Breaking News: Semi-Official (Now Completely Official) Word on Oden
Foot sprain. 2-4 weeks recovery.
This is from one of our sources. Obviously every "inside" piece of info will be looked at with some suspicion until the official news breaks but I can tell you that this source is nearly as impeccable as they come and hasn't been wrong in my experience, which is why I'm posting this.
My initial reaction: all this means is that Greg will miss the brutal part of the schedule where we wouldn't have won much anyway.

Update: This has been confirmed by John Canzano on 95.5.
Update #2--Official Word from the Blazers
MRI AND CAT SCAN CONFIRMS ODEN FOOT SPRAIN
PORTLAND, Ore. - A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) Scan today confirmed Portland Trail Blazers center Greg Oden has a mid-lateral right foot sprain.
The MRI revealed a couple of avulsions that are not believed serious and do not require surgery.
Oden is expected to be out 2-4 weeks.
The injury occurred during the first quarter of Portland's Tuesday night game at the Los Angeles Lakers.

Nope, can't do that
But I can tell you:
1. I never post stuff to get ratings or to play games. You’ve not seen me do this much. That should mean something.
2. I’ve not known this source to be wrong.

Which is to say
I would not have posted it unless I was all but sure this is what’s going to come out. Of course there’s always a .01 chance of something being different or some wires getting crossed, but the chance really is that low. I figured having the info in your hands was of greater benefit than the risk that it was wrong…and I am quite conservative in making these judgments usually.

That is what I care about
I want this to be a site where if you read it, you know it’s true. I value that far more than “breaking” stories. Being first doesn’t mean as much when it’s all over the world five minutes later. Being accurate counts in this day and age.
That said, sometimes we are fortunate enough to be able to get the story first as well, which is fine. I just find it more important for you guys to be able to say, “I trust this” than to say, “Guess what I heard?!?!?”

Your career was charmed then
A rolled ankle/foot happens every week in the NBA.
Just unfortunate/unlucky it happened to super hyped big man Greg Oden, who also happens to be coming off a bad knee injury.
by Mortimer on Oct 29, 2008 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lets take away injury prone
and simply say this hurts his progress……..He is out of shape and not game shape at all….this makes big men (or anyone, but more so to big men [a simple law of physics] )get injuries that they may not get if in top condition…mind you I say may not get…..he is on a roller coaster, so to speak, in that he needs to play to get in game shape and he is not playing…when he comes back, he will not be in good shape and will be at more of a risk of getting hurt……
But then, when he gets hurt again, you have to re-apply injury prone and it will be that way until proven otherwise……this is sad, sour grapes, or whatever you choose to call it….but it is the truth….and the players know this, so they are planning on playing without him….they have already played a year without him…so they must move on with that in mind…..

Stop Babying him
You know, I feel like we have been so overprotective of Oden and him getting injured. I think he should come back asap from this injury. He should play 10 min in the first possible game. You can push ankles, unlike other injuries (microfracture surgery) where you need to take a lot of time. Give him one week and then see what he can do. He will get hurt again. He needs to start playing through stuff, and get used to not thinking about being injured. Rather than thinking about protecting him, we need to be thinking about unleashing him. Ever since he had MF surgery, it has always been “keep him in bubble wrap and take him out for the game!” Seriously, he will be fine.

I dunno
There was someone who seemed very familiar with this type injury posting earlier. He said these “avulsions” usually heal just fine without surgery—unless you don’t allow them sufficient healing time.

I agree with Morty
ASSUMING THAT THIS IS NOT A WARNING SIGN OF MORE INJURIES TO COME-
This could be a blessing in disguise for the following reasons:
A) This forces the rest of the team to step up their game and realize they can’t and shouldn’t rely on Oden to win games for them.
B) This potentially moves the media spot light off of Oden as he won’t be on prime time banging with the leagues best big men.
C) Relieves the pressure off Oden as he is declared a bust and the national media move one.
D) Allows Oden to come back and dominate versus lesser big men as he plays his way back into shape allowing him to ease into the league instead of the hideous trial by fire that had been planned for him.
Now mind you I don’t see this as a great thing but I see some silver linings here.

Knee+Foot=2
Forgot about the wrist, but that happened 2+ years ago so I don’t think that it really qualifies as recent. But if you figure that you are equally likely to roll your left foot as you are your right, then there really isn’t much to worry about.

let's not forget what happened to bill walton
who was definitely considered “injury-prone” and a bust after two years as a blazer in which he never played more than half a season — then his first full year he pushed the team to its only championship. the next year they started 50-10, he hurt his foot, felt pressured to come back in the playoffs and “play with pain” and he was never the same.
ever. he could never jump and was never light on his feet again. and he (perhaps rightly) blamed the blazers for pushing him to come back before he should have. kp knows this history. everyone here should too.

somebody who’s gotta degree wanna decipher that grey block in the main post? Please?
The faith (and I'm a guy) perverts. :)
by faith on Oct 29, 2008 6:07 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Avulsion
An avulsion fracture is when a small piece of the bone where a tendon or ligament is attached gets pulled off. Basically, there’s some serious force placed on that attachment point usually from a twisting that pulls the tendon/ligament farther than it’s supposed to or can go. Something has to give, and it can be a small piece of the bone at that attachment point. In the mid-foot, it’s often the bone because there are numerous thick layers of tendon and ligament webbing them together.
I had an avulsion of my medial ankle due to a pronation sprain. (I was playing ultimate frisbee and landed wrong, rolled my foot “in” instead of the more usual “outward” roll. Very very painful.) The x-rays showed a small sliver of bone that had become detached, but the deltoid ligament was intact, which was the important part. In my x-ray, it looked like a small fingernail clipping.
In the foot, you don’t have to worry too much about the bones moving around, because there’s not much room to move around and because there are so many structural elements in there to keep things in place. Because of that, unless there are really severe fractures, immobilizing and resting the foot will allow the bones to knit back where they should be. There’s no structural damage to the bones right now, because it’s just a thin layer of the bone that gets pulled off. In fact, the bone knitting process can actually make the affected area stronger.
It sounds bad, but it’s actually a fairly common injury with a straightforward treatment and very good recovery results. This is not something to be significantly worried about right now. That being said, if he’s rushed back, it could become chronic. (Personally, I’m very confident that the Blazers will be very, very careful with his return.)

This blog is jumpin’ around like a jeep full o’ jack rabbits in an earthquake. I was trying to flag hotstuffdb22 as a troll, but the actions button didn’t work. Jeepers, but all the trolls seem to have come out from under some rock at once. Pretty disgusting.
Okay, so Greg is out for a while. On a personal note I am REALLY disappointed because I was psyched up to see his debut in person this Friday. So I guess I’ll miss that little bit of history. But, anyhow, I’m thankful that he’ll be back before too long.
The Blazers are better than they showed last night. Yeah, those other guys are pretty good, but I think they’ll have some serious respect for the Blazers before the season is through. And I’m still planning for a victory celebration on Friday.

You're another guy pushing the envelope
It seems that most of the people who really know basketball — and frankly, I’m NOT one of them — don’t disagree about Greg’s ability to dominate a game at both ends of the floor. There’s simply no question of Greg being Joel’s backup. I believe that comments like yours are just intended to stir things up. You are trolling.

To the contrary.
Having played JC ball. I do know a thing or two about basketball. Ability is not the end all, be all that makes a good player. Consistency and reliability also go into the equation. Greg has shown none of those. And the lack of those two variables can disrupt a starting lineup. I know. I’ve felt it firsthand.
With that said. I love Greg Oden and his potential. But aside from the hype, he’s just not ready to be an NBA starting center just yet.

I do agree with you to some extent
Might as well let him take it slow so he doesn’t get overwhelmed out there. Let him work his way into game shape from the bench against backup centers to build his confidence. We’re not gonna win a championship this year.
That being said I wouldn’t keep him behind Joel for more than 2 weeks. That should be plenty of time to at least near game shape.

Hmm
Well I notice that you didn’t just join BE since last night, so I’ll cut you some slack. However, think about how it seems to people: Oden is injured, everyone is bummed because of that and the blowout loss to those other guys, and you go on suggesting in so many words that Oden isn’t really good enough anyway. IMO, besides being wrong, you are saying things guaranteed to annoy or anger many of the rest of us.

You are absolutely correct. In as many words, i have announced that Greg Oden
is not a world beater. There you have it. Tons of potential and that’s all that it is until he can finish a game or two.
Listen to my argument for having Greg coming off of the bench for at least the short term:
a) it stabilizes the starting lineup until Greg can prove he can stay healthy.
b) allows him to work his way back into game shape
c) KP says most of greg’s pressure comes within – does coming off of the bench help him relieve some of that?
amiright?
when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.
by Net Ranger on Oct 29, 2008 6:55 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You are just assuming that Oden will continue to be injured
If Brandon comes back from an injury, or LMA does, do they work their way back into the starting lineup by first coming off the bench for a while? No, as soon as they can play, they’re back to starting. If you watched the preseason games, it was pretty obvious how Oden radically changed the game whenever he was in there. He’s a game-changer. Joel is a great center to have as a backup, but he has such a limited offensive presence. The Blazers will be a better team with Greg Oden in the middle.
Greg knows he is going to be a starter. you can’t be drafted #1 overall and not start. And he knows there are expectations. Those come with the territory. He just needs to play for a while and settle down. He will be fine.
Palin drone: a statement that is equally nonsensical whether uttered or written forward or backward.
by CatMan2 on Oct 29, 2008 7:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Points well taken.
But yes. I would expect that if Roy or LA came back from injuries not in game shape, i would assume they’d come off of the bench for their 1st few games. Perhaps you are assuming GO comes back in game shape. I suppose that’s where you and i differ.
I totally agree with you that Joel has a limited offensive presence. But i must also believe that 1 year later – Blake, Roy, and Aldridge are improved players this year, no?
That alone should make the starting lineup better than last year.
“You can’t be drafted #1 overall and not start” – CatMan2. And therein lies the the discrepancy between you and i. Idealism vs. Realism :(
when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.
by Net Ranger on Oct 29, 2008 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
You can absolutely be drafted #1 and not start
Kwame Brown, Michael Olowkandi, but lets hope it never gets there.
CatMan2, don’t forget Aldridge was #2 and didn’t start his first year. He’s doing just fine. I’m sure he enjoyed the time coming off the bench while he got comfortable with his shoulder.
Of course, we weren’t gonna bench Z-Bo no matter what. But the point is, coming off the bench to enter the league won’t ruin your career. Give the big man time to get used to the game & maybe build his confidence against some backups.
I’m not saying coming off the bench is the only option, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.

JC Ball is great
Hey, you know Ruben Patterson? He’s in the NBA and I wouldn’t be surprised to find out he is mentally retarded.
Playing HS, JC, Duke, NBA doesn’t make one an expert and is a silly thing to hang over an argument as if it clinches it.
Greg Oden, even out of shape, is a lot better than Joel Przybilla. I love Joel Przybilla, and he has experience and great rebounding. He’s a tough defender who can’t cover a lot of ground. He has the worst hands of any of our starting centers in recent memory. He disrupts our offense so much that both of our stars are constantly double teamed because there is no reason to guard Joel— even with an open dunk, it’s not unlikely that he’ll biff it.
In the pre-season game against the Clippers, I saw Oden do things and affect the game so much that it would be the crowning achievement of Joel Przybilla’s season. And Oden is an extremely raw (for him) 20 year old rookie who is out of shape.
I’m sorry, you do not start a good backup over GREG ODEN just because you know Joel will give you 4 points and 8 boards, when Oden can average a double double in the same minutes.
I do not want to make fun of Joel, but he is nowhere close to as good as Oden will be and I do not think his positives outweigh Oden’s positives right NOW— and when you factor in the future, it’s not even close.
JC Ball is good, I’m sure you learned a lot, but no level of basketball makes one such an expert that it precludes any disagreement with that person. It’s a very lame trump card.

I think the best thing to do as a Blazer fan is watch the team as if there was never a Greg Oden. Then
in 2-3 weeks when he is back we can say, “Oh cool, a great team now we’re upgrading at the center position.” Hopefully the hype will have died down and we play a scrub team on the road on basic cable. He needs some low key games to build confidence.

holy crap, in layman's terms...
An avulsion fracture is a bone fracture which occurs when a fragment of bone tears away from the main mass of bone as a result of physical trauma. This can occur at the ligament due to the application forces external to the body (such as a fall or pull) or at the tendon due to a muscular contraction that is stronger than the forces holding the bone together. Generally muscular avulsion is prevented due to the neurological limitations placed on muscle contractions. Highly trained athletes can overcome this neurological inhibition of strength and produce a much greater force output capable of breaking or avulsing a bone.
If the fracture is small, it is usually sufficient to treat with rest and support bandage, but in more severe cases surgery may be required. Ice may be used to relieve
