Why we care about sports, the blazers ( and Greg Oden ).
So I wrote the first version of this post in haste as a retort to a troll on this blog who will remain nameless who has been spreading poison and trying to infect this site with doubt and negativity. A few people wisely recommended I delete it so as not to gratify the troll who will remain nameless or perpetuate his poison. So I thought I'd write a little something about about why we care when people spread negativity about our team.
Why do we care about the Blazers, Greg Oden, and Greg's health? We care because we have a sinking economy, a healthcare and social security crisis, an endless war, uncertainty about the future in an election year, and endless other problems weighing heavily on our mind. We care about our team because in the end it doesn't matter. Whether the blazers make the playoffs or not doesn't affect my 401K, my mortgage, or my family. It's safe to care about sports and the blazers. It's safe to care because failure isn't that bad. Not as bad as losing your house, having thousands of dollars in medical bills, or worse. Because it's safe to care, I think it makes us care more. We care when they win, lose, fall, rise, and everything in between.
We care when people dismiss a player as a bust before he has had a chance to prove himself. We care when people say we are stupid for believing in the Blazers and Greg Oden. We care BECAUSE we believe. We have to believe. They are our team. Rip city.

Good night everyone...
it was nice having a panic attack with everyone :)
The Faith don't panic, the faith freaks out burns out farms and torchs small villages in the name of The Faith.

A watched pot never boils.
Some people should be more patient.
Sergio + Rudy = 16
Sergio + Bayless = 16
Batum 8+8=16
We care because
there is safety in numbers. My opinion (might be wrong, of course) is that we care about our sports teams because doing so serves as a modern-day replacement for the natural proclivity of humans to huddle together to protect themselves from the other tribe. A fairly harmless psychological transfer mechanism. It’s also an ego projection sort of thing. Obviously, if we identify with a team and they win, we “win” and get success and the attendant ego strokes vicariously.
In general, the art of government consists in taking as much money as possible from one party of the citizens to give to the other.
Excellent Post
I thankfully missed out on the trolling yesterday, so I’m not sure what exactly went down..but I asked myself why I was pacing back and forth, why i was unable to concentrate at work and why i was so stressed about the Blazers performance and Greg’s MRI results. It’s because the Blazers are my team, my outlet and I care about them and their players. I’ve been a fan since age 4…so I have a vested interest in circling the wagons when Johnny Come Latelys come around with an attitude.
I think some people express very negative opinions because they want attention, not necessarily because they care…and it seems like it works in some cases.

Amen
I couldn’t agree more… there’s not enough time for hate (not any point to it) when we’re all Blazer fans.
I care therefore I am.
