Martell Webster has a stress fracture

It's being reported everywhere, and Jason Quick is expected to have more detail on 1080 shortly.

This seems like a good place to start an ongoing thread as news updates come in.

Here's to hoping there's a short recovery time. Outlaw and Rudy are about to get a lot of SF time. Suddenly the minutes don't seem so limited... but man, this feels like the worst luck ever for the Blazers. Martell's normally healthy.

-----

UPDATE: OregonLive confirms it: http://blog.oregonlive.com/blazers/2008/10/webster_sidelined_with_a_stres.html

"PORTLAND, Ore. - X-rays taken last night of Martell Webster's left foot showed that the Trail Blazers guard suffered a stress fracture of his fifth metatarsal. The injury occurred during Tuesday night's preseason game against the Sacramento Kings."

No timetable set for his return yet. Recovery time can be fairly quick if it's not serious.

Hope it's not so bad and he is healthy again in a few months

This would also mean more time for Frye and Diogu since we couldn’t use Outlaw on PF much. Or some time for Nic.

I guess all the intense workouts over the summer are taking their toll on us. Let’s hope that Marty can bounce back quick. He has a very well balanced frame, so he should heal quicker than some other players.

Guess it's good we have so much depth

and that Rudy looks pretty ready to take major NBA minutes. This is a tough break though, where is the fracture?

I'm waiting to confirm, but it sounds like the foot

Similar to Yao Ming last year. When I have confirmation, I’ll update the top post too.

Similar to Yao Ming...

Wasn’t Ming out a good portion of the season??

Man, Webster is so young and talented, it’s hard to see this… THIS TEAM IS ON A INJURY NIGHTMARE

Apart from Oden the team was very healthy last season

Only James Jones had to pause for a longer timeframe.

Yao was out from mid March through the playoffs

which didn’t last long for the Rockets. He was back for the Olympics. This team is not on an injury nightmare. There are a number of bench players who will be missing the preseason to the first couple of months. When I see what is happening to the Wizards, I thank the stars that we don’t have those kinds of problems.

Two players come quick to mind:

Roy

Oden

Both these guys have already had major setbacks… Roy likely will never play a full regular season of basketball… sadly

Likely?

Come on, he’s got a long career ahead of him. How can it be likely?

now, webster is fragile… it’s tough to be a rough team on the court with fragile players who are injury prone

If you think our guys are in the same boat as the Wizards

then you, my friend, are a glass half empty kind of guy. I’m not saying our guys never get hurt, but this is basketball. Roy is there for a good majority of the games, so you can’t really say he’s injury prone. The vast majority of NBA players miss at least some games every season.

i love it how these conversations go

from basketball to personal criticism… all I’m saying is these guys are injury prone and are highly likely to miss regular season games in medium sums… you may not agree with my prediction, but if you look at the last 2 seasons, it’s not far off

I am too and I hear that same fearful voice inside. But you know what? This team is deep, tough and talented. This is just a set back better now then in March/April.

I don't mean to criticize

Sorry if you’re offended. I do get a little tired of ‘the sky is falling’ comments after every little bump in the road. The Martell news is not good, but it’s not a disaster either. We’re not that bad off right now, even with Channing and Martell out for a while with Bayless dinged. To throw Oden and Roy into the mix, I just don’t see why anyone would. I would not say that Roy is more injury prone than anyone else who plays that many minutes, and I can’t be sure about Oden since his career has been all of one preseason game, but there shouldn’t any lingering effects from his injury. There are a lot worse situations all over the NBA. We have a phenomenal one, and any of the slightest setbacks get people all worked up. Sorry, but it’s getting old.

That's big for side-to-side stabilizing.

It’s the whole run of bones along the outer edge of your foot that keeps you from falling over sideways.

Not a good bone to fracture.
That’ll keep him off his feet for a good bit, I’d guess.

So,

Is it Rudy or Outlaw in the starting lineup?

I think it’ll be matchup based. Put Outlaw on bigger guys and Rudy on quicker guys.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6638251

Stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal have been reported with increasing frequency, especially in athletes. Prolonged healing time and the risk of refracture following conservative treatment have led to recommendations for operative treatment including bone grafting of these fractures. An axial intramedullary screw, inserted without opening the fracture site, was used in 10 athletes with stress fractures of the fifth metatarsal. Union was obtained in all patients in an average of 7.5 weeks. All patients returned to their sports in an average of 8.5 weeks postoperatively. There were no operative complications or refractures after screw insertion. Complaints of local pain over the screw head and/or the fifth metatarsal head, seen in 7 of the 10 patients, were relieved by local shoe modifications.

I will put points in your face...

Let’s get it done… more time for Rudy and Outlaw even Batum might see some regular season action.

Fractures of the fifth metatarsal in basketball players.

Fernández Fairen M, Guillen J, Busto JM, Roura J.
Mutualidad General Deportiva, Barcelona, Spain.

Abstract
A prospective nonrandomized study was made of 17 basketball players with fractures of the proximal third of the shaft of the fifth metatarsal. Eight had acute fractures, which were treated with a cast without weight-bearing, and the other nine had stress fractures for which percutaneous compression screwing was initially used. In the first group, union was obtained in four cases in an average of 9 weeks, with resumption of sport by 12 weeks. Three had a good outcome and the fourth was fair. The other four cases, which had not healed after 12 weeks of immobilization, were subsequently treated using compression screws. Resumption of sport was achieved 20-24 weeks after the fracture. Two of these had a good result; in the other two the results were fair. Of the nine patients with stress fractures in which a screw was inserted, all healed between 8 and 14 weeks and returned to sport within 7-12 weeks. Seven had a good result and the other two only fair. There was one intraoperative complication, but no postoperative complications, such as nonunion or refracture, were observed. Even if the non-operative treatment is able to provide a good result, immobilization without weight-bearing does not guarantee healing. In this series, percutaneous screw fixation was able to achieve successful healing in a short period of time. Thus, this procedure seems to be preferable for primary treatment of this lesion in athletes.

To sumarize, for a stress fracture a screw insertion wasthe authors recommended path to faster recovery since non-operation didn’t guarantee healing. Time to recover is 7-12 weeks. However we don’t know the details of Martell’s injury (where was the break). Only the doctors involved will know for sure. But in any case it’s not the end of the owrlkd for Martell and his/our team.

Fifth metatarsal Jones fracture fixation with a 4.5-mm cannulated stainless steel screw in the competitive and recreational athlete: a clinical and radiographic evaluation.

Porter DA, Duncan M, Meyer SJ.
Thomas A. Brady Clinic, Methodist Sports Medicine Center, 201 Pennsylvania Parkway, Suite 200, Indianapolis, IN 46280, USA. dporter@methodistsports.com

BACKGROUND: Fifth metatarsal Jones fractures are common in the athletic population. Optimal screw selection for operative treatment has not been determined. HYPOTHESIS: A 4.5-mm cannulated screw used for fixation of the fifth metatarsal Jones fractures in athletes is an effective treatment approach. STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. METHODS: The authors studied 23 consecutive athletes (24 feet) who were treated surgically with a 4.5-mm cannulated screw for fifth metatarsal fractures (Jones fracture) with clinical and radiographic assessments. RESULTS: There have been no refractures to date. Clinical healing was 100. The mean percentage healing as shown on radiographs was 98.9, with a range of 90% to 100. All athletes returned to sport at a mean time of 7.5 weeks (range, 10 days to 12 weeks). Two athletes experienced a “reinjury” without need for operative treatment. All athletes were recommended to wear orthoses until their competitive careers were completed. CONCLUSION: Fixation with a stainless steel 4.5-mm cannulated screw gives 100 clinical healing and near-100% healing as shown on radiographs. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The 4.5-mm cannulated screws can yield reliable and effective healing as evidenced by clinical assessment and radiographs of fifth metatarsal Jones fractures in athletes.

Not now probably...

He was scheduled to get one, but they might want to wait till next off-season depending on the severity of the fracture.

Webster is still 4th youngest on the roster.

It has sounded like he is in the best shape ever getting ready for this big season. I hope he comes back as strong as ever and he gets his starting position back. He is a valuable part of this team.

Tough break for Webster

It looked like he was set to take a significant step forward this season.

Frye, Blake, and Webster all worked really hard during the summer and got into great shape, but now they are all injured. Were they overtraining?

by trk on Oct 8, 2008 9:53 PM PDT   0 recs

I had the same injury.

The problem is that there is not enough blood flow to that location to heal quickly. Additionally stress fractures take significantly longer to heal. As I am not a doctor, and additionally don’t know the exact location on the bone that Webster broke my information should be taken with a grain of salt. It took me two, two and a half months to heal. Hopefully Webster takes less time to heal.

And then the injuries. Martell Webster is out with a stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal on his right foot. That may not keep him out too long — or maybe it will. Remember, that injury has some history with this franchise — it was the famous Bill Walton fracture, only on the other foot.
