A Star Is Born - Nicolas Batum!
Dunks. Blocks. Defense. Is this a dream?
This guy is AWESOME.
Where did he come from?
He's got "eyes" for the floor. BIG EYES. Reminds me a bit of James Jones.
How did Pritchard ever find him? How did he snag him from Houston'?
He finishes at the rim with unbelievable smoothness. Reminds me a bit of James Worthy.
This guy is the real deal.
Where did his game instincts emerge from? People initially thought he would be spending some time in the D-league.
His presence changes the game - 6 feet 8 inches in height. His defensive stance is beautiful. He was guarding Tony Parker multiple times tonight and did good. He probably should've been on him in the middle of the game. Actually, he was on the floor with 34.5 seconds remaining, but wasn't on Parker. After the Portland timeout with 22 seconds, he wasn't with the finishing unit. But, he was the first off the bench when the Blazers won the game.
Unbelievable athlete.
Stat Line vs SA:
12 Pts (5-9 FG), 1 3P (1 -3 3P), 2 Blocks, 1 Steal, 1 Offensive Rebound, 21 Minutes
Does he have a NIKE contract yet?
THE STREAK OF losing TO SAN ANTONIO IS BROKEN.

I gotta agree
I was not expecting him to be this cool this early. We’ve all heard about his defensive presence but I had no idea this kid could hit the trey, or that he was that good on the fast break. Very impressive. I didn’t even question his age or maturity when he had his hands on the ball, in fact I was telling my girlfriend that they needed to put him back in in the second half. I am a fan.

hmmm... it woudl be tied with Rudy...
I want to see more from Batum as Rudy is more proven now (thought not AS proven when pritchard snagged him) Still, Batum was a find and I’m glad we snaked him from SA. Can you imagine that team with him?

Thank god Batum didn’t go to San Antonio. I was enraged that Outlaw was in instead of him any number of times. Batum is looking amazing! That block on Duncan was SIIIIICK!

I expected Rudy to be good
Rudy’s performances in the Olympics and in the ACB league last year were impressive enough that his performance so far shouldn’t be a surprise.
Batum really is surprising though. Batum’s play in Europe and in summer league wasn’t that great, and he hadn’t done anything to indicated that he would be this good this soon. Props to Batum for exceeding everyone’s expectations.
I’m starting to think that our best lineup this year will be Rudy/Roy/Batum/LMA/Oden. We have certainly been blessed with an impressive crop of rookies.

Batum was always projected as a lottery pick then slid
He had a few questions raised in his eurolegue about desire and being soft (I think those are now answered. Then as the draft approcahed he only worked out for a few teams and I believe San Antonio really wanted to steal him. There was some questions about Batum’s health and the Spurs held onto his medical records which made teams wonder and guess. He slipped. It was geat when KP made the deal with Houston to pick the Spurs pocket by jumping a spot ahead and selecting him. It was made all the sweeter tonight as he helped to beat them.

Here is a nice highlight clip (got deleted from Youtube, but I found it here):

And of course he was already playing great in Europe for three years, winning MVP titles in prestigious junior tournaments, a European U18 championship and the French national title as well as a few good performances in the EuroLeague. All of which got the attention of quite a few scouts.

Actually, the real legwork was done
by Pritchard’s former employer, the San Antonio Spurs.
Recall it was the Spurs who were widely rumored to be very high on Batum for weeks before the draft. But at #26, they had little hope of nabbing him until…. Batum’s stock started dropping due to rumors of possible heart problems. However, the Spurs were reportedly in possession of a private medical report that gave him a clean bill of health. As Batum fell further and further, San Antonio kept the contents of this report a jealously guarded secret. They seemed to be the only team who was really certain that the Frenchman had no real cardiac issues. Everything was proceeding according to plan until Pritchard unexpectedly traded with Houston at 25 to steal Batum from under their noses. With the pundits still aflutter over KP’s Bayless deal, this move went largely unnoticed – except by many Blazer fans who were incensed that he had traded away the rights to Darrell Arthur and Joey Dorsey to make it happen.
Pritchard knows Spur GM R.C. Buford and respects his nose for talent. He also knows that San Antonio has the bext overseas scouting operation in the NBA. I’m guessing the Spurs’ intense interest in Batum motivated the Portland GM to take a closer look at the kid for himself. The way things are now unfolding, it appears that the Batum trade may eclipse the Bayless deal as Pritchard’s real draft day steal. And how ironic is it that Batum has his regular season coming out party against the very team that so badly wanted him for themselves.

It's gotta be Outlaw.
I saw it again tonight how he doesn’t look to play with the team. He had some great steals (3) but took many ill advised shots. Everything Batum did was in rhythm. Martell runs the floor well and is deadly from 3 and also plays good defense. I think either one of those guys is a nice starter and to have such a great perimeter defender coming off the bench will be delicious. I just don’t think we can waste those minutes on Outlaw once Marty returns. Sadly I think Outlaw is the odd man out along with either Sergio or Bayless and RLEC I think that gets us our final veteran piece or a high pick in a gamble for Rubio.

Prince
Part deux?
I used to be able to get some Mexican TV in my old place on the pecan orchard and they just called Prince flaquito. Batoom looks skinny and maybe fragile . . . until he moves with or without the ball. I saw him in places SA was willing to let him get to that we didn’t even capitalize on. OOOOH! I think it is Outlaw
who is in jeopardy. Martell plays gritty defense not gambling and weakside help defense but stay in front of your man bump and grind defense. It’s an easy choice for KP to make and I think the extension of Martell says exactly that.

You have gotta take Martell over Travis. He does the number one thing we lack right now (other then Oden) he drains the 3 ALOT. Travis might have edge him in percentages last year but Martell hit 3 times the number. Martell will be a beast when gets back I guarantee it.

Travis was better than Martell last year. However Martell’s 3rd year was better than Travis’ 3rd year. I tend to agree that Travis seems to be the more expendable of the two… until you consider that he’s very close friends with Roy and LA— I don’t know how much that will end up meaning.

signed Marty to the contract so he becomes more easy to trade, that is the team that gets him knows he will be there for a while. They would have to give up something good for him and would want to make sure what they get in return will be there for a while.

Frankly, I was getting tired of the constant talk all summer — Batum this, Batum that. Will Batum be healthy? Will he be able to adjust to the pro game? Will NB be able to handle all the double teams? How is Batum’s passing game? Will he bring us a championship in 2009 or will it take until 2010? All I know is it was good to finally end the hype and see him in a Blazer uniform. We’ve been waiting so long.

more on Nic
its one game so no final judgments yet… but it appears that:
- on offense he is Travis in year 3 or so (much better jump shot than rookie Travis but doesn’t have the fadeaway that Travis displayed last season so well).
- on defense he is (from the looks of things) better than Travis right now.
Batum appears to make Travis very expendable. We need to see if he can do this regularly, but he certainly shows the potential to be Travis but with better D. It will be very interesting to see how the roster shakes out over the next year or so.

2nd unit guy - i hope
dont get me wrong im a huge batum fan. you can throw him out there anywhere and i think he is going to make plays, and i think his defense is better than webster and outlaw. but..i almost preferr outlaw starting. i love his speed. when martell comes back i think he is going to play very similiar. fast and all over the place and probably be alittle better. and i think rudy and sergio will make both these guys better. i think they set pryz up better than when he is in the 1st unit. though my fantasy 2nd would be sergio, rudy, go, webster, and batum. i dont think it would fit position wise but it would be to watch. our starters play pretty slow and methodical, not that theres anything wrong with that, you always knew trevor hoffman is going to throw you a changup but he still strikes you out. the only fast break they are going to have for awhile is going to be webster, rudy or batum. you have to give rudy some weapons or he loses some of his potential. anyway, it was a quality win and we have matched our win percentage from last year. go homers!
by riccc_l on Nov 1, 2008 12:00 AM PDT 0 recs
trade him or teach him
outlaw hurts the blazers when he is on the court in lots of little ways that don’t show up in the numbers. defense. ball movement. awareness. He’ll make a great play and turn around and kill you with slack defense or a poor shot choice. He plays defense with his arms, not his body. He does have some killer instinct, but he is really undisciplined mentally. Batum is already a much better all around player than travis. because someone took the time along the way to teach him some basketball fundamentals.
by Blazin' on Nov 1, 2008 12:25 AM PDT 0 recs
Agreed
I missed maybe a total of 5 minutes of the game tonight from time to time to hand out candy, so I can’t say for sure, but did anyone see Outlaw pass the ball? I swear, I think he jacked it up every time he got his hands on the freaking rock! No joke. I understand that it’s only one game, but Nic seemed to let the offense come to him within the flow of the game, and his defense as mentioned many times above is already better then Travis “The Black Hole” Outlaw’s. I think Travis is a talented young player but I’ve already seen enough throughout preseason and tonight, Nic needs to start until Webster’s healthy and collect some of TO’s minutes.

A steal
Batum put up a better line tonight – for what it’s worth, than any other 1st round draftee with the exception of Love, and maybe Rose, who played 34 minutes, and Westbrook. However, it doesn’t mean a lot given rookies, but when you do it against the Spurs, it says more. Beasley, Mayo, Gallinari, Augustin, Love, Rose and Westbrook were not playing the Spurs. Gordon was the only one starting against a team like the Lakers, and positively disappeared.
Batum will be up and down – let’s face it. But he is certainly more NBA ready than any one thought – as he demonstrated. Mac commented at one point in pre-season that Batum is the ideal sized SF.
And yes, I happen to believe that if Batum matures normally, that Outlaw is the one who is in a tough spot. He’s essentially a combo SF/PF, but Frye’s a better fit with Pryz at the #2 PF, and is our only option as the #3 center if Oden or Pryz are out – which is likely to happen 15 -25 games a year. Outlaw can play some #2 SF, but he can’t play the #3 Center. And it now appears that unlike on most teams, where the #2 SF steps up if an injury to the #1 SF occurs, the Blazers don’t really see him in that role that much.
And, if Batum matures normally, then you have to wonder just how you fit Outlaws game into the SF/PF spots. He’s too expensive to not play.
Like many, whatever happens, KP stole this kid. In fact, he may very well turn out to be the best natural SF of this draft. Now I’m just waiting for KP to be arrested. What is the penalty for stealing players?

Immediately Impressive-Slowly Convincing.
He sure looked good last night against SA. I have to admit I was very sceptical. I had mostly seen Batum in summer league. I’ve been very impressed by what I have seen this season. For a 19 year old he seems to have an advanced on the court maturity. He’s definently shown me why with tough decisions to make about this roster we decided to give him a guaranteed contract. Good Job Blazer Management. I’m for using him as we are using him, I want to see a little more. Right now he’s suprising opposition. Let’s see if he can be consistent and how he will react when opposing defenders start paying closer attention to him. Batum…Impressive, keep on convincing me.

Channing Frye with the monster dunk and Batum about 5 different times. That block on Duncan. Driving layin. Guarding Parker. Hitting a three and airballing a three after traveling for no reason. Batum played exclusively the three while Outlaw played the 3/4.
