that would be good. Perhaps, “It is at those times that you have to listen to what is said and accept it like a dog with its tail between its legs.”
People loves me — should be “People love me.” Many English verbs use the “s” at the end to indicate singular, and leave it off for plural. “Nate loves me, people love me, jscot corrects my English, jscot and timbo correct my English, Dave at BE writes well, Dave and Ben at BE write well,” etc.
Hope that helps a little.
On the non-language front, I thought the comments about Sergio were really interesting. We know from Batum that Sergio was the fastest on the conditioning drill, that shows he’s really, really been working hard. And Rudy’s comment that Sergio is the backup PG rings true — not just based on what he’s seeing in workout, but also the way others respond to Sergio — that says even more to me.
Can he hold the position? I don’t know, but it sounds like he really is going after it this year, and did a lot of the things he needed to do to get it. Nate will like that he came in to camp in great condition, that goes a long way. And confidence means a lot, and Sergio is gaining confidence right now.
This could be a really fun year. Blake is a quality PG, one with whom you could win a championship, who has really worked hard to be what this team needs, and we have two guys on the team that could be pushing him really hard by the end of the year. By next year’s training camp, the competition could be brutal.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

thank you very much jscot
I think you can be a fantastic english teacher here in Europe. I can feel your passion to teach english and that is very important above all doing it for free. It is funny you use the word condominium. This word is very used in LatinAmerican countries but not in Spain. You did stress just in the parts of the text where it was hardest to me to translate.

Rudy-Lamarcus connection is music to my ears
I was thinking about this on my way back from work today, and I really think the thhe Rudy-lamarcus connection could be outsanding. I was also considering that a Rudy/Martell/Lamarcus/GO lineup could be an offensive juggernaut. With Oden grabbing rebounds and throwing outlets down the floor, Rudy could run with Martell and LMA on the wings and run up scores on the fastbreak in a hurry. Unfortunately injuries are dogging us now, and the Martell injury will hurt us A LOT.
Travis has the skills to be a starting SF in this league, but if he doesn’t get mentally prepared for getting the starter’s role so abruptly, we will have BIG problems early on in the season. LA, Houston, Dallas, Denver, and other teams with good 3’s will cause match up problems for us unless Outlaw is in, but on the flip side, he might become the odd man out offensively. Rudy has made a statement in these 1st 2 games that he is physically and mentally ready to lead the 2nd unit if needed, and appears to become the de facto leader on the floor whenever Roy isn’t in the game.
The way things are going, Outlaw might need to adapt to Rudy, rather than the other way around, and this is what I feel is the biggest blow from Martell’s injury, not the fact that Martell can catch and shoot better than Outlaw. Martell knows how to adapt to his teammates style of play, and has shown that he is capable of doing it. Outlaw has not exhibited this tendency yet, and while it is premature to say that he will always be a 1 trick pony, the signs are troubling for me.
Whew, this was much longer than I intended it to be….I apologize for anyone wasting a half hour deciphering through my stream-of consciousness.

lol, nice post and certainly not a waste of time
Rudy/Lamarcus/Webster is just was i was thinking too! Webster just became WAY more valuable to this team because he “can” play with Rudy & Sergio (the Spain Train). I’m not to sure about Travis.

if i remember correctly
sergios rookie year featured many connections with Outlaw and Freddie Jones on fast breaks. Outlaw never really got that chance since Sergio was so limited to minutes, and oftentimes was found camping in the corners instead of handling the ball last year. Who could forget the 2 half court lobs to Outlaw in the final home game last year in the final minutes? If u need a reminder watch the opening video at the RG.

Did anyone else have a vision of PA as the godfather...
when a phone call shuts down a contractor within minutes.
The reality is he probably didn’t threaten anybody…he just politely purchased the building, the contractor, the city block and the airspace above for good measure. Sleep, Rudy, sleep.
And no flopping!!! C’mon!!! Even if it means not getting the foul…even if it costs us the game…it’s worth it not to have a floppy flopster on the roster. It’s like that’s the premier talent a Euro can bring to the league. “You’re a basketball player? Cool. You’re European, right? Cool. So, like, can you totally flop and stuff?”

Agreed
If he is really hit by somebody, he should show it. Even tough great players sell fouls. But he should not try to become the next Ginobili in that regard, falling backwards on the floor all the time.

The league is talking about cracking down on flopping via penalty...
but the surest cure to the flop is not making the call. Let the guy sit on his butt on the floor, pleading with the ref, while the play continues around him. Nothing is more emarrassing for the player or his fans (not to mention his coach that instructed him to do so).

Not just talking about cracking down
players will now be fined for flopping.
Word.
by joelor on Oct 10, 2008 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
That's the penalty part.
But I think in most instances, the flopping is obvious enough that it can be dealt with on the spot by not calling it, rather than reviewing after the game. The reason why flopping is so obvious is the same reason why poorly done CGI in the movies sticks out like a sore thumb…there’s something wrong with the physics. When I guy gets knocked over by a blow to the chest, sufficient to move him from his feet, it looks substantially different than when a guy propels himself backwards with his feet, pulling his arms and shoulders back and thrusting his hips forward around his center of mass.
I tried to find a different verb than “thrusting” but couldn’t.
Anything that makes referee’s decisions, and thus their impact on the game, less than instantaneous and real time, I am against. That’s my blanket statement anyhow.
And anything that discourages flopping helps GO because he’s gonna inspire a whole new generation of flopsters.
superfluous

Yes I see your point
but it is waaaaaaaaaaaay harder to make a call like that when you are watching, at game speed, often times at a difficult angle. It’s real easy to see in a slow-motion replay.

This lousy penalty was created out of nothing by the Italians to eliminate Australia in the 2006 world cup. In the final minute of the game, otherwise they would have gone on to overtime. Italy went on to win it all.
