Breaking News: Semi-Official (Now Completely Official) Word on Oden

Foot sprain.  2-4 weeks recovery.

This is from one of our sources.  Obviously every "inside" piece of info will be looked at with some suspicion until the official news breaks but I can tell you that this source is nearly as impeccable as they come and hasn't been wrong in my experience, which is why I'm posting this.

My initial reaction:  all this means is that Greg will miss the brutal part of the schedule where we wouldn't have won much anyway.

--Dave

Update: This has been confirmed by John Canzano on 95.5.

Update #2--Official Word from the Blazers

MRI AND CAT SCAN CONFIRMS ODEN FOOT SPRAIN

PORTLAND, Ore. - A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) Scan today confirmed Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden has a mid-lateral right foot sprain.

The MRI revealed a couple of avulsions that are not believed serious and do not require surgery.

Oden is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.

The injury occurred during the first quarter of Portland's Tuesday night game at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Nope, can't do that

But I can tell you:

1. I never post stuff to get ratings or to play games. You’ve not seen me do this much. That should mean something.

2. I’ve not known this source to be wrong.

Which is to say

I would not have posted it unless I was all but sure this is what’s going to come out. Of course there’s always a .01 chance of something being different or some wires getting crossed, but the chance really is that low. I figured having the info in your hands was of greater benefit than the risk that it was wrong…and I am quite conservative in making these judgments usually.

That is what I care about

I want this to be a site where if you read it, you know it’s true. I value that far more than “breaking” stories. Being first doesn’t mean as much when it’s all over the world five minutes later. Being accurate counts in this day and age.

That said, sometimes we are fortunate enough to be able to get the story first as well, which is fine. I just find it more important for you guys to be able to say, “I trust this” than to say, “Guess what I heard?!?!?”

2-4 weeks?

When asked about his thoughts during the Olympic games about playing against Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Rudy responded "My first thought was respect. My second thought was to kick their ass".

hey

you cant be mad thats what I hear here. People start to get iritated and will tell you to shut up. Well thats what I got when I was critical of Blazers saying that Oden is fine when he is not

He rolled his foot

If you play basketball that is going to happen sometime

by tingeyga on Oct 29, 2008 5:44 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i played ball all the way to JC. seen and had alot of rolled ankles.

but no rolled foots.

when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.

by Net Ranger on Oct 29, 2008 5:45 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

yep - i played 2 years in college

and also haven’t seen this much injury to one person before

by hotstuffdb22 on Oct 29, 2008 5:46 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Your career was charmed then

A rolled ankle/foot happens every week in the NBA.

Just unfortunate/unlucky it happened to super hyped big man Greg Oden, who also happens to be coming off a bad knee injury.

by Mortimer on Oct 29, 2008 6:01 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Lets take away injury prone

and simply say this hurts his progress……..He is out of shape and not game shape at all….this makes big men (or anyone, but more so to big men [a simple law of physics] )get injuries that they may not get if in top condition…mind you I say may not get…..he is on a roller coaster, so to speak, in that he needs to play to get in game shape and he is not playing…when he comes back, he will not be in good shape and will be at more of a risk of getting hurt……
But then, when he gets hurt again, you have to re-apply injury prone and it will be that way until proven otherwise……this is sad, sour grapes, or whatever you choose to call it….but it is the truth….and the players know this, so they are planning on playing without him….they have already played a year without him…so they must move on with that in mind…..

by 67 on Oct 29, 2008 6:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Stop Babying him

You know, I feel like we have been so overprotective of Oden and him getting injured. I think he should come back asap from this injury. He should play 10 min in the first possible game. You can push ankles, unlike other injuries (microfracture surgery) where you need to take a lot of time. Give him one week and then see what he can do. He will get hurt again. He needs to start playing through stuff, and get used to not thinking about being injured. Rather than thinking about protecting him, we need to be thinking about unleashing him. Ever since he had MF surgery, it has always been “keep him in bubble wrap and take him out for the game!” Seriously, he will be fine.

by UGotThrilled on Oct 29, 2008 9:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I am actually really proud of him

for playing after rolling his ankle so badly. That is the exact attitude he needs if he is going to be effective

by UGotThrilled on Oct 29, 2008 9:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I dunno

There was someone who seemed very familiar with this type injury posting earlier. He said these “avulsions” usually heal just fine without surgery—unless you don’t allow them sufficient healing time.

by hotstuffdb22 on Oct 29, 2008 5:26 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Good? Bad? Depends on expectations

If you thought he’d be playing tomorrow, it’s bad news. If you thought the he might miss half the season or more, it would be good news… We might want to consider our entire distribution of beliefs, but that’s way too much info.

by PoliSam on Oct 29, 2008 5:46 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know about all of you.

But I am ECSTATIC that he is only out 2-4 weeks.

WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Not bad, not bad at all!

We’re gonna suck these first two weeks anyways, and then Oden can come back early from the injury and look strong and mighty.

only bad thing is that he has to think about being injured some more

and I already priced that into my emotional stock market.

by PoliSam on Oct 29, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree with Morty

ASSUMING THAT THIS IS NOT A WARNING SIGN OF MORE INJURIES TO COME-

This could be a blessing in disguise for the following reasons:

A) This forces the rest of the team to step up their game and realize they can’t and shouldn’t rely on Oden to win games for them.

B) This potentially moves the media spot light off of Oden as he won’t be on prime time banging with the leagues best big men.

C) Relieves the pressure off Oden as he is declared a bust and the national media move one.

D) Allows Oden to come back and dominate versus lesser big men as he plays his way back into shape allowing him to ease into the league instead of the hideous trial by fire that had been planned for him.

Now mind you I don’t see this as a great thing but I see some silver linings here.

k....

I’m gonna scream PAIN KILLERS!!!! shots?

does anyone have a good opinion on this?

If he played on it, can he hurt himself more?

by faith on Oct 29, 2008 5:27 PM PDT   0 recs

Depending on the injury

Sure, he could hurt himself more.

by Mortimer on Oct 29, 2008 5:28 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't want him hurt,

but could he just have a real low threshold for pain? I know people that have really high ones, and alot of people who don’t.

I don’t mean anything ill by it, cuz that one picture in the game summary of how ugly it looked all bent and what not, but….if it’s a minor sprain….2-4 weeks?… I’m not talking like 20-30 min, but just enough to keep him active 5-10 min max..and so he don’t get too ……bummed.. :)

The faith (and I'm a guy) perverts. :)

A response

…G.O. played in the NCAA with a broken hand (wrist?) and shot with his off-hand. I’d say that indicates a pretty good tolerance for pain. I understand the frustration. I’ve played (soccer) hurt (torn achilles) and it doesn’t do anyone any good.

No worries

I’ve known you for a while on B.E. and you’ve always come across as a level-headed dude. This just (unfortunately) cuts a little close to the bone history-wise.

Look on the bright side, at least Greg didn’t injure his huevos like Joel did last year.

by DonkeyShins on Oct 29, 2008 5:59 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Good News?

I completely disagree. Good news would have been having him back in the starting lineup on Friday. You guys are all dillusional. We still have an injury prone big guy.

by GoBlazersWIN on Oct 29, 2008 5:28 PM PDT   0 recs

Or...

…a dude who stepped on a foot and twisted the ankle.

There is a difference.

Look— Oden got hurt in a real normal way for a b-baller to get hurt. Because it is Oden and we all worry I am glad it isn’t too bad.

by Mortimer on Oct 29, 2008 5:29 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

OR

this guy’s been injured his WHOLE NBA Career.

by hotstuffdb22 on Oct 29, 2008 5:30 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

So was Roy

His rookie year.

That was a wierd injury too that couldn’t be helped.

If Oden’s knee goes out AGAIN or his wrist, then we worry.

If he steps on a foot he needs to get his ankles stronger, but it’s a NORMAL injury— not a brittleness injury.

by Mortimer on Oct 29, 2008 5:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

If you play a lot of basketball you are almost certainly

at some point going to get hurt like Oden did. It isn’t like he messed up his foot riding a moped.

by tingeyga on Oct 29, 2008 5:47 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Worrying point is that hasn't all of his recent injuries been on that right side?

not counting the sprained ankle as an injury?

by Net Ranger on Oct 29, 2008 5:54 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Knee+Foot=2

Forgot about the wrist, but that happened 2+ years ago so I don’t think that it really qualifies as recent. But if you figure that you are equally likely to roll your left foot as you are your right, then there really isn’t much to worry about.

by tingeyga on Oct 29, 2008 6:07 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Yup

I came down for a rebound once in a pickup game in grad school and almost rolled my ankle. I managed to prevent that, but in the process, managed to sever my ACL.

Granted, I’m not an NBA player, but I’m also not 285 pounds and my legs are stronger than my upper body.

by DonkeyShins on Oct 29, 2008 5:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

It was terrible news when he got hurt

It’s good new that he’s only out 2-4 weeks.

Maybe next season the NBA

will think twice when they line up all the top centers in the league for us to play in a row to start the season.

Put it in perspective.

If this were Aldridge, Outlaw, Bayless, etc., then this would be considered minor.

Hey you!

Yeah you…stop posting like such a downer, are you a L*ker fan or something?

unrealistic fans: LOOK AT THE FACT SHEET – THIS DUDE HAS INJURY SPELLED ON HIS NAME since HE ENTERED THE LEAGUE…. once this changes, then I’ll change my perspective… but you and others are choosing to ignore this FACT

Ignoring what exactly?

We obviously are bummed he is injured but relieved that it was better case scenerio. People like you just don’t make any sense to me.

I tend to think that italics are a much more polite way to emphasize a statement, than caps.

Although, I am not sure the effectiveness of either method when they are used so… well, in such abundance.

It’s like the misguided student highlighting the entire page; emphasis is totally negated when it is overused.
