Lets trade for Darius Miles!

OK, hear me out. I don't know if there is a rule that I am not aware of that precludes my litte scheme, but it's so crazy, it just might work.

If Miles plays in 10 regular season games, we get his money put back on the cap. Miles has a non-guaranteed contract with Boston and they have too many players on the roster, we hope they will cut him but Machiavelli said that fortune is a lady who must be taken by force (it was the 1500's, violence was their version of eHarmony). Therefore I say we seize our destiny and trade for Darius Miles, then we don't play him and we never have to worry about someone else playing him. We pay him the vet minimum for two years and secure our capspace. We could trade Boston a project and a couple draft picks or something to entice them to do the deal.

BTW it's still a good thing we got Miles retired because you can't overlook the benifits we recieved last year from the medical retirement, we got below the luxury tax and got 80% of that 9 million paid in insurance.

Good idea? Bad Idea? Storyteller?

against the rules

you can’t do that for rather clear ethical reasons.

I think ethics went out the window in the NBA

With the whole Clay Bennet / David Stern lovefest around the Sonics / Thunder.

Ethics be damned! Full speed ahead Snidley!

LOL! Perfect response

Can someone confirm the rule on this? Linky time.

Incidentally

This really should be a ‘Fanshot’ not a ‘Fanpost’. I’m sure Dave will forgive you, though…at least this time. Don’t make him angry, though. He’s a minister!

I briefly had that thought a few weeks ago

E.g. signing Jackson, then trading him and a second rounder for Miles, and never playing him the ten games. I don’t think anything legal speaks against it, but I also don’t think it will happen even if KP wanted to do it and give up a roster spot again that cost them so many nerves and work to clear.

a couple weeks ago..

there was at interview done by either dave or ben with our cap guy saying that mile’s contaract doesn’t work against our cap, but still has to be paid out by Paul. If I remember this correctly, then there is no benefit to trading for darius other than to save paul money, which doesn’t appear to be an issue.
What I am trying to say is that, if I am correct here, even if darious plays 10 games, he doesn’t work against our cap space, but rather paul allen has to pay out the end of his contract rather than the insurance company.

Both

If he plays 10 games in the next two years, the remainder of his contract from that time on goes back on our cap space and the insurance company stops to pay (don’t know if they will also want some money back). If he re-injures himself and retires for the same reason again after appearing in 10 games, the Blazers could re-apply for the cap space relief, but only after a certain time period. It’s a little hard to interpret the CBA in that regard, but it should be ca. not playing for one year. That’s how long the Cavaliers currently have to wait for Eric Snow’s 7 million to come off their books. So it would be too late for our 2009 off-season plans even if that case occurs.

let see

It does not really matter if he goes back on our salary cuz there is no big free agent this summer. If Blazers are going to get someone with a big name it will be through a trade. So blazers will be giving away as much salary as getting in return. But they can get a decent free agent with the cap they will have even if Miles contract goes back on the teams salary. And when we need to resign LMA and B-Roy, Miles will come off our salary.

cap space

helps in trades too, if we have space available we can trade for more expense players without being constricted by the 10% contract difference or whatever.

Trade for him and play him nine games

, games 74-82 of the regular season, and then give him zero minutes in the play-offs.

Problem solved. You’re welcome.

In all seriousness I’ve been chatting a little with Larry Coon the cap guru via email about the Darius situation, and we both agree the Article of the CBA that allows this will likely be tweaked in the next CBA to be more favorable to the team player X was “retired” from. I don’t think this situation was totally comprehended when the Article was drawn up.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.
