Junk Drawer 10/30/08- Trolling Free Edition (or so I hoped)! Now featuring: The long awaited Fatty appearance~
OK first things first. I am just as upset as everyone else about what has happened. In fact, I was on Bedge for more hours yesterday than I worked awaiting the official news. However, in all honesty the news could have been a lot worse than it was. The match ups that we were all looking forward to in the next few weeks(Duncan, Shaq, etc) will happen again this year. We wont hear his name called in the starting linup tomorrow night like we had hoped. But we will get through this guys! We will have a great season, barring any more injuries (cursed statement, I know). Tomorrow nights game will still be fun to watch (ummm…let’s hope the rest of the team actually plays).
Of all the things that bugged me the most yesterday, it came down to the trollers on this site! What happened in a 24 hour period here on Bedge??? Good lordy! Of course I fell into their trap and got ANGRY with their comments made. Finally I had to stop commenting back. One game into the season and 20 different posts about Oden…it’s enough to drive a person (ME!) crazy. So, can we take some time off today and discuss how great and fun tomorrow night’s game is going to be?
McFadden’s to anyone who wants to meet up prior to the game at 5:00 pm. I know Sophia, Andy, myself and TiH will for sure be there….how about you?
And DON’T FORGET TO WEAR RED to the game tomorrow night!
So Fatty has made an appearance for those of you who cared and waited a year with baited breath.

Since the JD post was so on topic
How abouts some Lil’ Wayne news to brighten up the morning?
Last week, when Lil Wayne, 26, became a father for the second time to baby boy Dwayne Michael Carter III, at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, he wasn’t handing out cigars in the waiting room. He was right there in the delivery room.
“I delivered him. I held the left leg the whole time. It was nasty, very nasty, but it was wonderful.”
What a true man, delivering the baby no less! Oh wait..he just held the leg? Ummm, last time I looked that’s not delivering a baby. And who could ignore this great statement… “it was nasty, very nasty”.
New top song in the making?

Perhaps the baby came out bottom first?
That is called a breech birth if I remember right. They are dangerous because when the baby’s skin hits the air they inhale because its cold, which can be a problem if the head hasn’t come out yet.
Way back in in elementary school my 4th grade teacher found the need to tell us that he was born feet first. This didn’t strike me as odd at the time, but now I think that is really was TMI

Similar tools exist for all major browsers, e.g. Adblock plus. But probably you can’t install them in all work environments.

Yesterday was rough.
I visited the Bedge like I do every morning, but instead of staying on most of the day, I quickly left. I saw a bunch of fanposts about Oden and how everything’s gone to crap, then saw the trolling and figured it wasn’t a good place for my convalesence from the opening game. Now that we know Oden will be fine, however, hopefully the discussion will be more fruitful here today.

Lebron and Jay-z say get out and vote
James, Jay-Z energize rally for Obama at The Q
Is there really any chance James is not going to play for the Brooklyn nets? I say no, unless they win a championship and the feeling of accomplishment overwhelms him.
The “host” over at Fear the Sword wasn’t exactly stoked about it
While LeBron can surely do what he wants, I feel it is in bad taste to get “Cavs Insider” e-mails promoting what was a political rally. That’s just me.

The superstar exception
During the 3rd quarter, kobe drew a foul on Joel, which apparently set kobe in motion and the fakers never looked back.
My problem was the foul itself. What I saw was Joel standing near the foul line when an out of control kobe charged into Joel. Predictably the call went against Joel.
Even worse, Doug Collins kept going on and on about how Joel’s hard foul on kobe was the factor that caused bryant to erupt offensively. They never replayed the foul itself, but Collins kept repeating how that play made the difference.
Did anyone else see it the same way. (faker fan who wears bryant jersey to the Rose Garden need not reply)

by bow4meow on Oct 30, 2008 8:36 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
My buddy and I thought the same thing
But Joel wasn’t 100% set so there was some grey area. If it wasn’t Kobe it could’ve gone either way, but see as it was, there was no way Joel was getting that call.
by KobeStoppa on Oct 30, 2008 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m right there with ya. Joel commits his fair share of hard fouls, but in that situation I don’t think Joel was in the wrong. It did show me just how strong Kobe the ‘freak’ really is though! I don’t think joels intention was to draw a charge though, he wanted to send a message to Kobe… to bad he set Kobe off instead. If he was trying to draw a charge he would have given us one of his famous flops. lol

what changed the ref’s perception , besides the fouled being Kobe Bryant, was the flip of the forearm by Joel . It made it look as if Kobe was thrown way off when in reality he just flopped ..

fair screen ?
Joel wasn’t setting a screen, and no other players were nearby. I may be wrong, and would love to see the replay, but again, it looked to me like kobe just didnt see Joel and ran into him. Since Joel is a real man and kobe is (see below pic), so kobe was the one who flailed his arms while Joel just raised his arms, and in no way did Joel flip his forearm at kobe. kobe gets those calls and Doug Collins perpetuated the incident the rest of the game.
In the fourth quarter Channing got run over by Odom I think, and the ref’s called it in Frye who just stood there perplexed.
Its hard enough to beat the lakers fairly, and when the ref’s give him the continual benefit of the doubt, it gets aggravating. Im not saying that call was the difference, we got beat soundly.
But why the favoritism?

They just had 23 wins last season. While I have them penciled in as a competitor, they might be easier to manage than a few other teams.

Funny stuff from the B.S. Report
Take the roster of the San Antonio Spurs: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/teams/roster?team=sas
Now take away Tim Duncan (32), Tony Parker (26, free agent in 2010), Manu Ginobili (31). You end up with a pretty horrible team of really old guys who will retire soon (Bowen, Finley, Thomas) and a bunch of relative no-names – sorry Ime ;-)
In a few years, that team won’t be very scary anymore if they don’t start to act now and make some changes for the future.

It is funny
They are all so old!!! Shoot, even Duncan and Ginobili are getting up there. Somehow they manage to pull through come playoff time. I don’t get it (and I don’t think it’s cuz they are veterans either…most are just OLD).

What can the Spurs do though?
I would think they’ll continue to win 50 games as long as Duncan is in a uniform and on the court, and they’ll have to build around Parker if he doesn’t capitulate to another team (that doesn’t make sense and is a cheap thing to say but my delete key is broken).
All the Spurs can do is just wind down slowly and wait to become bad again and draft good once again.
No team with good draft picks will trade for either Duncan or Ginobili because of their age, and losing Parker for youth doesn’t make any sense when he has 8 years left.
I think the Spurs should feel fine though— they have won 4 titles with this group, after all. Not too shabby.

I don't know about anyone else
But I’m very relieved about Oden.
The news isn’t bad at all and just needs rest. Like most of us though, I worry about his conditioning, and I think he already has a nutritionist so I hope he is able to keep losing some weight.
Martell says he has lost weight since getting hurt, so I hope Oden does the same thing.
He’ll still struggle to get his wind back, but as long as he keeps working out (which he will) I don’t think it’ll be much worse than what it is right now. And then in 2 weeks, we’re almost out of the woods with our horrible schedule, hopefully stolen a few games here and there, and the lower national focus allows Oden to breathe a lil’ bit.
We are lucky to have Joel Przybilla has our backup, but we can’t forget how much Oden means to this franchise.

He is going to get some more run, I hope he is up to the task. I am also relieved by the Oden news. Its definitely going to hurt his conditioning. Maybe he can ride the little hand exercise bike thingy to make up for it???

They'll have him riding bike and swimmin' pool
I think it’ll be good enough to keep his conditioning right where it is right now… which is to say, it needs work, but he’ll be able to play 25+ minutes as soon as he gets back if not more.
The door swang open not only for Channing, but Ike! Ike never got his chance to show what he can do since Channing came back so fast from his ouchie foot. Ike is talented, has a good banging PF body, but just hasn’t ever been able to take advantage of a situation or free minutes (he hasn’t ever gotten many, but still).
This sort of injury is totally fine. You all know I ain’t a worry wart, but if Oden started having actual foot problems, ala Yao or Walton, then I would be worried and would advocate a starvation diet to get him down to 185lbs as quickly as possible to alleviate any further weight on his feet.
Oden looked much better than he looked in the Laker game in his final pre-season games, and all most of us saw was the post-ankle-twist Oden. He isn’t that slow or lumbering, he was just limpin’ around. We also should remember that when we think of how he’ll be when he comes back— expect more like pre-season, less like the Laker game.

Do they still make Pepsi One?
Or have you been stockpiling it for years like I have been doing with my precious Surge?
"For the past two seasons it's been like, 'They're young, they're going to need some time,"' Roy said. "It doesn't feel like that this season."

I drink it too fast to stockpile it
Yeah, they still make it, but never have enough of it… it’s not rare, but grocery stores hardly ever have more than a handfull around.
It’s got as much caffiene as Mountain Dew and is made with Splenda, which prolly still gives me cancer but hasn’t be SHOWN to give you cancer like the other sweeteners. PLUS, my made-up fiancee is allergic to all sweeteners that aren’t Splenda and her throat closes up and she can’t breathe… so, I only get soda with Splenda (called “Sucralose” if you look in the ingredients).
Diet Shasta products use Splenda, as do most energy drinks now.

This is a sick but true story
I <3 Portland but sometimes I hate it.
There is a lil food stand, Mediteranian food by the way called “muhammeds” . The owner, Muhammed, makes the best Gyros EVER. So i go down the stand , and while Im waiting to take order, some dood on a bike rides by, throws an egg at the cart (he missed) and yelled.
“TERRORIST!! OBAMA BIN LADINNNNNNNNNN”
There were 4 of us in line and we all looked at eachother with stricken looks on our faces …
Sad. Im just really sad.

People are very confused.
And in Portland, you get a good mixed bag.
I was in SF recently and found everyone thought too much like me. Not enough rednecks and dim bulbs to even things out.
Pretty sad, really, that this poor confused fellow would attack (if you will) some vendor. It’s the same racist crap that’s dragged us down for hundreds of years.
Hell, who knows what sort of people we’d be without that element shaping our reactions. What I mean is, the shape of the water is dictated by the container. Dig?
Sorry. Trying to make sense of the senseless is a curse.

He threw an egg. Big deal.
I can’t even count the number of chicks that died a premature death becaused I tossed them in the egg phase at some object or person. (One of the best of which was the forward 5" gun mount on an Adams class DDG, wghich was tied up on the opposite side of the tender from us. Sun came up around 5:30 and morning quarters were not until 8:00 The egg cooked on really good and was a real pain for them to scrape off. Submariners 1 , surface pukes 0.)

The only guys we ever ran into who were even somewhat
competent at ASW were the Canadians.
Otherwise we would run through task forces like crap through a goose. One time they had to change our designation to a diesel boat, requiring us to spend a lot of time on the surface simulating a battery charge. Then there was the time a Viking claimed a kill on us and they made us sit out of the exercise, until they found out that the coordinates the Vike had us at would have put us about 50 miles inland of the Spanish coast.
Or the time I burned a hole in the flight deck of a carrier. (At least I’m fairly certain it was me. I was at the forward flare launcher and fired off a green flare, which was what we used to announce we had just launched a simulated torpedo attack. Turns out we were less than a thousand yards in front of the carrier and the flare came down on the flight deck. Being magnesium, it burned into the steel deck. Nailing a carrier with a flare and a destroyer with eggs. Imagine what we would have done with nuclear weapons.)
I should change my sig line to “There are only two types of ships – submarines and targets.”

Conditioning
Why do only big men get questioned about their conditioning? Questions about conditioning have been asked about Oden and Kevin Love this pre-season as well as other big men like Shaq, Yao Eddy Curry, etc. in the past. But I have never heard anyone say that a guard is out of shape. Why? Is it just because a guard that is out of shape will get beaten off the dribble so much that he won’t see the court?

Why do only big men get questioned about their conditioning?
Simple: Only big men get to play when they’re out of shape because of their size. You never see an out of shape guard make it off the bench. Thus there are no questions or discussions about them.

Macadams tomorrow at 5pm
I was wanting to come but I made the assumptiong that this was along the max line, I just got off the phone and was told that Macadams is in SW Portland and about 10-15 min by car from Pioneer Square (the closest max stop) is this true? I’ve yet to ride the bus in portland, and I don’t want to make my first attempt be tomorrow.
I was under the assumption this location was chosen because of its close proximity to the max line and easy jaunt to the garden afterwards? lol guess not?

Now, as far as DYNASTY...
…without Kobe, the Lakers team isn’t THAT good.
Bynum and Gasol are good/great, but Gasol has proven he can’t do it alone and I don’t think Bynum does as well without Kobe being a black hole for defenses to focus on. He could become more of a focal point, but Kobe Bryant is Kobe Bryant.
They could win a title this year and next, but it’s because of Kobe… not their youth.
Bynum is the only STAR who is young, and even he is still long-term unproven. Farmar is hoped to be good, but he’s not someone to build around.
Kobe needs Gasol and Bynum to be a championship contender, but without him they aren’t even close to as good. And Kobe is runnin’ down ever so slowly. He’s still got years left, but there is no youth taking over for him.
Lamar Odom is gone after this season. Is Sasha becoming a star? Farmar? Ariza? They’re just role players.
I’m scared of Kobe, but I ain’t scared of no role players. Bynum will need his Kobe, and Oden and LMA will have their Roy and Rudy and Bayless and whoever else we get. Of course, the next Kobe Bryant could force his way onto the Lakers like the current Kobe Bryant did… the Lakers are lucky jerks that way.

its about a 3-5 year window for them IMO
or as long as Kobe is still elite. Kobe is 30, Odom is 29, Gasol is 28. Fisher is an important player for them, but Farmar is ready to step in when he retires (I figure another year or 2). When Kobe is 35, he’ll still be good but not MVP good, which to me means no title for the Lakers. However, for the next 3 years at least, they will open the season as favorites. Its painful to admit, but its true. They should really win 2 titles in the next 3 years with their talent.
When Kobe retires or his powers are diminished (and this could be 5 years or more off), this is still going to be a good team— a playoff team at minimum. Bynum and Gasol are tremendous. Farmar will be a respectable starting PG and Vujacic and Ariza are excellent role players. However, Kobe is the guy that makes these NBA title favorites/contenders. When he’s past his prime I could easily imagine them falling in the “just good enough not to get good draft picks, just bad enough not to advance deep in the playoffs” no man’s land.
To summarize, I see the current Laker group winning 2-3 titles in the next 5 years. I leave it to everyone else to decide if that would be a dynasty.
I see the Blazers and Lakers having some great games (some in the playoffs) towards the end of this 3-5 year window, but I actually don’t see this as a huge rivalry. If the Blazers become a title team (and I think this depends on a healthy Oden), I don’t think our window will overlap with LA’s by more than a year or two.
Boomshakalaka
by jksnake99 on Oct 31, 2008 1:49 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with that
Without Kobe they have talent, but not talent that will do much in terms of the playoffs.
Not right now, anyways.
As long as Kobe is Kobe, they’ll be good. They COULD win the next 3 titles, and I could also see them fall short to the Celtics again. I wouldn’t be surprised with either outcome.
After Kobe’s done though, they do not currently got youth that will ensure a contending team. Being the Lakers though, and their ability to have great players throw themselves at them, perhaps having Bynum and the Future-Wing-Who-Throws-Himself-At-The-Lakers will be enough.
I figure Gasol is done ’round the same time as Kobe, so it just Bynum and role players.
I think our rivalry will be good and strong for at least two-three years, and if it doesn’t start in this year’s playoffs it’ll surely start next season.
