Preseason Game 2 Open Thread: Warriors vs. Blazers

This will be the first chance many folks have to see this year's version of the Blazers, as the game is definitely on KGW tonight, for sure, yup, positive.  What will it look like?  Will we see a repeat of last night's uber-smackdown?  Will the team come back to earth?  Or did they get so far above earth last night that they have no idea where it is anymore?

Feel free to talk about the game right here in the intervening hours and during.  Enjoy!

Can't wait!

I’ll be just landing in enemy territory (SF) when the game wraps up.
Hopefully someone will have the score in the terminal.

I hope both teams play hard

Nate said the unsigned guys will get more playing time today. This game should be a lot different from last night.

Tatum can dance - but can he play?

I would also like to see a little more Batum, since we won’t see him much beyond the pre-season :)
And of course more Rudy Rudy Rudy (and probably less Roy and Oden).

I think Mike B. said Roy won't play today

That’s big time. I’m more interested in seeing if the guys who were good last night are good tonight.

i’ve had pretty good luck with channelsurfing.net and justin.tv.

channelsurfing tends to have tons of sports (and non-US sports), though i doubt an nba preseason game will be on there.

justin.tv is a lot more hit and miss, but last night i was able to find at least the l*kers / jazz preseason game (seeing the l*kers lose is better than nothing).

anybody have any other ideas?

Yeah, I think tonight will be a good game

But not nearly as crazy as last night. Who knows though?

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

Man I love him.

I'm so hyped right now it's redonkulous.

When Oden gets into shape, bayless settles down, LMA finds his stroke and Tell starts canning the 3 ball I just don’t know what you do? I think only top tier teams scare me that much because we can have 3 to 4 of our best players have off nights and still have the firepower to compete with all but tier 1 teams. I’m just stunned by what I saw last night. Alot of what stunned me was our bench. I almost didn’t notice Roy’s play (it was superb) or Aldridge it was all about our new guys. Simply can’t wait for tonight and then my next live game on Sunday. Someone get KP a medal!

Blazer Mania

When I woke up this morning, and looked outside, I knew the season I love so much had finally arrived. Its aroma fills the streets, and its palpable on your tongue.

Contagious smiles, people offering grace, a lot of humming and whistling.

The Blazers season is back, and with it an epidemic of mania for the Blazers.

Will we lose even once in Portland this year? Not if I (and you!) can help it.

The order of the seasons are now officially Summer, Blazers pre-season, Blazers regular season, Blazers post-season.

New from Bend

Hey all I’m new here but have been a Blazer fan for 30 plus years….even when they were losing. Many years ago I played in a state-wide Blazers 3 on 3 tournement and made it to the finals in Memorial Coliseum. I got to meet my favorite Blazer of all time there…Bill Schonely. Great fun! So needless to say I’m not only a Blazer fan, but a fan of the game.

Only recieving 13 games on the tube over here this year so you all know my FRUSTRATION with Comcast and that whole fiasco. AAAAAARRRGGGGG!

So I’ll be hoping to find on line broadcasts for the games. I’ve already seen that you all have some links to check out. Thanks for sharing those.

Here’s to an awesome season and the hope of finding some games to watch over here in the high desert.

I think it’s time that Wheels brings “Rip City” to his play-by-plays this year. After all, it’s bigger than the Shonz…it’s Portland.

Go Blazers!

well it’s actually not that funny, in fact it’s kinda embarrasing admitting I once found it funny, but I was a kid back then you know, and once you start supporting a team when you are a kid it’s hard to stop hehe.

Ok, a spanish-speaking person would read Warriors “guarriors”, and it’s pronounced almost exactly as guarros. Guarro (s for plural as in english) means mucky, dirty, someone who doesn’t wash or take a shower, someone who smells bad…well, I don’t know the EXACT word, but I’m sure you get the point…as said it’s not really funny, bit hey, we were all kids once right?

I got DirecTV as well, and I cannot find it listed anywhere… and I ALWAYS find it listed somewhere. Does KGW, when broadcasting alone, not get their feed picked up by NBA League Pass? That’s a load of aardvark poop!

I’m gonna check out GSOM and see how them all are gonna watch it. If I gotta sit in front of my teenie tiny Bayless’s-wingspan-sized laptop, so be it, but I’d feel a lot better if I could watch it on TV.

WHAT IS NBA LEAGUE PASS FOR IF I CANNOT WATCH MY DAMN STORIES.

I’m gonna go look into this some more, because it is rudyculous to not be able too watch the game WHEN IT IS BEING TELEVISED WITH ACTUAL CAMERAS AND ANNOUNCERS AND ELECTRICITY AND SUCH.

For those interested in watching the Celtics pre-season against Philly over the Internet (DARIUS)

You have to download a software, but it’s developed by a team of former Stanford students so I guess it’s safe (or at least not less safe than downloading some Chinese software). And it’s available for Windows, Mac,… The quality kicks Justin.tv, and there is a channel right now showing NBA TV.

Will have to see how stable it is in the next weeks and what’s on there though.

We gotta see how he feels tomorrow

Part of the concern was, he COULD run and stuff on the knee, but a strong risk of permanent damage that could result in an actual knee replacement was taken into account by the doctors.

Ok, DirecTV was more annoying than usual, I contacted the Blazers and got their engineer on the phone and he told me the Blazers HAVE given NBA League pass access to tonight’s feed but the NBA hasn’t picked it up for whatever reason!

SO, I am trying to get Mr. NBA on the phone to change that.

Just flip the damn switch, NBA! Show the game!

I couldn’t believe how dumb the DirecTV phone people were. I honestly think the last one I talked to, an alleged technical support person, was mildly retarded. I don’t mean that in a cruel way, just an “aww that’s too bad” sorta’ way.

MORE UPDATE

I’ve left a lotta messages and gotten runaround from NBA types, but the Blazers swear they gave the NBA access to put the game on League Pass and the League, for whatever reason, just hasn’t picked it up (yet).

If I’d known this was a problem yesterday or before, maybe we coulda’ done more… I’m sorry everyone. I am not used to failing and this will be a character building moment for myself.

I’m still going to try and try and see if the game got snuck on somewhere, and I know you computer eggheads out there will give us all a link to watch the game on the ‘puter. It’s just, last I checked, I live in AMERICA and being an AMERICAN means watching the Blazers on TV and not my tiny laptop screen.

BUT, I will make do with what I got.

I’ll keep trying, but as the game is so close I am not holding out hope. If this was the regular season, there would be more homicides committed by me to get this done.

Don’t hate me everyone, I tried.

I must admit, watching the Dow tank 500 points on Monday felt something like fun. These are the people who are happy to live in the Matrix and go along with the plan.

After last night’s blowout people were ready to crown the Blazers with an NBA Championship. Tonight, the enthusiasm has been tempered somewhat.

As awesome as last night was, and as bad as tonight has been (Rudy and turnovers!), I just can’t get too excited or depressed.

One, it’s preseason.
Two, its only one game.
Three, our best players aren’t playing (that said, Golden State isn’t playing their best players either).
Four, fans get really manic depressive over these things. High highs and low lows make for an early death.

We’ll see how things go after getting a bigger sample size.

not worried at all

1) Even if his $9 mill goes back on our cap, we still have more than enough flexibility to make a major FA signing

2) We still have the trade-deadline deal trade option instead.

Put me officially in the “whatever” category regarding Darius’ situation.

It’s going to be fun watching this team develop and grow.

Not the greatest game

But I enjoyed watching Oden. 14 and 9 in 20 minutes.. not that he can always maintain that pace, but even if he gets around there in say 30 mpg during the season, I’ll be extremely happy.

by amitp06 on Oct 8, 2008 9:46 PM PDT reply actions

Good game but....

The Spanish boys gambled too much. A lot of big steals, but they also hung their teammates out to dry. Trout was AWFUL. I love Travis, but he was extremely bad tonight.

by EazyRider on Oct 8, 2008 9:51 PM PDT reply actions

They play 80s ball

you know, the kinds that was so fun to watch. Lots of steals and dunks and running up and down the court. Yeah, turnovers happen playing like that. But it can be damn effective too. then the bad boys came along and ruined it all…

Really exciting but..

it cost them a lot. It was just one game though and your right, they were really fun to watch. i can’t wait to see these guys gel and be together at full speed.

NBA Full Speed

Is hard to get a handle on.

I mean stuff is happenin, that is hard for me to comprehend.

Final Thoughts

Batum is very active. His long arms and movement makes him a great target on offense. Love the energy and made an impact on the defensive end. Player of the Game.

Oden looks ready to dominate. Still has stamina problems which led to lazy pick and roll defense and slow rotations. Good progress overall.

LMA seems to have the same game as last year drifting around the perimeter. No notable progress so far.

Bayless seemed to have lost some of that swagger. He doesn’t appear confident with the ball and tends to overpass. Maybe some of that murmur about his passing skills made him overcompensate. Overall, he didn’t make good decisions tonight.

Rudy is Wall Street’s best friend. His playing style lends itself to high risk, high reward. He attempts high risk plays on offense and gambles on passing lanes on defense. The wholeness of his game was on full display. Most people might notice his steals and assists, I also noticed his turnovers and gambles on defense which led to GS baskets.

Sergio had a similar game to Rudy. Both made plays and both gave up plays.

Ike is slow. Slower than I thought. His pick and roll defense makes Frye look like a gazelle.

Outlaw didn’t see a shot he didn’t like tonight. Chucking and more chucking. Bad shots early in the shot clock drives a coach crazy. I guess you take the bad with the good.

One last note. Buke and Wright on Golden State look real good. Both are very active on defense. I also like their aggressiveness on offense taking the ball to the basket.

BINGO, BANGO, BONGO

How about Buke's dunks?

But seriously… I am so disappointed. Why didn’t I temper my expectations like everyone said to?

I’m tempted to excuse the poor execution on offense, as well as the number of turnovers, and attribute them to the rookie make-up of the team… but the fact is that players did gamble too much on defense and they ran lazy pick and roll on the offense. Did they try any play other than the pick and roll? Rudy and Sergio couldn’t lead the offense on their own against more experienced NBA players; Roy is the glue for this team and without him they’re lost.

Speaking of Roy, does the injury issue worry anybody else? Barrett is right, they’re dropping like flies. Webster too? This was supposed to be his year! Thank God Channing’s and Steve’s injuries should subside in a few weeks… And I hope the best for Roy. Oden seems to be steady though.

Other than Rudy going down

this game was pretty fun to watch for me. Last night was all flash and flair it seemed, whereas tonight’s game was more of a grind it out brawl at times. Ugly games have beauty in them too. I would bet that Rudy’s ankle will be fine. I’ve seen way nastier ankle rolls than that where the player was back next game. I’m sure they’ll be a little more cautious with Rudy, and he’s probably likely to sit out at least a game or maybe even a week or two, but I think he’ll be fine.

Here's my take, for what it's worth (not much):

Roy is an All Star.

LMA will be an All Star. He continues to improve. He’s never gonna be a low post masher for rebounds, but 22/8 seems hittable this season. Great offensive finesse.

Rudy is odds-on favorite to be NBA Rookie of the Year this year. The real deal. He passes and hustles and gets to the rim and scores.

Oden = Shaq, pure and simple. Absolutely unstoppable within 5 feet of the rim, finishes everything with a dunk. Decent enough foul shooter so that hacking strategies will be counterproductive. My over/under for minutes a night (25) appears right on, but he might be more like 14 points than his self-projection of “10-12.” Not as good a rebounder as Pryz, but he can catch and finish.

Marty got hurt at the worst possible time for him. This is final exam year and there won’t be any INCs given…

Travis is probably not the answer as a starting 3. He’s good off the bench, but he’s a jumpshooting jumpshooting jumpshooter, with limited propensity to pass. His rebounding is weak.

Blake and Frye, we know about but haven’t seen this year, obviously. Both will be backups or moved after this season. I hope at least one of the two sticks around, but wouldn’t bet five cents on it.

Pryzbilla is in the IDEAL place for him, backing up a 25 minute guy at Center will net him about the same number of minutes as last year. A world class rebounder and solid low post defender with extremely limited ability to catch a pass in traffic and finish.

Sergio is a great passer and horrible shooter of contested jumpers, which equates to trade bait somewhere down the road. The arrival of Rudy Rudy Rudy has saved his bacon for this year.

Rex is a future star but is still at the front end of the NBA learning curve. He should be considered to be a college sophomore with savant tendencies. He CAN carry the ball and he CAN pass the ball and he CAN shoot the ball and he CAN get to the rim and finish and he CAN shoot foul shots and he CAN move his feet and play defense. It’s just going to take a while for him to put it all together against top-level competition. He is the long-term backcourt mate of Roy, I think.

Batum is MUCH MUCH MUCH improved over his summer league debacle. He and Rex are comparable in that they are both going to be quality players in the future, but still have much to learn. Now starting to resemble the answer at the 3. But he’s 2 years off, at least.

Diogu is a top quality 11th or 12th man, which isn’t saying much. But it does give Nate a much needed situational low post mucker for his toolkit, even if he doesn’t use him but rarely. He’s fully competent rebounding the ball, basically competent scoring the ball, but a bit on the slow side.

Luke Jackson now seems to me like the 15th man, given Marty’s injury.

Who’d I forget?

I think the glaring hole is at the 3, not at the guard position. The combination Roy + Rudy + Rex (+ Blake!) is FULLY sufficient down the road a year or two here… Marty and Travis? Maybe the long-term answer in the choice between the two of them is “neither”… LMA with Frye on the side and the Oden/Pryz combo are SOLID.

well said

with Marty going down, all I can do is think “wow, what are our SF options now?” Travis’ game seems ill-suited for the role, and I still think he’s at his best playing the 4. Batum is much improved, but do you want to go big minutes with him this early? What does that leave us? 3-guard lineups I guess.

Say what you will about Webster, and he certainly had a lot to prove the first half of the season, but you could actually realistically envision it happening – he has the right skillset. And brining Travis in off the bench seemd ideal. Now all of a sudden we look thin as hell at the 3 spot. ugh.

Depending on Webster’s timeline, and where he is at when he does come back, with what we are going to see the first month or two at that position, combined with the backcourt of Roy/Rudy/Blake/Sergio/Bayless clearly puts the SF spot as the one to target for a RLEC mid season trade.

Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

I like you analysis..

but I still got to take greGODen as my ROY! Your right, he could be going straight Shaq on people this year. That early dunk where he pivoted a couple of times and then crushed the rim was just a taste of things to come. Rudy is clearly going to be electric this year, i just feel once Greg starts playing full games and gets in shape, his stats will be huge. Plus, once Oden went out, the game change dramatically tonight.

I've been saying all along that Oden will be

the runaway ROY. Even Chuck Swirsky will vote for him.

Not too worried

A 3 guard line line up does not discourage me at all. I fully embrace it. The thought of B-Roy, Bayless, and Rudy tearing up the court together, with LA and Oden alongside gets me so stoked . With Martel out Outlaw will get more minutes to develop his game. The thing I think Travis needs is more playing time against top-notch platers. I get the feeling he is too timid at times.
