Sergio: Adios, critics!
Other forums are talking about Jason Quick's chat (I sadly have not been able to hear it yet, sorry for the lack of confirmation). Quick is reporting that Sergio is considered much improved during this preseason, despite rumors of problems. In fact, he listed Sergio as the best PG on the Blazers besides Brandon Roy.
Kerry Eggers brings this up in the Portland Tribune:
http://portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=122289619931346000
Excerpt: McMillan says, “at the point, we’re going to lean toward Blake first, Sergio and then Jerryd. They’re competing for minutes."
I'm a little surprised at the positive response from coaching, since last I heard, folks were sour (fairly or not) on Sergio. I assumed he'd average 2-4mins per game until getting traded. It sounds instead like he went home to improve his game, his shooting, and came back to try to get more playing time. Good for him if so!
Of course, we can't rule out the possibility that the goal here is to encourage Sergio, while pushing Bayless at the same time. But if true, hopefully Sergio can make a third-year leap.... leaving us with less gameplay minutes to spread around! Wait, this may not be so good.

I just noticed something
you call yourself fatty
The perfect is the enemy of the good.
According to James Kunstler, who writes a well-respected if slightly profane financial blog whose title I cannot repeat here, "The Republicans must be clearly identified as the party that wrecked America... it's hard to imagine the American people giving the clean-up task to the very group that created the mess -- no matter how many cute little faces Sarah Palin can make on TV."

Punctuation is spot-on.
There are two sentences in there, with no punctuation between them,
compensated for with four exclamation points at the end.
And the total lack of capital letters makes for nice verification.
’Tis fatty.

The way I see it
a lot depends on what McMillan is looking for out of a backup guard. Blake is clearly the starter right now. What look does he want when Blake sits? If he wants more scoring punch he’s going to go with Jerryd next, hands down. But if he wants someone to run the team off the bench OR if for some reason Blake can’t play his full minutes and he needs another person to distribute, I think he has to go with Sergio. This is my way of saying, I guess, that the #2 guard position this year may not necessarily be measured by just minutes. Another way to put that is, the minutes given to the second point guard may not just depend on talent.
Either way Sergio is doing exactly what he needs to if he seizes the moment every time he gets a chance.

Seems to me
that Nate really wants to get a feel for Jerryd coming off the bench and playing with that second unit early on, as this is going to be the roll he fills for this season (most likely). It seems like putting Sergio in as a stop gap for an injured Blake has more to do with getting the rookie acclimated to his roll this season than it has to do with Sergio’s improvement. I hope I’m wrong though, I own one current Blazer jersey, and that’s Sergio’s. (I put my Z-bo jersey on the shelf for the whole season last year, but started wearing it again this off-season to show that I’ve been down since we were horrible. lol)

I agree that reading too much into the training camp "promotion"
would probably be a mistake. Right now Sergio is the only candidate for that position, plus he has precedence. He knows the plays and the offense. Putting Bayless in there would say far more about Sergio than putting Sergio in there says about Bayless. Anything that happens right now is inconclusive. It’s not even pre-season yet. However when you’ve been in a dry land even a little dew looks inviting.

A side-note to this whole discussion...
I was surprised to see how easily everyone passed the “backup point guard” role to Jerryd Bayless, without at least seeing how Sergio’s summer work outs affected his game. I realize that last year was an abysmal year for the Spanish point guard, but considering our investment in him, it seems like we’re playing with house money to begin with.
At least early on in the season, it seems logical that the backup guard position is Sergio’s to lose. He’s had two years to learn the offense and the defense (which is more important in Sergio’s case), he’s had a summer worth of work away from the rigors of a National team (which doesn’t focus directly on personal development) and more importantly, he knows the players he’ll be running with.
I’ve always wondered about one thing… Considering our patience with both Martell Webster and Travis Outlaw, and our substantial investment in Jarrett Jack (which can only be considered a success if you equate his value into the promise of Jerryd Bayless), why does Sergio continue to remain on the shelf?
I see three players that were allowed to make mistakes, time and time again, and yet they still received their fair share of minutes (Outlaw – who was a comparable project coming out of HS – saw 13.4 minutes as a 2nd year player and Webster saw even more time at 17.5 minutes per game… Jarrett Jack never played less than 20 minutes per game) but what about “The Surge?”
The fundamental question, I suppose, is: To what extent has Coach McMillan’s trust and love for Jarrett Jack impacted (or prohibited) the development of Sergio?
It is interesting that we have nearly gotten to the point where we arbitrarily throw away 21 year olds as if they are washed up veterans. What a difference a couple of years makes…

Because we don't have time to baby our players
it is our time to to shine now and if you can’t pull your weight, some one else will. When you are rebuilding you don’t have any major expectations and can afford to play Travis a ton of minutes, even when he makes mistakes. We can’t do that now b/c we need the wins to make the playoffs.

agreeed
this was evident at fan fest tonight, sergio was clearly the only point guard on the floor, he easily had 3 times the assists of any other player—and that was with martell missing about 6 open 3s.
in the whole game there were only 4 times where someone started with the ball at the perimeter, made a play and got it to a cutter going to the hoop for an easy two, and all 4 were from sergio. i mean he got diogu an alley-oop and randolph a two-hand jam in a half-court set—that’s pure point-guard right there.

that sergio set up his teammates for a lot of open shots that they did not convert. had they converted them he would have had 3 times more assists compared to other players on the court.

I concur
Bayless had 6 assists, mainly from driving and dishing. Sergio had 3 offically, but Martell’s shot was way off, missing several open looks. Sergio looked good. He’s not going to be traded just to trade him at this point.

Just got back from Fanfest
During the scrimmage Sergio and Bayless were constantly matched up against each other, and I have to see they are about even. Sergio has slightly better vision and found players in better spots for shots, while Bayless get his own shot more, (although he did have an assist!). They both played aggressive defense against each other, and it even got a bit chippy at one point with Sergio giving Bayless a little forarm shiver after Bayless reached in for the ball across Sergio’s body. Sergio’s shot looks much better, although he still didn’t score very much, however he did go 1 for 2 on layups, and the 1 make was very a very pretty drive through traffic.
So for me, I am not suprised by this news after tonight, Sergio may very well be above Bayless on the depth chart when the season starts.

I was at fan fest too
and just had to make one correction. Sergio was in fact 2 for 2 on those layups, both in traffic and around the bigs, one with a nice left hand finish. They were pure shake and bake, get by your man to the rim lay-ups, which were fun to see. He was, however 0-3 on jumpshots, two of which were three pointers, though they all looked decent and rimmed out. Luckily Martell’s shooting was so bad it made no one notice Sergio’s 0-3. I have a bunch of other observation but i’ll put them in the fanpost about fanfest.

good for sergio!!!
I still think sergio has a chance to become a true elite point guard if he has the right scenario. Hopefully more playing time will boost his confidence. I still remember the detroit game last year that he pretty much won for us. B-Rex will have plenty of time to grow and I’m not worried about his attitude / work ethic. Whereas Sergio seems to be at a crossroads with the team. Hopefully we’’ll see a rising phoenix this year ready to light everyone up!

I also just got back from fanfest...
As far as running an offense, its really not that close, Sergio is better. If you want a point guard, you go with Sergio, if you want a scorer, you go with Bayless. I sat extremely close to the floor and I have to say I was a little disappointed with the so called “fierce” attitude of Bayless. To me, he just looked like a prick. He was yelling at guys, scowling at refs, and talking trash to Sergio and others every time he beat him on a play. It just seemed like somebody needed to remind him he is a rook and will be all season. At one point, Rudy got an earful from Bayless(and Rudy was clearly the best player on his team) and turned away while rolling his eyes. Rudy looked over at Dean and Dean sort of shrugged and gave gave him the don’t worry about sort of look. Bayless got benched shortly later and Dean had some words for him. I really think he might need to calm down a notch and try to have a bit more fun. I think he is going to be a good player, but he seems to have an attitude that might conflict with his teammates. Anyway, Sergio looked nice, he had several assists and handled Bayless’s pressure with ease. I still looks like he needs some work on defense, but he did appear to be a better point guard than Bayless on this night….

oooops
After reading that again, it sounded way more negative towards Bayless than I wanted it to. When Jerryd wants to get to the hoop, he does so easily. He is strong around the rim and has incredible hops. His defense is tenacious, I love the in your face attitude he displays on that end of the floor, that factor alone should get him into the rotation. I just wonder if he would be better off taking a step back and trusting some of our more veteran players to do the leading and ear chewing, thats all….

Whenever you’re new, you need to sit back and observe, much like brandon did his first year. You get a feel for the team, the people, the quirks and you learn how to interact with them. How many people have had a boss come in and try to change things without understanding what they’re changing? EVen if it’s good it still upsets people and usually it’s bad anyway because there were REASONS for how things worked.

Bayless and Chemistry
This was my main concern about Bayless. The kid can play, but if he’s focused on “me” instead of “team” then he needs to go. I’m not a fan of players that speak about themselves in the third person. That shows an extremely self centered personality. The fact he’d talk trash to guys he doesn’t even know shows his lack of EQ out there. Those are guys he’s going to spend the next year with night in and night out and he’s damaging his relationship with them.
I want a killer instinct, but Bayless is a rookie and he needs to learn his place. He’s like the know-it-all who doesn’t really know it all.
Jordan developed the balance. Kobe… YEARS later seems to have developed it somewhat. Here’s hoping that Bayless can come around sooner than later else I vote to kick him out before he can damage our team chemistry.
That said, communication is good and people can’t be afraid to speak up and hold eachother accountable, but there’s a right and wrong way to go about doing that.

Tough Calls for Minutes.
Mac split the time at PG between Sergio and Bayless on the 1st Unit. Blake, of course, will start. My take is, however, that the real issue is going to be playing time. We simply don’t have the minutes for 5 guards, particularly if you give Roy and Blake minutes more typical for starters. We see the same thing developing at PF. Diogu has had a few decent reports, but how can you keep three players at one spot? In one sense, I don’t envy Mac. Someone eventually gets left out, even if they can contribute. If Aldridge plays 32 + minutes a game, that only leaves 16 or fewer minutes for Frye or Diogu.
The same situation is setting up at guard. The 4th guard last year was Sergio, and he ended up getting very few minutes. The 5th guard was almost irreelevant. But now, we have 5, and with this group, the 5th is not irrelevant. Someone, either Bayless, Fernandez or Sergio just isn’t going to get to play very much.
by Eben Calder on Oct 4, 2008 9:46 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
You're right, Eben. There can be only three.
Let’s look ahead two or three years and make a few assumptions:
- Sergio develops into a player good enough to be an NBA starter at PG.
- Jerryd shows he has Gil Arenas-level talent and Roy-like leadership skills.
- Rudy continues to improve his already-impressive game.
- Steve is as good or better than he is showing right now.
- Brandon remains the starter at SG.
- There continue to be only 96 minutes per game at the two guard positions.
Which of the current Blazer guards is going to be content with less than 30 minutes per night? Maybe Steve, because he really likes living in Portland, but probably none of them.
I really think Jerryd will have to be traded because he will develop a big-time game and is too much an Alpha male to remain Roy’s sidekick. I could see him being the starter at PG with Rudy coming off the bench to back-up him and Brandon, but I cannot see him and Brandon co-existing as a permanent arrangement when Jerryd becomes a veteran because this team is Brandon’s and I just can’t see Jerryd being okay with that, even if he wants to.
Even if Jerryd leaves, there are only enough minutes to keep three guards happy. That means the Blazers will have to trade away either Sergio or Steve and get a fourth guard who is content with garbage/occasional minutes. That would result in minutes distributed more or less like this: Roy = 36, Rudy = 32, Steve or Sergio = 28.
I would love to keep both Sergio and Steve, but either both of them would play no more than 14-20 minutes or one would get very few minutes. I cannot see that happening. Too bad, because it would be terrific to have both of them if/when Brandon or Rudy go down with an injury.
The best solution, given the above assumptions, would be for Sergio to develop Steve’s maturity, Steve Nash’s game, and Jerryd’s shot, drive, and defense, he becomes the third guard, and we sadly trade Steve to an Eastern contender. If Sergio proves to be, overall, no better than Steve, then we might trade him instead.
I like all our guards, but I don’t see things shaking-out much differently than this.

Sergio will be the one moved...
………………………….. The injury situation will be pivotal — if everyone stays healthy he’ll be moved sooner rather than later.
Bayless and Roy will eventually be the basic backcourt tandem and Rudy Rudy Rudy the 6th man supreme… Blake will eventually be relegated to backup minutes, which may or may not be a big problem for him.
I look for this to shape up this season rather than next, definitely in the 2nd half of the year rather than right away…

I am going to have to see it to believe it.
It’s not uncommon for players to have good training camps or pre-seasons. The players are under far less pressure and some are recieving a lot more minutes than they would in a regular season game.
I am not going to believe Sergio has improved until I can see him become an impact player off the bench. Come in and make good decisions right off the bat and hold his own on defense so he can stay in the game.
While It would be nice to see sergio have a chance at the back-up guard, I still feel strongly that bayless is going to get jack’s minutes (at least) and sergio will spend most of his time riding the pine.

Also
We may find that some of the pressure for minutes may be adjusted if Mac’s comments on putting Fernandez in at SG and Roy at SF in some sets takes place. It was an interesting comment.
Certainly, with the front line we have, I can see some “small ball” making sense against some teams. If it works, we might keep 4 of these guards, but only 1 of the SF’s – in that as with the guards, you’re not going to keep Webster or Travis as an insurance player on the third team.
Mac’s got some tough decisions in front of him. As do the Blazers. But they must have known all of this going in. They knew they were going to bring Fernandez over, and they were lazered in on drafting Bayless. The moment they decided on Fernandez Jack’s minutes had to go down, and the moment they decided on Bayless Sergio also had to be affected. They did not, after all, have to draft Bayless – but they did. If they’d had confidence in Sergio to play the backup PG role (and eventually to start with Roy) , there would have been no need for Bayless.
The Blazers must have talked this over thoroughly, which caused them to decide to use Jack and the lottery pick to replace Sergio. In one sense, I always felt that no matter what Sergio did, the decision had, for all practical purposes, already been made.
After all, the only way to develop these three players is to let them play minutes. And somehow, I don’t think the Blazers made the investment in Bayless to let him set on the bench and not develop.
Sergio controlled his future last year. But his play undermined his future this year, and caused the Blazers to make the moves they did. Now, it’ll be very tough for him to make up for that lost year.

Yes, but
then KP traded “up” to 11 to get Bayless, who will ultimately be a PG. If KP had been content to select the “BPA” he would’ve stayed at 13th draft position
I would say the reports of Sergio’s play during the first week of camp have been mixed. You had the glowing report from Jason on the Quick chat, but also the earlier news that Nate had yelled at Rodriguez for being out of position on defensive rotations. I’m not surprised that Sergio is “ahead” of Bayless at this point of their careers, after all, Rodriguez has been in Nate’s “system” longer. What I expect to happen is for Jerryd to catch and pass Sergio in the “backstretch” of preseason, as JB gains more experience.
Another observation from FanFest that I absolutely loved. Bayless was hounding the opposing PG (either Sergio or Tatum) with butt-down, move the feet laterally, in your jock defense. That’s something I haven’t seen from a Blazer’s PG since the days of Robert Pack. I’m sure Nate has noticed this as well, and it will be hard to keep Jerryd on the bench when Portland faces teams with quicker PGs
