Disappointed, no doubt.

I predicted a loss, but not like that.

Our offense was atrocious, and their defense in the first half was outstanding. They smothered Roy, Aldridge, and Oden at every touch.

We’ll do better, undoubtedly. GO will be fine. We’re still going to the playoffs. Hopefully, the rest of the league will now think we’re phonies and won’t see us coming.

Shockingly calm here.

Although it was incredibly frustrating to watch our guys miss open shot after open shot, I can only feel that this team, after a very poor effort against a very, very good team, has nowhere to go but up. Friday will be much prettier.

As for Oden, I wasn’t disappointed with his 13 minutes (although a free throw would have been nice, Greg). As for the injury? I sort of feel a detached numbness toward the whole situation. If he truly is hurt, we will make the best of it and I will still love to see the team play. If he’s ok, great and let’s get after it.

A loss is a loss, whether we lose by 20 in a blowout or 1 on a last-minute play.

"For the past two seasons it's been like, 'They're young, they're going to need some time,"' Roy said. "It doesn't feel like that this season."

worried

but only over the Oden foot situation. Otherwise, pretty calm. I expected some pretty bad early losses, given youth, the number of rookies, and the brutal fall schedule. (Though this pragmatism didn’t stop me from being a Jersey Contest Homer and making probably 0 points.) The team is going to take some time to come together, much like last season’s unevenness before their stellar December run. That being said, if Oden misses significant time, it will considerably delay their growth. The absence of Webster is clearly causing some matchup and lineup problems, and he’s not one of the Big Three. We need those three playing together on the court against real competition as much as possible, especially the big new guy.

WOW.. Settle down everyone

Aren’t we even younger than last years team? Were we the youngest team in NBA history or something close to that last year? This team is going to take time to develop, and you all need to lower your standards for this year. Expecting too much is going to end up letting you down. Let them grow together. At one point last night, we had 3 rookies on the floor at the same time. We had 4 players last night that got their first NBA experience and it came on National TV. It so happened to be against the defending NBA Western Conference Champs. Lets put it into perspective here and stop acting ridiculous.. Thanks.

Not sure who you're talking to here as your comment is the most riled up one that i've read so far.

I’m disappointed. This team could have done better, and should have. It’s not hte loss, it’s the lack of spacing, passing, execution, awareness, and watching Oden lumbering around, although it sounds like a large part of that was his injury.

We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

Thank you Stegie

I agree with you. Last night did suck in many ways, but It’s only going to get better. Last night was this team’s first real chance to play together. The team’s health, experience, youthful exuberance and DOMINATION WILL COME. Be patient and enjoy the ride.

I chose "Worried"

I went between that and Disappointed.

I’m really worried about Oden, not only for the team, but also because he seems like such a good guy who doesn’t deserve this.

I’m also worried about their play last night. Not the game itself; bad losses happen to good teams. But more about the fact that they didn’t seem to have any real offense in place and had a terrible time getting good shots up. Plus their defense seemed to degrade further. I’m hoping that was a case of nerves, but it’s worrisome.

by Timmay! on Oct 29, 2008 10:40 AM PDT reply actions

All of the above

I picked dissapointed because I was. I thought we would probably lose, I just didnt think we would play so terribly. It was tough to watch. Our “big 3” got smoked. Rudy was great as usual. Outlaw was good too but everyone last night was obviously outmatched to say the least. I am still confident in my team though so I almost picked that. Last nights game was a classic case of nerves and pressure for the blazers. It was 1 game outta 82. My prediction is we will make the playoffs, but this is going to be a hard hard month. But it is all up hill from here. I will be much more happy and calm when they release more info on Oden and tell us hes fine and will play on Friday. 81 and 1 is every true fans dream, but dreams arent reality, playoffs first, then 82-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think the Lakers

are getting way too much credit, defensively. Even Zen Master Phil was somewhat dismissive of the notion that the Lakers D had been largely responsible for the Blazers’ offensive futility. He lamented the fact that Portland had been able to get a lot of good looks that “just didn’t fall.”

I actually think a much better explanation for some of Portland’s offensive ineptitude could be found in Adande’s piece today.

LaMarcus Aldridge said Oden looked “unsure … scared … I don’t think he was really scared, but everyone was passive. I can say for myself I think my whole mentality was to play off Greg, which is a different mentality I possessed from last year, so I felt like I was playing passive, as well.”

Brandon Roy had similar thoughts, that Oden’s presence caused everyone to relax and let the big fella handle it, only to find that the Lakers were handling them. It was a strong defensive effort by the Lakers, who packed the lane with help defenders, forcing two Portland shot-clock violations.

In short, the party most responsible for the Blazers pisspoor showing was not the Lakers, not the refs but…. the Blazers! So, please, might we have a little less fawning over the Lakers’ suffocating D here? OK? If you lived in LA (as I unfortunately now do) you’d have been spent the past few weeks barraged with 24-hour NBA championship blather only to see it now mestastasize following last night’s game. I come here to get some badly needed relief from all of that nonsense.

I think you should give credit to the defense

Lakers had Bynum in the middle swatting shots. They were able to play aggressive on the perimeter and close out on jumpshooters. The Lakers defense was very good in the half court. They had trouble with transition D just like the Blazers though. Of course the Blazers offense wasn’t exactly helping.

by DonkeyShins on Oct 29, 2008 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Sure the Blazers missed a lot of shots they normally make

but you simply cannot say the Lakers did not play great D. Funny how often, when a team shoots poorly in a game, it just so happens they are playing an opponent known for being a great defensive team. Strong D gets into your head and adds more pressure. You miss a couple of shots you would usually make, and now your confidence starts to erode. This works even better against a young team.

Brandon sets the tone for the Blazers. Kobe’s excellent defense on him was probably the single biggest reason the team got off to a bad start offensively. Credit where credit is due.

The age-old sports maxim

that “You’re never as good as you look when you win and you’re never as bad as you look when you lose” can definitely be applied here.

True, LA came out with a defensive game plan that had some success but still allowed the Blazers to get a number of open looks. When those shots did not go down, the Blazers got frustrated and started making poorer decisions and the whole thing just kind of snowballed from there.

Trust me, having watched a number of Laker games this preseason I haven’t really seen any signs that they’ve really made the kind of commitment to defense that Phil would like. They did come out fired up on D yesterday, motivated largely (I think) by all of the hype surrounding the Blazers. Heck, there was full page article in the LA Times yesterday that suggested the Blazers were already poised to challenge the Laker’s resurgence in the West. They definitely wanted to teach them young whippersnappers a thing or two and it showed. But I still maintain that LA will hardly be the kind of defensive powerhouse that many now surmise they will be based on Portland’s poor offensive showing last night.

by DonkeyShins on Oct 29, 2008 11:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Sorry about your surroundings

but not crediting the L*kers defense is disingenuous. It’s funny how many of those “makeable” shots we just happened to miss were jumpers…exactly the shots opponents would have us take. Plus no easy buckets, a paucity of points in the paint…we got throttled by a team that knew what they were doing. Now, the L*kers are not going to be able to do that to every team they face. They may not even be able to do it to Portland again. But that doesn’t change the fact that they played us exactly right on the defensive end last night and it worked.

First game jitters...

The Blazers are (going to be) a much better team than they were last night. Phil Jackson said it well, when he suggested that his team couldn’t take credit for most of the Blazers misses last night.

LMA was awful. Our guards did very little to disrupt the L*ker defense. We looked like a skiddish version of last year’s team – taking 90% jumpers. At least we played decent defense.

In my opinion, intensity was the area we need the most improvement after last night’s game.

by Veaux11 on Oct 29, 2008 10:55 AM PDT reply actions

Last night might be the best possible thing that could have happened.

Teams that do well in the NBA have to know how to overcome adversity.

Last night was plenty of adversity. This is not the D-league, fellas, this is the big show. If things come too easy at first, then this group is never going to develop the toughness it needs to go all the way.

Games like last night are an essential part of the development process in transforming a young team with “potential” into a confident team with grit and the ability to win against any opponent.

The first month of the season is for this team to figure out how to win in the big-boy league. Talk to me in March if we’re still struggling, then maybe it might be time to reconsider some things. But for right now, we’re going to take our lumps. And that’s a good thing. Really.

Wherever you go, there you are.

I am disappointed

with Nate, Roy, Aldridge, Outlaw, but not Oden.

Nate didn’t get the team ready to play. He’s using the same very basic offense and can’t make any adjustments in game. Using the high pick and roll 10 times in a row and having it fail 10 times isn’t good coaching. He can do better.

Roy and Aldridge both need to be more aggressive and not settle for dribbling around or taking long jumpers. They were double teamed most of the night, but that’s what happens to good players, they need to play through that.

Outlaw showed us the offensive game that we like from him, but nothing else. No ability to play in the scheme or play defense or expand his game at all.

I’m not disappointed with Oden. He need time to develop and he needs to be free from the weight of our massive expectations. He just needs to be able to play the game.

I think I’m disappointed because I’ve had an impression that he’s better than what we saw. On the other hand, if you were to ask me last year where he’d be at… that’s the Oden I saw there. THAT expectation. That Oden was 13 and 10 in my estimation. That oden would have a hard beginning, break out in the middle, and breakdown at the end in exhaustion.

The coaching staff showed panic with their last minute decision to start

Travis. And don’t for a second beieve the players didn’t sense that. Nor did it help in the outcome. Let this team grow. Start Batum for here on and take your lumps.

Secondly, read my case for starting Pryzbilla over Oden for the time being. Anyone who’s played team sports knows that starting roster consistency is one of most important keys to success. And Oden is anything but consistent in his play or availability. Depending on him so much is going to wreak havoc on this team’s starting lineup. Sorry Oden honks, Greg is a great kid, but he is what he is at the moment. This may also relieve some of the pressure he puts on himself.

With that off of my chest – I’m not worried one bit since it is 1 of 82.

CALM

Calm, because I have been watching the Blazers for over 20 years, and have seen them get blown out many times…(Yes even when they were in their best title run years). I agree that this loss might be the best thing that could have happened to them….(not that I wouldn’t have preferred to watch them blow out the L*kers). As far as Greg’s foot….it was a fluke that had nothing to do with any of his other injuries. Any player that lands on another players foot when coming down from a rebound is going to roll their ankle.

by Enginerd on Oct 29, 2008 11:37 AM PDT reply actions

Magnum has it right

An already very young and inexperienced team adds four new players, two of them main rotation guys. Yeah, they’re not ready, nor will they be for some time. Oden is doing all that can be expected of him at this point.

What should worry us is the same thing we saw last year: unimaginative, plodding offense.

I see two main candidates for what ails Nate’s offensive scheme:

Depends on a playmaker at the point. And we do not have one.

There is not much of an offensive scheme.

Unsolicited advice that will of course never be heard?

The Blazers should consider finding an offensive specialist as an assistant coach. Or trading for an NBA point guard.

Upset

Nate was drastically outcoached. (beginning even before the game)

Our players didn’t bring their “A” game either.

You can't coach people

that aren’t executing. Not saying nate is 100% blameless, but lets not all focus on Nate here. This was more player than nate.

We haven't done anything yet... but don't blink.

HE WASN'T OUTCOACHED

He had a roster filled with older, more experienced players (not necessarily more talented) and a huge home-court advantage.

People are looking into this WAY too deeply and expecting WAY too much. We are still going through a rebuilding stage with the youngest team in the league.

SOME NUMBERS TO PONDER BEFORE YOU GET TOO WORKED UP: 4 – 5 – 11 – 23

  • rookies *5- new guys *11- 3 or less years experience *23- average age

Anyone disagree that Rudy will be the 2nd best player on this team...

by the end of the season? If so, explain your logic - if you dare!

when i get sad, i stop being sad & become awesome again. true story.

Rudy is awesome

But my logic goes like this: Roy/LMA/Oden and then Rudy.

It’s just science.

Where and why?

He didn’t like playing so much? What exactly did he say?

I saw it on hoopshype

clicked on to read the whole article – but it was in Spanish.

Said he was happy they picked up his option but not happy with his role on the team last night (sounded like). Said ‘it seems like I’m in the same situation as last year’ (?)

ok if we dont have the text

or translation then is this even valid. That seems like it was taken way out of context as well.

I don't know the context for sure

but it didn’t sound good. A lot of young players who want to show thier stuff – one ball . . . .

Oh wait

You sure you don’t mean Sergio?

We picked up Sergio’s option, not Rudy’s yet.

Sergio didn’t play much, so I can see why he’d be unhappy.

So yeah… “same as last year” points to Sergio. I’d tell him it’s one game and no one was hitting their shots, and if shooters aren’t hitting Sergio isn’t very useful. He shoulda/coulda played more though.

I found it

It was Sergio.

http://www.sport.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=44&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=557038&idseccio_PK=808

Sergio is a backup and I guess Nate wanted defense and scoring. He shouldn’t complain already, but oh well.

As long as Rudy isn’t sour then I can’t be too concerned.

What Rudy said to the Spanish press

Rudy Fernandez (asked about Sergio’s Role):

- I feel more comfortable playing with Sergio, but this is a matter that I don’t discuss.
- He can’t go down, he must go ahead because he’s a great player.

Pau Gasol (asked about Sergio’s Role):

- I was a little bit surprised (due to the lack of minutes of Sergio compared to the preseason).
- There is not a big chance of getting comfortable in the game when you play 5 min, especially for a playmaker PG. I hope he get a solid role of 2nd PG step by step.

Well this is my quite free translation of what Rudy and Pau said, you get the picture (despite the several grammar mistakes that I probably have committed).

The highlight of the sensationalist sports newspaper “Marca”: “Pau and Rudy outraged by the lack of playing time of Sergio” WTF?????

As a Spaniard, I have a piece of advise to you: DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE SPANISH MEDIA!!!

Uh I think this is a tad bit of a subjective issue. . .

but I think he is the 4th best player…

Rudy is an experienced player

even if this is his first season in the NBA he probably has more experience in the court than most of Blazers players, Rudy is going to be a very important player in this team in final minutes.

by ABSF on Oct 29, 2008 2:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Not too worried

Lakers = Veteran team also defending western conference champs, who a lot of analysts have picked to win the championship. Their time is now.

Blazers = Young, universally talented team who are lacking game time together and sport the youngest average age of any team in the NBA. Also have 4 rookies who expect to get rotation time. Their time will come, but not for a season or two.

As long as oden is ok, im looking forward to seeing the team grow together, the fact that the core players actually enjoy each others company is a big plus, and although theres going to be some frustrating losses, i would rather have it this way than a few seasons back where we won 22 (?) games.

i voted confident

whatever the result of the first game, still cant deny the fact that the blazers have the most talent of any team in the NBA………..

just not sure how long it will take for everyone to get used to playing together
