blazers sign Webster
Blazers sign Webster to a 4 year extention. I dont kbow the details but the news came out of espn. So Martell Webster is an important peice to the team and everybody that was talking crap about him got served now. Go blazers. Well KP knows when to sign Players when they are injured. Now Webster can either come back more motivated or just say that he got his extention and take it easy from here. Sorry for mispelling cuz i tried to do this real quick before anybody does this. Post any details if you have.

I posted some details in the fanshots
If we are signing the Webster we saw in the first pre-season game I have no problem with this. I’m worried about his injury lingering and hurting his game in the future.

I was gonna say something br…. nah. People were worried about Brandon and LMA having lingering issues last year. Now it’s a couple of other guys. It’s a sweet deal, and the surgery seems to do a good job of eliminating the lingering effects.

I like this deal
He’s a guy who could have gotten some full MLE offers next year. Getting him for 4 years at 5 per is good value. Even if we want to trade him this season, in the offseason, or sometime after that, its a very tradeable contract for a guy with bankable skills.

Yeah reasonable
for both parties, not too much for the team and Martell has options if he blows up after 4 years.
It clears the cap hold and shows that he wants to be here. The fact that he was signed while he was injured shows that.
Well done by both parties, and lets see if a Channing deal is announced soon as today is the last day to negotiate both Marty and Channings contract.

ive been working on a fanpost about this, but...
the more I think about it, the more I don’t think Channing fits with us. Figure even when healthy, Greg is likely to be a guy who missed 10-15 games a year or so. When he’s out, we just have nothing behind Joel in terms of interior toughness and rebounding. I think we would be better off with a backup 4 who can bang inside and fill in at center when Greg or Joel is down.

I'm stunned, in all honesty.
He is being paid James Jones money, with three guaranteed years and a team option for a fourth. Even if he stops improving, unlikely for a 21-year-old, he is an athletic shooter who will average 12+ points per game.
I honestly think he is the small forward of the future. He tries on defense, shoots well, and showed great flashes of slashing potential in that first preseason game.
This is one of my favorite moves KP has made.

Cap Status Update
using Storyteller’s info, assuming first year is at $5 million:
commited contracts: $32,978,464 (9 players)
Petteri/Freeland holds: $824,200 each
Frye Cap Hold: 12,794,283
Ike Cap Hold: 11,840,625
Blake after July 1: 4,000,000
Outlaw after July 1: 3,600,000
So, we can clear close to $30 million by waiving Blake and Outlaw and releasing all holds
We can just let Frye and Ike walk, keep Outlaw and Steve and the unsigned rookies and still clear $20 million.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.
by douglast on Oct 31, 2008 3:55 PM PDT 0 recs
Corrected
Ike Cap Hold: 11,840,625 $0
IF he is still here after feb 21st.
Channing is the only wildcard in this mix and I think KP will see how Frye does this year and decide from there. Hopefully he will be amenable to the team and sign a deal like Webster 4y/$18-20m total, a little less as he was an 8th pick and Webster was a 6th.
Wonder if we will see some action from Channings side by the end of the day.

2 things
1) Use 300% of the player’s 2008-09 salary to create the cap hold, not 300% of their qualifying offer
2) Webster’s deal could start as low as $4,319,654 in 2009-10. In fact, since this would be the ‘cap-friendliest’ way to structure the contract, my hope is that this is the case.

KP just extended Webster…what makes you think he’s still in the market for veteran small forwards?
I suppose he could’ve signed Martell to deal him later, but that would be stone cold and not like KP. I also don’t suspect Martell will be earning 5 mil/year to be a backup 3

Who says there are no PG's available?
It’s no secret, according to ESPN, that Ray Felton is on his way out of Charlotte. Larry Brown wants Augustine. We can offer Sergio (he can back up Augustine) and Outlaw (he can back up G. Wallace) and maybe a pick to top it off. That will create along with Blake an absolutely deep and competent Point Guard rotation – no superstar PG just 48 minutes of classic PG play. This also reduces the rotation and the money is a wash. Felton is an excellent young baller. Try it, you’ll like it.

It is so freaking unfortunate that he hurt himself early this year. I truly believe he was going to have a tremendous year for us this year. I think he’ll be getting back to form in January.
Just because we signed him doesn’t mean we’re getting rid of Travis. Only time will tell though. I think Channing will end up being shipped out eventually. TO will be backup PF, and Batum will be back up SF.

Thoughts.
I’m afraid I have to disagree with some of you on Channing. To start with, he and Pryz are your second team players. Pryz is the banger you need, let’s face it. And if you have Pryz, you need a second team PF who can score, which is Pryz’s weakness. Outlaw is not a real PF, however you may see him, either when it comes to rebounding or defending. Channing is better in both categories than Outlaw, and if he has improved his shot, as it appears he has, then he’ll get as many points as Outlaw. Further, Channing can fill in at Center – and give credible minutes. And he’s the only other player on the Blazers that can do that. Outlaw, Diogu and Randolph can’t cover that #3 center spot. And as you can see, we’re probably going to have 10 – 25 games a year where either Pryz or Oden are not playing. So just who do we use if we get rid of Frye?
The bottom line for me is that Frye is a better #3 center than almost any other team has, and that as long as we keep Pryz, we’re going to need a Frye at the #2 PF spot.
As far as Webster, the Blazers made a statement. I hate to tell some of you, but I don’t think the team has any intent of trading for another SF right now. Webster is only 22, and Batum is 20. KP, for now, is set.
Outlaw is another story. He has one singular weakness – and that is that he plays well as a second team SF, but he doesn’t seem to be the right fit for a first team SF. On any other team, if your #1 SF goes down, the #2 steps in. But here, we have the #3 SF stepping in.
So the debate on Outlaw – assuming Batum keeps progressing – is very relevant. He can’t compete with Channing for the #2 PF and #3 center spot, and he’s not a true fit at the #2 SF unless the #1 SF is playing. Batum, further, has demonstrated several times that he has some offensive ability. It needs to mature, but if he can eventually be counted on for 10 -12 ppg for 15-20 minutes, and if Channing also can put the same points up for similar time – where does that leave Outlaw?
My take is “Gone”. He’s too one-dimensional. Ironically, Websters injury and Batum’s presence has high-lighted this fact.
