Barrett on Fanfest
Read Mike Barrett's observations on the Fanfest here and then peruse everything else he's been writing about training camp if you haven't already. Great stuff.

LAMA?
can we designate our player as a lama and not get in trouble for it?

these stats are wrong.
i paid most attention to Sergio’s game so i’m most certain about the discrepancies there, but i believe that they are inaccurate throughout. he was 2-5, not 2-6, he had at least 6 assists and he sure as heck didn’t have 5 rebounds, especially not two offensive rebounds (so, no, sergio did not get more than twice the rebounds oden did). bayless didn’t have more than 3 assists, joel didn’t have 3 assists, if any, and so on and so forth.
my point is, take these numbers with a grain of salt.

yup
That stat sheet is terrible. Totally inaccurate. It was still a ton of fun though, I just hope they have a better stat keeper come opening night….

Was the free throw balance roughly accurate?
That “8-8” Martell stat just jumps off the sheet.
And who officiated the shindig?
Does a non-game like this get the benefit of a certified NBA officiating crew?

Oh, and Ben, a question for you --
Caleb Kanales (sp?) was announced as an assistant coach for the white (black?) team at the Fan Fest. Was that just for the evening or has he been promoted from video coordinator? I remember hearing great stuff about him last year.

those stats aren't right
I agree, these stats, just after looking at them for a second, are wrong.
Also, more importantly, Brandon shouldn’t have played. What happened to being cautious? If there is one player on this team you don’t want to burn out or get injured at all before this season… LONG season gets going, its him.
Greg Oden also looked bad. Hopefully it was just an off night.

Jasaon Qick has a good read up on Greg's play at "The Fan Fest"
"You're really making me feel good about myself, little man," says Oden as he starts dancing after scoring a goal. "You better come harder than that."

I like this much better.
Nice to see the whole story. Just looking at the stat line may make one nervous. Nice line for The Smooth Criminal.

Rudy shows up at game time
Earlier this week, I’d heard on ‘Quick Chat’ with Jason Quick and Sean Meagher that Rudy really hadn’t shown much good or bad in training camp.
Watching the 9 minute video over at OregonLive, he looks like in knows how to play when the lights are on, eh?
The man is a phenomenon.

that makes sense
I actually did not expect Rudy to impress in the training camp setting. He has the type of game that isn’t going to pop out in drills and quick scrimmages in practice. Going into training camp I figured we wouldn’t hear much from him in this regard. When the game is live, he comes alive.
This is going to be a FUN team to watch. Look out NBA.

LOL
Tatum outrebounded Oden.
Doesn’t look like Rudy has a problem with the longer 3 point line.
The most amazing thing about my amazing ego is I have amazingly little about which to be egotistical.
The pick and roll this year will emphasize "roll" followed by "dunk", followed by the wailings and lamentations of your women.

Sergio also outrebounded Greg
but according to Quick, Nate praised Oden’s passing.
It’s settled then; make Oden the PG and start Sergio at center.

I knew this wouldn't be a problem for Rudy. He is used to shot the Nba 3 point line in Europe.
By the way I didn’t watch the Oden game ever. This is the first ime I watch his game (Oregonian video 8 minutes). My impression was very bad. There are a lot of players over here (Europe) better than him based on his game showed in the fanfest. I hope he is in bad physical shape. If not he will be the most disappointement player in ages.

Great family event
Had alot of fun at the event. Took the kids and their firends. I hope the food service people figure it out soon; they sure are slow. On the game, Greg looked tired. Rudy looked great. Aldridge was awesome and Roy was Roy. Travis played well and Webster picked it up big time in the second half. I can’t wait for the season to start.
by #7 on Oct 4, 2008 7:29 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Rudy was treating it like the rather fun game that it was, Greg took it a little too serious
That makes all the difference. Both will be ready when it counts.

The thing about Greg
Big Ohio State fan, followed Greg closely his last year in HS and first year in college. Thrilled he ended up in Pdx.
Comments here follow the common threads on the million Oden-related web postings I’ve read.
Here’s what you can expect to see a lot of: “Wow, Greg didn’t impress me that much. He only dominates once in a while. But I was really impressed with [Player X], who is a lot better than I remembered from the last time I saw him play [when Greg wasn’t on the floor].”
by Hawthorne Wingo on Oct 4, 2008 9:21 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Good point to remember.
Greg takes a lot of pressure off other people. I can see LMA having many career nights.

Greg
a few thoughts on greg. First he is obviously still getting his legs back, he was very slow after getting tired, he doesn’t seem to be able to push through that yet. Second, his positioning on defense was very good, he was rarely out of position or caught looking when he should have been moving. Third, it was very obvious to me that his team mates have seen what he can do, and were not going to let him go off on them. Joel basically bear hugged him when he got close the the rim, and the white team double and even triple teamed him every time he caught the ball in the post. After Ike was rejected on the first play no one even went after him any more, even Travis didn’t attack him on the break after Rudy threw that sick around the back no look pass, Outlaw should have gone for the dunk over Oden, but instead he tried to move the ball with is right hand around Oden’s while attempting a weak layup that missed. The respect from his teammates about his ability is obviously there to me. My guess is that other teams will not be so quick to do this to him, he will be tested early in the season, and I see him coming out strong if he sees a diet of one on one defense, and would be dunkers coming at him, like we saw last year in the summer league. Respect is earned in the NBA, not given before you even play a game, so while I was disappointed that the black team didn’t give Oden the ball on the block more, (I only counted maybe 5 total possesions where that happened) I was not too worried about Greg.

Don't worry G_dubs, surely Martin Lurue has been exceeded by Karme Brown and it'll be so hard to exceed Karme.
IMHO Oden will be all star but not so soon as most people have expected including me.
I’ve read so many praises of Odon that if he fails to deliver such expectations, the disappointment is even higher than it would be.

Heh! Maybe Kwame has “exceeded” LaRue! That be cool! LaRue did look cool tho for the day:
http://www.cantstopthebleeding.com/img/larue.jpg
Back to current events, I am not terribly worried that Oden will be a bust. He is simply to much of an atheletic anomaly, and he seems to have the desire. I hope some pressure comes off him with some early wins for the Blazers. I think that would help his confidence. And basketball conditioning is different than just “being in shape”. If you haven’t played it’’s harder maybe to understand, but you use a lot of muscles playing ball, especially the 4’s and the 5’s. I’m giving him time to come back from the surgery.
