Good deal for the Blazers

if he really breaks out … not a bad deal if he doesn’t.

And for cap purposes, you can't wait until the end of the season.

His Cap-Hold would have been around 12 million, so that would have limited our options after the season.

Right

Looks like they’re “riding it out” with Frye and Diogu

KP just put Webster into the “keeper” category, not that htis deal makes Martell less-tradeable later

But Marty > Trout in regards to long term Blazer status. No surprise there

by two4larue on Oct 31, 2008 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Doesn't it make him MORE tradeable?

That would be an attractive contract if Webster puts up good numbers when he comes back. I’m not saying we should trade him at all. It’s just nice to have that option.

I believe he becomes a base year compensation player

but seeing as how he is not getting a big raise, I’m not sure it such a big deal. I don’t want to trade martell though.

by NWfan on Oct 31, 2008 5:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Neither do I.

I think he would be perfect coming off the bench.

I’ll extend thee laddy, then we’ll have ourselves a little fun

Hey, nice

I did not expect this, actually, and I’m a Webster fan.

I hoped we sign him for Outlaw type money and see what we got this year. Now there ain’t no cap hold, and his contract is good for a trade OR good if he is our SF!

It’s a no lose situation, I think… even if Webster remains as good as he was last year, except more experienced. Teams always need an athletic shooter.

I hope for the best for Webster, and this is nice news I think.

wow

I am surprised.

Not a bad value, so no complaints from my end, but I’m surprised.

Me, too

Not that KP would do it, but that MW’s agent would not want to wait and see what #8’s market value is next summer

Looks like Marty wanted “security” and = to stick around, it would suck if he got traded in February after agreeing to this deal

Remember, he was thisclose to being a Knick (before Penn found the trade exception) in the Z-Bo deal

great deal for KP

Oh I like this a lot

Same cost as James Jones for a younger more versatile player..

by tweener on Oct 31, 2008 3:34 PM PDT reply actions

That is really good value that keeps all options open

That contract is big and long enough to make Martell happy, and small enough to not cripple the franchise and/or be attractive in trades if something goes wrong. Everybody wins. And the stupid cap hold is removed, freeing up space for a major guy next summer.

didnt realize the deadline was tonight.

otherwise I would have read into this too much. Like an upcoming outlaw trade. If it really is 20 million over 4 years this is a great contract for us and Marty I believe. He might have got more on the open market, so maybe this is a sign that he wants to stay in portland. I hope so. I didn’t realize how much he brings to this team until now. He is a quiet threat.

by oden is GOD OF WAR on Oct 31, 2008 11:25 PM PDT reply actions

Really hope they extend Frye

He just belongs in Portland. And after last night’s performance, I’d say he cemented that.

by DonkeyShins on Nov 1, 2008 10:07 AM PDT reply actions

frye

frye has a qualifying offer so chances are if he gets resigned it’ll be last second when other teams make their offers. blakes contract is up after this year…so what happens with him?

other possible pickups

looks like David Lee and Linus Kleiza might not get extended. these guys would make awesome role players on our team…thoughts anyone?

Honor Terry Porter

by Philthyanimal on Nov 1, 2008 11:48 AM PDT reply actions

I wouldn't be against Kleiza as a backup if we would trade away one of our SFs to upgrade another position

I think Lee will stay in NY, and get overpaid to do so (significantly more than the MLE). He is solid, but Morti once laid out very cogently why he isn’t that amazing.

I think in retrospect keeping Kleiza might have been better than trading him for Jack on draft day night, though one can never know if he had developed in Portland like with the Nuggets. And if we got Bayless :)
Is he good enough to be our SF starter? Probably not even if he gets more minutes, since he is streaky and not a great defender.

by Norsktroll on Nov 1, 2008 1:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I suspect David Lee will command a large contract.

His rebounding is insane, and his +/- is almost as sick. He almost single handedly beat us last year on the offensive glass. Would love to get him, but I think he will too much for us to afford.

by oden is GOD OF WAR on Nov 1, 2008 8:24 PM PDT reply actions

he did

isnt it wierd how a lot of players have their breakout games against us? or does it only seem that way?

hahaha maybe

I know Amare Stoudemire had his career game against us.

Nate Robinson also had his against us.

by Duck4Lif3 on Nov 1, 2008 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

This guy should be traded

Don’t get me wrong, I like both Webster and Travis’ characters.I just can’t trust high schoolers—Their BBIQ, their ability to handle themselves in big games, their team attitude, and some wrong acknowledgement of NBA,etc.I always believe there are lots of things to learn in college and which will never be taught in the NBA.Though can’t prove it, I just feel this way.Look at 24, LBJ, KG, Josh Smith,TMac, Howard, etc, they could have become way better if they go to college. This is why current NBA games aren’t as fantanstic as in 90’s.

It's about team basketball

They are good players, but you can’t measure players just by statistics or personal skills.Good players will sacrafice themselves sometimes just for good ball movement, good team chemistry.Jordan is great, but he didn’t get 81 a game.He might be able to score that number, but it’s not basketball things. Our Brandon is a more evident example.

I'm happy for Marty and I hope he continues to improve

I don’t think he’s there yet, or that he’s a sure thing, but for his sake and for the team’s I hope…
