Sergio Already Upset About Playing Time
Here is a Google translation of a Spanish article that quotes Sergio and Rudy after the opening game. The translation is unclear to me in several places, especially the quotes from Rudy (amlmart1 can you help? Here is the original Spanish page).
Sergio is apparently angry that despite his contract renewal, his playing time in the first game was similar to last year.
"The Spanish base of the Portland Trail Blazers, Sergio Rodriguez, days after it formalized its renewal for the whole of Oregon, has disputed five minutes in the first clash of the season, so he has shown his anger: "We remain in the same, "he said.
Rudy appears to be trying to pump up Sergio's spirits. I hope he isn't complaining about Sergio's playing time. It's not clear to me what else Rudy is saying other than he prefers playing with Sergio, who he thinks has played better than Bayless, and Sergio shouldn't get discouraged (I think) about his playing time. Can you help amlmart1?
"Sergio has been the best in the preseason, but I was surprised by the decision of the coach. "If I'm honest I feel more comfortable playing with him," admitted the newcomer in the NBA today.
"But it is an issue on which not enter or exit, Sergio has to be strong, brave and go forward, has enough quality to do so, it has proven and will not have to come down," he said.
Unfortunately for Sergio, Nate may already be re-thinking using Bayless vs Sergio. From Kerry Eggers article today:
It also became clear that McMillan has more confidence in rookie Jerryd Bayless at the point than Sergio Rodriguez, whom the coach said won the backup position with his performance during the preseason.“We’re probably going to need him,” McMillan said of Bayless. “What I saw in the first half, defensively we needed to get pressure in the game, and we needed some offense. I thought, ‘Let’s try him and see what he can do.’ We were just searching.”
This comes after only one game. It would be reminiscent of Nate changing the starting PG from Jack to Blake after just a couple of games last year.
I'm not really concerned about Sergio's playing time because I've always believed Bayless would get an opportunity (or two) to earn that spot this year. But I hope Rudy doesn't get bent out of shape by Sergio's situation. If Bayless earns the spot, we should probably try to trade Sergio somewhere he can get playing time to keep Rudy happy.
Related note: Bayless has a lot to learn. There was a moment in the LA game when Rudy freed himself for an open 3-point shot and Bayless saw him but didn't make the easy pass. Rudy shook his head in disgust and stared up into the stands.

That was a funny post. I'd like to see more Sergio, but this isn't Sergio's team
The Blazers weren’t going to win the game. Had we been close, Sergio would have played. Because we weren’t Nate wen with the rook. It’s just a way to get Bayless a little burn when things don’t matter much anyway. Sergio’s doing great and Nate knows it. He’ll play again.
Seriously, this isn’t an issue. Or it won’t be in a few games.

You hit the gist of the comments spot on
Rudy essentially said that he was surprised about Sergio’s lack of minutes, that he had played very well in the preseason, and that he’s most comfortable on the court with Sergio as the point guard — but that other than that, he wasn’t gonna touch the discussion (the “no entro ni salgo” part). Sounds to me like Rudy is expressing a very diplomatic preference to play with Sergio more. I fault Rudy not at all in the interview. But Sergio….
I’m sick of Sergio’s whining. Mortimer said it in the gameday thread — when we’re not knocking down jumpers, Sergio’s game becomes a lot less useful. He doesn’t get into the paint and finish and he’s not a particularly good outside shooter, and two nights ago, those were the qualities we needed our second-string PG to be bringing. He needs to shut his mouth, keep improving those aspects of his game, and not pop off in the Spanish media after one game where he was unhappy about his playing time. If he remains only situationally useful, he’ll play situationally. SImple as that.

Yep...seemed like the same old Sergio
I agree with everything BlazersOrBust said. And on top of that, I was kind of surprised to see Sergio playing pretty much the same way he had last year in his five minutes of playing time. It was like he had made no improvement over the Summer, despite reports of all the work put in. Of course, it’s only one game so it’s best not to jump to any conclusions, but it was certainly not a promising start.

how much can he show in 5 minutes?
Of that particular game. It’s not like I saw anything better out of Bayless while he got considerably more time in the 2nd half, playing more against inferior players who had by that time ratcheted their defensive pressure way down.
Sergio earned the spot. At least give him a chance to keep it or lose it by his play.
Rule #1 of nitpicking is to get it right.

While I don't like Sergio talking like this
I think he has a point. Nate’s decision to play him 5 mins was crazy, he earned the spot according to Nate, and then Nate went out and played him as a 3rd pg just like last year. His defense is better this year, his shot is better this year, (he hit a 3pt even though it didn’t count) and his court vision is way better than Bayless. This team wasn’t hitting contested jumpers against the Lakers because no one was moving on offense. Putting Sergio in makes people move on offense, and he does drive the lane, showing this preseason he will finish as well as make the pass out for a easy shot. He is not a perfect player, and needs to still improve, but he is miles ahead of Bayless at this point as a pg, Bayless is a SG in a body that forces him to be a PG, kinda like Juan Dixon.

Although, I do have to admit that I was calling for Bayless in that second half for two reasons: 1) We were getting blown out, 2)We couldn’t throw it in the ocean. I am glad that Sergio is frustrated, he should be. He beat out Bayless fair and square for the 2nd string pg spot and on the VERY 1ST GAME, Bayless logs nearly 3 times as many minutes as Sergio. Nate is doing the same bs he did last season, mission kill Sergio’s confidence. You want a slap in the face, go into your workplace(where you have given 2 hard years) and compete with a guy they just hired for a promotion. Have your boss tell you, “nice work, we are going with you on the promotion”. Then, on your first day at your new position, work for 2 hours only to have your boss tell you to go back to your old job(bench-warming) while the new guy with less experience gets 6 hours on the job that was supposed to be yours. I agree
I noticed a lot more standing around on offense (other than Rudy) when Bayless was in the game. Sergio won the back up position and still wasn’t awarded the confidence from Nate, Sergio averaged 7 assist in the preseason. I think Nate needs to make up his mind and say what he wants from his PG. improved D? Sergio did it, lower turnovers? Bayless has done NO better. Does he want someone who can run the offense? Sergio wins that hands down. I’m not trying to hate on Bayless because his potential is definitely there and he has played well, but Sergio needs the confidence and if Nate said he earned it and he still doesn’t grant it, then it seems like Nate has the issue.

Nicely said.
Nobody’s entitled to anything. If the team was playing well, Nate would’ve stuck with the plan. But in a trainwreck, you have to improvise.
Nate made the right move trying to see what B-Rex could bring to the table. Sucks for Sergio, and obviously he had virtually nothing to do with how badly the Blazers played, but this is the NBA, not a rec league. Self esteem is not the goal.
You put it best – if Sergio’s situationally useful, he’ll play situationally. He’s probably useful in more situations this year, I’ll give him that, but he’s still a situational player.

The game was a fluke
Batum was supposed to start and barely played at all. I trust in Sergio’s game WAY more that Bayless right now, purely for the momentum he has with the second unit (the unit that actually includes Outlaw). My favorite combo of players to watch right now is Rudy and Sergio together because they have more chemistry than most guys on the court. Now keep in mind, I don’t feel that Sergio should be starting over Blake, but really they are both point guards that will pass before they shoot. Bayless on the other hand (as mentioned in the end of the post) will shoot way before he passes. And he is a rookie, and will learn this soon, but no one on our team is selfish. Sometimes we pass the ball way too much and run the shotclock down, which always sucks. I just think that Bayless has a lot to learn before he can run the second unit as strongly as Sergio has. Plus, Sergio has been practicing A LOT this summer and deserves it until he shows that he doesn’t. Just like Martell deserves the starting SF position over Outlaw (darn injury).
When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".
Man I love him.

Still, i agree that sergio should have been playing. Watching both players, Sergio is clearly better. Yeah, our defense stunk, but bayless wasn’t changing that. Give the offense a chance to get rolling with sergio. One intercepted alleyoop and sergio was out of there.

Remember the Atlanta game in Atlanta? Sergio stepped up and helped the team out. He may not look like the best player in the world but Rudy and him need to be on the court together. Bayless' defense is vastly overrated
Yes, he flails around a lot and shows grit and bumps guys, which gives the impression that he plays tight defense—which apparently a lot of people around here like. But in effect there isn’t much difference, guys beat him off the dribble just like they do Sergio and Blake, and he still struggles on the pick-and-roll (like just about every other guard in the NBA). Farmar went right by him, too, whenever he wanted, and wreaked havoc because of it. Watch the game again if you don’t agree.
As far as Sergio getting benched after 5 minutes, I’m trying to see it as Nate giving up on the game in the second half and wanting to get Bayless some minutes in garbage time.
At the same time I think Nate is very short-sighted in chipping away at Sergio’s confidence, that Sergio has been slowly building up after Nate wholesaley destroyed it last year. Having confidence in yourself and from your coach is such a huge part of this game, and Nate seems totally unconcerned with it— to me, that shows that his heart lies with Bayless.

While I'm no fan of Sergio venting so early in the season,
I’m not going to hold it against him, especially when we’ve heard similar comments from Batum and Rudy about the entire game plan getting yanked around.
Really, I think Nate just made a big mistake switching things up here. I’d rather see a prepared team get beat because of a couple rookie mistakes by Batum than watch whaever discombobulated offense we threw out there the other night. Nate just second guessed himself, so hopefully he’ll have learned from this and moved on.
It reminds me of Avery Johnson starting George over Dampier in the playoffs a couple years back. If you’ve spent a lot of time preparing in one way, then don’t switch it up radically at the last minute. I especially feel for Batum, who went from probably starting the game to playing 3 minutes. I’m not saying Batum isn’t a project or that he’s better than TO right now, but the time to make the change was 2 weeks ago, not 2 days before the game. I can’t imagine last minute adjustments like that have a very high level of success, especially on younger teams.

That’s the number one thing Bayless needs to learn. He’s not playing with the scrubs on his high school team in Phoenix any more. Rudy should never, ever, ever be open for a three and not get a pass from whatever PG is in the game. Come on, B-Rex, you’re better than that.

Every minute that Sergio is on the court is one less minute that Rex is playing...
…………………………… At some point, KP has got to get this “profit maximization” theory of player personnel out of his brain and ship that guy. Somewhere, anywhere — for something or nothing. It was a big mistake not getting this done BEFORE Rudy arrived. Now it’s going to be a messy situation.
Rex is the guard of the future. Sergio is not. Play the kid and take the lumps that will come because he is a kid. He’ll learn FAST, the coaching staff will have Rex’s undivided attention… There needs to be a offensive rack crasher on this team; you can’t risk Brandon in that role.
Don’t say he’s too small. Watch the Lakers. Rex = Jordan Farmar. And watch the Spurs — the goal is the game of Tony Parker.
Sergio is a sliver that’s gonna be a big festering, puss-ey mess unless it is removed expeditiously…

I don't agree
Rex is an unproven player with potential, Sergio is a unproven player with potential. Rex played really well in summer league while Sergio played really well his rookie season. This is why I think it was logical to have them battle it out in training camp, which by all reports, (even Nate himself) Sergio won the back up PG spot, and Rex is the 3rd PG on the Blazers. Rex is no more the PG of the future than Sergio is, they are both very talented players who have yet to reach their potential, which ever one does sooner will be staying, if they both do, then they might both stay, but at the moment Sergio is BETTER than Rex. This is not just my opinion, this is Nate’s Published opinion. He is better for this team at this time, Rex might become better for the Blazers, but he is not right now, and there is no guarentee that he ever will.
The problems with Rex as of right now are many, he is not a pure PG, meaning it is not natural for him to set up an offense, get others involved, and create the flow needed to be successful. Right now he is good at getting his own shot, and putting pressure on the opposing PG with his defense, his team defense is very weak, as he consistantly pushes his opponent to the wrong space on the floor, meaning the rest of the team is not in the correct position to defend the possession. To see a perfect example this done right, watch the utube clip of BRoy playing defense on Joe Johnson of the Hawks in ATL, he pushed Joe toward his help, while staying in front of him, he did not need to be up in his grill and really forcing the action like Bayless has been doing. Many coaches call that type of defense, (what Bayless is doing now) “false hustle” he is trying very hard, but it is not helping the team. He needs to listen to his coaches, (something JQuick has reported he is not doing very well at times) and use his head on defense, not just his body.
On offense he has to keep his head up, and know where his teammates are suppose to be within the offense. Putting your head down and driving the lane is not always the best option, as it leaves only two possible results, either you make the shot/get fouled, or you miss a difficult shot. By knowing the offense Bayless will be able to find open shooters while he is on his way toward the hoop, much like Brandon or Sergio does now. This may all come in time, but right now he doesn’t have it, which means he is not much help to the Blazers as a PG, so when he is in he will be playing more of a SG role, but he is too small to defend opposing SG’s. So until he learns the offense to the point that he can be the starting PG along side BRoy he will be the 3rd string PG or an undersides back up SG.
My guess is Sergio will see much more time come Friday, and the rest of the season as long as he plays like he did during the preseason. Every Blazer player/coach/fan was too amped up for the Laker game, so just throw all that out, and starting Friday, the Blazers season begins for real.

My take on this
I read the Batum thread too, The Sergio complaint seems to have come from Rudy replying to a question, whats he supposed to say,Sergio is happy?Nic was also trying to respond honestly to a reporter in a foreign language and whats he supposed to say, both teams played hard?and yeah Nate blew it.

Why do we care so much about a decent point guard who hasn't had a impactful game
in over 18 months? Sergio played poorly in his short stint in the first half. Was he really going to make a difference in the second half? We couldn’t hit jumpers… so Nate sent in Bayless to drive to the hoop and get some trash time. Bayless was nothing special in the game either. It just shouldn’t be a big deal. I encourage the most ardent Sergio fans to worry more about the team instead of just how your one favorite player fares.
Thinking of the team first (honestly, I don’t think I’m biased) it is my hope that Bayless develops and plays instead of Sergio. Bayless is quicker, stronger, bouncier & much more focused/mentally tough. In my minds eye I cannot see Sergio playing with Deron, CP3, Baron Davis, Nash, Billups, Fisher, Parker & etc. I still have hope that Bayless can possibly hold his own.
I’ll put it this way. If Bayless was named the first back-up and then only played 5 minutes… he would be ticked and would come back with more work, more desire and more bayless face intensity. As we’ve seen before Sergio is likely to go into a funk and whine to the spanish press.
